In 1976 the MoMA (New York) organised a single-artist exhibition of his work, making him the first photographer to have a large-scale colour photograph exhibited in a museum. Along with other great contemporary photographers such as Gary Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, Eggleston was part of a generation of authors whose work in the 1970s broke free of many of the rules and restrictive concepts of the medium, one of the most important of which was that artistic photography could only be artistic if it was in black and white. William Eggleston, Mystery of the Ordinary is one of the most extensive exhibitions to date in Spain on this exceptional Photographer. KBr FLAME ’23 KBr Fundación MAPFRE presents the third edition of the annual appointment with the emerging creation of the new generations of photographers starting their professional careers after their studies in Barcelona. This year the exhibition will feature the projects of Alan Balzac (Galicia, 1999), Ivette Blaya (Santa Margarida de Montbui, Barcelona, 2000), Rocío Madrid (Melilla, 1988) and Lucía Morón (Buenos Aires, 1997), chosen through a selection process with professionals from the sector. He was the most influential artist of the 12th century and is considered so because of his use of primary colors and simple forms that resonate with an artistic universe. His artwork is recognized as modern artistic sensibility due to the size of his canvas, the use of powerful color, and the expressive use of paint. The Fundació Miró was initially created to preserve the artwork of Miró but over the course of time, it was open to the public and now shares a common stage with modern-day contemporary art. The Fundació Miró displays Miró's art and life, creating an enriching dialogue with other artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. Permanent and temporary exhibits are displayed to get the full experience. Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Built in 1640, Montjuic Castle is an old military fortress on top of the Montjuic hill in Barcelona. The Montjuic Castle had played a key role in the history of Barcelona, and became a symbol of Spain when it defeated the Catalan forces in 1714. It served as a stronghold for the kingdoms which ruled the surrounding regions. In particular, the Montjuic castle is infamous in the Catalan history books for its role in the civil war that plagued this region between 1936 and 1939. Later on, it was converted into a military museum. It was officially given the name Military Armor Museum and showcases armory and weapons used throughout Catalan history. The castle must be accessed through a the Montjuic cable car, a gondola lift, with a station near the castle entrance. A gondola lift is propelled by cables from above, as opposed to a traditional cable car. The cable car journey forms a crucial part of the experience. Several of the city’s famous monuments, such as the world-famous Sagrada Familia, the towering Torre Agbar, the Barcelona Cathedral and several other tourist attractions can be seen. The Mediterranean Sea is visible on one side, and the massive Montserrat Mountains on the other. There are three stations where the cable car stops, Parc de Montjuïc, Miramar and finally, at Castell de Montjuïc. The beauty of Barcelona and it's multitude of attractions can be truly appreciated during this relaxing journey. Your Experience The easiest way to get to the Montjuic cable car station is taking the funicular railway at the Paral·lel metro station. Alternatively, you can catch the cable car at the Barcelona Bus Turístic stop. You can enjoy a relaxing journey up to Montjuic Castle, as the cable car glides up the hill. The cable car journey provides a unique experience. You can see the entirety of Barcelona as the cable car moves up the hill. The bustling metropolis, with a backdrop of lush green hilly forests and the ice-capped mountains, makes for a spectacular sight. With brand-new cabins, up to eight people can sit together, and this makes large family trips all the more fun. With large glass panels, you can enjoy dazzling views of the city from any position inside the cabin. A 753 meter journey up the hill awaits you, and your eyes are in for a treat as you ascend. The Montjuic Castle is situated about 170 meters above sea level, right next to the port. Impressive views of the coastline and Barcelona are visible from the top of the ancient fortress. You can see the fortification planted extensively with parterre gardens. The serene environment of the castle has no semblance to the fort that it once was. The Military Armor Museum houses a vast number of exhibits of the various types of armor used by the Catalans. You can see armor equipped mannequins which will help you understand how soldiers of this era would have looked like in the flesh. Once you have completely explored the Montjuic Castle, you can take the cable car back to ground level. All in all, the cable journey to the Montjuic Castle and back is an unforgettable experience and a must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Casa Vicens was built as a summer retreat for the Vicens family. A masterpiece of Antoni Gaudí, the house served as the beginning of a very successful career. Casa Vicens served as a private residence until recently. It was made accessible to the public in November 2017. A comprehensive restoration project was undertaken, to return the building to its original state. By incorporating several architectural styles and materials such as iron, glass, concrete and ceramic tiles, Antoni Gaudí set himself apart from his contemporaries. Geometric masses, abstract brick ornamentation, and exquisite metalwork can be seen throughout the house. The temporary exhibitions show some of the single houses designed by Antoni Gaudí’s contemporaries from across the world, such as America, Europe and exponents of the Art Nouveau style. What makes Casa Vicens unique is that the museum project aims at meticulously restoring Gaudí’s designs to their original state. The goal is to ensure that the whole world can discover the extraordinary world of Gaudí. It focuses on long-term sustainability and integrating the different sections for the enjoyment of its visitors. Your Experience The meeting point is outside the attraction itself. Your Experience The Recinte Modernista De Sant Pau is one of the newest and most beautiful attractions in the city of Barcelona. It was created by the architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hospital de Sant Pau is located inside it and served as a fully-functioning hospital all the way until 2009. The new Sant Pau hospital is located up the hill from the complex, and although far less lavish, it is more functional and state-of-the-art. Many buildings are currently being used for other purposes, such as the Sant Manuel Pavilion, which now holds the Casa Asia, a hub for business and cultural research about all Asian countries. The Art Nouveau architecture is marvelous, and the manicured gardens and grand exhibitions are stunning to see in person. Domènech believed that the flowers, trees and fresh air would help people recover quicker in the hospital, and the confluence of nature and human-made structure is absolutely breathtaking. You can see that the wards were set amidst a garden, with colorful ceramic tiles adorning the brick facades in various shapes. Domènech also believed that colorful mosaics and statues would prompt faster recovery, and you can see the hospital replete with numerous designs and motifs about good health and hope. The Sant Salvador Pavilion is something you shouldn't miss, and the exhibition will brief you about the healthcare history of Barcelona. You will understand the impact of this acclaimed medical institution on modern medicine. The colorful mosaics and tiles have been restored and make for a wonderful sight.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss This An industrial town built in the late 19th century, Colònia Güell served as a home for the people who worked in the nearby mill. Several eminent modernist architects were commissioned to build this town and the strong modernist style influence is visible throughout Colònia Güell. Theatres, schools, gardens and an Athenaeum were erected here during the 19th century. Buildings were constructed primarily using bricks and stone and most of the buildings remain in their pristine condition due to the renovation efforts at Colònia Güell. Ca l’Ordal is a traditional Spanish country house, resembling many such houses that served as homes to locals who worked at the mill. Designed by Francesc Berenguer and Joan Rubió, it represents the popular style of architecture during the 19th century and the brick structure gives a view into the life of people living in this era. Ca L’Espinal is considered one of the finest examples of modernist architecture. One of the highest quality buildings in Colonia Guell, this massive structure is an appealing sight. In the early 20th century, Antoni Gaudí was one of the most sought-after architects in Spain. His innovations and designs were spectacular, and several monuments across the country had been commissioned to him. Eusebi Güell decided to appoint Gaudi to build a church in the town of Colònia Güell. The Güell family, however, withdrew funding, and as a result, the church was unfinished. Presently, it is called Gaudi’s crypt. Gaudi also had a laboratory here, where he came up with innovative architectural marvels. Most of his work for the Sagrada Familia was inspired at this location. The crypt itself is a spectacular sight, although it is not fully complete. The geometric patterns and vibrant colors of the stained glasswork make this one of the greatest unfinished works of art in the world. The monument blends wonderfully into nature and is a testament to the genius of Antoni Gaudí. Recently, an effort by the local architects resulted in a partial completion of the crypt. Presently, people can stand on the roof, which was initially to serve as the floor of the church. Your Experience A train ride will take you from Barcelona to Colònia Güell. The train from Barcelona to Colonia Güell takes around 25 minutes. The meeting point for the train ride is from the station Plaça Espanya. The two way ticket is valid for two zones, an entrance into the famous Gaudi crypt and the audioguide. Once you’ve reached the destination, follow the signs to get to Colonia Güell. From there, walk a couple of minutes, again following the signs, to the Visitors' Center, where you will be given an audioguide and a map in order to start your visit. You are required to deposit some form of identification (ID) as a deposit until the audioguide is returned. Walking through the streets of Colònia Güell will leave you with a sense of tranquility and peace. The surroundings, buildings and serene atmosphere of the place make it an unforgettable experience. From colorful buildings to ancient stone structures, Colònia Güell is filled with eye-catching surprises. The most visited attraction in Colònia Güell is the Gaudi crypt. The massive structure was built using broken decorative mosaic, called "trencadís," and you can see how it merges with the greenery surrounding it. The ornamental touches of Gaudi are very apparent, with multicolored stained glass filtering light into the church. You can observe the trademark catenary arches and walls in the shape of parabolas. Traditional buttresses and some leaning pillars can be found on the exterior of the crypt. The audio guide will provide you with a detailed history of the place. You can explore the beauty of Colònia Güell and relax in its calming atmosphere, away from the bustling city. When you have finished touring the place, you must return the audioguide 10 minutes before the Visitors Centre closes, post which you can return to Barcelona.

What to Expect Your tickets allow you to skip the ticket line and head straight to the entrance gate. The ticket remains valid through the day and you can visit the landmark anytime between 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM when the last entry is granted. Unconventional though Casa Mila's appearance may be, the actual purpose of the structure is as conventional as it can be. After all, the building is, first and foremost, residential in nature. It's hard imagining that the place was designed to be anyone's home, but as you walk through Casa Mila's lavishly adorned lobbies or the sprawling courtyards peppered with Gaudi's signature embellishments, living here seems like a dream come true. Touring the Casa Mila by day involves visiting two different parts of the museum - the Espai Gaudi and the Pedera Apartment. The former includes a broad showcase of Guadi’s work and is divided into sections dedicated to different projects and shows his life in broad strokes. The latter is a fascinating recreation of the home of a bourgeois family in Barcelona from the first third of the 20th century. Perhaps the true treasure of the building is the view from the rooftop that is decorated with distinctive corkscrew style chimneys, synonymous with the building itself. The view of Barcelona's skyline from the top of the structure is nothing short of breathtaking so any time spent here is time well spent. Enhance your trip with the free audio guide included on this tour which will give you information on the main areas of the building, the sites you can visit and the architect himself. Once the 90-minute long commentary that is available in multiple languages on the audio guide runs out, you are more than free to explore on your own.

Your Experience At Espacio Trafalgar you can find an artistic repertoire that recreates works by Banksy that are, or were, in different countries: England, France, the United States and Palestine. This is an opportunity to connect with some of the most relevant and impressive iconography of one of the most influential figures in the world of urban art. Remember, to date the artist has not produced a catalogue raisonné of all his works. This ensures his images are open to interpretation by the public that observes them, proving that urban art has democratic intentions. By making it available in the streets of the whole world, he turns the walls into open-air galleries within everyone's reach. Among the most present themes we find politics, war, and poverty. The hottest social conflicts at all times become protagonists. They are then changing themes: human rights, homophobia, climate change, the relationship of society with new technologies, consumerism, racism, economic crisis, etc. Urban art is used as a tool to denounce and to make visible problems still present in our society. We therefore invite you to enter a place full of possibilities and vindictive art that will approach you to see the world from different perspectives.

Your Experience It was not until 1992 that Barcelona began evolving as one of the tourist destinations in Europe. Flamenco hotspots like Tablao Flamenco Cordobes became famous for their first-rate dancers and musicians who gave electrifying performances. Today, Tablao Cordobes is one of the most popular ways to spend a refreshing evening watching Flamenco with food or drinks in the city of Barcelona. A show that stays true to its historical roots, the Flamenco performance is just as exciting as it was back in the 70’s. Pair the show with either dinner, tapas, or a drink. The gastronomy of Tablao Flamenco Cordobes takes care of every detail and makes a selection of dishes with vegetarian, vegan, halal and gluten-free varieties among others. The decoration of Tablao Flamenco Cordobes Barcelona draws its inspiration from Nasrid forms and architecture of Andalusia and was handcrafted by the official restorers of the Alhambra in Granada. The art of Flamenco does not relate to storytelling but the human form in itself. The fast-paced guitar riffs and exceptional dancing is bound to get you tapping to the beat and cheering for the performers. The show typically features performers from various Flamenco traditions dancing to characteristic Spanish guitar. This is one of the best ways to experience Spanish culture if you have an evening to spend in Barcelona.

Why Visit Gaudi’s Pedrera The last private residence designed by Antoni Gaudi, Casa Mila, is popularly known as La Pedrera (‘open quarry’) by the locals. This is due to the rough-hewn appearance that envelops the outer portion of this modernist building. Planned as a spiritual symbol, the building features multiple carvings and statues of Mary and the archangels. The building is among the most charming masterpieces of Gaudi and during the night a secret side emerges to this building. Twisting corridors that transport you inside a cave; sea waves concealing marine life, chimneys resembling giant warriors and a plethora of forms comes to life in the starlight. This is one Gaudi experience in Barcelona that you just cannot miss. Your Experience You experience begins at the Casa Mila entrance where you will meet your guide. After that, you will head inside the building to explore the dreamy design and architecture that Gaudi's creations are famous for. The tour will take you to various sections of the building such as the Provença and Passeig de Gràcia courtyard, the Roof-Terrace and the Espai Gaudí (the attic). What sets the Origin experience apart though is the stunning audio-visual show that is held on Casa Mila's rooftop. This immersive experience not only highlights the importance of Casa Mila in the architectural timeline of Barcelona but also gives you deep insights into Gaudi's design approach and implementation. Once you have explored the building with your guide and the show has ended, the tour will come to a close with a glass of glass of cava and chocolate snacks as refreshments.

Your Experience After you meet your guide at the designated meeting point, you will receive help to access the park. Once you enter, your guide will show you the highlights of the park. The first architectural element of the park that you will see is the two buildings on either side of the gates. The one on the left served as a concierge, with a waiting room and a telephone booth, and the one on the right was the residence of the doorman, hence its name Casa del Guarda, which today is part of the MUHBA (Museum of Barcelona History). The next highlight of the park will be the staircase that leads one from the entrance to the main area. After the staircase, you will head to the Hypostyle Room, a structure meant to resemble a forest and a space that is supported by 86 Doric columns. The Hypostyle Room supports the Greek Theatre on its roof. From the Greek Theatre, you will be able to soak in panoramic views of Barcelona, and the Sagrada Familia in the distance.
