Portugal is a Schengen State and has some specific visa guidelines. Kindly go through the following note: 

Schengen Territory: The citizens of India can get short stay visa for a period that ranges from one to ninety days, which will be valid for all countries of the Schengen Territory i.e. Austria, Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg), Denmark, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Greece, Iceland, Latvia, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden & Switzerland. The Schengen Convention is an innovative initiative taken for freedom of circulation of people. According to the same, foreigners having a valid stay permit delivered by one of the Schengen states can leave and later re-enter the Schengen Territory without taking visa again, but with a condition that they have a valid passport along with relevant travel document and a multiple entry visa. However, application for visas have to be submitted with the relevant Consular authorities, which are to be determined according to the following criteria

  • If the applicant intends to stay in one country only, the application should be submitted at the Representation of the same country.
  • If the applicant intends to travel to more than a few member States, the application should be submitted at the Representation of the country where the main point of travel lies mentioning the duration of stay.
  • If the main destination cannot be determined, the competent Consular office for processing the application will be one of the countries of the first port of entry into the Schengen Territory.
  • The long term visas are still subject to the Law of the country of destination. They must be applied for at the Consular Authorities of the concerned member of the states.

Note: It is to be noted that all first time travelers to Portugal or any other Schengen State need to come personally for interview.


Tourist Visa

Note: Applicants are advised to make sure that Air Ticket, Invitation, Insurance and Covering Letter must have matching dates.

  • One visa application form to be filled in completely and signed by the applicant.
  • All applicants are requested to visit http://www.secomunidades.pt/vistos/index.php/formularios to fill and submit their visa applications online before presenting a signed copy of the same.
  • Two latest passport size colored photographs (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm) with white background, with close up of applicant’s head and top of his / her shoulders so that the face takes up 70 -80% of the photograph. All the photographs should be taken with a digital camera, must be high quality colour and printed on photo-quality paper. Photograph should not be older than 6 months old. Photographs should be pasted in the specified space, not stapled.
  • Original Passport with validity for at least three months beyond the intended stay along with photocopies of the relevant pages (front, back and visas, if any). The passport should have two blank pages opposite to each other. Passports with validity more than 10 years won’t be accepted as the main required travel document.
  • Application form should be enclosed with confirmed onward/ return air ticket.

Applicants should have Health Insurance valid for all Schengen countries, which will cover various risks for example, accident, medical emergency, illness, evacuation and repatriation. The minimum coverage must be € 30.000,00 (thirty thousand Euros) or its equivalent. The list of approved Indian Travel Insurance Companies providing Travel Medical Insurance for Schengen Visa is as follows:



  • Apollo Munich for the age group of 6 months to 70 years.
  • Bajaj Allianz for the age group of 6 months to 70 years.
  • HDFC Ergo for the age group of 3 months to 70 years.
  • ICICI Lombard for the age group of 3 months to 51 years.
  • IFFCO Tokio for the age group of 3 months to 70 years.
  • Future Generali for the age group of 6 months to 55 years.
  • NATIONAL for the age group of 6 months to 60 years.
  • Reliance for the age group of 3 months to 70 years.
  • Tata/AIG for the age group of 6 months to 55 years.
  • Oriental Insurance Company for the age group of 6 months to 60 years.
Other Requirements:

  • Documentary proof of accommodation (confirmation of reservation of hotel / apartment) should be attached with the application form.
  • Minors below 18 years travelling alone need to submit the written consent of their parents or legal guardian (who is not travelling).
  • Foreign nationals living in India must submit valid permit to return to India.
  • Applicants need to submit documentary proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses while in Portugal along with the visa form. They can be: (a) Bank statements for the past 3 months, (b) Income Tax Returns statements for the last 3 years, (c)Copy of Applicant's PAN Card, (d) Salary Slips (if employed).
  • If required, the Sponsorship Letter from host ("Termo de Responsabilidade") undertaking responsibilities for the boarding, lodging and repatriation will be submitted.
  • Documentary proof of occupation
  • Visa Application form should be enclosed with Covering letter mentioning the purpose of the visit with complete travel plan.
  • Children below 6 years of age are exempted to pay the visa fee on the date of submission.
No application will be accepted if it does not meet the timelines as given below:-

  • 5 working days in advance for applicants that have already traveled to Schengen in the past (no matter when) or that have a valid USA and / or UK visa.
  • 10 working days for applicants those have never traveled to Schengen / USA / UK.

The timelines starts only when the application reaches the Embassy not when it's received by VFS.
Visa Fee should be paid in Cash at VFS Centre. An additional charge of Rs. 62 /- will charged at VFS for making the draft. Drafts will no longer be accepted.
Service charge for VFS is Rs. 1320/- (inclusive of service tax & education cess) payable in cash.

The Visa fee is non-refundable.

Business Visa

  • A Covering letter with designation and current profile of the applicant, purpose of the visit, detailed travel itinerary, name and contacts of the company in Portugal, should be attached with the application.
  • Formal letter of invitation and other correspondences mentioning prior dealings, if any, with the Portuguese counterpart.
  • Copy of Educational / Technical Certificates.
  • Children below 6 years of age need not to pay the visa fee on the date of submission.

Other Requirements

  • PCC issued by Regional Passport Office will only be accepted. It should be noted that PCC issued from local police station or any other body WILL NOT be accepted.
  • Documentary proof of accommodation in the country.
  • Application form should be attached with documentary proof of sufficient funds to cover expenses during the stay in Portugal. They can in the form of self supporting means or documentary proof of a scholarship / grant sponsored by the Portuguese Authorities, European Union or a Company.
  • Minors below 18 years traveling alone need to submit the written consent of parents or legal guardian not traveling with them.
  • Documentary proof of acceptance in the language course / research work / training program in a recognized School / College / Institute / University / Company in the country.
  • A "No Objection Certificate" from the existing Institute / School.
  • Documentary proof of all Educational / Professional qualifications.
  • Confirmed Air Ticket reservations.
  • Declaration granting SEF (Foreign and Borders Office) permission for consulting criminal record in Portugal (not required for minors below 16 years). Forms are available at VAC.
  • First time travelers to Portugal need to schedule an appointment for a personal interview at the Consulate.
  • All applications are referred to Portugal for approval and can take from 2 to 3 weeks time.

  • Documentary proof of professional / educational / technical qualifications of the applicant.
Application should be enclosed with declaration granting SEF (Foreign and Borders Office) permission for consulting criminal record in Portugal. The forms are available at VAC.
First time travelers to Portugal need to schedule an appointment for a personal interview at the Consulate. A prior booking of the appointment for personal interview is required.
All applications are referred to Portugal for approval and can take from 2 to 3 weeks time.

* All requisite documents should be attested by Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi / Dhaka / Kathmandu / Colombo (For Indian nationals the document can be attested with “APOSTILLE” sticker by the Ministry of External Affairs, Consular Division, Patiala House).

Visa Fee should be paid in Cash at VFS Centre. An additional charge of Rs. 62 /- will charged at VFS for making the draft. Drafts will no longer be accepted.

Service charge for VFS is Rs. 1320/- (inclusive of service tax & education cess) payable in cash.
The Visa fee is non-refundable.
