Dubai Airport is All Set to Replace Security Check with Face-Scanning Aquariums

The security line at an airport which is commonly considered as one of the most boring places on earth, just got bit less hectic. As Dubai International Airport is doing away with all the security counters next year and coming up with a unique experience where a virtual fish will be used to verify your identity instead. Confused? But, you read us right.

Instead of waiting in line for security e-gates, hopefully by next year passengers in Dubai will be able to walk through a virtual aquarium tunnel in which 80 in-built cameras will scan their faces to pass through. The tunnel will display various images, different landscapes and catchy advertisement that will attract the travelers’ eye.

Fish Tunnel

"The fish is a sort of entertainment and something new for the traveller but, at the end of the day, it attracts the vision of the travellers to different corners in the tunnel for the cameras to capture his/her face print," foreign affairs chief Major Gen Obaid Al Hameeri. The tunnel is projected to take around 15 seconds to walk through, which will eventually cut time and human energy at airports.

Busiest Hub

The plan will especially be useful at Dubai International Airport, which has retained its position as the world's busiest hub for international passengers in 2016, handling around 83.6 million travelers daily. Only if the biometric scan matches the data, then only the passenger will be allowed to board the plane.

Display Report

Once a visitor reaches the end of the tunnel, he/she will either be cleared with a message “Have a nice trip,” or a red sign that will be displayed to alert the security system. 'We have been working for about four years to transform the procedure from the traditional counter and in the future we will not need the counter at all,' Major Gen Obaid Al Hameeri added.

project partnership

The project is being initiated in a partnership with the Emirates Airline and Dubai Airport plans to install the first of these virtual pathways by the end of summer 2018 at Terminal 3. To pass through the tunnel, one has to pre-register with 3D face-scanning kiosks, set up at locations around the airport to do so.
