Tatkal Ticket Booking Guide: Timing, Payment and Official Rules

Prathvi Raj October 17, 2026

Tatkal tickets open one day before your journey date (the journey day itself is excluded). Booking for AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, 3E, CC) opens at 10:00 AM, and booking for Sleeper (SL) and Second Sitting (2S) opens at 11:00 AM. To book train ticket online, your IRCTC account needs Aadhaar authentication, and you must verify an OTP sent to your mobile number. One PNR can carry a maximum of 4 passengers.

If you are planning a last-minute trip on a busy route such as Delhi to Patna, Mumbai to Gorakhpur or Kolkata to Varanasi, read the full guide below. A little preparation the day before makes a real difference to your chances of getting a seat.

What Is the Tatkal Scheme?

Tatkal is a quota that Indian Railways keeps for passengers who need to travel on short notice. A set number of seats on each train is held back for it, and the ticket costs more than a regular one because a Tatkal charge is added to the base fare.

The scheme started in 1997. Its rules around timing, ID and verification have changed several times since, so older blog posts and forum answers are often out of date.

Tatkal Booking Timings by Class

How Early

AC classes (1A, 2A, 3A, 3E, CC)

10:00 AM

1 day before journey

Sleeper (SL) and Second Sitting (2S)

11:00 AM

Example: If your train leaves on the 20th, Tatkal booking opens on the 19th at the time shown for your class.

Good to know: The booking day is counted from the date the train departs from your boarding station. If you board at an intermediate station, search with that station as your starting point.

The 30-Minute Agent Restriction

Authorised ticketing agents cannot book Tatkal tickets during the first 30 minutes of the window. That means 10:00 to 10:30 AM for AC classes and 11:00 to 11:30 AM for non-AC classes. The rule was brought in to give individual passengers a fairer chance at the start.

Official Tatkal Rules You Should Know

1. Aadhaar Authentication

Since 1 July 2025, online Tatkal booking on the IRCTC website and app requires an Aadhaar-authenticated account. If your Aadhaar is not linked, you can be blocked at the worst possible moment, so sort it out well before the booking day.

How to link Aadhaar: Log in to IRCTC, open My Account, choose Link Your Aadhaar, enter your details and verify with the OTP.

2. OTP Verification

Since 15 July 2025, Tatkal bookings need OTP verification on the mobile number you provide. This applies online, at PRS counters and through authorised agents. Use a number that is active and has good network coverage on booking day.

Passengers who do not use Aadhaar can still book Tatkal through a PRS counter or an authorised agent with mobile OTP verification.

3. Passenger Limit

One PNR allows a maximum of 4 passengers on a Tatkal ticket. For a larger group you need separate bookings, and there is no guarantee those seats will be together.

4. ID Proof

Carry a valid original photo ID while travelling. Railway-approved IDs include Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence and PAN card, and some digital options such as DigiLocker are accepted too. If you are unsure, follow the latest IRCTC notice.

5. Tatkal Charges

The Tatkal charge is a percentage of the base fare, with a minimum and maximum for each class:

Class

Tatkal Charge

Minimum (In INR)

Maximum (In INR)

Second Sitting (2S)

10% of base fare

Sleeper (SL)

AC 2 Tier / 1A

500

Taxes such as GST may apply on top. Some trains also run Premium Tatkal, where the fare rises with demand. The final amount is always shown before you pay, so read it carefully.

6. Cancellation and Refund

A confirmed Tatkal ticket is generally not refundable if you cancel it. If the railways cancels the train or changes its route, separate refund rules apply. A waitlisted Tatkal ticket can be cancelled with a deduction. Book Tatkal only when your plan is fixed.

Step-by-Step: How to Book a Tatkal Ticket on IRCTC

Preparation (the day before):

  1. Log in to IRCTC and confirm your password works and your Aadhaar is linked.
  2. Fill your Master List with each passenger's name, age, gender and berth preference.
  3. Decide your payment method (UPI, net banking or card) and check your bank limits.
  4. Make sure your phone has network and your device clock is correct so the OTP arrives on time.

On booking day:

  1. Log in 10 to 15 minutes early.
  2. Enter your source, destination and journey date, and select the Tatkal quota.
  3. Search trains and find your class.
  4. The moment booking opens, click the class and press Book Now.
  5. Pick passengers from the Master List and confirm your mobile number.
  6. Enter the captcha, verify the OTP and complete the payment.
  7. Note your PNR and ticket status once payment goes through.

Payment Tips for Faster, Safer Tatkal Booking

Payments tips

Most of the delay in a Tatkal booking happens at the payment step. A few habits help:

  • UPI is usually the quickest. Check that your app is updated and your daily limit is not used up.
  • Net banking works well if your login and any OTP or approval steps are ready beforehand.
  • Keep a backup payment method in case your first choice fails.
  • Do not press back or refresh on the payment page, as this can fail the transaction.
  • If money is deducted but no ticket is booked, the amount is normally returned automatically within a few working days. Keep a screenshot of the transaction ID anyway.
  • Pay only on the official IRCTC website or app, and stay away from unknown links and unofficial sellers.

How to Check PNR Status

After booking you receive a 10-digit PNR. You can check PNR status on the IRCTC website, the IRCTC Rail Connect app, the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) or the railway's official enquiry services.

What the status means:

  • CNF: Confirmed. Your coach and berth number are assigned.
  • RAC: Reservation Against Cancellation. You get a seat to sit on and may be upgraded to a berth if someone cancels.
  • WL (Waitlist): Not confirmed yet. Types include GNWL, RLWL and PQWL, and Tatkal waitlist appears as TQWL.

The chart is generally prepared around 4 hours before departure, so check your PNR status again after that. If your ticket stays on the waitlist, the refund is processed by the system.

Route Guide: Popular Tatkal Routes

Festivals, wedding season and school holidays fill up trains heading towards Uttar Pradesh and Bihar quickly. On these routes the competition at 10:00 and 11:00 AM is stiff.

Delhi to Patna Trains

This is one of the busiest corridors in the country, with trains running through the day and night. Delhi has several stations, including New Delhi, Old Delhi and Anand Vihar Terminal, so do not stop at the first search result. If one station shows no seats, try another. For AC classes the window opens at 10:00 AM, so be ready then if you want 3A or 2A.

Mumbai to Gorakhpur Trains

This is a long journey, so fares and demand are both high. Mumbai trains leave from different terminals such as Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Bandra Terminus. Searching by city name instead of a single station code shows all options together. On a long route, remember the Tatkal charge is capped by the class limits shown above.

Kolkata to Varanasi trains

Trains run from both Howrah and Sealdah. Compare both stations before deciding, and make sure the quota is set to Tatkal when you search, because other quotas can show different availability.

Ahmedabad to Muzaffarpur trains

Direct options on this route can be limited, which makes a confirmed Tatkal seat harder to find. If no direct train has seats, some travellers look at a ticket to a larger junction such as Patna, Varanasi or Gorakhpur and continue from there. Try this only if the gap between connections is comfortable.

Delhi to Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Ayodhya

All three destinations see heavy demand, especially close to travel dates. For Ayodhya, search for Ayodhya Dham Junction. If one destination is full, compare nearby cities, and remember that moving your journey date by a single day can change availability a lot.

Tips to Improve Your Chances of a Confirmed Seat

  • Log in before the window opens and stay on one tab.
  • Save the Master List and payment details in advance.
  • Shortlist three or four trains instead of relying on one.
  • Check nearby boarding and destination stations.
  • Be flexible on class if comfort and budget allow, for example 3A instead of 2A.
  • Avoid third-party tools that promise instant booking. Misuse can get your account blocked.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Logging in on booking day without Aadhaar linked.
  • Not preparing the Master List in advance.
  • Using an old mobile number that cannot receive the OTP.
  • Refreshing the payment page.
  • Choosing the wrong date or boarding station.
  • Assuming Tatkal opens on the journey day. It opens one day earlier.
