Is 2 Days Enough for Udaipur?
Yes, two days are enough for a first trip. You can see the City Palace properly, take a boat ride, visit the main gardens, walk around Fateh Sagar and catch one sunset without hurrying. If you follow this Udaipur itinerary for 2 days, you will not miss anything major.
One day feels tight because the City Palace and a boat ride alone take half of it. Three days work better if you want a slow pace or a day trip to Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur. For one day, see our 1 day Udaipur itinerary. With an extra day, use the 3 days Udaipur itinerary.
Day 1: City Palace, Lake Pichola and Old City
Everything on Day 1 is in the Old City, within walking distance. The sights that sit closest together are all here, so you will not need a vehicle today.
Jagdish Temple
Reach by 8 AM, before the crowds. The temple is a short walk from the City Palace gate. It was completed in 1651 and is dedicated to Vishnu. Climb the steep front steps, see the black stone idol and look at the carved outer walls. You need about 30 minutes. Cover your shoulders and knees, and leave your shoes at the entrance. There is no entry ticket.
City Palace
The City Palace Museum is the biggest sight in Udaipur. Maharana Udai Singh II laid the foundation stone in 1559. Allow about two hours. It is open 9 AM to 9 PM, and ticket sales close at 8 PM.
The museum ticket is ?400 for adults, whether Indian or foreign. Children aged 5 to 18 and students with ID pay ?150, while senior citizens over 60 pay ?250. Buy at the Badi Pol or Shitla Mata gate, or book on the museum’s website. The museum says early morning is the quietest time, so go at 9 AM. Flash photography is not allowed, and food and drink are only for the open courtyards.
The Crystal Gallery is a separate ticket (?500, 9 AM to 6:30 PM, no photography). Skip it if time is short.
Lake Pichola Boat Ride
The boat leaves from the jetty at Rameshwar Ghat, close to the City Palace. The ride is run by HRH Hotels and includes the Jag Mandir Island Palace. In winter the regular ride runs from 10 AM to 2 PM, and the sunset slot runs until 5 PM. In summer, the regular ride runs until 3 PM and the sunset slot until 6 PM.
The adult rates are ?600 for the regular ride and ?800 for the sunset slot, while the children's rates are ?300 and ?450. Confirm the current price at the counter. Pick the sunset slot for softer light, and reach early on weekends.
Gangaur Ghat and Bagore Ki Haveli
Walk to Gangaur Ghat after the ride. It is a calm spot to watch the lake in the evening. Bagore Ki Haveli sits beside it. This 18th-century mansion has 138 rooms and is run by the West Zone Cultural Centre as a museum. The museum is open 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and the ticket is ?60 for Indian adults and ?40 for children.
In the evening there is a folk dance and puppet show called Dharohar. It runs from 7 PM to 8 PM, and the Indian adult ticket is approx. ?90 to ?150. It has a separate ticket and runs separately from the museum, so confirm the current time, price and venue at the counter. Reach early, since seats fill up.
Where to Have Dinner on Day 1
Most lake-view restaurants are rooftops around Lal Ghat and Gangaur Ghat. Book a table a day ahead, especially on weekends and in winter, because the window seats go first. For a cheaper meal, the thali places in the lanes behind Jagdish Temple serve a full plate at a much lower price.
Day 2: Lakes, Gardens and Sunset Points
Day 2 moves to the western side of the city, so you need an auto or cab. This second part of the 2 days itinerary in Udaipur is lighter. Start at 9 AM and keep Sajjangarh for the end.
Saheliyon Ki Bari
Start here in the morning, before it gets crowded. This garden was made in the 18th century for the women of the royal household. It has fountains, lotus pools, marble kiosks and carved elephants. Plan about 45 minutes. It is open 9 AM to 7 PM, and the entry fee is small (?10 for Indian adults).
Gulab Bagh and Vintage Car Museum
Gulab Bagh is the largest garden in the city, and a short walk is enough. The Vintage Car Museum is next to the Garden Hotel, in the old Mewar State Motor Garage. It shows cars that belonged to the Maharanas, restored to working order. It is open 9 AM to 5 PM, and tickets are ?330 for adults and ?200 for children. If cars do not interest you, skip it and save the time for Fateh Sagar.
Fateh Sagar Lake
Come after lunch. Fateh Sagar is a wide lake with hills around it and a walkway along the bank. You can take a boat to Nehru Island, or just walk and have tea from the stalls on the promenade. Plan about an hour. It is quieter than Lake Pichola, and a good place to slow down after the morning.
Moti Magri (Maharana Pratap Memorial)
Moti Magri is a small hill beside Fateh Sagar. It has a bronze statue of Maharana Pratap on his horse Chetak, a garden and a small museum. Plan 45 minutes. The climb is short, but wear comfortable shoes. It is open 9 AM to 6 PM, and the entry fee is approx ?100 for adults and ?50 for children. The Light and Sound show is extra (approx ?100).
Sajjangarh (Monsoon Palace) for Sunset
Sajjangarh stands on a hill about 5 to 6 km from the city. Maharana Sajjan Singh built it in the late 19th century to enjoy the monsoon season. The palace is mostly empty, and the view over the lakes and the city is the reason to go.
It is open 9 AM to 6 PM, with last entry around 5:30 PM. The entry ticket is ?120 for Indian adults, and a vehicle charge applies if you take your own vehicle up (approx ?55 for a two-wheeler and ?340 for a car), so check the exact charges when you arrive. Reach at least an hour before sunset. In winter, that means by about 4:30 PM. Carry a light jacket, as it is windy at the top.
Evening on Day 2
For a calm end, walk along the Fateh Sagar promenade, or shop at Hathi Pol Bazaar for block prints, puppets and spices, and have dinner nearby.
If you want to see Shilpgram, a craft village west of the city, it is open 11 AM to 7 PM. That means it does not fit after Sajjangarh in winter. Go in the afternoon instead of Moti Magri.
Route and Travel Time for 2 Days
Day 1 is walkable. Jagdish Temple, the City Palace, the boat jetty, Gangaur Ghat and Bagore Ki Haveli are all within about a kilometre of each other.
Day 2 needs a vehicle. Saheliyon Ki Bari to Gulab Bagh is about 3 km, Gulab Bagh to Fateh Sagar about 3 km, and Fateh Sagar to Sajjangarh about 6 km. This Udaipur 2-day plan works best with one auto or cab for the whole of Day 2, instead of several short rides. Agree on the fare before you sit, or use a cab app. A scooter is another option if you hold a valid licence.
Where to Stay for a 2-Day Trip
Where to stay in Udaipur depends on how much you want to walk.
Lake Pichola and Old City: Best for first-time visitors. Day 1 places are a walk away, and the lake views are close. Rooms cost more, and some lanes are too narrow for cars.
Fateh Sagar side: Quieter, and close to the Day 2 sights. It is a bit far from the Old City at night, so you will depend on autos and cabs.
Railway station and Hiran Magri: The cheapest area. The station is close, but you will need a vehicle for every sight.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur for 2 Days
October to March is the best time. Days are pleasant and every outdoor stop is comfortable.
From April to June it is very hot. Start at 8 AM, rest from 12 PM to 4 PM, and keep the boat ride and Sajjangarh for the late afternoon. Boat timings also shift in summer, so check the slot. From July to September the lakes are full and the hills are green, but rain can stop boat rides and spoil the views at Sajjangarh. If it rains on Day 2, swap the days and keep the museum visits for the wet one.
How to Reach Udaipur
By air: Maharana Pratap Airport (Dabok) is about 20 km from the city centre. A cab takes 40 to 45 minutes.
By train: Udaipur City station is the main stop and is close to the Old City. Direct trains run from Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
By road: Jodhpur is about 250 km away, Ahmedabad about 260 km and Jaipur about 400 km. Buses and cabs run on all three routes.
Tips for Your 2 Days in Udaipur
These Udaipur 2 days tips will save you time and money:
- Reach the City Palace at 9 AM, when it opens and is least crowded.
- Take the sunset boat slot for the softest light, and arrive early on weekends.
- Check the Dharohar show time and ticket price before planning your evening.
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples.
- Certified City Palace guides wear an orange lanyard, and their charges are printed on the ID card.
- If you drive, City Palace parking is INR 350 for cars and INR 25 for two-wheelers. A cloakroom is available near the Badi Pol counter.
- Book rooftop restaurants early on weekends and holidays.
- Agree on the auto fare before you sit, or use a cab app.
Common mistakes: trying to fit Kumbhalgarh into two days, assuming Sajjangarh and Shilpgram fit in the same evening, and arriving at Sajjangarh too late for sunset.
Udaipur Plan for Couples, Families and Seniors
- Couples: Book a lake-view dinner on Day 1, and keep the Fateh Sagar walk for Day 2 evening.
- Family with kids: Keep the City Palace visit short and spend more time at Gulab Bagh. Start Day 2 after 9:30 AM so children can rest.
- Senior citizens: The City Palace Museum has a lift, ramps and free wheelchairs (ask at the Information Desk, Moti Chowk), and electric cars carry visitors from the gate for a small fee. Hire a cab for all of Day 2, and skip Sajjangarh if the hill road is tiring.
- Late arrival: If you land after lunch, do the boat ride and the show on Day 1 evening. Move the City Palace to Day 2 morning and drop Moti Magri.
- Early departure: Finish Saheliyon Ki Bari and Gulab Bagh in the morning, and skip Sajjangarh.
FAQs
Q.1. How many hours do you need for the City Palace?
Ans. Plan about two hours for the museum. The museum itself suggests at least an hour. Add 30 to 45 minutes if you also visit the Crystal Gallery. Go at 9 AM when it opens, because it is quietest then.
Q.2. Do I need to book City Palace and boat ride tickets in advance?
Ans. City Palace tickets can be booked on the museum’s website or bought at the Badi Pol and Shitla Mata gates. Boat tickets are handled by HRH Hotels at the jetty. On weekends and in winter, go early, since sunset slots fill up first.
Q.3. Can I visit Kumbhalgarh or Ranakpur in a 2-day Udaipur trip?
Ans. Not comfortably. Each is a full-day trip of about two hours each way, and it would take away one of your two days.
Q.4. Is it easy to get around Udaipur without a car?
Ans. Yes. Day 1 is walkable in the Old City. On Day 2, take an auto, a cab app or a rented scooter, since the sights are spread out. Sajjangarh needs a vehicle to reach the gate.
Q.5. Where can I see the best sunset in Udaipur?
Ans. Sajjangarh gives the widest view of the lakes and the city. For something easier, take the sunset boat ride on Lake Pichola or sit on the Fateh Sagar promenade. Check the gate timing before going up Sajjangarh.
Q.6. How much does a 2-day trip to Udaipur cost?
Ans. A budget trip costs about ?3,500 to ?5,500 per person, and a mid-range trip about ?6,300 to ?9,800 for one night’s stay, not counting travel to Udaipur. Rates go up in December and in wedding season.
Q.7. What are the best things to buy in Udaipur as souvenirs?
Ans. Miniature paintings, bandhani dupattas, lac bangles, silver jewellery and leather juttis are popular. Try Hathi Pol Bazaar, Bada Bazaar or Shilpgram. Bargain politely, and ask how an item is made before you pay.
Conclusion
Two days in Udaipur let you see the palace, the lakes and a good sunset without rushing. Spend Day 1 in the Old City and Day 2 in the gardens, Fateh Sagar and Sajjangarh. This 2 days itinerary in Udaipur works for most first-time visitors, so pick your dates and book your stay.
