Air India Express Flight Information

Air India Express is a leading low-cost airline and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air India, headquartered in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. Operating over 3,600 weekly flights, the airline connects 54 destinations, including 37 domestic and 17 international routes across India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Its primary operating bases are located in Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kannur, Kochi, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Mangaluru, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Tiruchirappalli.

Launched on April 29, 2005, Air India Express was established to provide affordable, convenient connectivity for short-haul international routes, primarily catering to the Indian expatriate community in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The airline complements Air India by focusing on non-trunk routes, serving price-sensitive and leisure travelers with budget-friendly fares, comfortable seating, and complimentary onboard snacks and tea/coffee. As of March 2025, its fleet consists of 100 aircraft, including Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737 MAX 8, Airbus A320ceo, Airbus A320neo, and newly inducted Airbus A321neo aircraft, with plans to grow to 170 aircraft within five years. The fleet expansion includes 35 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, many of which were originally built for other airlines, and A320/A321 aircraft inherited from Air India and AIX Connect (formerly AirAsia India).

Following its acquisition by the Tata Group in January 2022, Air India Express completed a merger with AIX Connect on October 1, 2024, enhancing its network and operational capabilities. The airline’s new livery, introduced in October 2023, features a vibrant orange underbelly and engine casings, with a grey, orange, and cyan tail. Each aircraft showcases unique ‘Tales of India’ tail art, reflecting India’s diverse artistic heritage through designs like Chittara, Ajrakh, Bandhani, Ikat, and Warli. The 100th aircraft, a Boeing 737-8 registered as VT-BWI, features Karnataka’s Chittara art and was flagged off on March 10, 2025, at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, the airline’s largest hub with over 445 weekly flights.

Air India Express is committed to on-time performance, service excellence, and innovative offerings, such as Xpress Biz with extra legroom, priority services, and Gourmair hot meals. With a focus on tier 2 and tier 3 cities, the airline plays a pivotal role in India’s aviation growth, offering enhanced baggage allowances (e.g., 30 kg check-in + 7 kg cabin for international flights) and expanding routes, including new destinations like Hindon, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Jammu, Patna, Port Blair, Bangkok, and Phuket.

Air India Express Baggage Policy

The baggage policy of Air India Express is designed to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience while maintaining safety and efficiency. Below is a comprehensive overview of the airline’s baggage allowances, restrictions, special equipment handling, and international connection baggage rules.

Carry-On Baggage

1.a) Allowance: Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted one piece of carry-on baggage weighing up to 7 kg (15 lb). The dimensions must not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm (22 x 14 x 10 in), including handles and wheels, to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat.

1.b) Additional Items: In addition to the 7 kg carry-on, passengers may carry one personal item such as a laptop bag, purse, small backpack, briefcase, or camera case. Valuable items like personal documents, medications, mobile phones, and laptops should be kept in carry-on baggage.

1.c) Xtra Carry-On Option: For passengers needing additional carry-on baggage, the Xtra Carry-On service allows extra baggage to be brought onboard without splitting it into multiple pieces, reducing wait times at the luggage pick-up belt. This must be pre-booked in advance.

Restrictions:

  • Carry-on baggage exceeding the size or weight limits must be checked in as registered baggage, subject to excess baggage fees if applicable.
  • Prohibited items include sharp objects, firearms (allowed with fees and restrictions), and lithium battery-powered self-balancing devices.
  • Power banks and lithium-ion batteries (up to 160 Wh) are permitted only in carry-on baggage.
  • Specific restrictions apply at certain airports, such as Dubai Terminals 1 and 2, where police may remove prohibited items without passenger presence, leaving a notification note in the baggage.

Tips: Use a luggage scale to ensure compliance with weight limits. Place valuables in carry-on baggage to avoid loss or damage.

Checked Baggage

1. Allowance:

  • General: Free baggage allowance varies by destination and fare type. For example, international flights to/from the Gulf may allow 20/30/40 kg, while domestic flights typically allow 15 kg. Check specific allowances on the Air India Express website or at booking.
  • Infants: Entitled to 10 kg of checked baggage (including 7 kg hand baggage), plus one collapsible stroller, carrycot, or infant car seat free of charge.
  • Dimensions: The sum of length, breadth, and height for each piece must not exceed 158 cm (62 in). Maximum weight per piece is 32 kg (70 lb).

2. Excess Baggage:

  • Baggage exceeding the free allowance incurs charges, subject to space availability. Pre-booking excess baggage is recommended to save costs.
  • Excess baggage fees apply per kilogram and vary by route (domestic or international).

3. International Connections Baggage:

  •  For passengers with connecting flights (e.g., domestic to international or vice versa), the International Connections Baggage service allows pre-booking of excess baggage for seamless transfers. Specific fares and limits apply, which can be checked on the Air India Express website.
  • Baggage allowances may differ for connecting flights on separate tickets or with other airlines. Passengers must verify each carrier’s policy.

Tips: Pre-book excess baggage to avoid higher airport fees. Verify allowances for connecting flights to ensure compliance.

Special Equipment

1. Assistive Devices: Mobility aids and assistive devices (e.g., wheelchairs, crutches) are carried free of charge, subject to DGCA guidelines and aircraft limitations. Advance notification is required for proper handling.

2. Medical Devices:
  • Portable oxygen cylinders, automated external defibrillators (AED), portable oxygen concentrators (POC), and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines are permitted as carry-on baggage, provided they meet FAA/EASA safety standards and are approved by the airline.
  • Devices must be properly sealed and certified for air travel. Passengers must inform the airline at booking.
3. Fragile/Special Items:
  • The Special Equipment Handling Service ensures delicate items (e.g., musical instruments, sports equipment) are transported without damage. Pre-booking is required, and items must comply with size and weight restrictions.
  • Drones (up to 2 kg/4 lb) are allowed as carry-on or checked baggage, with batteries (up to 160 Wh) carried in carry-on only. Larger drones (100–160 Wh) are limited to two spare batteries; those over 160 Wh must be shipped as cargo.

Tips: Contact Air India Express customer service at least 48 hours before travel to arrange for special equipment or assistive devices.

Damaged or Lost Baggage

  • Reporting: Report damaged or lost baggage immediately at the airport’s baggage claim area. File a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with flight details, baggage tags, and photos of damage.
  • Tracking: Use the WorldTracer system to track lost baggage. Air India Express supports Apple AirTag for locating delayed or lost baggage.
  • Liability: The airline is not liable for valuables in checked baggage. Passengers are advised to carry important items in cabin baggage.

Air India Express Check-In Options

  • Online Check-In:
  1. Available 48 hours to 60 minutes before departure. Passengers must present boarding pass/confirmation slip and ID at the airport for verification and baggage tagging. Click here for complete information on Air India Express web check in.
  2. Self-check-in kiosks and self-baggage drops available at select airports (e.g., Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport).
  • Airport Check-In: Counters close 60 minutes before departure. Present ITR or e-ticket.
  • Baggage Drop : For online check-in passengers, use designated baggage drop counters. Provide e-ticket and ID; staff will weigh and tag baggage.

Air India Express Boarding Pass Policy

The Air India Express boarding pass policy is designed to streamline the check-in process and ensure a seamless travel experience for passengers.

Obtaining a Boarding Pass

  • Issuance:
  1. Domestic Flights: Passengers receive a digital boarding pass upon completing online check-in, which can be saved as a mobile boarding pass on a smartphone or downloaded as a printable PDF. The boarding pass must be presented at airport checkpoints, either digitally or printed.
  2. International Flights: Passengers receive a confirmation slip instead of a traditional boarding pass after online check-in. This slip, along with valid identification (e.g., passport), must be presented at the airport check-in counter for verification and issuance of the final boarding pass.
  • Format: The boarding pass includes essential details such as the passenger’s name, flight number, seat assignment, departure time, and boarding gate. For codeshare flights, an e-ticket is issued instead of an Itinerary Receipt (ITR), and passengers must follow the operating airline’s boarding pass policy.

Check-In Options for Boarding Pass

Online Check-In:

  • Available 48 hours to 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights and up to 2 hours for international flights via the Air India Express website (www.airindiaexpress.com) or mobile app.
  • Process:
    1. Visit the “Check-in” section on the website or app.
    2. Enter the Booking Reference (PNR) and last name to retrieve booking details.
    3. Select a seat from the available seat map (subject to availability; extra legroom or exit row seats may incur additional charges).
    4. Complete the check-in process and download the digital boarding pass or confirmation slip. An e-boarding pass is also sent to the registered email address.
  • Benefits: Allows passengers to bypass long check-in queues, pre-select seats, and manage baggage options (e.g., pre-book excess baggage or meals). Passengers with only carry-on baggage can proceed directly to security for domestic flights after online check-in.
  • Limitations: Not available for codeshare flights, passengers requiring special assistance (e.g., unaccompanied minors, those with special needs), or flights with specific restrictions. These passengers must check in at the airport counter for document verification.

Self-Check-In Kiosks:
  • Available at select airports, such as Terminal T3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi for Australia-bound flights. Domestic passengers across India can use kiosks for self-check-in and to obtain a boarding pass.
  • Process: Enter booking details (PNR and last name), select a seat, and print the boarding pass. Passengers with checked baggage can use self-baggage drop facilities where available or proceed to the check-in counter for baggage tagging.
Airport Check-In:
  • Available at Air India Express check-in counters, which close 60 minutes before departure for both domestic and international flights. Boarding gates close 20 minutes before departure.
  • Passengers must present their Itinerary Receipt (ITR) or e-ticket, along with valid identification (e.g., Aadhaar for domestic, passport for international). Staff will verify documents, tag checked baggage, and issue the boarding pass.
  • Recommended for passengers with special equipment, excess baggage, or those requiring assistance.

Boarding Pass Requirements

  • Identification:

    • Domestic Travel: The name on the boarding pass must match the passenger’s valid ID (e.g., Aadhaar, voter ID, or other acceptable identification).

    • International Travel: The name must match the passport exactly. Passengers with a single name on travel documents may face restrictions in certain countries (e.g., UAE).

  • Advance Passenger Information (API): For international flights, passengers may need to provide API details. Failure to obtain API approval may result in denied boarding, with the option for a free date change to the next available flight (fare difference may apply).

  • Name Corrections: Limited to one correction per passenger, not permitted within 24 hours of departure. A new booking with applicable fare differences may be required.

Special Considerations

Passengers with Baggage:
  • After online check-in, passengers with checked baggage must visit the check-in counter or self-baggage drop (where available) for baggage tagging. Staff will verify the boarding pass/confirmation slip and ID before tagging baggage.
  • The Xpress Ahead service offers priority check-in, boarding, and baggage delivery for a fee, enhancing the travel experience.
Passengers with Special Needs: Those requiring assistance (e.g., unaccompanied minors, passengers with medical conditions, or mobility needs) must check in at the airport counter to ensure proper document verification and accommodation.

Denied Boarding: Passengers may be denied boarding if their name on the boarding pass does not match their ID, if they lack required travel documents (e.g., visas, “OK to Board” message), or if deemed unfit to travel due to medical conditions or intoxication. In such cases, no refund (except taxes) is provided.

Tips for Passengers

  • Verify Details: Ensure the name on the booking matches the ID exactly to avoid boarding issues. Double-check visa and documentation requirements for international travel.
  • Early Check-In: Complete online check-in early to secure preferred seats and avoid last-minute issues. Arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights.
  • Digital Convenience: Save the mobile boarding pass for domestic flights to streamline security checks. For international flights, carry a printed confirmation slip and passport.

Contact Support: For queries or assistance, contact the 24/7 Air India Express Contact Centre at +91 124 443 5600 or +91 124 443 5601, or use the online Customer Support Portal.
