The name of the ruins derived from a Gujarati word Chhatris, because the roof of this ruin is umbrella shaped, hence the name Chhatedi. The Royal cenotaphs are usually the resting place of the rulers of the region. Locals treat the structures with respect and expect the tourist to do the same.

The Construction of Chhatedi

The Chhatedi were constructed by the Jadeja rulers in the 18th century.  The place is not well known between the tourists as it is not promoted by the tourism department. Even if you are visiting Bhuj for a day excursion then add this destination on your itinerary and we are sure it will not disappoint you.

The place is well known between the locals, and they will surely guide you to the destined location. One needs to enter Chhatedi through a narrow entrance gate and one needs to pay no cost for the same. You will witness locals generally spending time with their friends or family.

The Essence of Sthal

This place is samadhi sthal of royal families of Bhuj and not a cemetery. The ground was used to cremate the king and his family members and then there samadhi was created on the same and they covered the same with beautiful Chhatris. In Hinduism samadhi is given to those who are believed, that their soul has been liberated.

One will find on visiting Chattedi a big fence area with few samadhis and temples. The biggest structure here is Rao Lakhpatji of Kutch and his queens. Each cenotaph as has been intricately carved in traditional designs and bear icons and each one of them is different from the other. The monuments are in ruins but the carvings and stone details are intricate and beautiful.

The place was hit by earthquake in 2001 which was also the major reason why the place has been destroyed. The structures were saved by the Archaeological Survey of India and gave them a new life.  Despite being damaged by the earthquake it still gleams the historic wave of the ruins of the royal.
