Great tour with fabulous commentary

This was a curate egg of a tour The first half was amazing as there were very few people on the tour The second half was ruined by a group who were loud and sadly inconsiderate We could not hear the commentary.Although not the bus tour fault.It may be useful to announce that people wish to hear the commentary I do not expect people to be like monks but it was such a shame as the guide was fascinating

Guide was excellent

We find these tours are an excellent way of finding you bearings when introduced to a new area. Our tour guide on the afternoon of Sunday 16th June was clearly a local and excellent at his job. I loved the variety of information he was able to give us. He knowledgeable and enthusiastic about York; delivering in a charming and engaging manner. The weather was not great this weekend for June, and I'll be delighted to revisit York, confident the guide has left me well informed what I places I might visit next time that I didn't fit in during this trip! It was such a treat to get a real life guide instead of relying upon the use of earphones! Thankyou for a great experience!

Great tour

This was a great hop on hop off bus. This tour had a tour guide not the recorded commentary. It is a hour ride around York and gives a great overview of the city.

Great but watch your head

An enjoyable ride which takes you through the streets of York where you see the usual landmarks such as Clifford’s Tower, Memorial Gardens, etc but also to some unexpected ones like the smallest house in York and the Former Terrys Chocolate Factory. Added bonuses include discounts on the Roman Bath Museum and Yorks Chocolate Story (we saw the latter which was an enjoyable experience) and if you pay al little extra you can go on a city cruise along the River Ouse. Now about what I said in the title about minding your head, there are low hanging tree branches near the racecourse and if you sit in the open top area you can get hit in the face with many of them.

Informative,dog friendly and nice staff.

We were lucky that we had live commentary rather than a CD. Very dog friendly and lovely staff at the ticket stands. Great for a flying visit to the city. Gives you a good overview of what you want to see and then go back to it.

Great tour

A great way to get the lay of the land and hear some history. We went around a time and a half before we decided to get off.

Nice relaxing and educational trip around York. Good service and very helpful staff. Safe your time and also it is while day ticket

Irritating guide but great city

What a shame the guide was so tedious. It’s a fabulous city full of fascinating buildings but the guide gave us information about the most tedious details with a big chip on his shoulder. I know all about a pizza restaurant!

The live commentary and the weather was also good. Which of course is outside the control of the tour operator.

Excellent day out!

The weather was terrible, the tour guide was EXCELLENT! Entertaining and informative. Look out for the Geordie, he was brilliant.

Very poor customer care

These tours do not run to time. They skip stops. We waited at stop 12 for 45 mins as several buses did not arrive they disappeared along Nunnery Lane, leaving elderly people who were unable to stand for such along time.

Five Stars are simply not enough

Its a pity you can only give 5 stars because York City Sightseeing deserve a lot more. The drivers are friendly and helpful and the guides are knowlegable and entertaining, with customer service a priority. They all have different areas of specialism so my advice is to try as many different guides as you can. Its such a pity they dont do a spooky tour from time to time to replace the awful one currently running. A definate must do whilst in York, and have no hesitation in recommending this fantastic service. Travel Red, you will definately not be disappointed

Tour guide/ driver - great. Poor customer service and communication.

Firstly I’d like to say that the tour guide, driver and the tour itself is great - what was lacking was poor organisation and communication. We purchased the 24hour pass. We usually join the bus and do the full tour then as it says use the ticket to ‘hop on and off ‘ throughout the day. The first issue was the lack of tour buses - after waiting 50 minutes at the stop with no bus appearing, I decided to phone the local company to check they were running. I called and called many times with nobody answering the phone. I then called the national number and after waiting in a queue did get through to an operator who said that all they could do was contact the local number and phone me back - we had by this time been waiting over an hour - wasted time out our day. We were just about to give up when a bus eventually arrived. The guide on the bus was great - very knowledgeable and friendly. We did the whole tour and it was great. We checked with the guide / driver about times of the last tour as we wanted to go round again before getting off for dinner in York. We tried later in the afternoon but again no bus came so we left it just to do the last tour of the day at 5:30. We duly arrived in plenty of time at the first stop and the bus arrived at 5:30 - great except we were then told that they were cancelling the last tour of the day! No reason given. I decided to email the local contact and the national company about this but also to let them know it was no reflection on the guide or driver. That email was now sent over 2 weeks ago and I’ve had no reply or answer to my emails which I think is poor customer service. We love using the ‘Hop on, hop off’ tours all over the world when travelling but sadly this experience and poor customer service was disappointing.

Great tour with lots of info

I’m not a lover of these hop on hop off buses!! But this one hit the mark. We’d been walking around the walls and the castle museum when we opted for a sit down on the bus. Sun streaming down we set off and the commentary by the lady on board was just exceptional. We Learnt and saw so much more that I think I maybe a converted hop on hop off rider. Very interesting

Excellent

The tour guide was very interesting and made the trip interesting and at times humorous When getting off you had plenty time to decide and did not wait long when getting back on after visiting the attractions which were close to stops.

Great way to get a feel for the city

We were fortunate to get front seats on top level of the bus and had great views. We initially bought 24 hour tickets but decided at the end of the day to extend it to 48 hours. We were able to upgrade for 6 pounds.

Great way to see a new place

The day was very cold so the bus was an excellent way to find our way around the city, while remaining warm and relaxed

Informative with fun tour guide

After a couple of hours in excellent York Castle Museum, felt a nice sit down tour would be just the ticket and it was. On board narration from humorous Geordie guide was excellent and informative. He encouraged interaction and questions, and was a mine of information. Gave ideas of several places and areas of city to go back to.

Great way to get around the city when you don't know where anything is.

We got on the hop on hop off bus because my friend has mobility issues. It was great. We managed to target particular tourist attractions - Shamble, York Minster, Clifford's Tower. It gave us a great way to get around the city without getting wet on a up and down day. The drivers and people at the stops were very helpful and we had a live tour guide on one of the buses who helped point us in the right direction.

We find it’s the best way to start the holiday, you find out all the places you would like to visit.

Affordable quick tour

Excellent guide-commentator and overall nice, well-paced city bus tour. The 3.5 jack ports for headphones, and USB ports in the back of sits would benefit from maintenance, though - half of what I tried was not working.

Good but not great.

Interesting tour. We have used hop on tours in many cities across the World and loved most of them. Found the narration on this tour really annoying as it seemed to refer to the narrators point of view rather than history. The narration was very hesitant with too many filler words.

Excellent way to see the city and hear about it's history

This is the best way to get your bearings if this fabulous city. The staff are really helpful and they have great knowledge of the history of the area. Well worth the money as you can hop on and off all day.

An excellent way to get your bearings and a very interesting introduction to the history of York. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a live commentary, but the recorded commentary is excellent too. The ticket lasts for 24 hours, so over two days and multiple stops, we did 2 1/2 circuits. The recorded commentary is clearly gps linked, so if the bus is delayed at traffic lights for example, the commentary is more in depth and the bus is moving, you get plenty of notification of which way to look and what to lookout for. Better still is the live commentary from Mark. Mark has a very in-depth knowledge of York and its history throughout the last 2000 years. Mark’s comentary is amusing and interesting. The only problem with Mark is, he’s a Sunderland fan; ah well, it’s not his fault he has that affliction! All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience and excellent value. Brilliant. If you can get a live guide all the better.

Just do it. It is a great intro to the city. The recorded audio is fine but if you can get a live guide all the better. Mark is brilliant - not just York facts. We live in York and done it several times when we have visitors. Give it a go.

Great way to start your trip to York

Very informative and interesting hour spent in the company of the extremely knowledgeable and fun Sunderland supporting Geordie tour guide who amended the trip to include facts about each of the visitors’ home towns!

Great introduction

Mark (guide) and Tom (driver) were both wonderful and gave a great introduction to the city. Mark's knowledge of the city and further afield was extensive.

Great knowledgeable guide made the experience very interesting and helped us know when to get off for the attraction we wanted.

Nice easy way to see York

Pre booked the tickets prior to visiting which was easy and also saved 10%. Joined the bus at Peasholme Green and went round and done the whole loop which was listening to a pre recorded tape about building and historical information which was really great. Both the driver and the lady attendant on the bus were nice and polite. We returned in the afternoon and joined the bus at Stonebow to get off at Museum gardens as the Geordie attendant didn’t stop waffling on the microphone about anything and also about places of no significance to York. I was born in York so know the area etc very well and he was taking a load of rubbish.

Bloody Great

Fantastic value for money for £16 for a single and the information was non-stop on the bus. The staff to help you on the bus and generally so keep me informed but second none thank you very much

Great way to see the city. Excellent tour guide, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A good way to spend an hour or so and we learnt lots about York

Ideal to get round York if you’re senior citizen

Me and my friends were visiting York for the day, so we thought we’ll try this bus tour to see the sites of York.. Worth every penny me and all my friends really enjoyed it and was very good value for money and we saw great building round york. We are all senior citizens so this is a great way to get round if you are a certain age.

We love the city sightseeing tours as they are a great way to learn everything you need. In York, we had a guide on the bus which was great, very knowledgeable and learnt all we needed to about York.

A great way to see York in a day. The tour was informative and was steeped in historical facts! We particularly enjoyed the scenery from the open top deck.

A good tour

A good tour and our guide was funny and knowledgeable. Whole tour takes an hour. A good start to a visit to York. Guide gave is lots of good tips for visiting other attractions in York.

Great way to see York. Hop on Hop off worked out very well. Never had to wait long for another bus. Narration was excellent and audio was exceptionally clear clear. Would highly recommend.

A Great way to explore the city!

An ideal way to see the city. The ability to get on and off at your preferred stops is great, but doing the complete 1 hour tour in one go is also handy if you haven't pre-planned your itinerary. You can listen to the commentary and then go round again, and hop off to explore the places that sound interesting.

We had booked on another hop on tour which let us down very badly and left us stranded ,but we were rescued by your very friendly and excellent driver who took us back to our lodgings , wonderful service

Essential starting point for a visit

Recommended here and by a regular visitor to the city. Easy starting point to locate (just outside the city walls). Yes, the ticket is valid for 24hrs, though cannot see many people using that. Tour guide was excellent and readily filled the time when traffic got slower. An excellent starting point for a visit.

great introduction to York. Sat up top where the views were amazing. Our guide was very good as well as funny. Gave us lots of good advice about places to visit.

Best way to see the city

Very informative reasonable price and very regular. Whenever we go to a new city for a few days we always take a red bud tour, if available . Never been let down yet from Berlin to New York, Toronto to Glasgow. Well informed very relaxed and a great way to see and learn about the city

Great way to see the City & decide want you wish to explore

Both tour guides were very informative- great views of the tourist sites in York - very helpful driver when we wished to get off at The Convent.

Excellent service from a friendly and helpful bunch of people

We went around the full loop in one go first to get a lay of the land and then stopped at the attractions that most interested us. The guides were excellent, answered any questions and provided information on where to go in the evening for a meal and entertainment. I highly recommend this service. I recommend the crypt of York Minster where the Roman remains can be viewed.

Perfect way to see a city

Whenever we visit a new area we look for a bus tour as this is a great way to get a quick overview and to identify sites to visit later. York is seeped in history so the tour is interesting and visits all the obvious sites. Obviously you can get off and on and as the ticket lasts for 24 hours, you could use it for two days. It's great value and the perfect way to see a city

Informative and enjoyable

We enjoyed seeing the sights without lots of walking in between for the little legs in the family. Lots of interesting facts and a lovely, friendly driver complete with dad jokes for every occasion! Great day!
