Sound of Movies: Musical Tour to Salzburg from Vienna

A good mix

This was a lovely tour! It was a nice blend of Sound of Music locations and stories, Mozart stories and places, and general facts about Austria.

Fun trip

Very informative info from the Salzburg local guide Natasha . Although it is tiring but the overall the experience is great. Just a pity that I did not get a chance to purchase some local souvenirs. Having said that the people from different countries which make up of this group leaves me with fond memories

Not this one

A rushed tour doing it simultaneously in Russian and English is no good for anyone. Especially the poor tour guide. Thought it was English only. There are multiple tour operators. Do your homework

It was great to see some of the places where the show was filmed, i liked seeing the church but disappointed the tour guide didnt take us to the original church where Maria got married in the film. Loved Mirabell gardens & mozarts birth place.

still a good experience going to the sound of music location. but some of the things our tourist gude was telling we couldnt understand.

Too long unless you have a day to spare

I’m not sure I would call this a Sound of Music Tour as it was more a history tour of Vienna, Austria with a touch of Sound and Mozart. You visit some of the sights from the movie but the ones you really want to visit - the Abby, the Von Trapp residents - well you don’t get to see. The Von Trapp residents is now a hotel that you drive by and the guide did not prepare us to get our camera ready to snap a photo. Also - this was a 12+ hour bus tour. I’m not opposed to small children attending but there was an under 14 month old child on the bus that cried for a few hours on the tour, making it hard to hear and enjoy. I applaud the parents for taking a child this young on a tour this long but I was more concerned for the safely of the child as Viator had no car seat on the bus. 12 hours and no car seat? I’m from the US so maybe this is standard practice?

Viator did not deliver as promised

1. This was supposed to be the Sounds of Movies tour but our guide only wanted to talk about Mozart. For Sound of music she would just say oh it’s over there but who cares? No time for photos for sound of music but plenty for Mozart. This is not fair or as advertised. 2. We were 7 people squished into a van and the middle person in the back could not see or photograph anything. .3. The guide was in the first van and we did not hear most of the time anything she was saying. Our contract said we would receive a guided tour there and back. Because I complained the guide drove with us on the way back to repeat what she said on the way there. This still only left us with a guided tour for half the driving time. The description says there and back. Also we were then 9 people in the van now which was too crowded for a 3 hour drive.We should have been told 24 hours before that it would be two mini vans with no actual guide in our vehicle and let us decide. We would have cancelled for sure. The 7Travel person I spoke with when I called to complain while at the rest stop told me it was a mistake to make us use the audio guides in the vehicles. But his solution was not helpful nor did it fulfill the description of the tour as promised.We are all 4 if us senior citizens, two if ys are overweight and one is 88 years old. Travelling on a bus would have been easier than crawling into the back of a crowded basic mini van with limited air circulation.

Fun Sound of Music trip!

Awesome trip. Saw many things and Lydia our guide was excellent! Very knowledgable, helpful and entertaining. I definitely recommend this trip!

Poor

Too fast. No time to take pictures. The bus did not have air conditioning and was a bit uncomfortable (small). No time for shopping. My wife even star crying at one point due to the fast pace tour. This was one of my bucket list and the experience was not the best. Many of the customers were complaining about it. Not worth the money.

Regardless of the Airconditioner breakdown. It was Great

I rated poor in the reason of the van was not having a proper air conditioner. Under the 85 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Our guide Lydia and driver Danny was very much concerned but unfortunately can’t do anything. Lydia was full of knowledge on her job and Driver Danny was a carefull driver.

Memorable

The most memorable part was going to the church of st Michael where Maria and captain von trap got married and we were happy that a lot of Mozart was included in the trip like the house where he was born etc . However the trip felt too rushed and the was a 35 degrees day and the bus air conditioning was not working well so we were did not have a good journey . Also would have liked to see the abbey in Salzburg which was in the old town but we were told it was 20 minute walk back and forth and we had no time .

Wonderful experience

It was raining all day but we enjoyed the tour. The guide was helpful and full of energy. I would recommend this tour.

Excellent guide and...

Excellent guide and enjoyed the sites in Salzberg. Go on a nice day, would not be as good if bad weather.

Unfortunately our guide...

Unfortunately our guide spoke very slow and had to also speak in two languages. This disrupted the flow and when we finally got to Salzburg, we had limited time with the local tour guide. Very disappointed!

Tour Vienna-Salzburg

Excellent tour: good quality of the bus conditions, very good explanation of all steps. Especial gratitude to our guide Lidia for her enormous efforts during many hours of this tour.

Very poor experience

This tour is ill considered from the start, 8 hours in a coach is never a good starting point for a day long tour. Viator mis-sell the tour stating a maximum of 30 people - there well over 40 on this trip which meant the day was totally unstructured with timings amiss all day. If you have children, don’t book this tour! It is too long and having young children bored on long coach trips ruins it for everyone else! Billed as a thirteen hour trip, it was over 15 hours for us and we did not return until after 10pm from a 7.30 start. It was also not overly Sound of Music, particularly in Salzburg which was more about Mozart than the Sound of Music. You could barely hear the guide on the bus due to her mumbling and all the screaming kids (see above). I have done many tours with Viator which have all been great except this one - I will be very cautious using Viator again after this experience.

Excellent tour but not really a sound of music tour

We had a lovely time on this tour! Our tour guide, Lidia, was amazing. She was very knowledgeable about the history of Austria and was entertaining. She conducted the tour in English and Russian which meant that on the way to Salzburg she talked non-stop. The biggest downside is that is supposed to be a Sound of Music tour. We did see the church used for filming the wedding, the area where the Trapp family hid in the movie at the end, and the gazebo for the 16 going on 17 song. We saw many amazing things including Lake Mondsee. When we toured Salzburg though it was just a city tour and other than the graveyard where they hid, there were only mentions of things like up there is the convent where Maria von Trapp was a novice. We actually had some ladies leave the tour and take the train back because it was not what they expected. So if you want a terrific historical tour with some sound of music thrown in this was an excellent tour. If you want a true sound of music tour, look for another tour where the focus is sound of music! We really did enjoy this day trip!

Good but rush.

Overall is a good trip. However not much time in each stop as expected. Also on the way back only stopped at one place for view, not as listed on the trip details.

We thought that there would be more Sound of Music sites and information. We also felt rushed and held to a very tight timetable.

Not as described , pick another tour group

The FAQ indicated that we would visit several landmarks , but we did not. Schloss hellbrunn and Schloss leopoldskron were not included, nor a walking tour through Mondsee or St Michael’s church. When several people asked the guide about them, she did not provide an answer . The Nonnberg Convent was pointed out to us and we were told we could visit in our free time, but the tour description included this location. The local tour guide walked very fast through the town, she did not pay attention if the group was keeping up, and even though it was extremely crowded in Salzburg that day, she did not hold her umbrella up for us to find her . She did not stop long enough for us to take photos anywhere .

I guess the tour guide in Salzburg should be a little slow and give us a chance to go slow and we could take pictures.

Excellent

Our trip was on 1st October 2022 from Vienna to Salzburg and it was gone on the time schedule and was made very informative with history and the Sound of Music story to us. Catherine the guide and Daniel the driver both were very professional on their task ,very friendly and well looked after us and especially the driving was very safe and felt very comfortable throughout the entire trip. Highly recommended. Excellent tour. Congratulations!

Thought we were on the wrong tour

What no one tells you before you book this tour, is that Austrians hate this movie. They do not like to be reminded of their WWII history. The walking tour felt more like a Mozart life tour and we were left to find a lot of the landmarks on our own. Saltzburg itself is beautiful and worth the visit, however if you’re looking for enthusiasm from the guides re the movie, you should probably book a different tour.

Excellent tour,but a long day(13 hours)

Tour. Director was excellent. Bus driver very professional. Having earphones for the 90 minute walking tour was a big plus.

Fab tour for anyone, not just musical fans!

An excellent day trip to Salzburg and surrounding areas, ideal for fans of the musical who want to visit the iconic sites of the movie and for those that aren’t - we got lots of fun tidbits about how Austrians really feel about it, as well as learning lots of other bits of history and culture along the way. The other places visited were also beautiful. It was raining quite heavily on our tour, and our guides Katrin and Natasha were brilliant at making sure the tour continued with grace and humour. Bring a jacket or umbrella even if you are coming from sunny Vienna in the summer!

One of best excursions I...

One of best excursions I have ever enjoyed. Tour guides were extremely knowledgable, all I will say is be prepared for a bit of walking, but it is worth every penny

An amazing tour through the alps to the home of sound of music

Catherine was our guide she was amazing she showed us everything listed and was just a nice person to be a round, told us lots of fun facts and interesting stories she is an asset to your team! The tour was amazing we luckily had sub so it made everything look so pretty and beautiful

Memorable day reliving a memorable a movie

All the Sound of Music sites, Katherine our amazing tour guide, and the other passengers we spent the day with was magical. The only recommendation would be to give us some free time in Salzburg.

A real sense of the past

The tour was well organised and the guide was full of relevant information. Saltzberg is a beautiful town and well worth the visit. However, the tour although it visits some of the films locations, you are unable to stand in or on the actual sets (e.g. the steps or stand inside the gazebo).

Snow and music in Salzburg

What a great tour. The drive is very long but our busdriver were excellent and Daria our guide kept us informed with very interesting details and music from Vienna to Salzburg. Very professional. It rained but we still got to see everything. Beautiful views on the way to Salzburg. Excellent and knowledgeable guide in Salzburg. Defnitely a tour to do.

Too long riding on the bus

Guides were great but the van was very crowded and uncomfortable. The bus ride from Vienna and back was too long. SoM touring/sightseeing was too short.

Excellent experience

The drive was a little long but the experience was great. A lot of trivia information by driver and tour guide.

Feeling Fearful

The driver drive at high speeds, very irrational changing lanes without leaving room for cars in front of him causing him to have to slam on the brakes multiple times. Between driving inabilities and his constant texting, he will eventually cause an accident or worse. This completely ruined the entire trip. You shouldn’t have to fear for you life when on a Viator trip. We have used Viator for the last several years and this was the absolute worst experience we have ever had.

I was very glad to be able to see many locations of the film, and to learn many things about the real family!

Excellent tour

This was a fun experience. It lasted the entire day. We were able to see all the big sites from the movie and a lot of Salzburg, Lake Mondsee, and more! If you go, just bring an umbrella or a poncho. It rained for about an hour and a half.

Loved all the sound of music sights!

This is a great tour. Sound of music fans will love it. The only negative I can say is, we stop at 10am and can have a quick snack, then by the time you get to Salzburg it’s 130-2, and you go straight to a 2 hour walking tour. So it’s 4 before you can have lunch. The tour is great and if you are a sound of music fan you will love it. I just suggest bringing some snacks with you because it’s a long day with no food. Also bring water, as they don’t provide any water. Other then that it is very enjoyable.

Great day trip

This day trip was the highlight of our stay in Austria. Our Vienna guide Ilona was very knowledgeable and friendly, as was Salzburg guide Natasha. I have MD and walk with a cane. Ilona was considerate and helped me keep up with the walking tour group. Salzburg was wonderful and it was surreal to stand in and experience so many Sound of Music locations, to sing the songs in the tour van and to see the birthplace of Mozart. If you have mobility issues Salzburg can be a challenge - a lot more uneven cobblestone than Vuenna! Also the walking tour is fast paced. We will remember this day trip forever. Great scenery. Poor service.

Driver arrived and appeared either sick, hungover or otherwise disinterested. He would answer direct questions but the audio system was not working and we couldn’t hear or understand him. He gave us no info about the places we were visiting. We met another tour guide in Salzburg who was nice but ran quickly through sights never offering us a break for restroom or to sit (for 2 hours) all in all we walked 5 miles that day.

This was one of my favorite things!

I was hesitant to book as there weren't many reviews or info. Yet we had a great time! It was my mom's highlight. We were picked up from our hotel in a 8 passenger van in the time frame on our voucher (I do wish it was a smaller time frame). On our drive to Salzburg we made a rest stop (restroom/food for 15 min) and then went to St. Michael's to see where they filmed the wedding scene (restrooms available). Then we had quick photo ops to view the Mondsee Lake and a mountain. We stopped at Hellbrung Palace to view the gazebo (restrooms available). We also stopped at the Palace Leopold to see the lake terrace. Along the way we were provided great information by Arman and got to listen to the soundtrack. There is a microphone in the van to hear the driver. We arrived in Salzburg at 1:40 pm and began our walking tour with a different guide. Some people were hungry. (I suggest that they either bring a sack lunch or buy food at that first rest stop). We went by various sights in Salzburg related to the film: the Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, the catacombs, and the riding school. We also saw historical sights like Mozart's home, oldest restaurant, and the Cathedral where Mozart was baptized. There is a uphill walk to the convent so those with mobility issues take note. We had about 2 hrs of free time after the tour. Since I had been before I took time to eat and went into a few shops. Pick up spot and time was made very clear. On our drive back we made one stop for restrooms/food. We listened to Mozart on the way back. I would recommend this company for this tour. Like I mentioned, it is a very later lunch so plan for that. But overall it was a nice day and organized well.

Sound of Music tour from Vienna

We were picked up on time, and were given a morning break enroute at a were nice place for coffee and snacks. Loved the entire trip, the stop at the moonlake , the church where Maria got married and the walking tour of Salzburg city. If there is anything I would have you change, it would be nice to hve a break before the walking tour at a restaurant for lunch rather than a break after the walking tour. Nice touch listening to the songs enroute (our guide told us we have to sing along & yes we did) and nicer still watching the movie on the way back to Vienna Another request I would make,pick up is only from some hotels,ours was not one of them I offered to pay them taxi fare if they have us picked up but were told to make our own way to a pick up spot, would be nice to be picked up from all hotels All in all we had a really good time. Thank you

Perfect Tour

The "Sound of Movies" day trip to Salzburg was a highlight of our trip to Austria. Arman, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable - not only were there lots of fun Sound of Music sites and stories (not to mention singing Rodgers and Hammerstein songs along the way), but Arman also knew all about the city's history and historical sites of interest. We learned about the emperors and saints who shaped the city, and more about Mozart, of course. There was such a wealth of information and so many wonderful places to see - for a single day tour, we saw a lot! Besides being a big Sound of Music fan, I'm also a history buff, so this tour was perfect for me. Arman walked our legs off, but it was well worth it. We loved Salzburg and loved the tour.

NOT RECOMMENDED

We were picked up in a small minivan for the tour. Driver was very difficult to understand, the PA in the car was terrible, it just sounded like he was talking into a pillow stuffed around his face. Our first stop breakfast at 8am for 1/2 hr was less than an hour after we started the tour, was was silly. We only had very brief stops at some of the Sound of Music locations, most just looking out the car windows, and only a 5 minute stop where the Gazebo is, before told to hurry back in car. Then we stopped for a 15 minute look at some expensive hotel (nobody interested as it had nothing to do with Sound of Music). Next stop was Salzberg about 2pm where we were handed over to a local guide & told to be back at car by 5.15pm (We had not had a toilet stop or lunch stop at this stage) We were then rush around Salberg & saw a few Sound of music locations like The Gate, Abbey & Rock Riding School, & very rushed. The guide was more interested in showing us Mozart locations more than anything. At 4.15 she left us all in the middle of the town square & said that was end of tour. Everyone asked where the toilets were (8 1/2 hours after our last stop), where to get something to eat & more important how do we get back to the car? We only had an hour free time & the walk back to car took 20 mins walking fast. This was by far the worst tour I have ever done, & I was so looking forward to it.

Very good

A long day -- 8 AM till 7:30, Armand, our driver, was very good -- on the way out., he gave us lots of interesting history & facts. He has a somewhat heavy Russian accent that was difficult to understand at first -- when speaking in person, it was much easier. I realized that he holds the mike too close to his mouth -- he needs a bit of training there. Our local guide in Salzburg was Natasha -- again very good and excellent English. We were a small group (7), but it was still sometimes hard to hear her -- would have been nice to have those earphones other groups seemed to have so you could be a bit away and still hear her narration. She was great in that she asked the group "Sound of Music" or Salzburg -- and most of us wanted Salzburg -- so we got the best of both worlds and she was very knowledgeable about the city. My only criticism would be the stops -- one 1/2 way there at @ 9;30 AM and the other half way back - both for @ 30 minutes. The problem was that when we got to Salzburg, we immediately went on tour and didn't have time for lunch until 3:30 PM. I would suggest 10 min pit stops going and coming and an hour for a quick lunch upon arrival in Salzburg.

Лидия не просто показала нам Австрию, она раскрыла перед нами иную чарующую Австрию в которую хочется приехать снова.
