my husband, teenage son and I finished our stay in Udipur with a great cooking class with Durga. It was fun to learn about Indian cuisine and the meal was delicious. Friendly familly ! highly recommend it

Fab time cooking

We had a fab time at Durgas cooking class. She's really lovely, has a fab sense of humour and the food is amazing. We've got a pdf of all the recipes to try at home. We cook Indian food at home a lot but still gained a lot of tips that you can't get from a book - the consistency of pakora batter, just when chapati dough is ready etc.

Enjoy learned the basic of Indian cooking

I took the cooking class together with my husband and one other guest at the home stay. Durga suggested some dishes and we also got to wish for some. First we learned how to make pakora with vegetables and masala chai, which we got to enjoy before continuing our class. The rest of our class offered a perfect mix of watching Durga explaining or another cooking and trying yourself. We ended the whole thing enjoying our several meals: different types of bread, jeera rice and many kinds of vegetable dishes. And now we have all and more of the recipes in a file on WhatsApp. We enjoyed to cook our own food. Highly recommended!

Phenomenal cooking class experience with the lovely, warm Durga!

Durga’s cooking class was absolutely phenomenal!! She (and her entire family) are so warm and welcoming, and the cooking experience was fantastic. She let us pick from a selection of dishes (so that we made sure to learn our favourites) and, throughout the cooking, she was super patient, humourous (cracking lots of jokes), and insightful (explaining everything we were doing and how we could adapt things at home). And the food itself was SO GOOD! We made daal fry, veg biryani, mixed veg curry, bhindi masala, chapatis, and parathas - so you really get a big, good selection - and she made sure to send us all the recipes afterwards. The class was also very easy to arrange, with her/her family being really helpful and responsive over WhatsApp. Highly recommend, this is such good value and just a lovely way to spend an afternoon!

We had a wonderful time with Durga. She is an absolute expert in the kitchen and we learned the joys and simplicity of Indian home cooking with some laughs along the way. I'd recommend this class to anyone spending a couple days in Udaipur.

We had a lovely and informative lesson with Durga. She is excellent at explaining and has the patience of a saint. All the food we made was delicious and she took the time to explain how the base sauces served for many dishes. Thank you for the great experience!

Enjoyable hands on teaching

I really enjoyed this class. Durga is an excellent cook who clearly explains, teaches, entertains. I have enormous respect for this lovely lady. This was a hands on class and then we got to eat our dinner including the chapatis. Then we were sent all the recipes. Marvellous!

Best cooking class experience! Must do!

Wow! What an amazing cooking class! The best one we have ever done! Mitali and her mother were such wonderful teachers and we learnt how to cook so many amazing dishes and chai too! The recipes were also sent to us immediately after so we can cook the dishes at home. Not only did we learn to cook everything, Mitali and her family also taught us so much about Indian culture. 100% recommend! Thank you so much!

Awesome class

Really fun cooking class. Durga and her family are so welcoming and friendly. The food we learned to make was delicious and I will definitely make it at home. How to adapt the recipes was explained really clearly. It was 100% a great experience.

An Udaipur highlight ✨

We had a great time! Durga is a very nice lady with good sense of humour and her family also very lovely. We got to pick what we wanted to cook from her menu which was very flexible. Most fresh ingredients had come from her family farm and she also makes her own spice powders which you can tell the difference. Knows her stuff if we asked about any other recipes too. We made 7 things all together which were very delicious and excited to make them again ourselves with the recipes. Thank you!

Amazing cooking class with such a kind host

I would highly recommend doing this cooking class, and if you're looking for accommodation the Homestay is lovely too! Durga and her whole family are so kind and welcoming and that's what makes the whole experience a treat. We made the things that we wanted to make: chai, pakora, bindi masala and daal as well as rice and different breads -

Learning to cook in Udaipur!

Wow! The one thing I desperately wanted to do on our trip to India was to learn how to cook some of the amazing food. This was the best place to do it! Luga and her family are so sweet and their home is just gorgeous, with a clean kitchen and lovely outdoor garden/dining room. We learned the importance of masala (combination of spices used). We cooked chapati, and chai to start, along with six other dishes!! It was outstanding and so much fun! Can’t wait to take these recipes home with me!

The best!

Durga’s cooking class was fantastic. She asked us what dishes we would like to learn to cook - altogether we made 10 dishes! First we made delicious Pakoras with coriander chutney, paired with Durga’s masala chai recipe (soooo good), then we made potatoes and onion (aloo pyaaj), dal fry, jheera rice, chapatis, aubergine and tomato curry, and a mixed veg curry. We learned so much - Durga is really great at explaining everything and telling us variations to do at home. She is also very funny and the whole day was very enjoyable! And the food was DELICIOUS.

Awesome class!

Durgan did such a great job explaining basically all of North India’s dishes. We cooked a huge variety of dishes that all ended up so tasty! The whole family is very nice and Durga was so pleasant and patient with us. Highly recommended!

Making learning fun

Very good cooking class. Durga is very engaging and a great communicator. She designed the class around what we wanted to cook and to know. She was relaxed and confident - I learned a lot.

Amazing masterclass cooking experience

Amazing cooking class from Durga in Udaipur. We were in Udaipur for a few days so decided to take a cooking class and so glad we chose Durga! We made pakora and chai from scratch along with curry, dal fry, biriyani and fresh chapatti and paratha. Durga and all of her family were so warm and welcoming and we received so many tips and tricks for cooking Indian food that will stay with us forever. Definitely a trip highlight and hope to visit again some time in the future!

Sensational, authentic, and delicious!

Ever wondered how real Indian food is cooked in a family home? Durga welcomed us into her home, and spent 3 hours in her kitchen with us, while we learned in a completely hands-on way, how to cook 5 dishes, 1 chutney, and traditional chai tea! Her kitchen is clean, and she used sterile water in the cooking, so Western stomachs will be fine! I am writing this review several days after the class, and neither myself or my husband got sick. I know this is a concern for many Western travellers. One big plus is that she has zero meat in the kitchen. This drastically reduces risk of getting ill. Vegans can be accommodated too, as dairy is optional and she does not use eggs! I could be vegetarian the rest of my life if I ate food like this! So utterly full of nutrients and flavour. You can choose the level of spiciness, but for the chilli lovers out there, I highly recommend asking Durga to show you how to make Chilli Pakora - it packs a punch and has salty and sour noted... one of the yummiest things I have ever eaten. Pakora herself is just a delightful human being. So relaxed and passionate about sharing her knowledge. What she offers is priceless.

Amazing experience & family

We spent an incredible 4 hours with Durga and her family learning authentic vegetarian cooking. It was just my wife and I, and we were taken through 7 separate dishes. Learning how to make panoramic and masala chai first, we had a break before launching into Dal Fry, Paneer Tikka Masala, Veg Briyani and Chapati. Durga was friendly with a great sense of humour. She took the time to talk through preparation techniques and different dishes that could be made with the them. We would highly recommend Durga's

Cooking with Durga and her family was absolutely amazing experience. Both Durga and Dudi are great instructors. It was very fun and interesting; we had a large list of meals. we cooked a green chutney, made masala tea with alu pakora, then chapati, dhal, biryani and malai kofta. Instructions are very clear, and the class went really smoothly. All dishes were tasty, I enjoyed a lot. Also, I stayed more than week in their family stay guest house Black Peral, it was really nice and cozy. The family is very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Amazing cooking class with a lovely family :)

I totally recommend this experience if you are in Udaipur! Durga is an excellent woman, and amazing teacher :) she taught how to cook traditional Indian food and it was one of the most beautiful experience we had in India, specially cause we could enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening with this lovely family and share with them about life in their home, knowing more about Indian families and traditions from the inside. We called them to book with very short notice and they welcomed us in their home. Everything tasty and super funny! So contact them for an unforgettable experience in the beautiful Udaipur. Fun & instructive cookery class.

Durga was the most excellent teacher, funny, elegant & to the point with her technique & instruction. We relaxed & chatted over chai & pakora that Durga taught me to prepare. The cooking was fun ‘ then I enjoyed the meal I had prepared on the beautiful roof terrace whilst chatting to her husband.

Learn to cook in a welcoming kitchen

We had the most wonderful experience doing a cooking class today. We were given the option to choose a main course we'd like to learn which was really nice. We made lots of food (veg pakora, chai, day fry, palak paneer, veg biryani, chapati, paratha and lacha paratha) Everything was absolutely delicious 🤩😍 We learned so much from the couple teaching us and they were so friendly and welcoming. After the lady was so kind and did henna for me ! 💖 Highly recommend this cooking class!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

The food was delicious, we got all the recipes and are feeling confident to Cook at home in Australia. The family told us great stories about them and were completely open-mind to answer all our questions about the country and culture. We love the experience and definetely recommend to everyone.

Did a non veg cooking class with all the family! Wonderful evening, very welcoming home and tailored to every need. Cooked about 6 different items over 4 hours and was equally enjoyable and relaxed from first to last. A must do when in Udaipur 🥳

Amazing cooking class with the amazing Durga! Lasted around three hours. Food was delicious and quite healthy. Very flexible lesson which can be tailored to your needs.

Amazing cooking class!

We wanted to make a cooking class in Rajasthan, and when we arrived to the guest house to stay there (what was super nice aswell) and we saw their good organise and clean kitchen at the rooftop we knew immediately that we wanted to make it there. And was perfect! We chose the traditional Rajasthan cooking class and we learned a lot whit them, cause they where letting us prepare everything by ourselves. Was really nice experience, and they made it so funny :) After cooking we ate our own preparations and we loved them.. If we go back we will make a different cooking class, cause they have more options. Nice to meet you family, and thank you so much for this wonderful cooking class!

Awesome experience

Cooking with Durga and her family was a truly awesome experience. We cooked up some onion Baji and aloo pokora and enjoyed that with Masala Chai before moving onto cooking up three veg curries, with matar pulao, chapatis and paratha. Really fun and exceptional value. Highly recommend.

Great Experience

A great way to experience Indian food. Highly recommended. We cooked a variety of vegetarian dishes but as the sauce could be used a a base for chicken and fish do not be put off if you are not vegetarian.

Authentic Cooking Class!

Durga is a very talented cook and we really enjoyed this class! You get clear instructions on what’s going on and get to take turns to join in. It’s at the Black Pepper Guesthouse and was at least 4+ hours, as you make quite a few dishes, so give yourself enough time. The kitchen is clean and everything is washed in filtered water. They send you some of the recipes and some dishes you take notes for. The food was really delicious and really enjoyed sitting down with everyone at the end. Highly recommend!

Indian cooking class experience

We had a brilliant time learning how to make the base for Indian Curries, from which we now know how to make chicken tikka masala, butter chicken and lal mas. we also learned how to make chapati and paratha bread - who knew it could be so easy! Plus a delicious vegetable puleo rice. So we feel we know the basics and can’t wait to get experimenting. We were given all the recipes though only downside was there were no quantities. So top tip from us is to write down everything quantities wise as soon as you leave, or take a pen with you to write as you go. We tasted everything we made and it was asGood as you would get in a top class restaurant. Brilliant value informatively, charming and friendly family. Highly recommended.

A real authentic hands on experience

This was an amazing experience to learn how to cook a traditional Indian meal of your choice plus pakoras, dhal and chai. If anyone is travelling through India this is super handy if you want to impress your hosts or even your parents or friends back home! The family are incredibly friendly and are very good and clear with their instructions. I would definitely recommend and is cheaper than most other cooking classes!

Wonderful experience

My daughter and I took a cooking class with Durga and Dudi and had a great time. We were able to learn how to make chai, chapati, chutney, masala base sauce, jeera aloo, vegetable biryani, vegetable pakora and Dahl fry. Instructions are very clear and the class went really smoothly. Both Durga and Dudi are great instructors. We were at ease and had a fun time. Really reasonable price for the class, and tasting the results of our cooking was great fun! It's really an excellent way to learn more about the delicious food, and how to make it. Do make the time to take a cooking class with these lovely people!

Cooking class - very instructive and practical

Durga and her brother in law received us on the roof top of their guest house. It was just the two of us and we had a very nice time with them. They tought us al the basics and we could eat our own cooking - excellent ofcourse!

If you’re looking for a cooking lesson in Udaipur I would definitely recommend Durga cooking lesson at Black pepper guesthouse. Not only you’ll learn how to cook Indian food, but also you’ll have a great time in a really enjoying atmosphere. At the beginning of the lesson you can choose several dishes you want to cook. In our case: pakoras, chutney, 2 types of curries, 2 types of Rices, Indian chai and several types of chapati (regular, twin, parantha...). And after that, you enjoy eating the food you’ve just prepared in their nice rooftop. Undoubtedly it worths the price!!! Thank you so much Durga and Dudi for this great time!

Our expectations were exceeded!

We had a great experience at the Durga cooking class. We took the class alongside another couple and between the four of us we were able to choose what we were interested in learning about and then the class was tailored to suit us. The leaders of the class are very knowledgeable, friendly and patient. It seems as though they enjoyed teaching as much as we enjoyed learning! We learnt how to make Chai, Chutney, 3 types of Pakora, 2 types of rice, Butter Paneer Masala, Navratan Korma, Dal fry, Rothi and Paratha, as well as a basic gravy which acts as the base for many more dishes. The class is excellent value for money, especially as by the end of the session you have a full meal to enjoy in their cosy roof top terrace. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a cooking class and is looking for a fun and authentic experience!
