Mount Ijen Crater Tour From Ubud Bali

I did the mount Ijen trip with my boyfriend, and it surpassed all expectations. From the seamless organization to the impeccable service, we were amazed every step of the way. It all started with our very nice and careful driver, who picked us up early and made sure we were alright all the way. Huge thank you to you Gede! From being picked up at our hostel to the ferry ride to Java and throughout our stay, we felt well taken care of. Our tour guide at the mountain, Gun, was truly exceptional, making our experience unforgettable. The sights, especially the breathtaking blue fire and the turquoise lake, left us in awe. We even had the privilege of enjoying them without the usual crowds, making it even more special. This trip was an absolute highlight, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a memorable adventure.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE!

What a trip! Started with pick up at Ubud with our amazing driver Komang which was very attentive to our needs all the way to the boat. It is a long drive but traffic was on our side around 4 hours. Once there we were helped by a lady to cross to Java. Once there we had the friendly Andrew and Ismail who were the best! They took us to get the medical letter and to the mountain tracking start point. we had some coffee and we begin the tracking with our guide Reza. The tracking is more difficult than expected but 200% worth it. Even if not a weekend day it was busy but thanks to our guide we got ahead and had time to see the blue fire as well as the sunrise on top of the mountain. Our guide was so attentive as the way down to the blue flame can be challenging. If you listen to him no issues safety was. He took some nice pictures and we had a really good time. The return down is not easy. I think you need a good fitness level but some people offer carry up and down service for people that struggles so everyone can access. Overall we had everything included from breakfast (they gave us vegetarian but you need to ask before hand) to water and coffees and entry fees and boat ride. I recommend the private tour like we did for a better experience. Terima Kasih to all the amazing guides and drivers that gave us this experience.

Mount Ijen from Ubud

One of the best experience of my life! It was all perfect from the first moment. Top company! Big thanks to the drivers Farid and the guide Reza which was funny, had loads of knowledge and he was a formidable photographer. Must go if you in Bali.

The tour was amazing. The drivers and the guide was super gentle and made me comfortable during the all time. Super sympathic and nice guys. They solve everything for me. I didn’t have to worry to anything.

Amazing service, everyone took well care of us and everything followed the line up. Our drivers were good and so was our guide. We were by the blue fire on a good time and were able to walk up to see the amazing sunrise! Recommend!

Normally I don’t write reviews but this time I really feel like I should write it. I bought package from Bali included driver from Bali to ferry, someone who will take care of me on ferry Bali to Java, driver on Java, guide on Mt Ijen and breakfast. Driver who took me 4 hours from Ubud to Bali and back was lovely polite guy, he was on time both ways, I wish all good to him. Then some lady took me on ferry from Bali to Java at night time, on ferry there was a lot of men who kept harasing me, taking pictures and video of me, getting close to me, I felt the worst I felt during my two months in indonesia, the lady was sitting in front of me and she could hear everything but she was pretending like nothing is going on. When we arrived to Java new driver picked me up and we went to pick up other 10 people from hostels in Java to mt Ijen, all good, he was sometimes confused where to pick up people but I can totaly understand it can happen, soon we arrived to Mt Ijen base camp. We got our guide Suki who should be our guide to Mt Ijen, but he didn’t care at all. He was explaing important things about gas masks when some people were in toilet (he knew they were on toilet), he kept saying what is not his responsibilies and soon we start to hike. From the begining he push very very fast tempo, I am in very good shape and I couldn‘t catch them. Imagine hundreds of people climbing same way and your guide starts almost running, me and some other people got totaly lost. Yes of course there is milion people so you know which way you should go, but you could see others guides making sure that they have all of theirs people from their group, taking breaks, taking care of them, but not our guide, he was just running like we are in some race, then we havent seen him for realy long time. We met him only in crater where he pushed us to take picktures with blue flame and than we saw him again on the top of the mountain when he pushed us again to take pictures. During all track we have no idea when to put masks on or not, because we dont have our guide, it was very stresfull. Since I arrived to indonesia I was suprised how awesome and caring these tour guids are, but not this one. I had breakfast inclued- they gave me noodles and chicken, I am vegetarian so I couldn’t eat it, again it can happen, no bad feelings about it. Just info for vegetarian to bring your own food. Overall organisation good, drivers good, Mt Ijen guide and ''ferry lady'' horrible. Mt Ijen is beautiful and everybody should do it one time. Trekking poles cost 25 000/per one, glasess 25 000/ per one, before you start you can use toiletes for 5 000, and buy some tea, coffee, food. Hike is not easy but I would say it is also not so difficult as some people say, if you are used to do hikes no worries. If you are not uses to hike it can be difficult espesialy part when you go down to see blue fire, you can also take ‚‘taxi‘ and they can také you on the top of vulcano.

Amazing trip to Ijen

We really enjoyed our trip to Ijen - it was a once in a lifetime experience. Going with Como Bali Tour from Bali was by far the most efficient and cost effective way to do this. It was very well organised, communication before hand was great. We were picked up from our hotel at 6pm (would recommend this over 7pm as the traffic can be quite bad and we were tight on time getting to our ferry), travelled across to Ijen and trekked from around 2am to see the blue flame and then sunrise over the lake, before travelling back to our hotel (arriving around 4pm the next day). Our guide Goon was brilliant - so knowledgeable and supportive. The other members of the team (drivers etc) were also lovely. I am really glad we went but there were a few things we weren't prepared for (nothing to do with Como Bali Tour group) that I wish I'd know before we went. Anyone with average fitness and a decent pair of shoes will manage the trek fine but its super busy (even in low season) and there are quite a few tourists in ridiculous footwear (including flip-flops) who really struggled with the rocky path particularly descending into the crater. People are prepared to get really close to the flames and its a bit of a bottleneck as the crowds accumulate in the crater, that gets increasingly frenzied as the sun starts to come up and the chance of seeing blue flames diminishes. It feels a bit unsafe at times - you can take measures to mitigate this by bringing a decent pair of trainers and not getting swept up in the rush. Despite all of this we are glad we went and had a totally unique experience.

Awesome driver and guide

The views were amazing, and totally worth the early mornings! Our driver Kadek was awesome and always got us where we needed to be on time and safely! Our guide Hamid at Ijen was super fun and made sure we got to see the fire on time as well as the sunrise!

Magical experience

The tour was well organized for transportation to and from the site. We had a local guide that combined our group with others to go to the blue fire and back but this location is full of mass tourism. The volcano was beautiful and blue fire was spectacular though not a very big area. On the hike back you could see Raung in the distance.

Amazing Ijen Tour

I loved this tour booked with Como Bali. They made everything very easy and efficient. They arranged pick up from my hostel, transportation to Java on the ferry, and transportation to ijen. They also organized everything for coming back to Bali. My guide was very helpful and took fantastic photos of everything. He brought snacks for the top of the hike & showed me the best places to walk so I wouldn’t slip. This hike is very steep so please be aware of that when planning an excursion to Ijen. I felt very happy to have experienced the sulfur mines, blue lake, and blue fire. I absolutely recommended this company.

Superb Experience

Fantastic experience hiking up and down Mount Ijen. The hike up takes about one and a half hours to the crater edge. Descending and ascending the crater take about half an hour each. Hiking boots are recommended as the combination of rocks, gravel and sand make for a slippery experience. We were lucky enough to witness the blue fire, which was otherworldly! Try to time getting out of the crater by sunrise, as this is when the darkness lifts and you’ll get to witness a magnificent display of colours. Logistics-wise, you’ll be taken care of by a number of people until you meet your hiking guide at the foot of the volcano. Pickup and drop-off went really smooth and were handled by Eka, who is timely, professional, and knows his way around town like no other. Above all though he was accommodating along the journey to the harbour and back, and really nice to talk to. Highly recommend asking for him if possible. Last but not least, pack warm clothes as it can get chilly. You’ll warm up once you start hiking.

A MUST when visiting the area!!!

Excellent communication from before, during and after this trip, this is essential as travellers always want to ensure any pre booked trips are in fact pre booked and things would go as planned esp. when overseas in a totally strange country. We lived in Ubud and required pick up and drop off from hotel, our trip to Mt. Ijen was then split into Bali & ferry & Banyuwangi, several locals were involved, including Bali driver, ferry lady, Banyuwangi driver and tour guide, each has offered us sufficient communication and kept us informed along the trip. Very friendly and polite people, esp. our tour guide Henry, he knows his stuff and is an excellent photographer, he is a decent guy also, he has helped Ijen "taxi drivers" whenever possible, he even picked up rubbish along the road and disposed of those accordingly. Trekking to Mt. Ijen is a must when visiting the area! Worth every step, jelly legs and sore knees will be paid off once reaching to the top, breath taking views.

One of the best view I ever see

Incredible trek to do once in your life. Impossible to describe, you have to do it and see it by your eyes. Thanks for the kindness of the guides. Watch out to the travel time if you come from ubud because it a bit far and you will take around 7 hours to go there and 7 hours to come back but the travel really worth it.

This is a must must have tour when in Bali

The tour was exhausting, but worth every second of it, every cent. One of the best tours I've gotten to, I highly recommend this tour, as the blue flame in particular is something unique in the world. However, be advised, as it is a very demanding tour physically, even more so if your physical condition isn't great. Also, be prepared with at least a blouse and a jacket, up there it gets cold and windy. Try to get some good snickers with you, both for the climb and for the descend, they'll make the difference. Our tour guide, Ali, was extremely helpful and went out of his way to show us everything possible, and waited for us when our breath was nowhere to be found. If you have the chance to go with Ali, don't miss it, he really knows his stuff (7 years guide + 10 years mining up there before that). As for the driver from Bali to the ferry, Kadek was also extremely helpful and always ready to help with any break or info or other help we needed. And for everyone's sake, peeps, bring with you a plastic or paper bag so that you don't leave your trash up the mountain.

Everything was very well planned, the guides accompany us from the moment we left the hotel until we returned, excellent people, very friendly and attentive.

Unique Rewarding Experience

This is a challenging but uniquely rewarding experience. The trek is difficult but we had a great guide Safi who helped us. The climb was steep and then entry into the volcano was very rocky and in places slippery- but how rewarding to accomplish this and to see the beautiful blue flames and then the crater lake. There is an option to have a taxi service to the rim of the crater - making this more accessible. The transfer time from Ubud is long, and as there is no sleep the night of the visit I found the return to Ubud particularly tiring, be prepared. The tour company we used didn’t give us much up front information but everything worked out. The driver was on time, and everything flowed from there.

Agony and torment, 10/10 would recommend

TLDR: Dino has the patience of a saint, the volcano is incredible, and if you are not fit take the damn taxi. I simply couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit one of only 2 blue fire volcanoes while I was visiting Bali. Unfortunately I wasn't in the best physical shape by the time I got to Bali due to long COVID, but I was determined to make the climb! Had I known just how gruelling it would be beforehand, I would have taken up one of the taxis at the entrance (900,000 IDR for both ways). Alas the darkness of 2am hid the torment awaiting me and I naively walked right past the taxis calling out to me and began the hike with my (unfairly fit) husband and Dino Lian, our guide. Did Dino explain the hike in detail before we even started the hike? Yes. Am I geographically challenged and had no idea what any of it meant? Also yes. We had to stop for a break many, many times on the way to the summit and both my husband and Dino spurred me on without too many jokes at my expense. Dino, my husband, myself, and my jelly legs successfully made it to the rim of the caldera! Happy days! Dino then reminded us that to get to the blue fire and sulphur mine, we would have to descend into the caldera to the lakes edge. Once again my path forward was hidden by darkness and so I did not know of the further horrors that awaited my legs. The hike up the side of the mountain turned into a scrambling climb for the descent and I absolutely regretted not buying that new pair of Brooks sneakers with superior grip (seriously, it is VERY slippery in places). We eventually made it down to the sulphur mine and were able to witness the absolutely beautiful blue fire. We watched the miners work and bought a little sulphur turtle for 200,000 IDR. The climb back up was the most horrific physical exertion I have ever imposed upon myself and as the sky slowly lightened I was able to finally see the insane climb I had got myself into. By the time I hauled myself Gollum-style back up to the caldera's rim my muscle's muscles were on fire. Dino and my husband both had the gall to not even be out of breath. From there we watched the sun come up and were finally able to see the beautiful scenery around us. Unfortunately we were unable to see the lake clearly due to the amount of volcanic gas that day, however Dino kindly sent us some photos and videos he had previously taken on a clear day. As wise as he is kind, Dino then organised a taxi to get my pathetic bag of bones back down the volcano (400,000 IDR for the down trip). Overall the tour was fantastic, each of the staff were super friendly and professional, and I highly recommend this tour.

Amazing experience

The drivers and tour guide are all super good local people and the view is amazing. We started from 7pm and the tour ended at 4pm the next day. Tiring though but it’s definitely worth it.

Highly recommend! once a life time adventure

I originally booked another Ijen trip on Viator. However it was a fraud and the tour guide didn’t show up. So I changed my schedule the very last minute. The tour coordinator Wayan reached out to me immediately. Since I am the only one in the group who live in Ubud. Wayan managed a driver to pick me up from Ubud, which cost 7 hrs in transportation, and the driver actually waited for me at the Ferry over night to drive me back. The tour guide Sahari at the Ijen is also very helpful! He gave me a hand while I was climbing cuz some segment of the mountains were very rocky & steep. Overall it was worth it! The blue fire volcano was breathtaking, and also the Ijen lake & sunrise were stunning! This is an once a life time adventure! Highly recommend this trip. Tour guide Sahari is the best!! Everyone knows him at the volcano.

Amazing team for amazing trek!

This was a very well organised tour! All the people were the best we could hope for! The guide, the drivers, everyone was so nice, we had the best time. Of course, the Mount Ijen was special but meeting this team made it even more special :) would 100% recommend it!

Amazing experience

Mount Ijen Tour

Our trip to mount Ijen was running smoothly. Nice driver and guide do helpful durung the hike to create. We saw blue fire and sulfur to much gass coming from the ground. The minner with heavy sulfur bringing from the Carter to hike down they are really strong. The tour is amazing beautiful view from the top of Mount Ijen. Amazing experience to ijen crater.

It was amazing experience climbing ijen volcano. We never expected it before about the views there. 3 hours walking from parking area to the summit with a good guide never felt so bored and good timming. Overall about this trip to ijen volcano is perfect. good team, Very highly recommended..!!

incredible experience

Just back from this crazy experience in Java. We visited the mount Ijen , that is an active volcano , famous for the Blue Fire . And we went inside the crater just few meter from this amazing phenomenon until the miner with the yellow sulphur (you will see also the local workers in action ) And of course from the top the view it’s awesome !! Solo traveler - highly recommend

As a solo traveler, the tour was amazing. 100% recommend people to join. As it is pretty difficult for a solo traveler to book a one person to ijen from Bali, but wayan was friendly, helpful, very easy to communicate and flexible, and managed to find another person to join as well. We had an amazing time and some unforgettable memories. Our guide Hassan was really great, caring and we felt safe all the way. 5 stars! Thanks wayan and the team again :)

organization not great but fantastic driver

if you are a couple of young girls wearing short shorts you will get the attention of Wayan and Andrew otherwise good luck. It was only when we noticed that Andrew and the girls were getting into the car to leave the mountain area that we asked if we were supposed to leave too. Andrew had us in another car without a guide to the ferry. Our driver bought our tickets and pointed to the ferry we were to get on. Then he left. As we practically ran to the ferry it pulled away. If we weren't very seasoned travelers we would have been completely lost. Our guide up the volcano was so out of shape that i offered to get him a taxi to the top so that we didn't have to keep waiting for him to rest. Our driver to and from the ferry was fantastic. He was young but easily navigated through dense fog on the winding mountain road through the night. He spoke English and was very thoughtful and accommodating.

Volcano Ijen

This was a great experience, you can’t miss volcano Ijen if you’re in Bali! I was picked up from my hotel in canggu and dropped back there again after, it was very easy :) The drivers and tour guide were all friendly, polite, and helpful. The views at the top of the volcano for sunrise were just stunning, worth trekking through the night for!! You’ll definitely want time to rest after. Thansk Wayan!

Beautiful Tour

This tour was very well organized, we managed everything on time. It was a nice trek to the top of Ijen and down to the crater. We saw the amazing blue fire and had a beautiful view of the crater sea. After the exhausting trekking we had a nice breakfast before we headed back to Bali. Wayan and all the guides were really nice and helpful. Thank you :D

Wayan is the man! He totally customised our trip for us on the way home and the restaurants we had our meals were great.

One Morning at the Ijen

My girlfriend and I booked a tour through a Guide from our homestay, so we didn’t really know what to expect. From the beginning till the end it was well planned and organized. We’ve met Wayan, Tauwan and Danny, all in all just very friendly and nice guys you can talk a lot to. We had so much fun and got a lot of insights to Bali and Java, too. We can highly recommend especially because of how well everything worked!

Das war mit Abstand die beste Tour, die ich je gemacht habe! Abgesehen von den unvergesslichen Erlebnissen und Momenten, die ich mein ganzes Leben nicht vergessen werden, muss ich ein großes Lob an die Organisation dieser Tour aussprechen. Alles hat reibungslos funktioniert und sowohl der Transport als auch die Tour an sich wurde von super netten und herzlichen Menschen durchgeführt! Es hat sich zu 100% gelohnt und ich kann diese Tour wirklich jedem nur wärmstens empfehlen.

Adventurous and beautiful

Unfortunately it rained, but the bluefire was very impressive. It can also get cold and wet sometimes.

Une expérience éprouvante pour les non sportifs mais qui vaut le coup!!!!!

Très beau lever de soleil sur le lac d’acide et les flammes bleues sont très belles bien que nous n’ayons pas eu la chance d’en voir beaucoup. Vous aurez un masque à gaz mais à noter que les vapeurs de soufre piquent un peu les yeux si vous êtes très près. Attention à ceux qui ne sont pas habitués aux randonnées avec dénivelé, ça monte pas mal. Et après il faut descendre dans le cratère sur des cailloux. Notre guide était très patient et me tenait la main pour m’aider à avancer, avec mon sens très relatif de l’équilibre. Il nous a également pris en photos mon mari et moi. Il était vraiment adorable. Nous lui souhaitons un bon rétablissement (rien de trop grave au final, mais il a failli tomber). Pas d’inquiétude, les guides font très attention aux personnes qu’ils accompagnent, cette nuit-là, aucun touriste n’a eu le moindre souci. Pour ceux qui se demandent, comment on peut ne pas s’ennuyer entre une entrée sur le site à 2h du matin et un lever de soleil entre 6 et 7h: les photos, évidemment, mais surtout le trajet! Nous ne regrettons pas (malgré les courbatures^^). Toute l’équipe était sympathique: nos 2 chauffeurs, celui de Bali et celui de Java ainsi que la personne qui nous a aidé à prendre le ferry. Le trajet est long depuis Bali, il faut profiter des transports pour se reposer et récupérer.

disappointing. no blue light.

no guarantee of seeing the blue light. We only found out about it once we got to the top. the climb is not worth it even for a sunrise. go and climb Mount Batur instead, it's lower but the scenery was better (with the view of Mount Agung next to the sunrise) and the vapors from the volcano are more natural. I took so few photos because it was so disappointing.

完美的旅程

非常累，但绝对值得去。8月是适合去爬火山的季节，风不大天气也没有很冷，结果租的外套和手套都没有用上。 我们的司机非常可爱，感觉和朋友一样，给我们介绍的登山向导特别特别好，下火山口的时候牵着手一步步带我们下的。 下火山口的那一小时路非常困难，但最终我们还是看到了蓝色火焰，并且在火山包围下抽了根烟，很满足。 上下山如果爬不动可以叫车夫，感觉下山坐车体验很好，不伤膝盖还很好玩，但火山口的路只能自己爬哟，最好选择防滑的鞋子。
