Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Sound of Music

What a Delightful Show!

After touring Sound of Music sites for several days, we booked this show for our last night in Salzburg. Such a creative and artistic production. Delightful, humorous moments throughout the show. At the end, we got a chance to see the Puppeteers and watch them demonstrate how they actually operate the marionettes. What a talented group! Absolutely loved the show!

The artistry is mind-blowing!

They somehow retained the integrity of this musical, eventhough it is pared down from the original. The serious material was still all there, mixed in with all the joyful moments most keep in their hearts when thinking of SoM. First and foremost though, the artistry blew my mind, and the curtain call literally took my breath away. I was also fascinated how they staged certain songs that just require someone to "act". They managed to pull it off finding ingenious moments, without it becoming suddenly a parody of the original piece. Incredible! ...coming from a New Yorker who sees Broadway shows all of the time.

An enjoyable rendition of the Sound of Music. The puppeteers skill is amazing. If you are a devoted fan of SOM, don't miss this marionette show!

Take time to look at the exhibit in the entry and hallways. The history of this marionette theater is fascinating.

Delightful experience

What an absolutely delightful, one-of-a-kind experience. The mixture of actual people in perspective with the marionettes of different sizes and depths on the stage created such an interesting show. I especially loved seeing the people at the top of the stage, and how they worked together to make it happen.

Great Production

I am a Sound of Music fanatic. This show does not disappoint. Very well done, with enough of its own spin to really surprise a person. Highly recommend!

It was a wonderful experience.

It was a wonderful experience. The movements of the puppets and the music went well together, so I was able to immerse myself in the puppet show. It was a beautiful and happy time. In particular, the appearance of the last puppet actors was impressive itself.

Great experience, easily arranged.

Return visit after fifty years. Hasn’t lost its magic. A must-do when visiting Salzburg. Fun evening.

Brought back lots of memories x

Amazing! One mark off only because a family brought in their baby and they stayed throughout the first half of the performance even while it cried! Very inconsiderate! They must have been asked to leave at half time as we had a blissful 2nd half. Perhaps the staff could stop them from entering next time?

Better than expected. Would suggest better enforcement of people who use flash cameras during the performance

Magnificent

Such an entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Quite unique and a dying art. The puppeteers are very skilled and talented. Such a unique experience, totally different than the usual play, musical or concert. As middle aged adults, felt like a kid again. Curtain call was amazing, just as good as the actual performance. The curtain was raised so you could applaud the actual puppeteers. In addition, they performed, giving you the opportunity to see the behind the scenes look at how the puppets work. The Sound of Music is in English, however there are subtitles on the side walls with several different languages. There is not a subtitle for everything though. It is a smaller venue, so you may want to book your tickets in advance. Although the stage is small, we did not have any problems viewing the show sitting midway back. There was an intermission. During intermission, drinks and snacks were available to purchase. The theater was decorated with all sorts of puppets and costumes. It was interesting to look at all the history of the theater. They even have a puppet you can try out yourself. Wonderful, unique experience! Dying art that needs to be appreciated! Fun for all ages! Highly recommend!

Wonderful family experience

We went to this as average SOM fans thinking it would be a nice way to give the kids something they'd enjoy on our trip. Where we thought this would just be an interesting experience, this was well worth it! The show is truly amazing to realize that those are puppets and people are up top making them work. The music is recorded, but that's not the point of this - its the puppets. Just a wonderful show!

Wonderful

I saw The Sound Of Music and it was a wonderful show. Such a rare experience to see a full marionette performance by a very talented group of performers in a lovely old theatre.

A fresh take on a classic

As it was our third visit to Salzburg, we really didn’t want to miss out on experiencing this UNESCO World Heritage event again. Though Motzart’s Magic Flute is the quintessential choice, as big Sound of Music fans, we thought this would be a fun and fresh take on the classic. We were blown away by how well and creatively the screen came to stage. The marionettes were amazing and the sets were beautiful but what really stole the show was the final act, when they raise the curtain just a bit higher and show the mastery behind the marionettes. My 10 and 13 year olds loved it. It truly is a spectacular, Salzburgian experience.

Good experience

It is an interesting performance, I know why it is a historical drama, the sound of music is one of the attractive to visit Austria, I found that I love Austria so much!

Sound of music Salzburg marionettes

An excellent show. The marionettes are amazing. Initially, you notice the strings, but after a few minutes you don’t see them. The sound is good and the scenery and props are also excellent. It’s sung in English, but there is translation in several languages projected on the side walls. I am hoping to visit again next year.

Not just for children

As I had never seen the film but had seen the sights it was only fitting my last night in Salzburg should be spent watching the Sound of Music. The theatre is small and my ticket was row 12, I would say pay a little more to get closer. I was totally absorbed in the story, the puppeteers are just brilliant. Perfect end to my trip.

Absolutely wonderful. A must do.

I was fortunate enough that on my two day trip to Salzburg 'The Sound of Music' was playing on one of the evenings. From start to finish the show was absolutely wonderful and the skill involved was amazing with so many puppets on the stage at once. The show is in English with subtitles in other languages that are put on the wall which give a description of what is happening in each scene. I was seated in Row 2 which gave a perfect view of the stage, however if you need to see the subtitles then you would need to sit further back. This is a wonderful experience that I would recommend to any Sound of Music fan whilst in Salzburg.

Excellent puppet musical - staff not so friendly

The Marionetten Theater was excellent, a tour de force of puppetry through the almost entire Sound of Music story. Good visibility, comfortable seats, and and incredibly talented puppeteers. Unfortunately, the people at the entry made a big fuss about a very small backpack that was being carried as a purse. Much larger purses were allowed in without any issue, but the backpack format seemed to trigger them. That and the 1 Euro that was charged for checking (tickets were in the 40 Euro range).

Totally entertaining -- a must-do!

We attended an evening performance. Frankly my wife is the "Sound of Music" fan so I was humoring her. To my surprise, this was very entertaining and I was awed by the skill of the puppeteers. It's spoken in English with subtitles in various languages. It's a very nice theater with friendly staff. Be ready with your camera as the end when the artists are revealed...

Souvenir d’enfance !

Comédie musicale connue de tous . Mais combien ils l’ont bien adaptée . Les moments forts du films y sont représentés. La qualité visuelle des Marionnettes est merveilleuse. L’agilité des marionnettistes est notable . Pour une courte période de temps on retrouve notre cœur d’enfant en écoutant toutes ses mélodies qui ont habitée notre jeunesse. Un moment à ne pas manquer. Le décor de la salle est digne des plus belles salles classiques , décor d’époque ,WoW

Me ha gustado muchísimo. Ha sido una estupenda experiencia. Una verdadera obra de arte en el más completo sentido de la palabra. Llena de sensibilidad y más estría técnica. No se pueden perder los espectáculos de tan gran categoria

Theaterbesuch mit sechs Enkeln und deren Eltern

Auch meine Frau konnte an der Vorstellung teilmehmen, obwohl sie nur sehr schwer über Stiegen gehen kann (sie wurde vom Personal im Sessel getragen - wie einst der Kaiser). Vielen Dank dafür; allein das war eine eigene Vorstellung, und die Zauberflöte danach war quasi der (ausgezeichnete) Drüberstreuer.
