A fascinating place

The easiest way to see Age of the Dinosaurs if you don't have a car. The tour includes the museum as well as the laboratory where people are processing the fossils.

Fantastic tour, Vicki was lovely and very knowledgeable. She went out of her way to make the experience very enjoyable. Vicky also made the journey to the dinosaurs an experience in its own right, pointing out wildlife and giving a lot of local information along the way. I highly recommend this tour company. To start with our guide for the day Bec with Red dirt tours and as we were the only couple aboard we had her to ourselves. ....so knowledgeable. So much to see

We had no idea what to expect. The tour guides were excellent. We did the three tours ending in the cinema. The day was very long.

Wonderful Dinosaurs and sunset with great guides.

This was day two of our three days and we had Bec as our tour guide. We loved the way we were VIP at the dinosaurs for all parts of the Age of Dinosaurs tour. That evening we went on the Rangelands sunset tour and got some fantastic photos of the sunset.

Fabulous experience

We had not idea what to expect but it was an amazing tour. Dana, our guide and bus driver, was really well informed and gave a wonderful commentary as we travelled. She was also on hand for anything else during the tour. I can thoroughly recommend this half day tour.

To see actual footprints of the dinosaurs. To see volunteers working with remains and trying to piece together prehistoric history of Australia.

Dinosaurs in our backyard

Great experience and one not to be missed. We did a half day tour with Red Dirt Tours and were amazed at the whole connectedness of the dinosaur age in the Wilton area. We saw actual dinosaur bone s that were discovered in the Winton area……..wow……To think dinosaurs walked the earth in Australia is truly mind boggling. Truly a fantastic display.

Very enjoyable experience

The display’s especially around the walkway, the views were amazing. Timing for each tour was spot on, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and helpful. All in all a great morning

What an honour to be in the presents for a short visit of these old bones from bygone year. Fascinating experience, the guide gave us. Dinosaur Tour.

We loved it all, but particularly the March of the Dinosaurs. To actually see proof that they walked on this earth. Quite amazing!

Was a great experience

Both The Age of Dinosaurs & Lark Quarry are well worth the visit. BUT, Book directly through through them. Trip advisor tried to stung me $450 for my family of 6 where as booking direct cost me $260 for the 6 of us. beware.

An authentic experience, well organised with informative guides.

From collection point to return, our friendly guide made this an enjoyable experience. We had visited Age of Dinosaurs before and the new section was a real bonus. The whole complex is a credit to everyone who has worked to develop it. The buildings are sympathetically designed, featuring great architecture. The opportunity to get up close and personal with dinosaur bones, watch the unwrapping and recovery process and view the recreation of the dinosaur stampede is not to be missed. The enthusiasm of the volunteers and staff is inspiring. A must see for everyone.

A great way to visit Winton’s major sites

Our Railway Adventures tour group enjoyed 2 trips with Red Dirt Tours. Dana took us to the Age of Dinosaurs Museum, providing informative commentary along the way. The next day Vicki took us to the Dinosaur Stampede while offering a detailed account of the area’s history and features. A huge bonus was a helicopter flight with Vicki’s husband Hilton, an experienced local pilot. Red Dirt Tours is a friendly, well-organised company which proudly showcases the Winton area. Highly recommended!

Touring dinosaur country.

Spent 7 days with Vicki touring around Richmond, Hughenden, Charters Towers and Winton. The tours were extremely professional and I am still overawed by the depth and breadth of Vicki’s local knowledge. I can’t recommend her highly enough. You will have a wonderful time.

Red Dirt Tours Winton - the best tour company and tour guide

Hi tour operator and guide, Vicki the best tour guide we have met for a long time. Excellent communicator, interpersonal skills, and networking skills. Whilst driving Vicki gave us informal chats and info on Winton, surroundings and brief info on Dinosaur foot prints and how the the area first became famous for Dinosaurs. Because of floods recently, our road tours were cancelled. Vicki gave us option to have a helicopter trip with husband Hilton. I am frightened with heights but agreed to go for my husband's sake. Hilton was the best pilot, he did not do tricks in the air to frighten me etc. He was calm and professional. We had a fascinating trip to Dinosaur Stampede, because roads flooded ourselves and 1 other lady were the only ones at the Stampede. Hilton waited patiently while we had our tour and even a coffee with muffins before giving us a very scenic tour back to Winton. When roads were passible Vicki did a special tour for 3 of us to see the Age of the Dinosaurs in her wonderful tour bus. Vicki even organised for us to detour to take suitcases to the air airport, AND she scheduled our tour to ensure we arrived at the Winton airport to catch the only flight out to Longreach for the next couple of days. You must do your tours with Red Dirt Tours

A Day with the dinosaurs

The Age of the Dinosaurs was an amazing experience. The long drive from the east coast was well worth it. My family of 4 two boys aged 9 and 11 had a blast! We did the Ultimate guided tour, which took 4 hours and the tour guides were very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. So much so that my husband who was not really interested became very engaged and can not speak highly enough of the place. This site is a non profit organisation and has some amazing volunteers. We will definitely be back as the observatory wasn’t open yet. 10/10 and you must add this to your list!

Dinosaur Experience

Experiencing the dinosaurs was on our to do list for many years. It did not disappoint. Red Dirt Tours is a great way to go and visit the Age of Dinosaurs. Being picked up from the Main Street of Winton and chauffeured out to the attraction makes for a relaxed drive and to site see along the way. Thanks to Jamie our host who was very informative & friendly.

Amazing

Omg this has to be must on anyone travelling to or through to Winton. This would have to be the highlight of our outback adventure. It’s absolutely amazing and well worth a visit, cafe in magical spot over looking the jump up. The guides are amazing and very educational. This place should be on anyone’s must do list

Educational and amazing

There is so much to see at the Age of Dinosaurs Museum. To see dinosaur bones in reality was amazing as was the sauropod track site. The staff and volunteers are very passionate.

Possibly the best tourist attraction in Australia. Excellent educative well organised informative interesting and fun. Guides were knowledgeable, passionate and kept it fun and interesting. All staff were friendly, the whole process moved smoothly, it was never too congested, no waiting, all ran to time. The buildings themselves were brilliantly designed to meld with the environment. The outdoor installations/sculptures scattered throughout the walk were so well designed and interesting. So fascinating to see actual fossils and footprints dating back 95 million years! Absolutely jaw dropping. Multiple photo opportunities including activities fir children. Looking forward to the opening of the night sky observatory, will definitely make the effort to return especially for that. This is a brilliant, must do activity, worth every single cent and more. Cannot praise this project enough. Thank goodness the station owner noticed that first bone and followed through and pushed this venture until Govts kicked in. Well done to all involved including the volunteers.

Walking with dinosaurs

Good value for money with three distinct tour section: dinosaur lab, collections and outdoor galleries. Really well done with professional and well informed guides. The landscape is amazing and lived walking through the scrub to the lab. Good mix of displays, touch specimens and access to information.

Fabulous experience

Vicky is an amazing tour guide. She has lots of great information about the town of Winton, as well as the local flora and fauna. We did 3 tours with Vicky and doing a Red Dirt Tour is a really great way to see Winton and let someone else do the driving. We learnt so much about the area by joining Vicky's tour. The Age of the Dinosaur museum was truly fascinating. These guys are doing a truly amazing job for the Aussie dinosaurs. Tasty morning tea was provided as well. There are amazing views of the Winton area from on top of the 'jump-up'. Definitely a must do in Winton

A must do in Winton!

We had booked our tour a few weeks out due to Rona. The tour was excellent. We visited the Fossil and Lab room first where you see volunteers working on the fossils. You can stop and have a chat with any of them and they are more than happy to explain what they do. Our guide, Jackie was very informative on how they excavate and preserve the fossils. The next part of the tour is a cinematic experience and talk where you get to meet Banjo and Matilda! The final part of the tour is a ride out to the Dinosaur canyon where you see Dinosaur fossil footprints, then the new March of the Titanosaurs exhibition and a walk through the remaining exhibits. Every exhibit is extremely well presented and interesting. Let your imagination run free and picture these Dinosaurs roaming this land 95 million years ago! You will not be disappointed.

Wonderful!

We booked a morning tour and visited the “Fossil Preparation Lab” first, which was most interesting actually seeing volunteers preparing dinosaur remains for display and research. The “Collection Room” was our next stop where we saw the actual “Banjo & Matilda” remains. Absolutely fascinating! Our third stop was the “Dinosaur Canyon Tour” where we climbed aboard the Express Shuttle which took us out to the canyon where we walked through the four biodiversity areas. Once again this was most interesting. The morning was very well organised with all tours running to a time schedule which maintained the feel of not over-crowding. Our only regret was that we visited a week too early, as the other two large exhibits were planned to open in 5 days. We will return to see these as they looked amazing when we passed. Well worth a visit!!

Excellent

Because we were in Winton without ground transport, we booked two tours with Red Dirt Tours. Day 1: the full day tour to the dinosaur fossil stampede and Carrisbrooke Station. Day 2: the half day tour to the Age of Dinosaurs Museum. We were so impressed with these that we immediately booked another half day tour, to Bladensburg National Park. Jamie, our guide on all three tours, was a welcoming, considerate and courteous host. He had extensive knowledge of the area and the information he shared kept us interested and entertained for the entire tour. He is also a very good “spotter” of wildlife and showed us plenty of the locals. The country we drove through is spectacular, the views from the top of the hills are truly Banjo Patterson’s “vision splendid” and are stunning. Morning/afternoon teas offered a variety of cold and hot drinks with fruit and sweet treats. Lunch on the full day tour was a delicious salad. Jamie is a very competent driver on gravel roads and on the steep dirt tracks of Carrisbrooke and the national park. The all wheel drive vehicle, fitted out to carry seventeen people, is well suited to the road conditions which are often bumpy. Seat spacing is economy, not business, but the stops are frequent so legs are stretched. We two travellers, 70+ and arthritic, had no problems after two consecutive days in the back seat which is probably the bumpiest of the bus. Should you have concerns, ask about the seats in the cabin next to the driver. Thank you, Vicki at Red Dirt Tours, and Jamie, our guide, for a memorable experience. You are an asset to Winton.

All things Dinosaur!!

The tour is divided into three parts. Part 1 - the Laboratory. Interesting to see the people working on the bones. Part 2 - The Cinema. Short film. Part 3 - Tram ride to displays. Interesting if you are interested in dinosaurs. If not, the view from the museum is amazing. Worth a visit just for the view.

A wonderful experience made possible by Vicki and Hylton who arranged special tours for four wide eyed travellers on their first trip to the area. Their local knowledge added to the wow factor of two days of unforgettable memories. So glad to have spent the majority of our time in Winton after our Spirit of the Outback train trip.

Amazing

A really worthwhile tour. Make sure you include a tour of the laboratory where you get right up close to actual dinosaur bones. Vicki at Red Dirt Tours was great. From before I arrived to dropping me back at my hotel. This alone made the trip worthwhile, even in the heat of summer.

We enjoyed our four nights at Winton staying in the very comfortable Outback Motel. We were fortunate to have Vicki and Luke as our Red Dirt Tour guides, benefiting from their intensive local knowledge and their enthusiasm for the area and their guests. My favourite day was the visit to the Age of Dinosaurs and the new Dinosaur Canyon. We were amazed to see the bones of the recently announced discovery of the first flying lizard from 95 million years ago and loved the commentary of the star-struck guide in the fossil preparation area.We recommend these tours highly
