2-Hour Surf Lesson in Montezuma

First time surf lesson

Took a two hour surf lesson in Montezuma. I went with Jairo and another solo traveler to Playa Grande, which is a very large secluded beach. Surfboards were provided, along with rash shirts and a much needed snack. I was able to catch some waves which was great for it being my first time. What a great experience! I highly recommend this for anyone else looking to surf whilst in Montezuma!

Best experience in Montezuma

Nego and crew gave us one of the best experiences and was a focal point for our entire trip! From instruction to the setting to the overall vibe one or a whole series of lessons at Playa Grande (or beyond) with Surf School by the Wave will almost certainly be a highlight of your time in Montezuma no matter what your surfing level, including absolute beginner to expert. Nego is an incredible surfer, detail-oriented instructor, and absolute wonderful guy, and his crew were also outstanding. I cannot recommend them enough.

The must go place for surf lessons

If you’re looking for the perfect place to learn how to surf, I can’t recommend this spot enough! The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. We went as a group of four, and the beach where we trained was absolutely stunning—a true hidden gem. The drive to Montezuma was well worth it for this experience. If you’re considering surf lessons, this is the place to go!

Money well spent!

Jairo was an excellent instructor. Explained everything really well for my 1st time & it was a treat to work with him. He payed attention to things I need to work on so in the future I’ll have a good starting point. He also knew a lot about the area & animals so it was fun to learn a bit more about that stuff too.

Excellent surf lessons!

Great lessons, from beginner to intermediate they can help with all skill levels. Great instructors, great experience and beautiful spot on the beach. Highly recommended!

Best team for beginners surfing!

We had the best time learning to surf with the guys. We had only surfed once so was a bit nervous but they made us feel so comfortable and safe! They made it super enjoyable and I was able to ride lots of waves thanks to them. Also gave us some lovely fruits and the walk there was an experience too as all of the wildlife you see! I would 100% recommend if you want a local, chilled and enjoyable surf experience on a beautiful quiet beach! Thanks so much guys!

Best experience so far

I had an amazing day. Jairo showed me things with lots of patience and I made a lot of progress during the lesson. Most fun I've ever had surfing! The place and the short hike are absolutely magical too. I can highly recommend this experience!

Unforgettable

I had my second lesson ever in this magical setting in Montezuma! Fillipo the instructor had great teaching skills and was super friendly. He adapted the lesson to my level and wishes. We had a break with fruit. Surf School by the Wave have great boards, especially for beginners. They were quick to respond and keen to help me and organize a lesson upon request. Overall an unforgettable experience and very pro!

Perfect for learning

I went surfing for the first time and the beach playa grande in Montezuma is perfect for beginners. The waves are not high, the water not to deep, i was able to stand up on my first try. Jairo the surf teacher was very nice and a good coach. In the break I got some fruits and we could see some monkeys in the trees.

Great experience with supportive knowledge instructors!

Beautiful quiet beach and the most patient instructors ever made for the perfect opportunity to try out surfing. Excellent presurf lessons with loads of practice to build the skill for beginners. Enough instructors for keeping small groups of people busy practicing! Enthusiasm abounds when a surfing challenge is overcome. I was amazed when I got up several times with great coaching and feedback to make it a safe and wonderful experience!

Jairo and Nego were excellent instructors and we had a lot of fun! The beach was quiet and beautiful. Highly recommended

My first time trying surfing

It was my first time trying surfing. These guys were great guides also they were great at explaining the theory. The location was good for both beginners and for more advanced surfing. After the first part of the lession we were given fruits to snack on, but had to be careful so that the monkeys dont steal them away. Luckily we had a cute guard dog that was used to chasing away the monkeys! :))))) I really enjoyed my time at Montezuma and im hoping to return back soon :)

Awesome surfing lesson with a great instructor!

My two teenagers and I had an awesome experience, and really enjoyed our lesson with our instructor Jairo. He was knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. It was their first time surfing, and both my kids were able to get up on their boards - seeing that made the whole lesson absolutely worth it! I highly recommend!

The best surf school in Montezuma

Dont think about it and just book it, this is the best surf school in Montezuma and the instructors are so fun and positive and you get a real local experience walking to the secluded beach. Its truly a one of a kind experience

EPIC Surf Day!

I had my BEST surf day with Surf School by the wave! Nego was an incredible teacher and I ended up carving for the first time not once but THREE TIMES on one wave 🏄‍♀️ The surf spot was epic but had some rocks and my poor Canadian feet were struggling so Nego pulled me out like a beached seal on my board which was so nice! He was also really accommodating and allowed me to book it so that we were surfing during the solar eclipse which was so amazing!! The vibes were immaculate and the snacks after refuelled me after one if my favourite days in the ocean 🌊 Thanks Nego and surf school by the wave!!!

Perfect surfing day

Excellent day ! We went to a beautiful beach with no one there (just be aware of the 30mns walk) Everyone stands up on the board Lot of fun Staff was really great and friendly Highly recommended

We took surfing lessons with Nego on our family trip through Costa Rica and it was perfect! It was our very first time, but with good explanation, practice on sand and then help in the water - everybody was catching waves at the end 🏄🏽‍♀️ And we fell in love with this sport and have already gone surfing a few more times back in Europe 🤙🏼 Awesome vibes, good teacher and amazing spot - thank you for this experience!

The surf lessons at Surf School By the Wave in Montezuma are top-notch. Nego knows his stuff and breaks it down so even newbies like me can catch a wave. It's a laid-back vibe, and you'll be stoked you gave it a shot. 🏄‍♂️🤙

Best surfing lessons!

I go there often and i can say my best surf lessons were with surf school by the wave! Nego is an excellent teacher, very knowledgeable and attentive!!

We went to Costa Rica in the summer of 2022 and we still have good memories to the lessen we had. We are a family of 5 and our young children, 5, 7 and 10 at the time, got a very good instruction. Our daughter of 5 got a private lesson from Nego whilst the rest of us received lessons from the other instructors. If we could give more then 5 stars we would do so! Nego and team, thanks!!

Fantastic surf lessons

I had a little bit of experience before getting lessons with Surf School By The Wave, but in the end of my 6 surf lessons I had improved a lot. The instructors were very good and made me feel safe all the time and they pushed me in a positive way so I improved more than I thought I would. So if you ever come to Montezuma and consider taking a surf lesson I really recommend Surf School By The Wave.

Going from no experience to Riding Waves😎🌊

I had such a great experience with this school!! Because I knew I would be here for a few weeks I got a package of six classes. The class starts with a beautiful, beachside walk to Playa Grande, a safe spot for beginner surfers. The instructor was friendly, informative and super patient while always being encouraging. I felt safe and in good hands the entire time! Would highly recommend!!

Great experience and teaching

Super cool experience and great teacher, we were beginners but managed to ride several waves by our selves. 2h was enough time for our first try. (They even managed to provide excellent child care for our baby on the beach:)

Great surf lesson!

Best experience and teens loves it! Whole family did! Great teachers, patient, easy going. Also cut up pineapple and coconut!! So delicious and cool experience! The lesson was perfect amount of time, mostly in water. Instruction was well done! Walk through trail was beautiful crossing many beaches…you will sweat..it’s 30-45 minutes (teens vs adults) but no other way to get to isolated beach. Wear shoes for the walk…water shoes or tevas good, not flip flops. Although magically instructors walked barefoot while way! They were great. Also dealing with company in advance was super easy, timely, and very professional.

First time surfing was in Montezuma

Unlike Santa Teresa, Montezuma is more of a quite surf city with more relaxing vibes which I preferred. Our instructor, Jairo, was great. He met us at the Super in town and we had to walk 25 minutes to Playa Grande (where the waves are small and do able for beginners). Only option is to walk there as it is a nature reserve filled with animals so be prepared for a sandy/rocky trail. Once at the beach we grabbed our boards and started the lesson with on ground safety training. The actual surfing was difficult but fun, you go shoulder deep into the water, hop on the board and Jairo turns you when the wave comes and tells you when to stand. It's quite tiring when you keep falling off and getting back on, but he provided a pineapple as a snack and was encouraging. Only thing is that we werent allowed to bring our phones on the beach (left at the surf hut nearby) but we totally could have as the beach was almost empty and we wanted more photos and videos of us.

First time surf lesson success story.m

Me and 5 friends (40 y/o women) set out on our first surf lesson with Negó and his crew of surf instructors. After a beautiful 40 min hike we reached our surf spot. Negó was a great instructor and walked us through the process to safely get up in a surf board. The waves were HUGE for me as I come from FL where we rarely have any waves. We had a blast. Half way through we took a break and ate some delicious fresh fruit. We had a blast. 3 of the 6 of us were even able to stand up on the boards. Highly recommend if you’re in the Montezuma area.

Must try!

The lesson was great! These guys work hard to teach you throughout the whole class. It was so fun, definitely something you should try out at least once specially in Costa Rica. Montezuma is a great location and they make sure to take you to a beach where you should be able to do your best. Overall amazing experience would recommend!

Such a great experience! This was my very first surf lesson. Jairo was very pleasant, attentive, and gave great directions. The beach was perfect! Nice, soft sand to fall on and the waves aren’t too big.

Surfing in paradise

Fantastic surfing lesson, I only added myself at the last minute to join my teens & was so glad I did. Jairo had us all standing up right from the start. Very safe & very skilled instructors facilitating us being able to achieve beyond our expectations! Stunning walk to & from Playa Grande & fabulous fresh fruit at the break. Highly recommended.

Great Surf lessons

I would highly recommend Surf by the Wave. We used them a couple of time, and by the end we could all stand up & surf (adult + 12/14 yrs) We were all beginners. The instructors were good, clear explanation & attentive. I completely safe.

A great first experience surfing!

Jairo was amazing! It was fun, he helped me catch a wave and the lesson was safe for beginner! I loved the hiked to the beach and appreciated the tour of the area. A snack was kindly provided. Very nice surf lessons! The instructors are very kind and have good knowledge. There was one instructor for two people, which was perfect! A lot of surfing time for everyone. We can recommend them 100%

Great experience

Amazing experience!!! I learned a lot, ate fresh pineapple, and can’t wait to go back. The waves are fun but safe for beginners and the beach is gorgeous. The instructors are clear, helpful, and funny.

The lesson was very professional with a good safety briefing to start off, clear and understandable instructions, good exercises and after all patience and valuable feedback that helped us to finally get on the board. We enjoyed it very much! Highly recommended!

Intermediate Private Lessons with Nego

I booked several private intermediate surflessons with Nego and can‘t recommend it enough. The lessons were super professional and I improved a lot with my surfing skills during these days. Nego helped me to gain more self confidence in the water and was always patient, helpful and super friendly. Hopefully I am back soon to take more lessons with him - thank you so much Nego!

Great fun for all skill levels

We had a great time with this surf school. Nego is an excellent coach and will give you great instructions to take your surfing skills to the next level. All skill levels can learn something from him and he'll also be happy to share his knowledge about the stunning beaches around Montezuma with you. The provided boards and shirts are also of a good quality and a fruit snack will give you a welcome boost of energy during the session. I strongly recommend Nego and his surf school.

Best teachers by far

This formed our best memories of Costa Rica. Nego and Naira are amazing teachers - the experience of these beaches and their beauty is matched by the clear and concise instruction and careful monitoring of our group. We were up on our boards on the first day and signed on for two more. They are awesome teachers and deeply passionate about surfing, seeding a new lifetime hobby on the waves. Best school by far!

Amazing surf lessons - even for beginners!

Great surf course! Nego was our course instructor. He comes from Montezuma and therefore knows exactly when and where to go surfing. Although we are beginners ourselves, the waves were therefore no problem for us. In between there was a break where he served us fruits and afterwards you can take a shower. We would book a surf course with Nego again at any time!

Best surf lesson ever

Honestly this was the best surf lesson I have ever received. Nego and his team did an amazing job - it’s clear that they are very passionate about surfing and passionate about helping people to learn the right way. Their coaching was very helpful and valuable, and they put a lot of work into helping us learn! The beach was beautiful, with consistent waves. We had a blast and will be back. Go surf with Nego!

Very nice instructors!

The surf instructors were really nice and patient. They not only thaught how to surf but they told us cool things about the nature around and the fruits they gave us were soo delicious. All in all we really enjoyed it!

Perfect lessons!

Nego is an experienced surfer and a talented instructor. After the lessons you are able to stand the first waves. Lucky to learnt from his skills. The way to “his“ surf beach is stunning too with a lot of fauna and flora. All in all it has been perfect lessons and a perfect day!
