Prague Communism and Nuclear Bunker Tour

Well worth your time!

My teenage son selected this tour and while I was unsure about this one, I am so glad I went! A very interesting and informative look into life under Communist rule and a unique opportunity to explore an underground bunker. As others have said, the tour guide's personal history and inights really brought these stories to life and made for a very compelling narrative. He sprinkled in welcome humor and interesting details on an otherwise very heavy topic. I am a bit claustrophobic and the operator included claustrophobia warnings, but this tour posed absolutely no problem for me, there was plenty of space to feel comfortable. If you have time while visiting Prague, this tour offers a somewhat offbeat dive into a specific element of Czechia's history and is well worth your time.

A sobering look back ton a dark time in Czech history

Guide’s first hand review of life under communism was most interesting. I liked being able to handle a hand grenade for the first time ever.

Interesting but very smooth

The tour didn’t get off to a very smooth start as the guide was 40 minutes late. He explained they had had a diary issue and no guide had been allocated to the tour. Fair play to the guide who then came, he had been called up last minute. I guess these mishaps happen and they were very apologetic and they still made sure we all got the full tour. The tour was interesting but the guide I think was a little flustered probably due to the last minute call he got. Some of the explanations could have been more structured - for example he started by explaining ‘this’ without explaining what ‘this’ was. He was though knowledgeable, patient, and passionate. The bunker is a series of underground corridors and you certainly got a sense of what it would have been like if they had ever been used. I thought the group size was quite large considering the tunnels are quite long and narrow meaning you could be a long way from the guide. The bunkers are a tram ride from the meeting point (fare included in your price). Tip: The bunkers are near the TV tower so at the end of the tour you could go to visit the viewpoint there but would then need to make you’re own way back which is easy enough.

Prague Communism and the Nuclear bunker tour.

A truly sobering representation of life in Czechoslovakia under communist rule as well as life after the velvet revolution Our guide, Lada (L) was excellent as he himself had experienced life under the propaganda wielding Soviets and he allowed us to live vicariously through him as he unloaded personal anecdotes. We were taken past the old Czech secret police building and visited the commemorative plaque celebrating the Velvet revolution. We then boarded a tram and happened upon a graffiti laden play area, the outside of the nuclear bunker. Lada took us through the mental disintegration tactics of the Soviets (eerily similar to the Nazis) before taking us through the nuclear bunker. 84 steps down and there it is adorned with authentic communist furniture, photos and similar mementoes of a bygone era. Although the stories are sobering, it’s a necessary reminder of why we can’t accept this type of brainwashing and tyranny in the future. Highly recommended.

Thought provoking

Our tour guide was truly amazing at bringing the communist time alive. Really thought provoking, especially as we were 18 years old, growing up in the UK at the time of the velvet revolution!

Thank you to our guide Stan, your life stories really helped with this experience. It was a brilliant introduction to Prague. A real "I was there" feel that you put across leaving us in no doubt what it was like in the communist days.

Personal Narrative Enlightening

The bunker was historically interesting but we most enjoyed the commentary about the Communist Period from our guide, Ted, who was 18 during the Velvet Revolution. Fascinating and enlightening.

Great tour!

Highly recommend this tour if you want to understand the history of modern Prague. Our guide was highly knowledgeable and very friendly. First half is a short walk around Prague explaining the key dates and events followed by a visit of large nuclear bunker.

Glad I took this tour

Very interesting tour. Hearing the personal experiences made the tour memorable. Our guide Lada was excellent and shared with our group so many artifacts and facts that were very informatuve. I am glad I went.

Depends how much time you have

Enjoyed learning about this part of Prague’s history. If you are short on time in the city, however, I would not use your valuable time on this tour.

The bunker and the guide. The guide was very passionate and knowledgeable regarding communism. We were able to see parts of Prague we’d never see on our own.

Brilliant tour, brilliant guide!

Absolutely outstanding tour with an equally outstanding guide Maki. She was everything you could want out of a guide; friendly, organised, funny and extremely knowledgable. The experience itself was brilliant and featured a well choreographed walk through the roots of communism, the Second World War and the Cold War in Prague. The bunker was brilliant and had lots of interesting artefacts to engage with. At the end of the tour, Maki even helped us back to the centre and gave us directions and restaurent recommendations. Thanks for a brilliant experience Maki!

A great tour well worth the fee.

L (Ladislav?) was informative, friendly and humorous. We greatly enjoyed the tour and learned a lot - both the teen with a special interest and the one who initially wasn’t keen - everyone was glad they went.

Wonderful Tour!!

This tour was a wonderful experience! Maki was an incredible guide - extremely knowledgeable and fun! The bunker itself was so cool to see and the tour does a great job explaining the history involved.

Great tour with a informative tour guide

Brilliant tour, our guide Ladislav was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. Ladislav told us detailed stories and what it was like to grow up in a time when there was a potential threat of nuclear war and told us what life might have been like in the bunker in the event of a war. Ladislav gave us a booklet of photos from the Soviet era and a guide on how to put masks and suits on. 10/10 would recommend and visit again

Preferred Nuclear Bunker Portion

I found the nuclear bunker part of the tour more interesting because the site is preserved in a similar state to what it might have looked like when it was built. The communism part of the tour consisted of a couple sites around the city that were significantly modified and common features of the present day city, so it was hard to realize the historical importance of those places.

Nice informative tour

Guide was cool, good knowledge. Maybe little big out of theme some times, but not too much:) tour was informative. We heared historic facts, saw pictures and walked at punker.

Learned a lot

Maxim was very knowledgeable and passionate about history- he was great. I thought the tour was 30 mins too long. If you have kids, this may not be the best choice.

Informative and interesting

Very interesting, informative and delivered with humour. Pavel was an excellent guide leading us through important moments in history for the Czech Republic. The nuclear bunker was a stark reminder of the past and a terrifying, thought provoking message for the present day!

Time and money well spent

Today so many important lessons from the past are taken for granted. This specific tour was an eye opener and stark wake up call! 2 thumbs up and 5 stars easily!

Great tour - but a bit long

Very interesting to see a nuclear bunker, and the old hazmat suits and gas masks. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the era, and conveyed his deep passion for the subject. A bit too long for those with small children or teens.

Definitly recommend!

This tour was great. The bunker was fascinating, and our guide Pavel did an awesome job making this a fun, informative couple of hours. The location of the bunker is a bit away from the centre, but the tour price includes the tram ticket, and it was a fun trip to an area of Prague I might not otherwise have seen.

A cool and different experience to do in Prague

A pretty cool experience to do while in Prague, learning all about Nazism and communism. You get to go deep underground and learn the systems of the communist days and how they lived in underground bunkers.

Excellent peek into the past

Great tour. Guide didn’t mess around with the realities of what happened under Communism in Eastern Europe. Guide was knowledgeable and English was amazing. Nice to see they preserved some of the Stalin statues torn down in ‘89 and dumping them in the corner of a run-down Soviet-era nuclear bunker does seem like the best place to display them. The tour ended up being longer than the stated 2.5 hours (probably closer to 3.5 hours) and a bathroom break along the way would’ve been nice.

Goofy but cool

This was super fun and a very different kind of tour. Great history and serious topic but some goofy moments with the gas masks!

Excellent tour

Our guide Milo's was excellent. He knew so much about the history of communism in Prague and was actually a child during the time and was able to share not only history but some of his personal stories. He kept us captivated and wanting to hear more. The bunker itself felt a little eerie and cool. So definitely bring a jacket. I would definitely recommend this tour.

Wonderful afternoon

Great tour. And great people providing it!

I am a professor who took his students on this wonderful tour. It is very creatively constructed and shows brilliantly how people can be controlled through fear in an authoritarian society. The students loved it, and it gave them an unforgettable impression of the look and feel of life in a communist society (as well as in a nuclear bunker!) But I need especially to thank Anushka from your ticket office. I arrived late for the tour because of a prior meeting, and she made heroic efforts to enable me to catch up and join the group with my students. It is very impressive when providers work so hard to take care of their customers.

There was quite a bit of...

There was quite a bit of walking before we reached the tram to take us to the bunker. Unfortunately, I have issues with stairs and had to back out of the tour after we climbed up to the bridge to lead us to the bunker. There are many stairs down to the bunker and at this point I gave up. The guide was just average and difficult to hear in the city with all the traffic.

Very interesting to hear the story of Prague and experience the inside of a nuclear bunker. It was certainly chilly inside this place so bring something warm!

Lada our tour guide, was simply fantastic His ability to take you right back to communism in Prague with his fantastic ability to communicate really how it was like what is one and a highlights of our trip to Prague His knowledge and passion was evident throughout the tour, and he is an absolute credit to this tour company We love bike because not only does offer very ancient history but also has very relevant recent history, which ladder was able to eloquently describe to us I would highly recommend anybody who goes to Prague to take this tour

Must-do

It was a very unique tour. I think everyone should have a look inside a nuclear bunker at some point. I found it super informative. I highly recommend it.

Fascinating and insightful.

Katrina was great. Very informative about communism and sharing some of her history from her parents and grandparents who lived it. The walk first around the old town was good and informative, then getting the tram out to the bunker was provided in the ticket price. A short walk from the stop to the nuclear bunker, and then down 15m underground via steps. The museum of photos and equipment, gave you an idea of what it would have been like if, they had actually been used. Thank goodness the people of Prague never had to use it. Would not have been enjoyable down there with thousands of other people. Thanks for a great informative, and humorous at times tour.

Informative and enjoyable

Panel was a most entertaining guide. He was very knowledgeable and managed difficult political issues with great sensitivity. Everyone on the tour enjoyed it and we had plenty of time to explore the bunker.

Good city tour

Our guide Maxim is really passionate when explaining the history of Czech during the communist era. He is very knowledgable about anything related to Prague and Czech as a whole. I have a nice time in the nuclear bunker.

Bottom line? Disappointing

It was great to see the bunker. But it was kind of old and dated in its displays. Particle board shelves, torn netting over things they didn’t want us to see, and creepy child mannequins in the bathroom, did not make me feel as if I was getting my moneys worth. Our guide’s accent was so strong, it was very difficult to understand her and she spoke so fast. I work as an adult ESL teacher so my entire job is deciphering accents. This one was rough. Plus, she would just take off without telling any of us where she was going. If you happened to be chatting and were not watching her intently, you could easily become lost. I would mention her by name but she never told us. I did appreciate her personal stories about growing up under communism. Bunker space was very tight. Needed a much smaller group to be able to see what the guide was referring to. And the guide didn’t give us time to see it when she was done speed talking.

Dont miss this tour and ask for L!

Our Guide whose name starts with L! was brilliant to say the least repeat quite fantastic!. The tour with the various stop and show points to show various cold war and related pictures and sites , culminating in the cold war bunker was worth very $ as it was an eye opener for someone who grew up in a non cold ware zone and was not exposed to the potential horrors of a nuclear war . I cant stress how informative L was as he was an expert on life in the era of the cold war in the Czech and shared these experiences with the tourists albeit with some very sophisticated humor!. Don't miss the tour and ask for L!

Excellent tour highly recommended

Our guide Leid (Sorry if I spelled the name wrong) was excellent. The tour is a real eye opener into the lives of people under communism post WW2 and the ability of a people to battle the odds and create a prosperous cohesive society. The information is given in an engaging way by someone who has lived and suffered through the dark times and can impart the experience to some degree with Czech humour! The bunker is fascinating, and you will question ever going into one in the event of the unthinkable! Thank you. A fantastic glimpse into the window of Czech recent history and a warning to us all about the dangers of power and corruption in our governments.
