Half Day Trip to Kutna Hora and Bone Church from Prague

That's a nope for us.

We really wanted to see the bone church. We booked this tour at the last minute because I liked that it went in the afternoon, giving us the morning in the city. Our guide Sophia was awful. Very difficult to understand, and rambling, confusing facts. Would start on one subject, jump to something else, "but I'll tell you about that later", never returned to the original thought. Absolutely zero enthusiasm and disinterested in engaging her participants in the subject matter, but was insistent that the whole group follow her around and quietly listen to her nonsensical ramblings like we were first graders on a field trip. Literally put me to sleep on the bus with her monotone. We were the youngest couple on the bus (50's) and the others became easily tired. Sophia had no patience for the stragglers, lots of eye rolling and exasperated sighing. She was obviously appalled and fed up by the behavior of others in the various places we went. We went by a store she didn't approve of (Halloween stuff), and she tsk'd and "that's awful"'d her way past it. She shushed people in the bone church. There was a 25 minute stop in the center of town that she acted as though she was doing a favor for us to make. When we got on the bus, our driver got lost on the curvy little streets before we finally made it out. We did not tip her as we left. And we're Americans, we tip everybody!

This was supposed to be a guided tour in English. Our guide’s English was not good. Most people on the trip couldn’t understand what she said. We saw the sights but left with little information on what we saw. She acted like it was a bother to even have to show us around. Very poor experience.

Unique, creepy, and awe inspiring

The bone church is simply astounding. One of, if not the coolest, most interesting, and most unique place I have ever visited. The rest of the stops on the tour are honestly a bit lackluster and not the most interesting, but the bone church more than makes up for it. All around, a pleasant day outside the city with one of the most unique and macabre places you can visit.

Great experience to see the bone church.

Great afternoon out. I have never seen anything like the bone church. It needs to be seen to be believed. After the churches we had an hour or so to look round the village. Found a lovely little cafe and had some great cheap food. Highly recommended.

We were the only two on this trip and so really appreciated the fact that they didn't cancel and went ahead with the tour. Kutna Hora is a must see and our guide was great throughout giving us a good insight into each place visited and enough free time built in to allow us to explore on our own a little further. Really enjoyed this trip, bone church is something unique and quite moving whilst the church of St Barbara and Kutna Hora itself is just lovely to explore.

Great half-day tour

Interesting little half-day tour to visit the bone church and to walk through the little town. The guide-Sofia-was good, and funny, too. Nice to be part of a small group, also. Got a few minutes to shop at the store next to the bone church! Very glad to be able to do that. Nice to get out of the city for an afternoon ant that it's only a half-day tour.

Karolina is a wonderful guide

Karolina was a wonderful guide. Her patriotism and knowledge of the region was communicated through captivating storytelling. It was a relaxing day out.

An amazing excursion with a terrible guide

I'd be better of going to this day trip all by myself. Sure the guide had some knowledge but she wasn't even making an effort to be juuust a bit enthusiastic about it. Her accent was super difficult to understand in nation that everyone speaks good English and in the end she showed us a meeting point from the top of the hill somewhere between the houses and then she said I should have been clearer. No way...it's sad because the place was beautiful

Amazing place for people who like weirdness

Great way to spend a day from Prague. The ossuary at Sedlec is probably not for the faint-hearted, but if you like weird places it must not be missed! Tour with Premiant, taking most of a day.

What an amazing day just the two of us along with our guide and another guide from Chile so sorry can't remember your names, Tony was the driver. We enjoyed an amazing tour and enjoyed chatting with you both over a beer and chianti. Good memories. Thank you

Unique excursion

The trip to Kutna Hora was unique and interesting! We learned a lot from our guide. The town was very quiet on a Monday with most shops closed -but made the locations we visited not busy also. Recommend this excursion!

Great guide, great organisation and amazing baroque ossuary!

Really incredible opportunity to see the ossuary at Kutna Hora and two of the churches key to the region's development. The bone church is stunning and I really liked that photos were not allowed, as it meant everyone moved around the space thoughtfully and fluidly. Our guide, Eva, gave lots of context and information about the mining industry in the area and our lovely driver Ivan got us there and back safe and sound. Amazing day!

Not a Good Guide :(

I hate to say it, but this tour was really terrible. (I went on August 19th) First it wasn’t entirely clear where the exact meeting point was. The address was accurate but it would have been better if there was some signage on the kiosk. A couple of people on the tour were unsure if the exact meeting place. Then, when the bus tour began, unfortunately it was difficult to understand our guide. She was nice enough, but I had trouble understanding her- both the history she was describing and/ or the logistics about timing and where we were going. Multiple fellow travelers and I kept asking her throughout the day—where are we, where are we going next, and how long are we going to be in this location? We never felt like we had a solid answer. More than once I had to ask “what is the name of the building we are in?” Though we were able to stop to use the restroom or get water throughout the tour, it was really by request only and the guide seemed almost irritated when asked about stopping. (That really should have been built into the tour, especially considering the length of the tour and the heat). At one destination, our guide said little at some places and had trouble answering questions. A few “I don’t know” answers were provided. No one needs to know everything but she couldn’t really tell us much more about the bone church other than “it’s all made from bones” . In one church, she did say a lot, but because of the pace, volume and her accent, it was really difficult to follow. I know we went to the bone church, St, Barbara’s cathedral and one more church/cathedral but I couldn’t really tell you much about them even now. At the end of the tour, we had time to explore the town, but the guide had no recommendations (even when asks directly) about where to go or eat and what to do. Finally, her body language made it seem that the wasn’t interested in the information she was sharing. As a result, she did nothing to engage travelers. Again, I hate to be so negative but the experience wasn’t a pleasant one. Having taken many tours around Europe, this did little to educate and/or engage the travelers. I was appreciative of the air conditioned vehicle to get me to the locations, but other than that, it was a waste of money. I honestly think that the participants on my tour deserve a refund. There was a consensus of frustration from all travelers in our group.

Disappointing

Guide was completely unimpressive - low on energy and lack of clarity on what she said. With so much history to the place, having an engaging guide can be a real game changer for the trip, unfortunately it was amiss for many our tour

Awesome Tour

Worth it to see the churches which are different from Prague’s. Old town is quite small and walkable. Knowledgeable and accommodating guide. The Sedlec Ossuary is a must!

Decent Tour Don't eat at the tour guides recommended cafe

Those tour is great in that it takes you to many different cathedrals including the osuarry (bone church) and you are able to compare the different details and architecture in each church. We had Peter as our guide and while he was knowledgeable we did have a major hiccup that made us feel very uncomfortable. He took us to a Cafe that he said he had made reservations at because he knew the owner. We sat at a table that had "reserved" on it and the owner came to take our order. Another waitress came to bring our order without any questions. As we were drinking our lemonade and waiting for our order of fries a man came up to us speaking in German. He was very unfriendly and kept pointing to the reserved sign. He ended up yelling at us and telling us to move our table this table was his. The owner and a waitress were standing there and did nothing. We stood up and the guy kept pointing at a dirty table. There were open tables, but none of them clean. No one came to clean off the tables and it was a very embarrassing situation. Peter had come by our table and never said anything, the waitress never said anything, and the owner never said anything. No one tried to help resolve the situation in the Cafe Peter took is to. I hope other tourists do not make this mistake of eating at this Cafe or that Peter does not take other tourists to this Cafe because apparently this man sits at the same table everyday and we had no idea (how could the staff not know). We were just going off of the reserved table sign and Peter saying he had reserved tables. Needless to say, it did put a bad light on the tour guide himself and this is the reason for the 3 star rating.

How it works

This review is for anyone confused by how many hours the tour will be. On here it states 7 hours but the itinerary only covers 1 hour of activities. So this is exactly how it works: Depart at 13.00 and the drive to Kutna Hora takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. 14.15: At the bone church we had 45 minutes, then we drove to the cathedral which took ten minutes. 15.00: We explored the cathedral and the surroundings for one hour, then were taken to the town centre. 16.00: This was our time to explore the town or go for lunch. We had 1 hour and 15 minutes before we had to return to the mini bus. 17.15: Depart and return to Prague, arrive back at 18.30. So the whole thing is actually 5.5 hours. Which for me was a positive, because then we got to do other things in the evening. Overall we had a great time. The air conditioning alone was worth the money. The tour guide was lovely but I think she should slow down a little. Less information would be better than rushing through what she had to say. But that was the only con.

Half day trip to Kutna Hora

I was specifically looking for a tour which only focused on Sedlic Ossuary and St Barbara’s. This one for the bill and we got so lucky with our guide, Ivana. She shared a lot of Prague history layered into the Kutna Hora history. She really helped us get a sense of the people in Kutna Hora.

An enjoyable experience with a kind, caring thoughtful Guide, Milada. Her knowledge was extensive which she had to impart in two languages, French and English, for the multinational participants.

Truly enjoyable tour!

This was an extremely scenic and interesting tour to Kutna Hora and the ossuary, and we truly enjoyed it. It would have been nice to have a few minutes to get souvenirs after the bone church visit; we didn't realize how far it was from the rest of the tour so didn't ask for that, and in hindsight we should have. Overall though, great tour, our guide was interesting and engaged, and we enjoyed it immensely!

Awesome

Very good tour. The tour guide, Petr was awesome. Knows lots of stories , never rushed us. Good sense of humour as well. Bus was good. As per sights they deserve the time spend on the way. It’s an easy trip, the road doesn’t take so much time and the place is worth it

Architecture and history tour

Amazing tour, we got to see everything on the tour and more. The guide is passionate about architecture from the gothic and barock period. Which makes this tour a must if you are interested in history and architecture. Also nice to see the country side 🙂

Great day trip from Prague

A great simple tour. Or friendly guide found a really good balance of providing interesting information while also leaving time for people to explore a bit on their own. Never felt rushed or stuck in one place waiting for the tour to end.

I did the Kutna Hora half day trip. I loved it. My guide (I think she was Tatiana…if I remember), was fantastic! So much information, fun stories, and overall a great time. The Bone church was worth seeing, but it was small and a bit underwhelming, I much preferred the rest of Kutna Hora. I’m so glad my hotel recommended this tour. Both guide and bus driver were fabulous!!

Wonderful tour! Great driver and a fantastic tour guide! Saw the beautiful Sedlec Ossuary as well as all of the other sights of Kutná Hora. Our guide, made it interesting, as well as educational. Top notch!

Great Sites - Could Have had a Better Guide and Divided the Time at each site better

This was a good tour but I felt too much time was spent at the first cathedral, which was nice but I thought the other sites were more interesting and felt rushed there. The Ossuary is very interesting as is St. Barbara's cathedral (the second cathedral). Guide was okay but we were spoiled having great guides on other tours in Prague.

Informative and Engaging Tour

The tour of the town was informative and engaging! The tour started with the Bone Church, and moved on to the rest of the town. It was interesting to learn more about Kutna Hora and it's history, and the day trip was a nice change of pace from the city of Prague. The church there was beautiful and rivaled many of those in the city itself. Our guide Jan was friendly and knowledgeable – he spoke multiple languages so that everyone in our diverse tour group was able to get the most from his tour through the town, and was patient in answering our questions. I had a lovely time and learned a lot and would recommend this half-day trip to anyone considering it.

Kutna Hora is a peach

Great tour. Bone church truly breath taking and the old city centre of Kutna Hora was lovely. Mikela was an excellent guide. Worth the easy day and a nice trip in the country.

Discover and see an Interesting area near Prague!

Our guide and driver were friendly and enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the area and gladly answered our wide ranging questions about the Czech Republic. The area was rich with silver, making it an important source of wealth... which made it a valuable prize for conquering governments throughout the centuries. The cathedral is striking and has an interesting history. The bone church is unique and makes you reflect on life... we also found a chocolate museum that gladly offered free tastings of numerous flavors of milk and dark chocolate.

Very nice trip outside Prague

We very much enjoyed this half-day trip. The ossuary was weird but interesting and it was nice to see the St Bárbara chuch and the old town. Our guide Elena was very helpful and spoke excellent English. The drive there took only 1hr 15 mins and the bus was modern and comfortable. Nice to get out of the crowded centre of Prague for a bit!

Waste of money and time

It was ok tour just outside Prague. I really don’t recommend it because there’s really nothing to see beside the bone church and the cathedral.

At least one good thing to say about Viator

Great experience, knowledgeable guide , had a lot of fun. At least 1 out of 3 tours bout through Viator was great.

Smooth trip to some unusual sights! (resubmitted to correct spelling)

Pick-up was very punctual, and the tour set off in good time. Diana gave a brief history lesson on the way, and then allowed us all plenty of time to look around. Several members were not very nimble, and she was always understanding that we may be slow. The ossuary church at Sedlec, and St Barbara's are magnificent sights, and her knowledgeable commentary was very helpful.

Great Tour!

Our guide James was very knowledgable about the history of Czech Republic. I enjoyed the church and all of the sites.

If you are in Czech Republic this is definitely a site not to be missed. Our guide was wonderful and gave us so much information. Wonderful side trip from Prague. Such an interesting little village

Pretty good trip

Incredibly knowledgeable guide Anna gave an amazing amount of background knowledge to bring the places to life. Half day was enough for us to see the sites, especially if you have limited time in Prague. Bone chapel is just damn weird, town is small, good for a quick walk around.

Worth the money

Ten minutes at the Bone Chappel is definately not enough time. This visit rushed into an afternoon and you have a very late return to Prague - we only got back at 19h30.

Great half day tour!

Thank you to Vaclav for a great tour! Whilst we selected the half day tour, the tour was well paced. Our main interest was the Ossuary, and whilst you only have a short while at the church, you have time to see everything, ask questions and buy a souvenir quickly. It was lovely to see the town of Kutna Hora and learn it's history! St Barbara's cathedral was like no other! We finished the tour with 40 minutes of free time to look around. Vaclav recommended to try an authentic Italian pizzeria with local beer, which was a terrific recommendation! Highly recommend if you have the time when visiting Prague!

Expected much more

Our guide did not plan properly the time we were there and we had to skip one of the attractions as we ran out of time and had to get back. Also, our mini van was very outdated, squeeky with the bumpy ride. When I booked this trip it said that it will be in English, but it had two different group of people and it had to be in Spanish and English. Felt like the guide did not cover much about that little town.

More to it than the Bone Chapel

We went for the Bone Chapel, which was small but extraordinary. Our guide gave very good background on the way there. The entire town was lovely. We ended up liking St. Barbara's Cathedral even more than the Ossuary. By the way, we had the best pizza of our lives there as well.

Half day tour

We had a lovely afternoon visiting the Bone Chapel and Kutna Hora. Our guide Aris was excellent, he has a vast knowledge of the history of the sights and the region itself, also he was brilliant managing the group which is never an easy job! We started at the fascinating bone chapel, we were explained about the history and then had some time to walk around inside (and also some time to find souvenirs). Then the driver took us to Kutna Hora where we visited the St Barbara’s Church followed by a short stroll down to the Unesco World Heritage village. I wish we had a little longer to explore the village (maybe an extra hour?) but all in all it was a lovely afternoon trip and I can definitely recommend this tour.

Fantastic and passionate

So much information and passion from our wonderful guide. She spoke about the history in such depth. Was an amazing trip!

Makes the most of an afternoon.

Opted to get picked up from the hotel. This was promptly executed. This trip works well if for whatever reason, you do not know want to make a full day of it (short on time, busy morning, etc.) Jan was knowledgeable, approachable and a lovely guy. St Barbara's Cathedral was breathtaking. It just gives a different dimension to your visit in Prague. Highly recommended.

Rushed tour, no time for souvenirs or actual sightseeing

This "Half-Day Trip" is technically a 3-hour-trip, as most of the time is spent travelling to Kutna Hora. The visit to the Bone Ossuary was extremely short (10 minutes) with no time to get related souvernirs (which are also apparently not sold anywhere else in Kutna Hora). The visit to St. Barbara's Church was equally short, then a short walk through the town to a restaurant, with only 35 minutes left to either eat or stroll around on our own. Our guide knew a few interestings facts about the sights, but everything was very rushed (most additional sights we saw where immediatly dismissed by our guide because "no time"). With one additional hour the trip could have been less rushed. Or just go on your own and take a full day to explore the town. ("You understand?")

Interesting, inspiring, invigorating

What a great trip to remember! I used to stay away from 'organised trips' due to my antisocial nature ;) but this one was a perfect memory-maker for years to come. The locations, the guide, the program and the transport was all top-notch with a perfectly timing itinerary leaving enough time to explore. St Barbara's cathedral is a hidden gem of Europe - no joking. While the 'bones chapel' is heard of, The Cathedral itself was like an aesthetic epiphany - for anyone who is into Gothic, history, art, architecture. The whole nine yards. It's all here. Mixed with a beautiful weather and great food - a day trip to remember!

Disappointed

Guide was very weak. Gave basic information, nothing extra!!! We asked about things on the drive. He knew nothing. English was not as good as it should have been when all spoke English except for 3 on the tour. Would not recommend to a fried.

Kutna Hora 1/2 day NICE trip

Quite a bit to fit in during a 1/2 day trip but our guide Aris did a wonderful job doing so. The bone chapel is a must see.
