Splash Tours are a nice bunch. We had tried to book this with Captain Jack but they kept us pending because they had to wait until 10 people booked before they would confirm.. We waited for 2 days with nothing from them. When we mentioned this to Splash they told ua they could do this tour with 2 people confirming only, which was the perfect solution as it became a private tour! We got picked up at 7.30 and left the dock by 8.15 . First to the village to order lunch which is at Monkey Village. Boat trip there was fun and we navigated through the mangroves. Monkey Village is a small community at the mouth of Monkey River.. We went up river from there and saw the odd crocodile and a few howler monkeys. I wouldn’t say the wildlife is abundant by any means, but the experience was good. Our guide was knowledgeable in animal and plant biology and gave us much info and many stories, which was great. He was very detailed. Got to the forest and went for a walkabout.. Loads of mosquitoes!!! Saw howler troops and many different types of trees. Rainy season = muddy so go prepared for it. Glad we wore long pants and sprayed ourselves from top to bottom with bug repellent! It worked - not one bite remarkably. Forest part was around 40 minutes We took big leaves off the floor and fanned ourselves- also great mosquito repellent! Note well. Went up river a little more then returned to Monkey Village for lunch - Chicken Stew, Rice and beans and plantains. Was good. Did a little shopping of crafts to support local community - Important - then back on the boat for the hours or more ride home stopping to search for manatees. Saw one nose pop up for and some shadows of others. They were hiding. Saw a couple of turtles. Andnone came right up to our boat. Despite the lack of oceanic fauna, the boat ride was relaxing and as always our guide was sharing his knowledge - which was vast. He tried really hard to find manatees and went out of his way to search - his own choosing as he wanted us to see them. Entire trip was over half a day as we got back around 2pm.

The remake was just as good as the original!

You know, remakes are never as good as the original. We took this tour 13 years ago with our kids so we weren't really expecting to have as good a time on the return trip. We were 100% wrong! Monkey River village is still a quaint little place and Alice's food is just as fantastic. Our guides Douglas and Zane Garbutt were the best. Zane has eagle eyes and was pointing out things we would never have seen on our own. The howler monkeys were down from the canopy and literally no more than 5-10 feet from us. Lunch at Alice's restaurant was just as delicious as we remember. When we left Douglas took us to see manatee and we found a cow and calf almost immediately. Pretty cool for an Oklahoma kid and got a nice underwater video on the GoPro. We'll always remember this trip. Thanks again Splash! You are running a top notch operation.

Great family fun!

I took my parents and 2 boys (8&10) and we all had a great time. The boat ride through the river and mangrove forest was so fun. We hiked in and saw a few howler monkeys (heard them too), leaf cutter ants, and a boa constrictor! Off the boat we saw tons of birds, a baby croc, and manatee. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. The lunch in village was so delicious. We had a fantastic time!

Great guide!

Great experience - our guide grew up and lives in Monkey River so was incredibly well informed. We enjoyed the lunch at the local Alice's Restaurant.

Pretty good

Will and Randy were great. We saw geckos, crocodiles, 2 troops of howler monkeys, lots of birds which Will identified. We did see howler monkeys within about 10 ft. The bugs were fierce! Recommend 100% DEET. The only thing we didn't all see was manatees. Who knew that you are only only looking for their tennis ball sized noses to poke up?

Jungle hike and Manatee tour

Junior our guide was great!! The manatee and jungle hike tour was a truly unforgettable experience. It combined local charm, nature, adventure, and conservation in a perfect blend. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone seeking an authentic and awe-inspiring connection with the natural world. The howler monkeys for me were the highlight!

A great time!

Evaristo was fantastic! He went out of his way to make sure we saw a little bit of everything. I can understand how the sights would vary day to day. I was super pumped to see a boa constrictor baby, crocs, manatees and bats. We also ended up in the middle of a howler monkey territory battle (dozens of feet above our heads). We’ll worth an afternoon!

I took the tour with my husband and 25 yr old son. We were able to see a large number of bird species and eventually did see howler monkeys and even the splash of a manatee - other wildlife eluded us. Our guide, Jr. was extremely knowledgeable about the natural surroundings - he delivered a good amount of interesting historical information about the area as well as educated is on the plants and trees that the Kriol used in everyday life. We really enjoyed his delivery and he was always willing to elaborate or answer any questions we had. If he saw us pointing at or noticing anything he would stop the boat and share what he know about the attraction. The food was simple yet DELICIOUS! The village very much relies on tourists coming through, eating and maybe buying a bauble to bring home. They were truly grateful. We highly recommend this tour. While they can’t control the wildlife or even the weather - Jr. made every effort to find us whatever wildlife he could.

Monkey River Cruise

Clyde, our guide, is the best! He accommodated a couple who were at a different marina and turned back around to pick them up. We cruised through beautiful mangroves, saw a crocodile, howler monkeys, so many bird species and manatees. The jungle hike was amazing. The open ocean round trip was great- the weather perfect. Bring bug spray and sunscreen.

Great adventure

This was a great trip to the Monkey River. The guide was very good at spotting animals and very knowledgeable about birds. We saw all types of birds, dolphins, iguanas, monkeys, crocs and manatees. Lunch in the village was excellent as well. Thank you !

Expert guide

A great trip! Our guide was very experienced and an expert at spotting wildlife, including a manatee mama and her calf. Be sure you bring footwear that can get wet for the rainforest hike.

Day Trip to Monkey River

Our guide, Junior, was amazing. He was knowledgeable about the habitat including plants and animals. He was very accommodating with our elderly mother, making certain she did not feel rushed and was very patient answering repetitive questions. The lunch at Monkey Village was the best food we experienced on our entire trip. We saw all types of birds, howler monkeys, turtles, manatees, and crocodiles.

Not really monkey/manatee, but you’ll definitely see mosquitoes!

This was a nice tour specifically for the boat ride. It takes you out into the open water past a few other islands and into the mangroves. We stopped to put our “order” in for lunch and were told there is only one option. Despite me emailing them and telling them we have a strict vegan. He ended up being ok with rice and beans. Same for the other family on the trip who were non meat eaters. We then got back into the boat and made our way down the river. We saw a few crocodiles very close up - which was the highlight for us. We did see monkeys and bats (which were very cool). However, the forest walk is completely unnecessary. We wore flip flops - which was a HUGE mistake. To be fair, the guide did look at us before we got onto the boat and mentioned it would be very uncomfortable. But there were 2 other groups waiting and we didn’t want to go back to hotel for shoes. BIG MISTAKE. The entire trail was deep, slippery mud. I lost my shoe a few times. Almost fell several times. And, despite the guides warning to not touch anything, I grabbed a branch out of instinct to prevent a fall and ended up with 70 (!) thorns in my hand. I am writing this the next day and still have about 15 in my hand that are very deep and super painful. We saw one monkey on the walk and then, after about 30 minutes in, heard them but never saw them again. The mosquitoes were they very worst I’ve ever experienced. We were walking though WALLS of them- no exaggeration. At one point I looked at my daughter, and despite 100% Deet being on her, she had over 50 mosquitos on her back! They bit through our clothing (we had leggings on) and they could care less about the bug spray. We did not have any problems with bugs while on the boat. So, I would recommend this tour but ask the guide to skip the unnecessary, very uncomfortable hike into the jungle. If there are other people on your boat that want to go, you will be SOL because the boat is parked right at the entrance to the trail where the mosquitoes begin. After the hike we continued back to the village. Despite the lack of options, the food was extremely delicious. Chicken beans and rice that were homemade right before we got there. Excellent! I did feel bad for the non-meat eaters because we all paid the same price and they had a very light lunch with rice and beans as an only option. If you are doing this for with children, I would suggest packing some snacks and possibly some thing for lunch you know they will eat, like a sandwich. You leave at 9 AM and you do not get back to eat lunch until around 1 PM. Sidenote, we were offered sodas and beer. We opted for the beer as did another couple that was with us on the tour. When we went to leave it they charged us for the beer. Not a big deal but I wish they would’ve told us before hand in case we did not have cash on us. Huge cooler of water on the boat. There were 12 of us and we never ran out. We did not see any manatees on the way back. But, this is not a complaint by any means. Anytime you take a nature tour it is clearly up to the animals whether they want to be seen or not! So, in the end, if you are into boats and want to see the river this may be for you. It’s perfect for kids and we felt very safe the entire time. But even if you have bug spray, I would highly suggest avoiding the trek through the jungle. If you do go wear long sleeve and long pants and douse yourself in Deet.

Great for anyone interested in nature.

My grandkids ages 14 and 17 loved this so much. For a 72 year old grandmother, it was hot, humid, tons of mosquitoes and I would have rather been at the spa! That being said, it was very interesting but just be prepared for all the bugs! Loved seeing and hearing the howler monkeys and the manatees.

Guide was fantastic

This was our favorite tour in Belize. The Splash Dive van picked us up at our hotel, took us to their dock where we got on the boat. Our guide was fantastic!! He was able to spot birds & animals that we didn't see until he told us. While on the river, we saw many birds including a pelican & blue heron. Also, an iguana, barracuda, starfish & crocodile. While on the jungle hike, we saw howler monkeys, bats & thousands of ants carrying leaves (we'd never seen this up close before). He also took us through a bamboo canopy- it was awesome! We stopped for lunch at Alice's Restaurant at the mouth of the Monkey River. On the way back, we saw manatees (just the snouts). Then, at the dock, we saw a stingray! Oh, we lucked out- there weren't many mosquitoes or bugs. It was a great day!!

Monkeys galore, but no manatees sadly

The trip on the river was full of wildlife. We saw birds, bats, a crocodile, iguanas, fish, and spiders. The walk into the rainforest provided viewing of numerous howler monkey troupes. Definitely wear bug spray and lots of it! As for what could be improved, the guide did not take the time to learn our names (we were a group of four). Also, we did not see the manatees which was okay, but the guide did not communicate when we were heading towards them or when we were heading back to dock.

Excellent excursion

We saw many types of bird, some crocodiles, bats,and even a large python. The lunch in the village was excellent. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience the jungles of Belize.

Monkey River

Jason was our guide. He was amazing. He was born and raised in Monkey River Village. He made sure we seen monkeys, a crocodile, manatee, birds, iguana, bats, star fish, and turtles. He was knowledgeable about everything. It was one of the best days of our trip.

A Birthday trip up the Monkey River

Our guide, Will. He was knowledgeable, helpful, and careful. He was a first-rate guide. We saw and experienced a lot of new things, and enjoyed the day from start to finish. It was my wife's birthday and she felt the trip was a great gift.

Great wildlife experience

Jason Williams was our guide, he is a resident of the Monkey River village. He is very knowledgeable and we saw a variety of wildlife (birds, Howler monkeys, Manatees, Crocodile, Snakes and a Tarantula). Lunch was eaten at the village cafe, the special was fresh Snook. Absolutely delicious!!

MONKEY RIVER

It was a great tour and delivered everything promised and then some. We saw plenty of monkeys, crocodiles, turtles and tons of various colorful birds. And the highlight for us was stopping in a lagoon. We told our guide we really wanted to see manatees. He took us to a place where they are known to be. After just a few moments one came up, then another...and another...they were popping up and down like toast !! It was awesome. The only negative was I got bit by some kind of bug that made my hand swell a little. But the swelling was gone by the next morning.

Interesting Tour of the Monkey River

Splash did a great job in helping me book this trip and communicating what I needed to know. We were picked up by boat near Placencia and taken to the Monkey River, which is south. The boat ride was a little rough at times, especially when we were in open water. The ride went through some mango groves and then back to wider water. We stopped at a Garifuna village at the mouth of the river and then proceeded down the river. We stopped for a short hike, where we saw howler monkeys, termite nests, and various types of trees/vegetation. Then, we cruised down the river, where we saw crocodiles and several types of birds. Finally, after another stop at the Garifuna village, we returned to Placencia. We did see several manatees along the way. This was not my favorite tour for two reasons. First, I'd seen a lot of the animals on this trip during other tours I'd taken. If you haven't been in Belize for a while, this tour will help you to see different types of animals. Second, the mosquitos were so bad during the walk that they were biting me through my clothing. (I wore long sleeves and pants, and still got bitten.) In total, this tour lasted about 7 hours. I definitely recommend strong bug spray for the walk!! The boat ride is in the sun, so you probably need sunscreen.

Awesome Trip

We saw everything we expected to and more. We saw plenty of monkeys on the boat ride and while we heard them, we did not see any on the walking trip. Bring plenty of bug spray, the bugs are the worst I've ever experienced on the walking trip.

Jungle tour with Percy Gordon- now that’s Authentic!!

We had a great trip along the Monkey River with Percy. Highly recommend this guide and this tour operator, Barebones. If you are coming to Placencia on a cruise please use the local tour operators like Barebones and respect the use of the river by supporting local businesses. The cruise ships boats are too big for the river. Amazing Precious beautiful wildlife here in Belize!!

Great adventure outting!!

My wife and I took the a Monkey River Tour on our recent trip to Placencia, Belize and really liked it. We had beautiful weather and saw amazing birds, lizards, bats, 6+ foot crocodiles!!, howler monkeys and a manatee nose :-) Our guide pickup us up at our compounds which is on the lagoon side of the peninsula and 1/2 half way up. It was about a 30-40 minutes boat trip to the mouth of the the Monkey River and the small town. We stopped and placed our lunch order. You get to choose chicken, fried fish or baked fish which comes with rice and beans and a slaw/salid item - typical Belizian fare. We headed up the river and saw amazing birds, bats, croc's and iguana's. Our boat got very close to them and we just observed. There were probably 4-5 other boats we saw on the trip, but only occasionally where we close to them. We had to walk quite a ways through the jungle, off the path, to locate the howler monkeys. Take lots of bug spray, and maybe a long sleeve dive shirt for that part of the trip. The sound of the howler monkeys in the jungle is haunting and worth hearing. The view of the monkeys was so,so. They are up high. After our river tour, we stopped at the monkey river village and had lunch which was quite good. Other boat passengers also show up to eat there as well (there is only one place). We tipped heavy and then bought souvenirs at the tables by the dock - really to support the town. It's worth the trip. Takes about 2/3 of the day: leave at 8am back by 2pm.

Great tour went with Nite winds Tours

Bert was the captain of our boat and was very personable. Made the trip fun! Picked up our guide up in monkey river and saw lots of birds, monkeys, baby crocks and even saw a boa constrictor and saw some insect bats. The walk through the jungle was great with lots of information on the trees, herbal medicines and way of life . Had a great lunch at the restaurant in Monkey River before returning to Placencia! Would highly recommend these folks! Thanks for a great day!

Fun tour

Fun tour saw everything they say you will. Nothing like hearing howler monkeys live. Just a short stroll on a dirt path not a hike. Bring bug spray

Not much to see

On the monkey river tour. Highlight was seeing the manatee on the way back. To be fair, it literally poured on us the whole time. It’s a hour boat ride to the river in a small boat with no rain cover and it rained hard the whole way there. Then in the jungle it rained hard and the boat ride back to the restaurant was the hardest rain of the day. On the way back to Placencia the sun came out and dried us off a bit and we got to see a manatee. I’d skip this tour and see what it would cost to take a boat out to see manatees. E was

so much wildlife!

What a fun tour! My husband's favorite part might have been the boat ride out to Monkey River Village - but mine was the extensive amount of wildlife we were able to see. Our guide was born & raised in Monkey River Village, so he was very familiar with the area & local flora/fauna. We saw tons of birds, a crocodile, a boa, lots of bats, iguanas, howler monkeys, jesus lizards, turtles.......the list goes on! Really enjoyed the boat ride down the river - it kind of takes a different pace depending on what wildlife there is around. The jungle hike was nice as well. Nothing too steep or challenging - it was more like a mellow walk through the jungle. ProTip: Put on more bugspray than you need, and apply it on top of your clothes. Don't be like me and only apply it to exposed skin (I ended up with about 40 bites where the mosquitoes got me through my clothes). One last thing - the lunch at Alice's Restaurant was FANTASTIC. In our two week trip around Belize, that meal definitely ranks in our top 5!

Great guide made all the difference!

We have done a number of these tours and they are slow going so you can enjoy the wildlife and surrounds but if you don't have a good guide to find you things and know enough about them to help you experience it it's not the same. Our guide was fantastic we thoroughly enjoyed the tour and as a native of monkey river village he knew absolutely everything that we could ask for

Fantastic way to see nature and wild animals

We did this as an NCL tour and it was terrific. Saw lots of different birds along the river, as well as iguanas, crocodiles, Jesus Lizard. The hike into the jungle is quite short, about 20 mins or so but really worth it, saw howler monkeys, a huge tarantula 😱 and heard about the medicinal herbs and plants. Loved it 5*

Ask for Will! He is easily one of the best guides we have ever had, anywhere. He grew up in Monkey River Village and is passionate about the area and its flora & fauna. We saw howler monkeys, manatees, a crocodile, lots of birds & turtles & iguanas.

Long Trip

Long trip to hear Howler Monkeys and little else. Restaurant excellent at Monkey River Village. Really don't care which plants good for treatment of different ailments because I am rarely in Belize. I would not spend the money.

Monkey River

Had an amazing time touring the Monkey River. Our guide was born and raised in the village and was able to point out his childhood home. He went out of the way to make sure we saw every animal on the tour. Even took the time to find bats in a tree so we could see them up close and fly. The food was AMAZING and my 2 VERY picky daughters ate every last bit! Cant wait to come back and take the tour again. Thank you again Captain Jak's for a one of a kind experience.

Relaxing and Informative

The staff at Splash was extremely helpful and kind. Our tour guides taught us about the wildlife, and the plants in the jungle. We got to eat a wild fig from the jungle! We saw a ton of monkeys. Then after our tour, we stopped at a local restaurant for lunch and the food was excellent and authentic. Our guide gave us fresh mangoes he picked from a tree. Great time!

Monkey River tour with the King of the Howlers

What a day with Percy Gordon, the King of the Howlers! Percy is so knowledgeable about everything in his environment. He introduced us to manatees, numerous species of birds, crocodiles, tons of plants and of course Black Howler monkeys. But the best part was Percy. He's genuinely one of the most friendly and personal people you'll ever meet. Percy filled the day with stories, jokes and more than a few friendly pranks. Beautiful!

I ended up getting a private tour of the Monkey River and Manatee watch because no one else showed up, and it was amazing. The guide is excellent at navigating his boat in and out of places, and he was extremely knowledgeable. He knew every species of animal and tree we found. He said his eyes were going, but he had the sharpest vision on the river. He would find things and then point them out to other boats that drove right past them. He gave a lot of really good information about all the species we saw as well and historic information about the site and uses of different trees in the area. I would highly recommend it! We stopped for lunch in Monkey River village, and everyone was very nice and the food was great! The manatee watch was very fun as well. The guide knew when a manatee was going to surface and always pointed it out. We saw probably a dozen manatees.

Awesome experience!!

Our tour was arranged by Leo of the Green Parrot. The key to our wonderful experience was that the two of us were toured by Evar, an unbelievable guide. He grew up at Monkey River Village and has an unparalleled experience - he, with family members, actually cut the trails on which we explored the forest. Besides knowing the area like the back of his hand, he has the uncanny ability to see the birds and river animals that neither of could see until they finally moved. We were picked up at the Green Parrot, where we were staying, but I am sure one could arrange pickup anywhere on the coast.The only sighting we missed was dolphins. Everything else was pointed out.

Uniquely beautiful experience

Our guide, who grew up in Monkey River Village, guided us (4 persons group) very competent through the whole day. We went through the beautiful lagoon to the Monkey River. During the whole trip our guide showed us a lot of animals that we certainly wouldn't have seen on loan. Many different birds, crocodiles, iguanas, turtles etc. After the mooring of the boat we went for a short time through the jungle, where we met the howler monkeys. That was a great experience. While driving back through the river and the lagoon we could enjoy the nature again. At the stopover in Monkey River Town we enjoyed a wonderful fish with tastey rice and vegetables from the Creole kitchen. Shortly before the end of our day trip we could watch manatees from the boat in the lagoon. It was a unique beautiful excursion with many great memories.

Outstanding wildlife experience

There were just 6 of us on a small boat plus our guide, Evar, who grew up in Monkey River. We were picked up in Placencia around 8 then were in Monkey River by about 9. On the way we wound through mangrove near the coast and our guide pointed out many birds -- egrets of varying sizes, blue herons of varying sizes, green herons, frigate birds, various gulls, etc. -- we had good views of all of these along the coast. At Monkey River Village, we stopped to place a lunch order at Alice's restaurant (there may be some flexibility, but mainly it was "yes" I want lunch, which was fine by us). The town is small and has a small beach. The trip upriver was like being in a National Geographic TV show. Ospreys, vultures, more of the aforementioned herons and egrets, were just some of the larger birds. Many beautiful smaller birds of varying bright colors. Evar, the guide, had some binoculars we could borrow, but we also brought our own spotting scope. There is dense jungle on the banks, but Evar was able to spot bats (sleeping on undersides of trees), boa constrictors (coiled up and sunning on branches), iguanas (mostly orange), crocodiles (several, some sunning on beach or logs, some hiding and watching us), and of course howler monkeys. At one point we got out underneath a tree with a family of howler monkeys feeding and relaxing in it. This family was pretty quiet (the ones we saw later were not, and earned their nickname). At one point we stopped to hike through the jungle/rainforest to get closer to some howler monkeys, which we did -- very exciting to see and hear them -- it's a very eerie sound. Before hiking, we put on some bug spray (recommend bringing 100% deet from home, as only 30% can be bought in Belize, according to our guide). Evar also had bottles of water for us. Sturdy shoes are also recommended. We saw only a few bugs until we got onto land, but in the jungle they are everywhere. In addition to the several families of monkeys here, we saw beautiful blue and yellow butterflies, termite nests (one of our party snacked on some termites), and a variety of interesting trees and plants. Evar's knowledge of all the species was expert and fascinating, like having our own naturalist along. After the hike we continued upriver for a while, seeing more crocs, turtles, birds, etc., then headed back to the village for lunch at Alice's Restaurant, which was delicious. Saw manatees on way back to Placencia. Out of room for more praise; all was great!

Geweldige ervaring op Belize

Wij gingen met een bootje van onze cruise in een hoge snelheid wat op zich al uniek is over de zee naar de mond van de Monkey River. Hier ging de reis in een slakke gang over de rivier waarbij de kundige gidsen ons veel vertelde over het eiland en de natuur. Daarbij hebben wij vele wilde dieren geien. Na een tijdje hebben wij aangelegd en gingen het regenwoud in waar wij liepen met de apen boven ons hoog in de bomen. Deze maakte een hels kabaak om hun vrouwtjes te beschermen. Na een tijdje zijn wij weer via de rivier terug gegaan naar het schip. In een woord DOEN.

Großartige Wildlife Tour!

Die Tour hat gut 4 Stunden gedauert und wir eine kleine Gruppe von 7 Leuten. Wir sind um 8 Uhr in Placencia gestartet. Wir sind als erstes über die Lagune, dann durch die Mangroven zum Monkey River gefahren. Dann ein ganzes Stück über den Fluss. Ralph unser Guide hat uns super die Fauna und Flora gezeigt und erklärt. Wir haben viele Seevögel und Leguane gesehen und sogar ein Krokodil. Dann haben wir noch einen kleinen Walk durch den Dschungel gemacht und haben dort eine Vogelspinne und Affen gesehen und viel über die Heilpflanzen erfahren. Zurück im Monkey River Village gab es noch ein gutes Mittagessen. Auf dem Rückweg nach Placencia haben wir noch ein Manatee gesehen. Ein toller und erlebnisreicher Ausflug. Sehr zu empfehlen.
