We arrived at about 8:00 am and we got our tickets right away and went up the tram. The only problem in the morning is the morning mist that covers the skyline. But the views were great. We hiked a few km to the tea house for a drink. The drink receipt gave y it s a free golf cart back to the tram

Intense walk but enjoyable

The walk is very intense if you want to try. We walked up with 2 very fit kids aged 10 and 12. It takes about 2hrs and is almost a non stop stairclimb upwards. If you get midway there is the option to ask the station master to radio to the base and have the next train pick you up. Once you reach the top the views are great and the temperature is very pleasant. There are various walking trails we took probably the hardest and fastest trail, most of it was out of the sun with good shade. Take plenty of water as there are no stores until the top. There are bathrooms at the middle station 1hr up. There are a lot of monkeys at the back of the hill. Also bizarrely a zombie exhibition that doesn't quite fit in with the scenery and park. The weather changes quickly with clouds rolling in and out.

Panoramic views and a bit of nature to boot!

Awesome ride up the hill to a spectacular lookout across the city & island. From there, we did the nature trail bit which was a nice relaxing stroll as well.

Amazing views!

We are a family with two kids, age of 3 years and 7 months. We stayed for 7 days in Penang and decided to go Penang Hill. Its really amazing to be surrounded by nature and amazing views. Our kids loved to take the train, the nature and see the monkeys. There are also alot of food options. Try to avoid weekends and Malaysian holidays. If traveling with young kids, booking a fast lane ticket is recommended.

Unique train ride

Must have experience at least once in a lifetime. The train ride is amazing, something that you wouldn't get from somewhere else. Make sure you buy the ticket via online to save time and buy only the express lane ticket to avoid long queue. However there's a chance to avoid the crowd of you come before 7am. You might get cheaper ticket price too if you come this early.

Fun, exciting ride experience

If you want to be on long line queue , book online with mobile ticket is the fastest way to get service . I got redeemed ticket at the office at time of ticket office operating at 6:15 , riding on the first train from lower station at 6:30am Sunday. Yes, it’s crowded with tourists to go up the hill to see sunrise. Go early and get the front place onboard to see the view without struggle.

RUDE STAFF.. ROUGH APPROACH NOT FOR FOREIGNERS.. ONLY FOR LOCALS

When tried to board the train " MR ALIF " ( As per floor manager zulkhairi ) MISBEHAVED and SHOUTED without any reason and even I believe used some Malay slang ( not sure as I don't know Malay ) as well.. lodged complaint as well with legal staff but I am not sure if any action taken yet.. THEY CLEARLY DON'T WANT FOREIGN TOURISTS.. ( Specifically INDIANS ).. after all this incident when confronted ALIF.. he ran away and didn't even told his name.. got to know his name from his floor manager zulkhairi who is calm guy.. He also believed and told me that ALIF should have apologiesd but he didn't.. I also offer to see the CCTV footage together to the staff which they didn't took any interest In short nothing extraordinary much above apart from the train which works inclined and the worst part is the attitude of the staff.. AVOID lot of other places to go DISAPPOINTING

Great ride and visit to penang hill

The funicular was a great ride. Penang hill is a good place to visit, especially the Habitat which is a special place. Definitely pay the extra fee for the fast lanes on the funicular. Its well worth the amount of time you save instead of being in the long queues.

Fun ride up the mountain, if you can get in..

Came on a Sunday to ride up to the top of the hill, found there was a 2.5 hr wait at 1400! So we came back on Tuesday at 0900 and went straight in. Whilst it's not a long ride it's impressively steep and through dense jungle, so the vistas are amazing! Kids loved the excitement of it, and as a bonus you get to do it all in reverse on the way down..

A great view

The entry to the funicular railway could be daunting. Large queues of people either waiting to purchase tickets or waiting for their allocated group to board the train. The train itself was crowded but worth any problems encountered. The climb is very steep but if you are lucky enough to get a view outside, rewarding. Once there at the summit the views are magnificent. Even though on the day we were there it was slightly hazy but still a great view. Recommend to visit

Nice experience

Nice experience. Definitely worth paying extra for the fast train option. You get to skip the line and get on the train first. Beautiful nature walk, not to strenuous. Half a day was enough for us but you could spend the day

Enjoyable Funicular Ride, great views.

We arrived about 10 am. There was no q to purchase tickets but a queue had already formed inside. Think we had to queue for about 20-30 minutes to board the funicular. Although we were 1st in queue for our funicular car, those with express tickets were ushered to board first. It is reasonable as they paid more. The track up was steep but the funicular went up at quite a fast speed. We were greeted with misty view at the top. We waited about 2 hours for the mist , then drizzle, to clear, passing time eating at the food court there. There is also another restaurant at the top station. After walking around the top section, we went to visit the Habitat, which was a very pleasant stroll within a UNESCO Biosphere.

Disappointing Penang Hill Experience Due to Long Wait Times

I personally didn't enjoy the Penang Hill experience because the waiting time to go up and come down was too long. There were a lot of people, and while the cable car ride only took about 5 minutes, the wait time was nearly an hour.

Good ingeresting place to visit, specially worth the views, the hindu temple and the habitat. Try to go early as crowds are there soon

Great way to spend a day!

A great way to spend the day, stunning views amongst the cooler climate and open space. My son and I did the first half of the Heritage walk which was a 350m elevation clime up steep steps, but luckily were able to get the Funicular at Middle Station (if you walk take a LOT of water with you, as the 1L each we took wasn’t enough). Once at the top, it’s a little crazy with the number of people, a lot of the local head up to escape the heat, but there is a lot of space and some great walks! Well worth doing!

Try to go early say before 9:30 to avoid queuing for the funicular ride. The ride was fast, pretty safe too.

Bad service

the services is too slow. really time wasting going up here, u hv to wait abt 2hrs to go up and another 2hrs to go down back. not so much things to do even everything is overpriced & overated. wont repeat

Love the funicular ride and the views

We were lucky to be there in an overcast day with no queues. Riding up the funicular was a treat because somehow we ended up in the front cubicle just beside the driver and had the best view ever. The ride was definitely worth it. Lots of greenery too. The views up at Penang Hill are a treat too and there’s lots of flowers and plants around the area. We combined this trip with a visit to The Habitat to give us a more rainforest experience.

Overpriced and overtated.

Overpriced and slow. Foreigners must pay 3 times more than malaysiand. Waiting time is up to 2 hours. It is a tourist trap.

Not fun

There is nothing there. Don’t go! No info what so ever once you’re up there! We didn’t saw any monkeys! And the train to crowded!

Funicullar ride that is not fun at all

The start part is the worst of a fun Penang hill experience, The start was the start of queuing to buy the tickets, It's understandable to have only 1 person to buy tickets for the entire group, to reduce the length of the Q, But what happened to us was, we were a family of one Malaysia and 3 others, The Girly at the "Q" start made a discriminating remark" satu ajaeh Mykard rate , lain semua foreigner rate" we answered "Yah kita tahu", In the first place we were not even inquiring if we can buy all 4 tickets at MyKard rate, so to tell us that is inappropriate, Cause nowadays everyone is knowledgeable enough to understand the pricing, If we can afford to come to Penang for holiday, a RM30 tickets would not be a problem, Furthermore, it's the responsibility of the staff as t the ticketing counter to inform us of the prices and not before even entering the queue, It's disheartening and unwelcoming, Now the train boarding part, When it was our turn to board, all the cabins were full, so when we requested if we could wait for the next tram, we were told a utter lie, Next tram is 30mins away, when it is clear a ride is only 5 minutes, so we just bought the lie and went into a crowded cabin for the ride, It was the same when the ride down, Even though we were the first few in the queue, we wanted to enter an empty cabin, but was told to fillup an already filled up cabin, while 2 staffs working at a nearby food court were given a free liberty to the enter the empty back cabin, so a paying guest are treated lesser,

Up and down. Great and absolutely excellent... if you get your timings right.

You can see the photos. Great Kodak opportunity. The train is special. The trick is to choose your time wisely. We went at 430pm. Hardly any queue to go up. No need for Express ticket. We chose to go down early at 545pm. Again we chose the time to avoid any queues. Managed to slide into the front cabin. sitting on the step going down. So can take a fun video of the train speeding down.

Wonderful experience. Take a taxi.

Dont book a tour. Take a taxi. A wonderful experience. Its one thing you should do if visiting Penang. The Hill Station monkeys are fun too.

lines are crazy long

staff are idiots, no idea what is going on. Told the normal line was 25 mins and express was 15, when it was closer to 75 and 15. Tou have to stand in a hot crowded room the whole time, it's a nightmare with young kids.

Great 360 degree views

Take a grab to Penang Hill Funicular Station where you get a two way ticket up to Penang Hill. Buy a ticket when you reach the summit to do The Habitat ( best views / track on the hill ) Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife such as green snake , monkeys , orb spiders , giant squirrel and giant ants and millipedes. Avoid, they hate tourists

Utterly useless, closed! Lot's of people turning up, closed indefinitely and no information on the website. Totally contemptuous of tourists and incompetent management. Checked the website in advance and no suggestion it's closed.

Fun day out

Easy booking through Viator and convenient to pick up tickets at the counter. We got there at around 9.30am and queued for well over an hour to get up so would recommend going early. Also, once you’re up there the best bit is definitely Habitat - such a cool place to visit. The rest of the hill is a bit touristy and not that interesting to be honest!

Definitely worth seeing in Penang

We had a great time visiting Penang Hill on the furnicular railway. We had the fast track tickets but it didn’t seem too busy, the trains run every 30 minutes from 6.30 am until 11 pm….and it was amazing going up the steep hill through the jungle. You get fantastic views of Georgetown from the top, it was nice and cool compared to the city and there is a temple and mosque plus lovely walks where you may see monkeys and plenty of other wildlife as the hill is a biosphere reserve. You can take a buggy to see the colonial cottages that were used by the well off to escape the heat of Georgetown in earlier times and there are places to eat and get a cold drink. It’s an interesting place and worth your time.

Well worth the extra for express lane.

Went on a rainy day but still managed to get some great views. David Brown's restaurant was nice for coffee break. Was bit disappointed with the historical things to see or do but views make up for it.

Worth the Visit….

Worth the visit for the view and it was a bit cooler! Great little bar for refreshments. There was this little walk with “heart arches”…but you had to pay….hmmmm… just trying to make money but this just spoiled the moment.

The Funicular ride and courteous, helpful staff. Nice wonderful place. Food wise is ok. Wonderful buggy ride.

This is a must visit during your trip to Penang. Try to go around 4pm. The weather is cooling on top. My wife, MIL and two kids went on a weekend in April and there wasn’t much ppl. Remember to use the habitat buggy service (30RM) to make it even more worthwhile. Overall I would say it’s a must-try.

Very high

Think it is the highest funicular I have been on. Amazing view at top , where there is a small display and temples. Hard work walking in the heat.

A great ride

The Funicular ride was quite exciting especially coming down when you are speeding towards that narrow tunnel. It felt very crowded and slow going up, and for some reason it took a long time to load people onto the train at the bottom. It was very busy, they must move a lot of people every day. Cost was 30 Ringgit return per person . It is one heck of a train and must have been a massive job building it back in the day . Well worth doing, very steep, long and fast .

Must do trip

Book the fast track and order you ticket via Viatour by far the best way to do it. View point worth the trip up there, plenty of grab taxi for your return at the base station

Trip to Penang

Really worth doing this trip . The train ride takes you 714m above sea level and then when you get to the top the views are amazing.

Review for the funicular up

For faster experience esp for elderly or young kids, get the fast pass and book ahead of time. You skip the line and can get the best seats on the funicular. Waiting area have seats and aircon esp up at the top.

Penang Hill Resort

A fabulous place to visit. The Funicular is a great experience. Fast track tickets recommended. We went early at 9am so crowds were not too much of an issue. The walk around the Habitat and skywalk is a must do We saw monkeys and enjoyed listening to the jungle noises. A nice Ed drink in the cafe at the end was welcome and there is a shuttle service back to the station.

Not worth wait times

Unfortunately Penang hill was not a positive experience for us. We were warned that there could be queues but we had to wait over an hour an a half to take the funicular up. The view is nice and we did a walk but not much to do up there really. When we went to get our queueing ticket to come back down we were told it would be an hour but we actually had to wait over two hours before we could get back down. If we had know we would have walked! We could see when we were in the line that they weren’t doing a good job of making it efficient as sometimes that cable car was going pack down empty despite hundreds of people waiting, then we were waiting so long for the next funicular to come even though it’s only a 5 minute ride are there are two of them. Overall something that could have been a good experience was ruined by the wait time. Not worth it for us at all.

We visited this place in the afternoon. I think best time to visit is early morning or post 4pm ad it takes approx 2-3 hours to explore whole place .Its full nature, Great views .Wholesome experience

Taking it to the Top!

Seeing Penang from the highest point feels like the best way to start a vacation! Reaching the top via the funicular is a lot of fun and a dramatic entrance to the top of the hill. Once up, there’s a good couple hours of fun to be had. Great!

A must do in Penang

Very well organised. Easy ticket collection and easy to see when it was our turn. Quite a long wait ( 12 midday) Quick but fun ride to the top. You may have to stand but only 5 minutes. Very good

A must visit in your Penang itinerary

When I heard the word canopy I was afraid. But when I saw and walked in the structures I was bowled over. An architectural and engineering phenomenon. Stupendous views and informative and pleasant Habitat. I was thoroughly impressed by the helpfulness if the staff and the wealth of knowledge about flora and fauna and animal life the Habitat afforded.

Miss the Queues

Having the fast track tickets meant we could skip the queue which was enormous. We had a fabulous time at the top. Thoroughly recommended.

Fun trip, very touristy

Singapore’s version of a roadside attraction. We lucked out, got there early (with fast lane tickets) and left around noon, so no long lines either way. It is a fun ride. The habitat walk was informative, scenic and quiet —especially compared to the lively crowds at the funicular exit.

PENANG TRAIN

My husband and I paid for a fast lane ticket both ways on the Penang Hill train. I highly recommend paying the extra as the wait time was more than 1hour, we waited less than 5minutes. Well worth the visit.

Always buy a fast pass

Very good but very busy at weekends and peak times . If you can buy a fast pass ticket as the queue to return Dow. Can be up to 2 hours long . The views are quite spectacular
