Not "Local" at all - disappointing waste of time and money

My experience with the “award-winning Private food tour with 6 tastings” was terrible and very similar to a recent review by Alex. I selected the tour based on numerous good reviews but unfortunately it was a flop that cost us a lot of money and wasted time. I had booked the tour for myself and my daughter, my sister-in-law and my niece who had all met in Paris for a special Mother’s Day weekend. To start things off our guide was late to the designated meeting point. She then told us we were going to walk to the subway and take it to an entirely different location - and told us to go and purchase our tickets. We were very confused as to why we met at one location and then had to waste at least 15 minutes each way to get to another location during a short 2 hour tour. The new location had no street life or vibe and we didn’t even walk around but entered the restaurant on the first corner after coming up from the subway. After our guide argued with the host about a table for us, we were served a 3 course meal. During the meal, our guide did not tell us anything about French life or food or the city but wanted to know what our expectations were for the tour. She did not even know anything about the food we were eating. She had nothing “local” to tell us (she had lived in Paris for 10 years and had only worked for Withlocals for two weeks) clearly did not even know the format for a tasting tour. We were getting very frustrated at this point and pulled up the listing of the tour to show her. She stated that she had received no information that matched the description and seemed to have no guidelines for how to conduct the tour. We spent an hour there basically hearing about her experience as a tour guide and letting her know that it really wasn’t living up to our expectations. After our meal we made our way across the street to a bakery where she purchased a couple of baguettes for us with the promise of some cheese “if we can find it”. We never did because at this point we were almost out of time - we had to get back to our meeting point. When we came up from the subway she spotted a macaron shop and let us select some of the cookies to take with us. She then handed us the bag of baguettes and that was it! We could not believe that we had just spent several hours of our short time in the beautiful, historic city of Paris in a strange location which had no street life with a woman who did not share one bit of local information.  I did reach out directly to Withlocals and TripAdvisor to request a refund but received a bit of a runaround before my claim was rejected.

Great food tour!

We had a great tour with Anukool - he was informative, took time to discuss the food selections (which were terrific) and shared interesting stories of Paris and his own travels. When you book a private tour, having a personable, informed guide is a necessity and Anukool was all that and more. A 10+ experience!!

Local specialties at historic neighborhood market

Anukool started our tasting at a local market and gave us the history. The cheese and tamponade were excellent. The desserts and pastries in the local neighborhood were also excellent. Finishing with charcuterie board and crepes provided us with an extensive variety. He is very personable and knowledgeable in history. It was a lovely experience!

Unplanned, unprofessional, and overall not worth the money

This wasn’t much of a food tour. We went to two restaurants total (one Italian bistro and one crêperie). At the first restaurant we had fried calamari, a fried chicken cutlet, and sardine rillettes. We then took a train to another part of town and had a crepe. The boulangerie she was going to take us to was closed, so we only tasted 4 items by the end of the tour (even though we paid for 6). Though I’m not sure I would call this a tour. It was more like a 300€ lunch with cheap/not-particularly-interesting food and conversation with a stranger about her business ventures and family dynamics. We expected that we would be walking around, learning about the area, and trying food on something of a preplanned tour route (like your standard walking tour). The guide didn’t talk about the city almost at all. She spent a lot of time complaining about her previous guests she had taken on a tour earlier in the day. She clearly didn’t have a preplanned route - she just made it up on the fly, and consequently it was a bad experience. Most frustratingly, we made it very clear to the guide that we needed to return to the start location of the tour by the prescribed end time (2 hours). Instead, she left us on the other side of the city 2 and a half hours later (literally 30 minutes of travel from where we started), leaving us racing at rush hour to get to another reservation we had. The tour guide was nice, but this whole experience felt unplanned, unprofessional, and a waste of our money and time.

Amazing Food Tour!

We had the best experience! I was hesitant to book this tour after reading reviews, but so glad I did. Martina is AMAZING. She really listened to what we wanted and made this a teenage friendly experience that was fun for the whole family. We had amazing food and also an adventure. Martina is a wealth of knowledge that made this experience so fun and she has surprises in store. I love that this is not a cookie cutter food tour and she tailors it for you. I highly highly recommend her.

Sara was amazing! She reached out the day before the trip to see if there was anything particular I wanted to try or if I had any food limitations. Once we met up it was walking through Paris with a new friend. Sarah was very polite, professional and knowledgeable. Andrea was a great guide and took us to Montmarte area and sampled some great local food and drinks. He was very knowledgeable about Paris!

You will be disappointed

Well, this was certainly not what we expected. We met Andrea who was very nice and knowledgeable about the history of the city. He even provided great insights into some of the neighborhoods, which was interesting. However, there was no planning involved and even asked us where and what we wanted to eat. The tour site advertised 6- unique tastings, but we only tasted 3-dishes at 2-different locations because that is all the budget allowed…If you no nothing about French food, this may help. But if you are a foodie with some knowledge you will be disappointed…

Perfect first tastes of Paris

Gelsomina was a wonderful guide to take us for our first tastes of French food. She was also accommodating to the location change and was patient and sweet with our kids. When we had requests, she was happy to indulge us and give us suggestions when we needed help choosing. Everything was delicious, we recommended the restaurants to other friends in Paris. We also leaned a lot about Paris while walking between places. So grateful for our time with Gelsomina!

Perfect way to start our trip!

My husband and I booked the food tour with Gelsomina for our first morning in Paris, as a way to orient ourselves to the city. After all, food is a key component of our travel experience. When Gelsomina learned that we were first-timers to Paris, she suggested some itinerary changes that would enable her to introduce us to some of the sights and history of the city as well. It was the perfect way to start our exploration of Paris. Gelsomina was a lovely and gracious host, taking care to share some of her favorite spots with us, as well as recommendations for the rest of our trip. We ate delicious food, while learning about the city and Parisan life in general. It felt like we had a family friend showing us around. Delightful! I would highly recommend the experience.

Withlocals Food Tour in Paris Was Excellent: Recommended

I recommend the food tasting with locals and our guide Ankool specifically. We met in the Square Trousseau and the food tastings were all nearby. We began with pasties and coffee at Ble Sucre. Fantastic. We went to a local market, Marche d'Aligre, and had a cheese selection and bread (yum!). If we were staying for any time in a flat, we would visit the marche a lot. We strolled to Au Merveilleux for more cake (very light and sweet) and then a bar called Parisii for some wine and charcuterie. All the time, Ankool was telling us about the neighborhood, history, and food. We wrapped up by having some crepes and then going to Le Baron Rouge for some wine, and what a fantastic wine bar that is: packed out the door, oysters, lots of wine selection, enthralling. Ankool was very personable and informative. This was a fantastic tour and I would do it again.

Personalized Food Tour

This tour of the Paris food scene was amazing! Andrea was our tour guide and he was AMAZING! The tour was personalized to our taste and Andrea was so knowledgeable about the neighborhood and where the best of the best was being sold. He had wonderful communication prior to our tour! Be sure to ask for him by name when you book!!!

Depends on your guide?

Honestly, I am not one to write bad reviews but our tour guide didn’t plan at all. I booked this tour with the expectation of tasting some great French food, but we spent most of the time walking trying to figure out what to eat as it was so unplanned and I didn’t feel like it was worth the money paid for this tour. I hope that the tour company will ensure some plan from its guides. I felt like this tour would have been better if I had planned it myself and picked random places to try food.

Experience hidden gems with a Local!

Jay catered the walking food tour of Paris perfectly to our needs and was interesting and entertaining! We got to experience the most delicious foods while also learning fun facts about local customs and practices! We would recommend Jay to anyone interested in a true authentic Parisian experience!!!

A nice night near the market in Paris

I booked this tour for my spouse and myself, along with two friends traveling with us. The locations we visited were great; they were clustered in the neighborhood near the meeting point, so there wasn't too much walking involved. The booking includes the cost of the food consumed at the stops, so go ahead order what you really want!

Fun and full!

Anukool was the best guide! He made sure we had a nice mix of dishes (sweet and savory) and showed us a part of Paris wr never would have explored. Since 10 tastings can be a lot, he helped us pack the leftovers for us to enjoy in the evening. To top it all off, Anukool spoke Hindi which made my parents feel completely at ease from the start. Definitely worth it!

Started late and ended early. Felt more like an awkward date than a tasting food tour.

First our guide, Anukool, changed the meeting location three hours prior to the meeting time stating "Due to the current shop closing timings near the mentioned meeting point I wanted to let you know about a change in the meeting point for the tour." It changed from 112 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine to 3 Pl. Saint Germain des Pres, a 4 kilometer change on the left bank instead of the right. Then he was 15 minutes late. We wound up goint to five different places for our "10 Local Food and Drink Tastings" It honestly wound up feeling like an awkward date with three people than a food tour. Anukool provided some background on the places we went and their significance but did so while walking and given there were two of us on the tour, one of us usually missed the information since we couldn't walk three abreast in the busy streets. The stops weren't tastings as much as they were, "Here is a well reviewed place, pick something to eat and I will buy it for you with your tour fee" We sat at a creperie and ate, well, a full crepe each, not exactly a "tasting." At two confectionary stops the guide just followed us around the shop with a bag while we picked out treats. On our walk around we passed, and the guide gave the history of, the Marché Alimentaire Saint-Germain produce market, which was open, but we didn't walk through it. Which felt like a big missed opportunity. At the last place we ordered a charcuterie platter and we wound up listening to his life story instead of details about the food scene in Paris. He has apparently been a tour guide for many years. That did not come across. The tour ended 30 minutes early because we wound up at the last place sooner than he planned and he didn't have additional places lined up to visit. At that point we didn't want to waste any more time so we didn't ask him to take us anywhere else.

Fantastic Food Tour

Anukool was a terrific host/guide. Our adventure started with a lost phone and he helped us to communicate with the driver, since our French was limited. Our tour started at this well known bakery, where we enjoyed a sweet treat and a coffee. We then stopped at a cute market, where we were able to sample cheeses, tapenades and breads. From there we had a scrumptious dessert and then went to an establishment where we tried local meats alomg with a cocktail. Anukool's knowledge of the area and foods were vast and thoroughly enjoyed our tour!

Disappointed

While our guide was very nice it was not a set tour like I have previously done. I would definitely recommend doing 10 vs 6 unless you are extremely short on time and going earlier versus later in the day.

I am giving this tour a unfavorable review with a caveat. I read so many great reviews about the tour guides and how helpful and interesting their guides where. So I was really looking forward to my tour. I initially scheduled this particular tour because of the reviews but also because the starting point was close to the hotel that I was staying at. The night before our tour I was contacted by our guide who asked me where I wanted to go for my tour. I was a little confused because this being my first time in Paris, I wasn't familiar with any of the areas. He gave me some options that didn't give me any valuable information so I suggested meeting somewhere close to my hotel location because we would be walking. I also mentioned that I was interested in some history of Paris. He made a suggestion of where to meet. The next morning when I spoke to my hotel concierge, they told me that the meeting location was quite far away and we would need a taxi. So after a 50$ taxi ride, we met our guide who first informed us that he wasn't a "professional guide" so we need to let him know what we wanted to see. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but don't you typically hire someone to show you areas of interest if you are a tourist? If I knew what I wanted to see I would have done the tour myself. He then informed us that we needed to be mindful of our 23$ budget per person. We certainly had enough to eat for the time of day that scheduled our tour but it seemed a little tacky to let us know we had a budget. We split most of the items that we purchased. Some breakfast sweets, warm wine and a crepe so we were able to stay in our budget and felt for a brunch time walk that we had enough to eat, but the guided tour was less than interesting. I should also mention that our guide was ill with cold symptoms and was coughing and sneezing all over everything. I wish now that we would have ended the tour early but I kept hoping that the tour would improve based on all the great reviews. I will say that if we would have had a more "Professional(?) " tour guide we may have had a better experience. My learning from this tour was to see if requesting a specific guide before booking would be an option for any future tours that I may take.

Not insightful or timely

Tour guide was over 15 minutes late and compared to other tours this fell flat. For my other tours my guides knew all about the food and restaurants. On this tour it was just go to a nearby eatery and pick what you want to eat while learning nothing about the food or the restaurant. There are better and cheaper tours than this.

Food and history in a fun tour

We met Alpha near our airbnb - which was not her usual location - but it worked out all for the best. It was a great tour of an area we had never explored in Paris. We are not familiar with the district and Alpha knew just where to take us. It was fun from start to finish. She is a great host, the conversation flowed. The food was amazing and we had lots of leftovers for later in the day. The history, the market, the food - all great. In fact we couldn't find cafe creme anywhere else in France or Spain that matched the wonderful one we had at our first stop. Alpha was really fun to hangout with for 3 hours - and we would highly recommend this tour for any visitors to Paris.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Jay. He was very open to talk about almost anything. He was very knowledgeable of French history and French culture. He made us very comfortable to ask any questions. The food we tried was excellent and well presented. Highly recommend the tour with Jay.

Delicious and Educational

My husband and I had a delightful experience with Catherine. The cheese tasting was much more than just a culinary experience, but a journey into the terroir of France. I highly recommend this to anyone going through Paris, who has a fondness for fromage.

Do not book this tour!!

We signed up for a ten stop food tour. Our local guide, Jay, was sweet. The tour was a huge disappointment. We went to a bakery to get a baguette then a place that provided 3 cheese and three tapenades, I also got a beer, my husband doesn’t drink. After what we thought was an appetizer, we went to a wine bar where we got one glass of wine. Then on to three bakeries where we got one small pastry each. That was the extent of the ten stop food tour!! We paid the guts of 400 for this extremely ridiculous tour! We will request our money back, this was a complete rip off!!! Do not waste your time and money.

Must Do!!

Gelsomina was awesome! We couldn't quite find the meeting point, so she came to find us. She slowed the pace and customized this walking tour around the Latin Quarter to meet our needs and even ran over the time a bit. She provided excellent directions for getting to our next tour and even how to get to the one spot we didn't have time for during our tour with her. Her knowledge was exceptional and her recommendations were spot on! This was a great way to get a taste of Paris and Gelsomina was the perfect person to show us around!!

Such a great value!

We do food tours everytime we travel and our tour with Alpha was one of the best yet! Not only did she engage us with hilarious conversation and lots of interesting facts about living in Paris, but we ate SO much food and got to take home the leftovers. It's such a great value!

Terrible

This was the worst tour we have ever been on. Our guide had nothing prepared. We are from Canada and wanted to know all about the foods etc in Paris. Absolutely horrible. He asked us where we wanted to go and what we wanted to try. How on earth are we to know this. This is why we booked the tour. Never do this again!

Amazing experience

We were party of 8 - all different ages and background and each of us tremendously enjoyed the tour given by Gelsomina. She has a vast knowledge of Paris and she was able to tailor the tour that we tried a lot of different and tasty bites while learning a lot about history and culture of Paris. She had such an amazing and warm personality that we felt like walking with somebody we know for a while. Thank you, Gelsomina.

Cheese Tasting with Catherine

My friend and I were in Paris for a long weekend, celebrating 25 years since were were students there. We enjoyed an absolutely wonderful afternoon with Catherine, despite arriving a bit harried, directly from the airport (due to flight delays). We wanted to practice our rusty French, and Catherine was game! We learned so much about cheese and enjoyed every bite. I highly recommend this tour!

Tasty Food Tour for the Whole Family

Our family of 4 had a wonderful food tour with Gelsomina. She took us to some wonderful spots that suited kids and vegetarians...everyone got to experience new foods and was completely satiated by the end of the tour. She was great with the kids and even got my 12-year-old son to eat snails for the first time. Highly recommend touring with Gelsomina!

HUGE disappointment! Our guide never showed up & we got no communication that she cancelled on us.

Terrible experience. We were so excited for this tour-we didn’t eat breakfast, had to get up early because we were still dealing with jet lag, had to Uber 25 min, and our guide didn’t show up. I messaged her on WhatsApp & she never responded. After waiting 30 min, I spent another 30 min trying to get in touch with someone & finally was able to speak to so Some who said our guide had to cancel last minute due to personal issues. But we received NO communication from anyone letting us know this. I was only told after stressing & calling multiple numbers. We wasted our entire morning on this $530 private food tour & we were told “you’ll get a refund”. Glad for that but so much of our day was wasted & we had to spend a lot for the 25 min Uber trip to get there and then more to get back. HUGE disappointment.

Great food tasting experience in Paris!!!

Our family had a wonderful experience with our guide. We had a great assortment of foods in the market as our guide described Paris culture to us in terms of how they viewed and approached meals and how they would eat particular kinds of foods and how that differs some from our culture in the US. We then sampled multiple wines before finishing up with deserts from 3 different local eateries. It was a delightful experience and our was very helpful, patient, and kind throughout.

Take this class!

If you love cheese, love France, and simply love learning new things, you will love spending a couple hours with Cathrine in this class! She explains the major cheeses and cheese regions, how the various cheeses are made, the history behind them, how they pair with wine and other foods, and gives generous tastings along the way. Accompanied by baguettes from the local boulangerie and wines that partner nicely, this is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon in Paris away from the touristy spots and busy museums!

Great Experience

Gelsomina was wonderful, she took us to a local market where we had some wonderful oysters, cheese and tapenade and then took us to get some sweets and some savory crepes and macarons. She was super knowledgeable about the area and had a lot of great tips for the rest of our trip. So glad we got to have such a great guide!

Great tour of France via cheese

We are extremely pleased with our cheese tasting with Catherine. She guided us all over France, letting us taste cheeses from various regions and explaining how the cheeses differ based on the local climate, culture, and traditions. And all the cheeses were delicious.

Great Food Tour

Alpha delight

We met Alpha in a beautiful little park just next to the Bastillie. We were 5 family members, age group 40-70 years old, hungry for a food experience. First, we were lucky that the local street marked was open and that we met up close to the food hall - so that was our first stop. Cheese, snails and wine. Next we walked to a local boulangerie were Alpha picked up a sweet surprise which she shared with us on our walk to le Marais. Alpha is very outgoing, knowledgeable and flexible- as we passed places we wanted to see which was not in her plan, but made it possible anyway. We walked, talked and sat down for drinks and food during our tour and every memeber of the family was very happy with their experience. We recommend Alpha as your guide as she adapts fast to the group and their needs as well as she has a plan to give you the best food experience.

It was fine.

We were late arriving to Paris and our guide was accommodating. He was very kind and a great conversationalist. However, this was a very disorganized process. I was anticipating being guided and there being an itinerary but instead we were spent a fair amount of time deciding where to go. It was underwhelming.

Absolutely book Alpha K as your food guide. She’s just a pleasure to be with. So patient and really listens to what you want when it comes to designing your food your. She was punctual, knowledgeable and friendly. She really made my group’s experience one of a kind. We loved Paris and it’s food and we loved Alpha K!

Cheese tasting experience Paris: With Locals

Catherine was not only extremely knowledgeable about the cheeses of France but also a wonderful host to spend the afternoon with. We tasted 7 totally different cheeses from all over France while eating baguette and sipping a delicious wine. She was fun to be with but also very supportive. I made an error regarding our tasting time but rather than giving up on us, she attempted to contact us several times and ultimately waited for us to make sure we were able to do a tasting. We are so thankful she did as the whole experience was great. Sometimes it’s hard to find things to do as a mum with an 18 year old son on a trip, but my son rated this as his number one experience this weekend. Thank you so much
