Fascinating visit to the Spice Market with Batul

Really interesting visit to the Spice Market with Batul, who was so knowledgeable about the uses of the various spices and the practices of choosing, buying, roasting and grinding the spices for each family. A great experience.

A lovely, knowledgeable guide with excellent English skills

Batul is a friendly, happy, and knowledgeable guide. We very much enjoyed visiting the Spice market and spending time in a Spice shop learning about all the spices, touching and smelling spices we were no familiar with. The thieves market was far less interesting. The area is being transformed from old buildings with store fronts to new high rise residents. The market is mostly junky products. Its time to find another second destination to go with the thieves market.

Great trip to the Spice Market

Batul was a great guide. The driver picked us up promptly at our hotel and we met her at the spice market. She explained the spices to us and helped us purchase some. We also went to the Thieves market.

Spice Market Tour & Thieves Market

A brilliant way to spend the afternoon, Batul our guide was a true foodie. We saw spices and she explained how they were used, so bright, fresh and aromatic. She helped us source some of the spices we wanted to take home, no pressure at all to buy anything. Whole bag full for only £8. She introduced us to some new fruits and vegetables from the custard apple to the green chick pea and some delicious roasted nuts. The Thieves Market was super interesting too. Everything from vintage roller skates to old Bollywood posters, a treasure trove of trinkets. We felt infills informed and safe throughout. Batul’s enthusiasm was infectious and left us inspired to experiment and create a little bit of Bombay’s spice magic in our own kitchen.

Spice Tour and Chor. Bazaar

Batul, our guide, is a delight. We started our tour with an in-depth discussion on different chilis and learned so much about the history and complexity of the spices used in this part of India. Anyone who likes to cook and eat should go on this tour. We also visited Chor Bazaar where she was equally knowledgeable and interesting. She clearly loves doing these tours and it’s clear how much she loves Mumbai. Highly recommend.

If you are in Mumbai you MUST DO THIS tour. Our guide Adi went above and beyond bringing us through markets, chatting with locals, and showing us the working underbelly of Mumbai. Spice and antique markets with Kinjal

Had a terrific tour with Kinjal. She was flexible to accommodate us with our schedule, for which we appreciated. Kinjal was extremely knowledgeable about the markets and the area. She told terrific stories to give us some background history. Highly recommend Kinjal.

Heer was the best guide to the Spice Market and Thieves Market!

Awesome tours of Mumbai

We were fortunate to have KP (Krupesh Pandya) as our guide in Mumbai for 2 consecutive days. He is a very knowledgeble young man who was eager to personalize our experience in Mumbai. Our first tour day was Bold Spices and Thieves Market. We tasted various spices and mixes. We observed how the chili mixes were customized and then mechanically pounded to a dry powder. We were treated to tasty Chai Masala. The merchants were more than willing to have us taste Indian snacks. My husband collects football jerseys from around the world, and KP found a store to make that request happen! The second day was a Colonial Fort Walk. We visited the Asiatic Society and got a historical perspective of Mumbai while sitting on the steps of this iconic building. We also visited the 300 yr old St Thomas Cathedral from which all destination distances were measured. We relaxed in an Irani café and enjoyed Chai with some local pastries. Again, we heartily recommend No Footprints company and specifically Kuresh Pandya for a wonderful experience in Mumbai

Experience friendly Guide, relaxed pace tour

6 of us did a group Viator spice markets and Bazaar Tour in Mumbai our guide was Aman Wallia from Footprints tours & trainee Kinjal with Abhijeet our driver. First we were off to the Bhendi bazaar ‘thieves market’ at bohrimohalla an area of Bori Muslims. They wear their identifiable special clothing as in the photos. We had time for a speciality Chai, Masala Chai or Vanilla etc or mine was a Date Chai called Kahjoor Chaai. Then shopping and looking at the many antique and junk shops here. I may have bought a couple of items 😀😀 Then onto the Spice Market at Shree Ganash Nagar, Lalbaug, Mumbai where you give the spice merchants your ‘spice recipe’, they fill it, fry it in coconut oil briefly and then it’s ground, sifted and ground again etc until ready for the waiting customer. It doesn’t take long to wait. We got to try our hand at cooking the spices plus making Masala Chai Tea in the street stalls here which was a wonderful experience. Greg may have bought some spices ha ha

Informative, relaxed and enjoyable

We really enjoyed Aman’s excellent knowledge during our Spice Market and Bazaar tour today. The pace was relaxed as we had plenty of time to tour plus try our hand at cooking the spices, making Chai Tea, enjoying a cup of Chai and wandering around the bazaar too with plenty of time to shop. We would highly recommend this tour and Aman as your tour guide.

Unique Spice Experience

Not just a place to buy spices, but where people come from all over to purchase their families' specific traditional masala blends, a fascinating process from seeing the whole spices being blended and roasted, to the piston machines which pulverize them. Derrick is a font of knowledge who brings the history of Bombay to life. Excellent tour all around!

Great & enthusiastic tour guide

Adi was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable & enthusiastic We particularly enjoyed the tour around the old market place & watching the car dismantling at work! He was also extremely good at knowing when. Where & how to take amazing photos. We had a 2nd tour of the highlights of Mumbai & again amazed at what we saw Thoroughly enjoyed & recommend this tour

Don’t miss the stories from Disha!

The tour was so beautiful! Disha was super kind and took care of us from start to finish. While in the car she explained a bit the history of Mumbai and its commercial origins. We went to see the spice market in the morning and walked some beautiful little streets. Then we went to see the main station, and then the Gateway of India. We then had a super nice afternoon tea at the Taj. Disha told us a really lovely poem in front of the former Mumbai yacht club, and taught us some words in local language. Thank you Disha! Friendly, well-organised tour

We had a wonderful tour. Everything about it went extremely smoothly - timings and transport were perfect. The guide (Pooja) was funny, friendly and very knowledgeable. The markets were extremely interesting - I learned a lot about Mumbai.

Fantastic!

We really enjoyed our tour to the Chor Bazaar and Spice Market. Pooja, our guide was great fun and made the tour really relaxed but she was also a fountain of knowledge and gave a great insight into the lives of the people of Mumbai. We are just sad we are not here for longer as we would have loved to have experienced some of the other tours, especially Mumbai by dawn. Highly recommended!

Tours in Mumbai with Krupesh

We also did the British colonial heritage walk. Both of these tours were done with Krupesh as our guide. The spice market was unique and we got to learn more about Indian spices and how they are purchased and ground. The Thieves Market was a lively experience. Even if you have seen other markets in India, these are different enough to be worthwhile. The Heritage walk was an interesting way to fill in some free time in Mumbai. Krupesh was an excellent guide. He was very friendly, his English was top-notch and he went out of his way to be flexible and adapt to fit around other experiences we had had and to avoid duplication. We would recommend that anyone looking for a tour in Mumbai ask for Krupesh as a guide.

A fascinating experience! Our guide, Adi Pai, was terrific — knowledgeable, introduced us to shopkeepers who told us more and gave us fair prices, and even followed up with links to websites with recipes, etc. You’ll love this tour of Mumbai markets that many visitors don’t get to see.

Diwali experience with the Pai family

Such a resplendent evening. True immersion in an authentic family Diwali celebration. They welcomed us with open arms and gracious hospitality. Not to mention tasty treats, history stories, hands-on Rangoli creation. And actual participation in the traditional offerings and blessings. A night to remember, that we will never forget!

Amazing

We spent a fantastic two days with anusha in Mumbai.. we toured the highlights of Mumbai and visited the hot spots ... but anusha brought everything to life with her knowledge and enthusiasm for her city. She took us for amazing food at Bombay canteen ... being foodies this just made our day as we shared a leisurely lunch with a new friend. We also visited the spice market and like other reviewers highly recommend visiting the dawn markets and finishing our day at dharavi.
