An okay tour of Dharavi.

Rahul went out of his way to be helpful in many ways. He’d assigned us another guide, but upon hearing that we’d specifically picked him given the reviews that mention him, he rearranged his schedule to accompany us. He kindly helped with my phone recharge as well, and was thoughtful and pleasant throughout the tour. He took us through the different sections of Dharavi, both commercial and residential, and provided light commentary along the way. Unfortunately, having done this tour a few years ago with a different company, we were disappointed by the lack of substance and knowledge imparted. We also paid extra for a 3-hour tour including Dhobhi Ghat, but that was merely getting out of the train, taking a couple photos, and hearing about it for a few minutes before we were back on our way. We were done with the full tour, meetup downtown to goodbyes, in 2 hours on the dot. At the end, Rahul welcomed us into his home and asked us to take a few minutes to leave the review, which may explain a lot of the glowing commentaries. Overall, he is a positive force in his neighborhood (particularly with schoolchildren for whom he arranges free teaching) and the money is for a good cause, which is why we have no regrets. Note, however, that most of the genuine Dharavi tours also give back a significant portion to their community.

Mind blowing how well the place works

What a relief to hear our guides first words in clear english and also be able to ask questions and be understood. He knew almost everyone we passed as he lives there and I felt completely safe as we worked our way through an absolute maze of narrow laneways and tiny businesses. It completely changed my view of a place to avoid to a place where they all look after each other.

This was a very rich and insightful tour with Rahul. He grew up in Dharavi and led us through the commercial and residential parts of Dharavi including areas which would be otherwise inaccessible to non residents. Rahul provided us with an excellent tour around the Dharavi Slum giving us an Insight to life in the community. As a resident himself he was able to educate us on the history, the day to day life of those living within and also the political and educational aspect of life in the area. Rahul's spoke perfect english, and along with his driver Sagar who collected us and dropped us back to the hotel, the whole experience was incredibly professional and well organised. We were also lucky enough to be taken to Rahuls house at the end of the tour and visit him home also and meet his family. Dharavi Slum Tour Review

Rahul was an excellent guide who provided amazing stories and facts about Dharavi. Being a local, he was able to take us into special areas that you wouldn’t see normally. I highly recommend Rahul and be prepared to be humbled by the amazing experience.

Interesting experience of life in the slums.

We had a great tour with our guide Sagar. He lead us through the plastic recycling, leather and pottery industries. He also showed us his home to give us an idea of how a family lives in Dharavi. Would be an interesting trip for foreigners out of India but as Indians it was interesting but not surprising to see the lives of locals. Would recommend for international foreigners.

A bit of a back story- we’d booked a shore excursion with Mystical Mumbai but they did not show up to meet us. As we stood there waiting and texting, a very helpful young man named Rahul came up to inquire if we needed help. As it turned out, he knew our tour operator and arranged with them to be our guide to the Dharavi slum. The tour was extremely interesting. Rahul was totally at ease guiding us through the narrow alleys and dealing with the locals. For anyone concerned about feeling ‘voyeuristic’, that was not the case at all. The people, especially the children, were friendly and as curious as we were. No one tried to beg or sell things- quite different than in most of the rest of Mumbai. I highly recommend Rahul and thank him again for saving our day.

Interesting and moving

Having a first hand account of life in the area was very incite full. Our guide was Rahul who still lives in Dharavi. He told us all about the industry there and showed us how people live. The children there only wanted to high five us and were generally lovely

Worth visiting

It was interesting and very informative tour. I knew that Dharavi makes a lot of money annually but didn’t know details. Our guide Rahul kindly answered all questions and explained how it works. Spoiler: Dharavi is not just an average slum but a huge manufacturing plot. During tour you’ll see few manufacturers including impressive plastic recycling spots. Rahul said it’s not entertainment but educational tour, so it was. The place is definitely worth visiting.

Dharavi Leather & Plastic Tour

This was a great experience that added tremendously to my time in Mumbai. Roy made the area accessible and was informative and patient with us. This is an experience many of us should have, especially if you are accustomed to shopping online, use plastic items and wonder how it all comes together (in other words, almost anyone reading this!). I learned that Roy also runs his own NGO and could have spent more time with him.

Perfect tour guide

Rahul / Roy was a fantastic guide. To get a well-rounded perspective of life in Mumbai we thought it was important to visit Dhavari but without his guidance and direction it wouldn’t have been possible. Highly recommended for well-informed experience that is discrete and not overly ‘touristy’, while giving an opportunity for your fee to directly contribute to the slum and Roy’s family who reside there.

Great tour!

I definitely recommend this slum tour! It was a very interesting experience to see this city within a city. Our guide Rahul was very knowledgeable and told us about how everything works within the slum. It was amazing to see all the business and manufacture that was happening within the slum. I was very surprised at how organised everything was, and how much was happening inside the slum. Seeing how the people lived there was also very interesting. Without a knowledgeable guide like Rahul the experience would not have been so great. As well as the slum tour, I did a city tour of the biggest points of interest. Not to be missed!

Me and my boyfriend just went on the Dharavi slum tour and it was amazing. Our tour guide Rahul was really great, so kind and friendly and very knowledgable having grown up in the Dharavi slum himself. He was more than happy answering all our questions and there was no question he couldn’t answer. His English is also fantastic. He arranges and runs local teaching classes for those living and working in the slum and so the money goes towards supporting the local community. The whole tour was fantastic and eye opening, it was one of the best things we’ve done in India. We couldn’t have asked for more from our tour. If you are in Mumbai make sure you don’t leave before going on this tour!

Amazing Tour

I recently did the slum tour with Rahul. It was absolutely amazing and one of the best things I’ve done in India. Rahul was so informative and professional, you couldn’t get a better tour guide. Rahul grew up in Dharavi and still lives there so he knows it really well. Some of the money for the tour is also given back to the community and and local school. I really can’t recommend the tour enough!!!

Very inspiring and educational

The tour was an incredibly eye opening experience. My tour guide Sid was very knowledgeable and his English was great. Had a great experience with Vishal. Booked a tour for 1.5 hours, but since we were so interested in many things, he took time to explain. We ended up staying 4 hours in dharavi , which was very enriching. Highly recommended

Not what I expected - much better!

I highly recommend the slum tour. It was the highlight of my visit to Mumbai. This area is full of hardworking people and families doing the best they can with what they have. It was very safe (although not very visually appealing). Make sure you have Vishal or other guide take you to get some tea made by Mahindra (I think that's his name!). It was the best ginger tea I had during my entire stay in India.

Great Private Dharavi Slum Tour and Street Food Tour

We had a fantastic experience with Young Tours and Travel as our tour guides in our short trip to Mumbai! As it was our first time visiting India we spent a lot of time on the first morning researching different tours... however this tour company stood out as not only were they quick in responding but also able to cater to what we wanted and offered lots of information! So we booked two tours... both the Private street food tour and the private Dharavi slum tour. The first evening we were picked up by our guide Rahul and his driver and drove directly to our first stop to try some Masala Chai... which was amazing! We learned so much from Rahul about Mumbai and all the different foods and it was wonderful trying all the different types of foods! We stopped at over 6 different places to sample a variety of street foods. As food lovers... we were in paradise! The following day we were collected and driven to the Dharavi slum where we spent a few hours with Rahul again learning about the various industries and residential areas. It was really informative and our tour ended with a visit to Rahul’s home where we were given some more Masala chai and met his family. Thank you very much to Young Tours and Travel for a fantastic two days, which we will always remember! When we return to Mumbai in the future, we will be sure to contact for another tour! I was worried that my tour would be annoying and disrespected to those living there. Tour was mostly I the industrial areas and guide was clear in boundaries as to not be rude. Great tour and you have a chance buy leather goods to support the slums economy.

Awesome experience by and with a real and authentic local

Did the tour just today and my group tour turned out to be a private one which was the first great thing. Tour guid, Vishal, is awesome and really takes his time to tailor make your tour!
