Trip to a Bollywood Studio out of many existing in Mumbai

We enjoyed watching two shootings of different sets of series shown on TV on weekly basis. We met the main actors/actresses for these sets. We toured all the film sets the site has to use for the shootings. I also had chance to sing a song of my choice (karoke) in the studio. Lastly the dance show was good, could have helped to be in a larger venue as the place was very small .

Not as expected

I’m unsure if we went on the right day, we were told by our guide as it’s a Sunday, Not all four studios were in use. We toured a very antiquated building with very old room sets. We did see an Indian TV show being filmed outside and appreciated the level of input provided by the filming crew. The last hour of the tour did get better, we watched 4 dancers, dressed up and had access to a recording studio to sing our own recording. We booked the dance option and lunch, we didn’t even get a bottle of water. We did a city tour for a third of the price with another company which was excellent. Perhaps our expectations of a Bollywood tour were too high. Based on the price this by Indian standards is poor value for money . I’m an avid tripadvisor reviewer and appreciate differences in opinion and others must have seen something we didn’t. There were 6 in our party with all different expectations, but we came away with the same conclusion,

We had an exceptionnaly good guide, professional and knowledgable. The studio with live action and walking round the sets was inspiring. Also the driver made us feel safe and the drive through town with explanations was enjoyable.

Gritty authentic Bollywood industry insights

We had a great experience with Rahul and appreciate how genuine, experienced and communicative he was. He's got deep local knowledge and lots of insights about the realities of local life, the film industry, the context of series that are shot there, and the specific ways sets and productions are created. We happened to be there during filming of a bank heist and I enjoyed seeing my first "action" sequence up close with fake blood and guns 🥳 definitely glad we signed up for the dance option: 4 very experienced dancers with a repertoire of moves including my favourite "it's the time to disco". I left with a deeper appreciation of the gritty realities of hard hustling that makes Bollywood glamour possible

Informative and entertaining

We had a blast! 5 live shoots or in between shoot preparations (we had a lucky day) and 4 live dances ( 4 dancers dance on a very small stage). Shuaib, our guide explained many details and made sure we had a good time.

Bollywood Sets/Filming/Shuaib

Went with Shuaib and he did a fantastic job of showing me and my friends everything we wanted to see. He always had an answer to every question we had regarding film, Mumbai, or just anything related to Bollywood. Highly recommend him as a tour guide if you sign up for this tour. As a film production major in the U.S, I was geeking out! So much fun!

Incredible experiences of Bollywood world

We fully enjoyed half day Bollywood Tour. When we arrived, it was like old factory. When we got in, we saw incredibly different world. Tour guide showed us around the film studio. We have never experienced such wonderful tour. We highly recommend taking Bollywood Tour to visitors to Mumbai.

Incredible bollywood experience

I booked the tour for me and my two teens who are bollywood fans. Garments was our guide who picked us up at our hotel. He was very kind and polite and showed us shootings at the studio sets and also got us pictures with famous tv screen actors. And we enjoyed the dance show, sound recording and videos about history of bollywood. He treated us to great food and brought us back to the hotel. Tips about Mumbai activities were also much appreciated. All in all, we truly enjoyed the tour and would definitely recommend it to everyone visiting mumbai for the first time.

Fabulous experience

The tour was so much fun. We watched some live filming and visited multiple sets. The guides were very helpful. The entertainment show was amazing. Good opportunities to take photos throughout the trip. I would highly recommend this tour.

Excellent tour Bollywood studio

Gurmit the guide was very knowledgeable of Bollywood and it's stars. He enabled us to see behind the scenes filming, he seemed to be very familiar with the studios. We also enjoyed seeing and taking part in the dancing. Kamdev the driver was also excellent.

Interesting tour

A good tour to see and learn about the behind the scenes of Bollywood movies and shows. Saw a couple of live productions and some Bollywood stars.

Friendly, Informative Tour

Our guide Kamlesh and his driver picked up my friend and I from our hotel. Kamlesh was full of information about Mumbai and encouraged us to ask questions about the city. We learned a lot about Mumbai on our drive to the Bollywood area. Upon arrival, Kamlesh took us onto an empty production stage and explained a bit about the craft of moviemaking and other kinds of entertainment. He then took us to a live set, where we watched a bit of filming on a daily TV show. We walked through several sets as Kamlesh gave us more information. Eventually we met up with others and watched a film about Bollywood history and learned more about the business. We enjoyed posing with hats and costumes on, and joined in a Bollywood style dance. The half day tour was a lot of fun and most informative. Kamlesh is a very friendly and welcoming guide, and I would be happy to have him escort me on any tour in India.

Awesome full day of food, Bollywood and shopping

We had Rahul for a private tour of SJ Studios, where we had a customized tour from our hotel to do both a street food tour and a Bollywood tour. We had a blast he was smart and funny and took us to great street food locations that as foreigners we could eat at safely and there was always .ore than enough food for us to eat, he took us to a great tour of the studio where we saw two shows being filmed and a third one being prepped. We saw the dance number with four dances which was fun and got a chance to see the entire studio. We finished off with even getting a chance to go through a few of the bazaar areas of zhaveri, mangaladas and Crawford market so we could see what that was like. It was a great tour, Rahul was awesome and we would highly recommend.

A great insight into the world of Bollywood

The tour was good fun - we saw a range of film sets, live shooting of soap operas, entertaining Bollywood dancing and got to try on costumes. An excellent insight into the world of Bollywood and also got an opportunity to record some action shots and singing! Our guide Kamlesh was also excellent - very knowledgable, personable and well organised on the day itself. Would recommend!

Fantastic fun!

We had a fantastic half day at the studio. Our tour guide and driver picked us up at the hotel and did a great job all through the tour. Thoroughly enjoyed the audio booth, dancing and seeing the sets. Remember - nothing is real (apart from how good the tour guide is!). Would definitely recommend to friends and family of they're visiting Mumbai - great fun.

So much fun!

Wonderful tour! We looked around the film sets, watched a live scene being shot and learnt a lot about the history of film and special effects. The highlights were definitely recording ourselves sing in the booth and we watched (and danced) with some love performers! Smiled throughout the day, wonderful tour.

An enjoyable tour, but rather expensive for what it is

Overall, an afternoon well spent visiting a 'Bollywood' studio. We arranged to pay on the day, rather than book in advance as our schedule was subject to change. We were picked up at our hotel by a driver, although our guide arrived late. Nevertheless, after over an hour negotiating Mumbai traffic we arrived at S.J. Studios. Our guide was really informative and clearly passionate about her job, reeling off facts and figures about popular soaps and the 'Bollywood' film industry in general. In a nutshell the tour consists of watching some actual filming, visits to various sets, recording a song 'karaoke-style' in a small sound booth and finally watching a 'Bollywood' dance routine where you get the opportunity to join in and dance with the professionals. Lunch was also included in our tour. At the time of our visit the cost of the tour was ₹9200 each - more or less £184 for two of us, which to be honest, is rather overpriced for what it actually is and on that basis not worth it.

Okay, needed more from tour guide

It was interesting to see some sets and filming. We arrived after a 2 hour taxi ride, which was a lot more than expected. We were pushed into a sound studio immediately and told to sing. That was unexpected. More context would have been very useful. We eventually got an intro video, but the experience felt unpolished. Lunch was at a local cafe, but we didn't know how to order and needed more guidance. Overall, it was a 3 of 5.

Very expensive and disappointing : not worth it

I did the half-day Bollywood tour with Dance and was very disappointed with the overall experience given the high price that I paid (200$ CAD). I think the simple tour of the studio itself could be interesting if you have never been on a film set - must be lucky though, when I was there they were shooting in a small room and I didn't get go in and see any "action" :( Although my guide was not punctual (had to wait for her about an hour), she was interesting and nice. But everything else around the tour itself (hotel pick-up, dance, lunch, karaoke, tour of some stars' houses...) is really not interesting and definitely not worth paying extra. I fully agree with "StillLoveTravelling"'s review ("waste of time and money")

Waste of time and money

Given that we had only three days in Mumbai (so time was precious) had we known the travel time to the studios would be 2+1/2hrs, we would definitely not have done this tour. The guide, Pooja, was charming and very good to talk to about the city and culture. But SJ Studios was tiny and very tatty; we are familiar with European studios and these were not comparable. The ‘standing’ sets - a police station and jail that we saw in semi-darkness as Pooja couldn’t find the house lights, and an office, were underwhelming. But the big let-down was the main reason for the tour - seeing a shoot. Apparently this wasn’t possible. So really a pointless trip. We were then taken to a small viewing theatre and shown three short videos, which looked as though they were from the 1980’s. One was a puff-piece for SJ Studios! These were interspersed with dance performances by a troupe of 4 - I did feel for them, trying their best in a tiny space, but not what we expected. The tour included lunch, which was pleasant but not worth a round trip of 4+1/2hrs and 18,400IR. Left feeling ripped off.

Really cool and in-depth

A wonderful tour for a Bollywood buff! We chose the tour without dancing, so we went to an outdoor studio. We toured an active studio with a knowledgable guide and got to see live filming of two projects (a soap and a movie)! It's also really cool to walk around and see all the different touches that go into a movie - from the lighting crew to the painters working on small set pieces. Don't come in with unrealistic expectations of what movie filming looks like and you'll have a good time.

A good way to spend some time.

If this would have been our first tour in India, I might have actually given it less stars, but having been on multiple tours, and having a better understanding of the overall conditions in India, having never been here before, it was not that bad. Basically, don’t expect to see glitz and glamour. The studio that we went to was basically only used for filming TV shows. They show you a lot of posters and videos of major Bollywood movies, none of which were filmed there. They don’t tell you that, and the assumption is that major movies were filmed there, but from our minimal research, we don’t believe any major Bollywood movies were filmed at this particular studio. It just seems that this studio is the one that gives the most tours. Anyway, our tour guide was very nice and showed us all the rooms that they supposedly film in and we did actually get to see the filming of two different daytime TV shows which was fun. If we were actually from India and watched these shows on a regular basis, I would imagine it would be quite a big deal to see the stars of these TV shows up close. It’s a good way to spend some time with the family, and to just see another part of the culture.

Super fun intro to Bollywood

Really fun day with Lawrence and Akshay. My first intro to Bollywood and I learned so from Lawrence who really knows the ins and outs of the studio and all kind of interesting facts. I even recorded my own track!!!! They were so thoughtful to my experience and we started with a tour of Mumbai homes of the stars. I would highly recommend Lawrence and Akshay to anyone who wants to see what a real day at the “office” is for tv and film making. We saw live shoots, sets and all the little details you never realize are happening with tv and movies. Plus local knowledge of the stars, movie recs, and the role Bollywood plays in Mumbai! Thanks Lawrence and Akshay!

Bollywood tour - wonderful

Thank you to our guide, Suraj, for making this tour such fun. The bus picked us up right on time from our hotel in Nariman Point and Suraj pointed out landmarks on the way. We stopped at SRK house which was a highlight for us as big fans. The studio tour was great with a dance program. Suraj helped us through our song recording as we picked a Hindi song that even with karaoke we couldn’t sing. Lunch was superb at a nice restaurant unlike some of the other tours that give a small snack at the studio. I highly recommend this tour for any Bollywood fan and definitely ask for Suraj!

Mr Bowden

Excellent tour walking round the sets of Indian soap operas and films. We got to see a soap opera being filmed and rehearsing for a live reality competition show. The tour ended with some history of the set and dancers dancing then it was our turn to join in . Highly recommended a fun half day trip. Actors have a lunch break 2pm try and avoid this time as not much live action.

Fantastic Bollywood Studio experience!

My sister and I went on this terrific half-day tour. We had a great time and highly recommend it. Our driver, Akshay, was nice and a good driver. And our tour guide, Suraj, was outstanding and very friendly. He knew his way around all the studios, took great videos and was a lot of fun. We enjoyed our tour!

Not worth! Avoid!

Visited December 2019. Picked at the hotel at 11.00AM. Visited old building between nothing in Mumbai. Then guide show us some old old rooms decorated like living room, kitchen, then hospital and court, jail. Amd some guys that filming some soup nothing. Then he took us to dubbing "studio". And then in small hall with about 12 seats for "private show" included 4 movie clips and 4 dances. After the grand finalle lunch in a local restaurant. I guess that normal price of 10€ for that great experience is ok, but a 100€...???

Beware of The Bollywood Sting

We booked a Bollywood tour which was billed as "The heart of India-Bollywood" through or hotel concierge, " an outstanding chance to witness a live shoot in progress, truly unforgettable in Mumbai known as the film city" We were collected by a driver from our hotel for a journey that took just over one hour. We arrived at what at its best was a building site with very small rooms where 4 dancers did 3 or 4 minutes Indian dancing? we then saw a 3 minute shoot for a so called Indian soap which was directed in any way, just people with cameras and half a dozen so called actors playing a scene for the shoot. From there four of us went into a Karaoke session which was supposed to be recorded but there were no replays and finally my wife was dressed up in a Sari and presented with a Bollywood oscar. I confronted the guide at the end and told him I was not happy and that I was going to ask the hotel for a refund when we returned. Upon arriving at the hotel I was greeted by the Concierge and immediately given my money back without any demand

Wonderful Experience

This half-day tour was really very interesting, the driver took me to visit the houses of the most famous actors and the street where all the celebrities live in mumbai was really very kind and cordial. As for the guide, in addition to being very precise in the explanations, he showed me in detail all the places where the filming of the films was shot and I was lucky enough to also see a shot of a film that will be released soon. Driver and guide two very kind, friendly and nice people, absolutely to recommend.

Great tour!

I enjoyed my tour, which picked me up from my hotel and showed me around a film set, and the houses of celebrities. My tour guide Asmita was very friendly and helpful. This is a good tour if you want to get the hang of Bollywood, but don’t have too much time to spare.

Bollywood 1/2 day tour with lunch

This was an excellent use of my time on my last day in India. My guide, Asmita, was knowledgable, well-prepared, confident, and kept me fully entertained. The tour surprised with how the glitzy shows we see on tv and film are actually made in some really simple and cluttered places! We were lucky enough to be there for an episode of “Yeh hai muhobatein” tv serial while they were on break, and I saw/heard Karan Patel in person! Also saw some other actress walking from one building to another with someone holding an umbrella over her head (to shield from the hot sun). The various sets while not in use were fascinating. Their sound editing and dubbing room was amazing. I’ll never view a movie with the same eye again! A live show at the end was beautiful too. Asmita’s choice of our restaurant for lunch was great too. The only negative point is that while it is called “half day”, it ends up being a full day because of the 1.5 hr drive to and from the SJ Studios. Allow 9:45am to 5:00 pm. Overall one of the experiences you must get while in India.

don't take this tour

Bollywood tour was a waste of time and money. The tour is of previously used production sets. At each stop of the bus, the tour guide plays a short movie clip of how the set was used. We saw no live filming or even rehearsals. Once the bus passed a few actors in costume. For the record Bollywood sound stages are in a jungle in the suburbs of Mumbai. The jungle is littered with trash and animals grazing on the trash. We certainly could have made better use of our limited time in Mumbai.

Interesting look behind the scenes

The proprietor is very flexible and helpful and so first he arranged for me and my partner to be picked up directly on arrival from Mumbai airport and taken directly to studios - this saved us having to fight our way through the traffic to get to our south Mumbai hotel and then sitting in traffic heading north again to studios. We were met at the airport by our guide Gurmit and his driver Vikkram in a tourist car with a/c and they were both instantly likeable and hospitable hosts. We were first taken around various sets and got to see two separate scenes of a popular daily sitcom being filmed. We also got to see six Bollywood dances performed by 4 dancers in beautiful costumes and we were allowed to take part near the end of the last one. After each couple of dances there was interesting film footage shown about the history of Bollywood. We were then taken to a lovely restaurant serving very nice food and gorgeous tasting desserts. We then drove to see the homes of a number of Bollywood stars which was brought to life by our guide. Afterwards we stopped off to have pictures at the I Love Mumbai sculpture and then stopped off to see a ghat (outside laundry). Because of Eid we got caught up in festival traffic and the festival road closures meant we had a very ‘interesting’ journey through narrow back streets. Our driver was very patient in getting us unstuck from the situation and Gurmit always friendly and interesting and so despite the extra time it took to get back to our hotel, it was all part of an experience we will never forget. I would give 4.5 if I could but not 5 because I guess ultimately we would have liked to have seen an actual Bollywood star or Bollywood movie bring filmed but this can’t be guaranteed. I think as it saved us an airport transfer and we had a lovely meal and a lovely host and driver to make us feel safe and welcome in Mumbai, it wasn’t too bad value for money and we did see Indian tv stars, it’s just we only know the big Bollywood stars - had we seen one, we’d give the 5/5 rating.

Great Bollywood studio tour with Lawrence

Great afternoon on a private tour with Lawrence - he is wealth of knowledge. I admittedly don't know much about Bollywood, but enjoy learning about the entertainment industry, and this tour was ideal.

Good way to see Bollywood and learn about India's entertainment industry

This was a good way to see Bollywood and understand the entertainment side of India. I wish it would have included lunch, our guides told us lunch was not included so when we ended at 2PM we were quite hungry. There is only one studio one and it was so fun to watch the actors/filming of a tv drama.

<p>This was a well organised and informative tour, we were picked up at the cruise terminal on time and in a good car. It wasnt how we had imagined it , certainly a lot more gritty and less touristy which made it even more enjoyable for us. We had a great guide who was enthusiastic and helpful so when we said that we wanted to concentrate on the studio and not the stars houses etc he modified it for us. We had booked the tour for 2 people which cost a little bit more but was worth it as it could be tailored to our interests. There were 7 productions in progress while we were at the studio and we were able to creep on set and saw four of them going strong. There was loads of hustle and bustle and even the organised chaos in the outdoor area was exciting. We are both of us into film and stage which is why we chose it, also it was half the price of the identical tour run by the ship.</p>

A Great experience in Mumbai.

We recently experienced the tour facilities of Bollywood Tours in Mumbai, we had the fortune of having the same guide, Sufiyan for the three days we ventured on different tours. City Tour, Bollywood Tour and various market tours. Sufiyan was very professional, punctual and portrayed a sound knowledge of all areas of interest. He enhanced our Mumbai experience. Highly enjoyable and informative Bollywood tour

Great and knowledgeable tour guide (Sufiyan) as well as highly immersive experience. Visited famous Bollywood landmarks and were fortunate enough to experience live shooting of famous productions. There is also a very fun activity at the end! Would recommend both to individuals that are new to as well as already attuned to Bollywood.
