Multicultural Food Tour in Melbourne Markets

Great walkthrough of the market, def recommend

My tour ended up just being myself and the tour guide since it wasn't a busy travel season, and this was one of the highlights of my whole trip. My tour guide Anna was so sweet, I cannot stress enough how lucky I felt that I happened to book this tour! She was so insightful about the history of the market and how it continues to operate in the modern day. I really appreciated her perspective as a local and her eagerness to share what she knew about Melbourne. She even went out of her way to help recommend, based on my interests, places to visit and restaurants to eat at in the area. Although there are some specific stalls you visit, I feel like your experience is shaped by what you like and what you show interest in (and also probably, who your tour guide is!) I brought up as we passed a stall that I'd never had an actual Turkish delight, and she ended up buying a bag as an inclusion in the tour! I think the food that is usually included are a coffee, donuts form the infamous American Doughnut Kitchen, bureks (basically a savory or sweet stuffed pastry), an antipasto, and gelato. I didn't find the tour to be jam packed with food, it felt like a good amount just to try some stuff as you stroll around and learn about the market. You could certainly explore the market on your own, but this experience was exactly what I was looking for.

Great Victoria Market walk with tastings

Great walking Victoria Market tour with Tristan. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the market. We enjoyed great coffee & tastes of cheeses & meats, and finished with delicious gelato.

Great visit to the Queen Victoria Market!

Tristan did a fantastic job of showing us around the impressive Queen Victoria Market. From the complimentary coffee at the start to the cup of handmade gelato at the end, this excursion was full of food samples and introductions to many of the vendors who give the market its vibe.

Enjoyable and informative experience

Excellent, knowledgeable guide. Very hot but he made sure we were comfortable and not rushed at all. Enjoyed conversations and food samples from the traders. Overall an enjoyable and informative experience.

Basic Introduction to markets

Good introduction to the Victoria st markets however only a few tastings and not really value for money. Some knowledge gaps on what is at the markets.

pretty ordinary

We visited the South Melbourne markets because the Queen Victoria markets were not open that day. Our guide, Tristan said he was less familiar with these markets but reassured us that they were good to visit. The markets are definitely worth a visit but largely we felt we could have made our own way around them without a guide and would have had just as good a time. Apart from a small number of places where we were welcomed by the owners who talked to us about their businesses and showcased what they had to offer, most shops were just random visits without any pre-arranged presentations. Having done other food tours in Australia and overseas, we were left with the impression that, with more preparation and more dynamic delivery, the tour would have represented much better value for money. Overall, it was disappointing and definitely not value for money.

Long walk to the market unnecessary

It gave a different story to the market. I felt we could have seen more of the market. I fell the cost was a little high for what we did.

Disappointing and expensive!!!

The guide was highly knowledgeable in the history of the markets and Melbourne surrounds. The quality of the food offered for tasting was adequate but the variety and quantity was minimal. The tour meeting point was more than 30 minutes walk away from the venue. The cost and title of the tour was very misleading. Congratulations to Tristan for making the best out of a difficult and unrewarding food tour.

We enjoyed hearing about local identities and tastings of local food from vendors: magic Melbourne coffee, Greek, deserts teas, &Asian food…. All wonderful!

A great way to kick-off our stay in Melbourne!

We loved our tour of Queen Victoria Market led by Tristan! We scheduled this experience for our first full day visiting Melbourne and were so happy we did. Not only did we taste great food, but we learned so much about the market and found ourselves returning a few times over the course of the rest of our trip. It was a great way to orient ourselves. Awesome walking tour

Wasn’t to keen on doing this tour has we had already walked a lot of Melbourne a couple of days prior, I was wrong couldn’t believe how much more I hadn’t seen of Melbourne, Tristan was awesome and we learnt and saw so many different parts of the city if it wasn’t for the tour👍🏻

Great experience!

We did this tour a month ago, and had a great time! Our guide, Tristan, was very informative, and had lots of good recommendations for sights to see in Melbourne. On the tour itself, we got a good introduction to Melbourne's coffee culture, and got to sample a variety of other items from the market.

Informative and fun!

Kellie did an amazing job with our tour! She was pleasant and very informative. Even though we have been to the Victoria Market several times she gives us insights we did not know. We tasted a variety of things and definitely did not leave hungry. Even though the tour is a little pricey, I would definitely recommend, especially if you have Kellie as your guide!

South Melbourne Market Tour - Highly Recommend

My wife and I live in Sydney and have travelled to Melbourne a bunch of times so no the place quite well. However, after spending the morning with Sonja at the South Melbourne markets it opened our eyes to the true beauty of Melbourne. The market tour was an amazing experience and Sonja was a fantastic guide. She educated us on the history of the market (and Melbourne more broadly), took us to wonderful eateries and helped us explore the different cultures of the market/ city. We would highly recommend this tour and in particular Sonja as your guide :)

Would Recommend!

Our guide, Sonja, took us to the South Melbourne Market. Amazing! Full of great food options but also local crafts and other goods. Sonja was knowledgeable and brought us to a number of different types of vendors so we could try many different types of food. Great way to spend a cloudy/rainy morning in Melbourne. Wish I had a market like that where I lived!

Great experience

My son and I had a great time on this tour. Our guide Nicole is knowledgeable and pleasant. We get to taste gelato made fresh that morning, the awesome African smoked salmon... etc. I love listening to the vendors introducing their food - the love and pride in their tone make the gourmet even tastier! Highly recommend this tour to people visiting Melbourne.

Fabulous walking market tour

Our family of 4, including two teens - ages 16 & 17 had a wonderful tour of Queen Victoria Market with Tamara. She is a great guide with knowledge and personality. The amount of time was perfect - we loved the variety at the market and her stops and snacks were delightful! No need to eat breakfast before coming - honestly - you start with donuts and coffee and keep eating from there! An absolute must if you want to see the market!

Would recommend this short tour

Sonja was our tour guide who took us through Queen Victoria Market. She had a great knowledge base to draw from which made the time interesting and enjoyable. There was also a good variety of food included in the price, and the length of time adequate to give us a great overview of the market. Well worth the time and money.

If you want to experience Melbourne, it is highly recommended to take this tour. Our guide, Kellie, was so friendly and was very welcoming! She shared in our group why Melbournian's are very particular in their coffee. She also shared to us Melbourne's famous donuts, cheeses that are locally made, and gelatos. Once again, highly recommended.

Tour of Queen Victoria markets

Tristan was an excellent tour guide, and made the whole experience very relaxing, especially starting us of with a coffee, a lovely touch. We were so pleased to do the tour, as we had no idea of the size and huge array of stalls, shops and interesting produce on sale.

If you're in Melbourne this tour is a must! Not only do you get to go around the market getting a fascinating insight into the history of the city and all the different cultures that inhabit it, you also get to sample some amazing food! Our tour guide, Kellie, was extremely knowledgable about Melbourne and more than happy to answer any questions the group had. She also followed up the tour with an email with some recommendations for local cafes, restaurants and bars, which was a really nice touch. So get yourself booked on a tour, have a light breakfast and go sample some of the multicultural delights of Melbourne!

Great Food Great Local Businesses

The Multicultural Food Tour in the Melbourne Markets was one of our highlights. Our guide, Tamara was so friendly and welcoming. She took us to a variety of local small businesses that we were very happy to support. The locals were generous with their food sampling and were eager to share their knowledge. Their passion was infectious! We only wish we could have taken the Queen Victoria Markets back to the US. Word of advice: Don't eat before the tour, save your stomach for all the delicious local food that's there! Thank you to Tamara for a great tour and a wonderful day!

A wonderful experience

Great food and company!

I was in Melbourne for business and did the Market tour to get a brief feel for Melbourne before I left. Tristan was a knowledgeable guide with a great sense of humour. He took the time to introduce us to the individual vendors as we sampled lots of different foods. My favourite was the Spanish Deli and the coffee, delish. There was time to buy some gifts and have a drink at the end. I highly recommend 😊

A great way to start our visit in Melbourne!

Going on the Multicultural food tour was a great start to our first day in Melbourne! What made it even more special was our lovely tour guide...Kellie Birkett! Kellie was enthusiastic, humourous, conscientious, energetic, and friendly! Her professional and organized approach kept us engaged, moving along, while providing us with many opportunities to chat together, explore, and take a moment to follow up with something else relevant to us. Kellie prepared us well for each visit to a vendor and there was ample time to taste, ask questions and peruse. Kellie also followed up with any specific interests we showed such as at Merlo, the cheese vendor, and the African foods kiosk. Kellie was very proud of the vendors’ abilities to inform us of their products and history, and their connection with the market. She encouraged them to share some of the familial history in their product so we could understand the significance of their presence and ethnicity. As well it was obvious that Kellie was very much appreciated by the vendors and they treated her with kind respect, like that of good friends. Kellie let us into the market world and showed its relevance to the rest of Melbourne. She gave us a window into the ethnic foods that help to make Melbourne so special. Kellie is a wonderful ambassador for the Victoria Market and Melbourne!

A great intro to Melbourne

Our guide Kellie was so friendly and we felt very welcomed. Being the only 2 on the tour, we were so glad that it still went ahead! Kellie was really flexible about what we did and asked us if we were interested in seeing anywhere in particular. She guided us through the Queen Victoria markets and we had heaps of food tastings which were delicious (the donuts were an absolute hit!). We had a fantastic tour and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get their bearings and learn a bit about the city. A fun day!

We had a great tour with multiple different types of foods. They were mindful of the vegetarian in our group and Shmick had a friendly, easy personality. Highly recommended!

Fabulous tour of Melbourne CBD

I was the only one on the tour but they didn't cancel it thank goodness. Rather I got to choose what we did and so I had a brilliant tour of Melbourne city as well as a visit to the Queen Vic market with some tasting. My guide Nick was really professional and knowledgable about the history of Melbourne and its significant buildings as well as some of its hidden gems. It was a really interesting and enjoyable morning. I would highly recommend this tour company.

A great day out for everyone

We had a great day with our guide, Tristan. We had 4x children in tow and there was something for everyone. We loved the local knowledge and tastings and will definitely recommend this tour to others. After our tour we return to the market again before heading home.

Show up hungry

This was a great tour of the South Melbourne Market. We ate our way through, sampling local foods. Tour guide was excellent. Incredibly knowledgeable. Food - from dim sims to indigenous spices - was amazing. At the end I was stuffed!

Fun, interesting, and delicious!

Our group had a great time with Tristan exploring the South Melbourne market. Tristan was very knowledgeable about the market and seemed to have a good relationship with many of the vendors there. We had a variety of things to try, and all of them were fantastic. I appreciated that we were able to get a local person's perspective of Melbourne.

Southern Market Multicultural Food Tour

We had a wonderful time with our guide Tristin. He was very knowledgeable and personable. You always wonder if these food tastings will fill you up but we can tell you there was plenty of food for us. We were stuffed! There was a variety of food choices from different cultures. Tristan picked the best places to taste food/drink. My favorite foods were the dim sim and meat pies. My favorite drinks were the chai milk drink and squash soda. We highly recommend taking this food tour with Tristan. He even gave us recommendations for places to eat in Melbourne which we did try and enjoyed.

Enjoyable experience

Nice tour. Got to try different foods in the QVB and was given background/history on the stalls in the market. Vendors were friendly too. Tamara was a fantastic guide. She was knowledgeable, personable and friendly.

Excellent tour of Queen Victoria Market

My husband and I really enjoyed our market tour. The tour started with a delicious coffee and continued with jerky, cheese, nuts, a donut and a few other treats before we ended the morning with gelato. Mick was a great guide - explaining the food and providing information about the market and the vendors as well as a little history about the city of Melbourne. At the end of our tour Mick was gracious enough to provide recommendations for the rest of our stay. We greatly enjoyed the tour and greatly appreciated the recommendations!

Multicultural food tour

What an excellent way to spend a morning in Melbourne, walking around the market and sampling the products we may have passed by. Tristan our guide was personable and interesting, and we learned a lot in our small group of three. Melbourne has a fantastic food supply and variety of cultures and this tour was really an excellent way to learn and enjoy, and of course to buy. I highly recommend it.

A fun and authentic taste of Melbourne!

My partner and I LOVED this tour of the Queen Victoria Market - it felt like the whole world in one market and we sampled so much of it! We loved meeting the vendors, hearing their stories and feeling their passion for the food they sell. Tamara was a wonderful guide, we felt so comfortable and at ease in her presence, she had her own local stories to contribute about growing up with regular market visits which made the experience really authentic. Tamara also went above and beyond to ensure rest rest of our stay in the city was a good as it could be, offering recommendations of other places to visit and how to find them. The tour was amazing! Our guide Christie was informative and friendly. The food was beyond ridiculously good and plentiful! I can’t recommend this tour enough!!!! Great value for money and such a full tummy I didn’t need dinner!!!

The Flavour Taste of Melbourne

As a local Melbournian I was pleasantly surprised by the Urban Adventures, South Melbourne Market tour. We were given the opportunity to sample many of the fresh local produce the market is famous for. Daniel our tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable and looked after us to ensure we had a wonderful morning. The best part is you can skip the lines and enjoy the buzz of the market, whilst learning the history of the longest running market in the southern hemisphere.

YUM! The best way to experience the South Melbourne markets.

This is my 10th Urban Adventure and they just keep getting better. I took this tour on a sunny day in November. Daniel, our guide, hails from Rio and came to Melbourne to live and designed this incredible tour which shows just how multicultural Melbourne and the South Melbourne Markets are. We had a really great group of around 8 people, we spoke to vendors from Poland, Greece and China. Tasted everything from the famous dim sims, croissants, olives, tea, berries, cruelty free milk and good old Aussie pies. Plus finished off at an iconic local pub for a beer. I am from Melbourne and I have never experienced the markets in such an immersive way. I will be returning there regularly for sure. Thank you Urban Adventures.

Melbourne’s delicious hidden gem

Awesome way to start the morning with my tour guide Daniel. Such a huge variety of tasty, fresh and local food which I would never have discovered on my own. The South Melbourne markets have so much charisma and the people we met along the way shared amazing stories about the history of the market and how it developed into the vibrant place is it today. 100% recommend this tour for anyone who loves food and all the goodies that come with markets such as clothes and jewellery etc etc!!
