Absolutely incredible 3D2N tour of bromo, ijen, and Tumpak waterfall! The driver picks you up from your hotels, and is very polite and punctual, the provided food was fantastic, and every tour guide we had so friendly and knowledgeable! Every day was better than the last, absolutely magical places to visit! Unfortunately there were a lot of tourists at each destination but this was not the fault of the company! The accommodation we stayed at was fantastic too! Highly recommend this tour and this company if you come to Indonesia!

3 day tumpak sewu, bromo and ijen

Tumpak sewu, Bromo and Ijen are fantastic places and absolutely worth to see. It’s quite an exhausting 3 days, getting up just after midnight two days in a row and a lot of time is spent in the car (4-7 hours each day) but at the end we were happy to do it, just be prepared for it. Our driver Luli took great care of us. The tour was well organised. We didn’t have to do anything but enjoy the time.

Amazing trip with the best guides

We had an amazing three day trip, having Sugeng as driver. And this guy was a machine! Driving us around for hours and hours, while making sure we were comfortable. The first day to the waterfall was a nice hike, visiting the waterfall (which is really crowded) and a nearby cave (which had no tourists in sight, bonus!). The second day Mr. Hadi and Theodore drove us in a jeep to Mt. Bromo. Even though the viewpoint was completely covered in clouds, we had an amazing experience. Theodore spoke English perfectly and was able to guide us around, making sure we skipped the traffic jam downwards and arriving in a surprisingly sunny valley below. Beautiful views!! The third day was Ijen, which was the highlight of this tour. Our guide made sure we had the most optimal route into the crater, to show us the blue fire. Amazing! After this we hiked back up as quick as possible to see a beautiful sunrise over the mountains. Sugeng brought us everywhere and was the sweetest man possible, hats off to his driving skills. Truly enjoyed our experience with Smartway. Would recommend!

It was genuinely an amazing experience, we loved every minute of it! The organization and communication was superb, they made sure everything was planned to the smallest detail! Our driver, Bonnie, was super friendly and always ready to help, even when we lost a phone on the last day. Can’t thank him enough for helping us getting it back. Also the local guides were so nice and friendly and they know how to take the best pictures. Do be aware that the tour can be tyring due to the early wake ups but worth every minute of it! Would highly recommend 😁

Lovely guides, driver and a great way to experience the volcanos!

Really enjoyed the tour with our fantastic driver Luly who picked us up from our hotel in Malang and was with us the whole 3 days - always with a smile on his face! The Bromo and Ijen sunrise hikes were excellent (despite being unlucky with the weather) and really enjoyed the experience from our guides Denny and Sahari (think his name is). The only drama was that our itinerary changed last minute so that we nearly spent the 1st night in Malang instead of Cemoro Lawang (a lot closer to Bromo). The team did make the necessary arrangements for us to stay in Cemoro Lawang, though, which we appreciated. It may be worth checking the itinerary before the tour starts if that’s important to you. Besides that, we had WhatsApp’s each day/ the night before which meant everything ran smoothly so huge thank you to the team.

Amazing volcanoes tour experience

I took a solo 3 day tour from Malang that ended up at the ferry terminal for the next stage of my tour in Bali. This was incredible value for money - it's an exhausting schedule considering the times you need to wake up for the volcano hikes but really well worth it. My driver stopped off at some amazing restaurants and was happy to let let me take a few extras hours to swim at the hotels etc. The company rep spoke excellent English, explained everything in detail and kept checking in frequently to make sure everything was going well. Can't recommend it enough, essential if you're in Java.

Amazing tour, organization sucks.

We booked: 3D2N - Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu, Kawah Ijen Crater start from Malang or Surabaya Before we went to Indonesia, my partner and I decided to book this tour, despite the high costs. However, it later turns out that these costs do not provide the expected service. Firstly, they only provide additional information a week to a few days in advance. When you get a ‘you should bring this’-list a few days before, you have to little time to make sure you have everything. This information included that for Kaweh Ijen you must visit a local doctor for a health certificate. The costs for this are for your own account. Apparently the regulations have been adjusted for this since January, but this cannot be found anywhere on the booking site. Even after repeated asking if they wanted to adjust the information on the site, they have not changed the information. Before the second day of the tour starts, they send a text asking if we would both like to leave a 5-star review (and send them a screenshot of this as proof) and write that the rules for health declaration have changed and that people therefore want to take extra cash with them. They do not provide an answer to what the health declaration details are, only that it is a regular examination. Our driver eventually tells us that he only needs a copy of our passport and that he will then arrange the health declaration. A big scam and not intended to actually check whether you are in good health to go up the volcano. Just a trick to make more money. We discussed the costs of the health certificate with the organization, we think that the health certificate is a part of the entrance fee as it is not possible to acces kawah ijen without. The organization offered to pay it, only if we would leave a 5-star review as a ‘win-win’ situation. You’ll need to earn a 5 star review, not demanding or negotiating for one. We feel bad for the drivers and the tourguides because they are great and they deserve a 5 star review. We don’t like being pushed to write a 5 star review. Due to Ramadan there were few breakfast options available, they did very little to arrange this properly. You just get a takeaway meal from KFC or McDonalds in the morning. That's right, for breakfast... They also do not take allergies into account. They indicate that because payment is made through a third party, they cannot take dietary preferences into account. However, with us there was no preference, but an allergy/disease. They don't care much about this and don't do their best to accommodate you or help you finding a solution. We had indicated well in advance that we had someone with an allergy. However, they do not take this into account. the McDonalds they eventually suggested also turned out to be something completely different. Just chicken, dry rice and an egg mcmuffin. These were not the two menus we could choose from, see the screenshots. The organization is also not prepared to think about solutions on how we can take my allergy into account. Bad thing, since they do argue that you must be in good health to participate in the tour. How can you be in good health without decent food? The rest of the breakfasts, besides McDonalds, consisted of a muffin, a Twix and a sweet roll. How is this decent ground for climbing volcanoes? Only the last breakfast was reasonable, a sandwich with butter, jam and a hard-boiled egg. That egg was the only thing I could eat the entire trip with my celiac disease. Ridiculous considering we announced it in advance. I understand that it is nice that they offer breakfast, but make sure that it is also something where you can make a decent effort in terms of nutritional value. Our driver took us the second day to a nice restaurant, that part was actually good. They also give unclear answers to questions you have, they keep giving the same answer. There is never anyone from the organization itself there to solve things. Only the driver is from the organization, but when we had an issue he also needed to clear it with somebody else. The tour guides are local and hired by the organization, not working for Smartway ID ifself. Regarding the stay, it could also have been better. We had booked a budget homestay, but even for the high price you pay you expect a little more quality. If you book all the tickets separately, you will have a pretty good amount left over to arrange a stay. The room only had a toilet, shower and a bed. That's fine, as long as the pubic hairs weren't left in the shower drain, the tap wasn't moldy and the carbon monoxide concentration was good. After turning on the shower tap (because you don't even have a sink) we both immediately got a bad headache. Most likely carbon monoxide. Since you are in the middle of nowhere, you cannot reach anyone to help with this. With good luck we slept with all the windows open to let it air out. The second stay was better, except for the mold , from the bathroom to the curtains and the bed. That hotel even had a pool, so that stay was better. The location of the first homestay could also have been better. You have no food options during Ramadan and can not arrange a taxi. If you are in the village 10 minutes further, that is possible. It would have been better if they had arranged a homestay there. We understand that faults or problems can happen, but as soon as they occur, you’ll need to fix them. And fix them better than the way they did with breakfast during the ramadan. Only that way you put the customers first and are you deliviring a 5 star service. We pitty it the most that the drivers are feeling sorry for these negative aspects. Again their service is great and we also told them. In short, don't book with this organization. The drivers and tour guides were friendly and would do anything for you, but the organization sucks. It is better to arrange it yourself or through another organization. The waterfalls and vulcanos are amazing, I absolutely would it again. The local guides are good and the driver as well. That’s why we give 2-3 stars after all. But we recommend doing it with another organization.

Fantastic Trip

The trip was amazing. The contact from the head office was regular and clear from the outset, regularly checking everything was going well and asking if we needed any assistance. Our driver Lulu was so friendly and accommodating and really made the travel between activities and accommodation easy and pleasant! The trips themselves were great too, the Waterfalls were some of the best we’ve seen and both Bromo and Ijen were fantastic with the best views. As a few other reviews have mentioned sleep is really important as you are up at 12:30 and 1am for both the tours so sleep in the cars if you can. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone that is debating adding it to their itinerary.

Beautiful views and very kind people. WE had a private driver the whole time who also explained us the local life. The tour is challenging regarding the sleep but it is worth it.

A positive experience

Great trip and for us it was definitely worth going through Smartway tour agency, we initially thought we would visit these sights independently but changed our minds as this tour was reasonably priced and saved a lot of time and effot on public transport and organising guides and accommodation. Everywhere we stayed was nice and allowed us to rest which is important on this tour due to the early starts. The communication from Smartway was pretty good so can’t complain there. What made this tour so good was not only the once in a lifetime sights but the great driver and guides we had. Bonnee our driver is a legend and we enjoyed his company and conversation the whole time. It feels like we are good friends now. The same can be said for Denny and ‘Oneday’. These guys both shared a local insight into their respective areas and gave us a better understanding of area culturally and naturally. We chose the budget accommodation option and found this to be comfortable and better than the pictures suggested, so unless you like the luxury life and I’d say you will find yourself sleeping and resting fine.

No better way to see East Java

THE BEST TOUR! From start to finish we had the most amazing experience in East Java with smartway tours. First their customer service was amazing, there was some scheduling issues that were completely my fault and they were super helpful and flexible with us. For the tour itself every guide we had was friendly, knowledgeable, and also takes great photos :) They always made sure we were comfortable and having fun. For the sites themselves they are absolutely stunning and although it is a long three days it is so beyond worth it to be able to see these places. Definitely my favorite three days of our entire month in Indonesia and I am so happy I booked with this company to make this experience as amazing as it was. Thank you!!

Stunning nature, great service, fantastic experience!

Stunning nature, great service, fantastic experience! The three days offer a good variety of natural beauty, and we wouldn't have wanted to miss any of them. Everything is very well organised, and we had a fantastic driver and guide especially at the Ijen crater. The guides at Tumpak Sewu and Bromo were very nice too, although we would have wished them to share a bit more knowledge and background information about what we saw. But all of them were great photographers that helped us to eternalise our memories of the trip in very nice pictures. We chose the homestays for accomodation, which were good enough although only for short nights. But the early get-ups were absolutely worth it! Practically we would recommend to bring water shoes for the day at Tumpak Sewu, because part of the walk is litterally in some waterfalls. You can also rent a pair of those shoes there. For Bromo you need to dress up warmly because it is quite chilly before the sun comes up. It is possible to rent a winter jacket there if you haven't brought warm clothes yourself. Be aware that you are sitting and waiting for a while until sunrise starts, and that there is only a very short hike to the top of the crater later when the sun is out already. This little hike is in the sand so it gets very dusty and you might want to have a mask or something else to cover your mouth and nose. The rest of the tour at Bromo is by jeep. At Ijen it is also cold during the night but you get warm enough from the hike. Here it is best to wear hiking shoes and you may want to bring a flashlight.

We had a really amazing tour with our driver Rifky who spent three days with us. He is a so much kind person and a well prepared guide! He found us the perfect spots!! REALLY SUPER SUGGESTED! Thankyou!!

Worth it, but not the premium resort homestay

It was amazing, everything went very well. Our driver was very nice and took good care of us. Although his driving skills are a bit dangerous and not that safe (he thinks he's Max Verstappen or something) he brought us to all the points on time. All the places we went where just amazing and beautifull. We took the premium homestay but afterwards I think it's not worth it to take it. Just take the local homestay because it is not what they show on the pictures. Because we arrived late at the hotel and resort and we leave very early in the morning to see the sunset, you don't really enjoy the hotel or the resort. We only stayed not more then 6 hours at the hotel and resort but payed almost 170 euro more. I met a couple who did the same tour as us and they took the local homestay and still got the same hotel as ours. They also stayed at a 3 stars resort. So take my advice and take the local homestay. You only sleep at the hotel and resort so that's why the local homestay is enough.

Smart Way Indeed

As locals, I and 2 of my friends actually can just go there by ourselves, but we decided to join this trip arranged by Smartway and it's one of our best decision ever. Our driver is very professional and knowledgeable about the destinations and the dynamics of the place. He also gives great suggestions on restaurants or other important purchases. The tour guides in each destination are no exception. Their English are not always perfect but enough to help us during the trip, and they are very reliable. I can see that Smartway did a great job at recruiting and training their staff. The accommodations provided were very nice for us locals. We asked to change our transit city for the second day and they swiftly booked a proper room for us. Won't say much about the destination coz they're definitely amazing. Very big thanks for Smartway. I wish to use their service again for different destination in the future.

Best way to explore Central/East Java

Wonderful, exhausting but really fulfilling trip!

Everyone involved in the trip was great. We really loved our driver and all the tour guides. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and happy. The driver couldn’t speak English but we used wechat translate and he was still very friendly and helpful. He always stopped to get us snacks and teach us some things about Java. Just a really pleasant guy. The trip itself was so exhausting. There is not adequate time to rest at the hotels so I suggest sleeping in the car as much as you can. Also make sure to pack warm clothes, sandals with good grip, swimsuit and towel, you need the swim gear for the waterfall, i got soaked. You need winter clothes for the volcanoes. It was FREEZING at Bromo and I was truly not prepared. If you didn’t pack anything, fear not, they rent Jackets out at each volcano but better to have your own. Overall I really enjoyed the trip and I recommend it !

Everything was fine, the driver and the trip organization. You get exactly what they say in the description but check first if you can see the blue flames because it might not be available.

Terrific experience, but more intense than expected

Perfectly organized tour. Comunication was very clear and it was always clear what the precise plan of the day was, though the day schedule in the itinerary brief was not fully accurate. E.g. the car drives between the places were much longer, leaving little time to chill at the homestays or resorts. All sights were tremendously beautiful, the waterfal in particular exceeded my expectations with many more beautiful waterfals and caves along the hike. Make sure you wear proper sandals beacuse you will walk through flowing water streams. Waking up so early two days in a row was less pleasent, particularly since IMO the sunrises themselves were underwhelming. You arrive at the view point up to one hour before the sky starts glowing and the sunrise itself was not special conpared to other places on earth. Arriving their during Golden hour would be prefered since the viewpoints are the prettiest at that time, you get more sleep, dont have to hike in the darkness, and dont have to wait in the cold to see the views. Overall I would highly recommend this tour, but be aware of the long drives and short sleeping nights you will get.

Excellent team 10/10

This company is very professional, all team are set to be clear in communication and the travel consultant (Clara) was very responsive. This is things I love the most about this company! We joined this tour because we dont have much time to explore East Java. We only have 3 days and so on Smartway give us a chance to Explore all! Even more than what we are expected. One thing you have to know about this tour is that almost every day you will wake early, on the day 1 you will start the trip around 7.00 morning and tour finished around 6 PM! One the day 2, you will start going to Mount Bromo at 1.30-02.00 AM to catch sunrise and tour winish around 11.00 AM continued by long road to Ijen. On the last day, you will start to hike Ijen for about 2 hours at 1.00 AM! CRAZY YA! But very worth to try. jajaja! All your travel needs are prepared already! So, grab your ticket and go! We appreciated your great effort, Thank you very much Clara, Adi and Bima. We highly recommended! Smartway team are above the service!

Tour of a lifetime!

This tour was amazing!!! Great staff all around from the local guides, to drivers, to the admin WhatsApp communications. The tour hits the best spots, so have your camera ready! Here are a few tips though: -have decent fitness ability as the waterfall and crater hikes are intense. -Bring a jacket (or can rent for 30k at top of sunrise tour), & water shoes (rugged outdoor sandals or grippy shoes) or at least a second set of shoes because your shoes will get soaked day 1 at the falls. -Pack PLENTY of water & snacks -rest up on car rides, cause once you get to your accommodation, it’ll be only a few hours until your wake up call. You’ll see some beautiful parts of Indonesia and meet great people along the way, enjoy!

East Java tour

One of the most amazing experiences of my life. The guides (Nova, Adi and Sam) were all amazing and were both super accommodating and fun. They really do go above and beyond. As for the experience itself you see some of the most views, it felt like a very magical experience. If you are in East Java I highly recommend doing Tumpac, Bromo and Ijin as one tour because they are all very different experiences, but equally amazing!

Epic 3 day tour of the best of Java!

We had an amazing time with Febri and Smartways. This tour was well organized and Febri, our tour guide showed us a great time to some of Java's best sites. The first day we got picked up in the morning from our hotel in Malang, then we drove to Sewu. Febri knew all the good photo spots and helped us take a bunch of photos. Then we hiked down to the viewpoint at the bottom. I highly recommend you hike up to the waterfalls - be careful of the strong current as you cross. After the tour, we went to our hotel for the night. It was okay, no AC, no sink, no toilet paper, but it was clean, and we were able to sleep a couple of hours before our day two tour. We got picked up around 1AM from our hotel, and drove up the mountain to see Bromo at sunrise. The ride was rough, but I enjoyed it as I like off roading, but I can see how some might feel uneasy as you are bouncing around in the back while the driver navigated obstacle after obstacle. The point of getting up the mountain early is to secure a parking spot, once up there, we waited about an hour or so, so make sure you bring a jacket as it can get quite chilly. The hike up to the actual viewpoint is only about 10 mins. The sunrise is breathtaking, if you have good weather. After Bromo, we drove back down to the hotel, showered, then drove 7 (yes, seven) hours to our next hotel near Ijen, the final stop on the tour. We were told that we will not be able to see the blue flame, due to some dangers in the air due to the sulfur. That was fine by me as we were was absolutely exhausted at this point. We hiked up the mountain at around 4am, there was unfortunately no sunrise, but as you can see from the photo, it is still very beautiful. The clouds are very dramatic and the blue water of the Ijen crater is stunning. Overall, this was a great tour and I highly recommend Smartways. Fikri (owner) called me the night before to explain all the details and help answer all my questions. It is cheaper to book directly with them, so that is something to consider. However, they do not take card, and you will have to transfer the funds, this was a bit challenging for us but we eventually figured it out. Big thanks to our guide, Febri and our drivers for a great trip! Looking forward to our next adventure

Amazing natural experience

The things you see on this tour are so amazing that it makes up for the poor customer treatment from the agency. Pros: -Our driver (Doni) was amazing! He was great at taking us around and playing nice music for the long drives. He was the most memorable person we met in our month in Indonesia. Its worth noting that the driver is not directly employed by the agency that runs the tour. -All 3 natural attractions were among the best things we experienced in one month in Indonesia, so completely worth it -All entrance fees and accommodation is included, so you just worry about where you eat Cons: -Just a few hours before my tour started, I was told (after I reach out to the agency) that we couldn’t see the sunrise from Mt Bromo because it was closed for 24hrs due to the Balinese new year. They knew it would be closed several days in advance (at least) and didn’t bother in telling me to rearrange the dates. This was a massive disappointment as watching that sunrise was intended as one of the main reasons to go to Java. -The agency didn’t inform me where we were staying. Knowing this would help to plan some things ahead (maybe just useful for control freaks like me)

Beautiful tour!!

We did the 3D2N tour. It was amazing! The waterfall, bromo and Ijen were all really beautiful to see! At the bromo our driver David really know where the best spot was to see the bromo, we were front row! And our driver was really nice and we trust him on the road very well. The places where we slept were fine and breakfast was nice. At every spot we got a tour gide, so no worry about that. At the Ijen and Bromo it could be a bit cold, so bring a sweater. However, when walking you get warm. So make sure you put some layers on that you can take off. I really would recommend to not skip the waterfall as this was a really nice addition to the tour.

Solo trip

From start to finish, everything was well planned and I was kept informed of any modifications needed. Fikri (consultant) coordinated everything so well that the trip felt tailored to my experience. The driver Misbah, an incredible person with a strong will when driving long distances with minimum breaks ☺️ I salute him. Nova, the guide, extremely personable and takes amazing pictures as I was travelling solo. From me, it was a hard choice to pick a favourite part of the trip as every moment was exceptional, from the Tumpak Sewu waterfalls to the Ijen crater/ Blue lake and Mt. Bromo. The accommodation was suited for the brief stay. Thank you for making it amazing beyond my expectations! 🤗👍

Amazing Trip with Smartway

I've really enjoyed my trip with smartway a week ago 😊 I love the majestic of Ijen crater, the beautiful waterfall in Tumpak sewu and also the best sunrise in Bromo. Best option to discover East Java

Smartway is a great way to explore the most stunning places in East Java. It has been really convinient for us to have everything taken care of (from Malang to Ketapang harbour) and to just enjoy the waterfalls and volcanos. Nova is an enthusiastic guide with lots of interesting insights and he has been looking after us during the whole journey. Nova is a great photographer and video editor as well and he took some amazing shots. Thank you guys!!!

Great tour

Our guide was very nice and helped us to explore the sights outside of only the highlights. He was very familiar with the area around the waterfalls! The tour might seem on the expensive side but you get what you pay for: the accommodations were nice, we got breakfast and drinks and there were no hidden costs. The sights are all beautiful too, of course. We had a guide and a driver. If you plan to do this tour, make sure you are well-rested because you will get up early every day and there is a lot of traveling. The only minus was the fact that they took a while to respond to our messages. Thank you to Bima and mas Bebek for a really great time!

This tour was absolutely amazing, they will take you to all spots they mentioned on the detail of tour. I recommended you to book this tour just in case you have a limited time to explore East Java but one thing you have to prepare is your fit and healthy body condition, because sometime you gonna feel tired and need rest. Highly recommended!

We took the 3 days tour to East Java and book it a little bit sudden. Luckily they still accepted our reservation and picked us at our hotel in Malang city the next morning. Tour is going as what they offer, meal and accommodation are provided. It's only 2 stars hotel anyway (homestay). There is no 3 starts+ hotel at Bromo and Kawah Ijen, that's why we stayed at the 2 stars hotel. The good news is hot water is available. Thank you Smartway Indonesia for your kind and helpful staff. Can't wait to be back in East Java!

I booked this tour package for family vacation 6 days to East Java and Bali. We spent 3 days visiting the highlights of our holiday in East Java: Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu and Ijen Crater.  The other 3 days we spent on vacation in Bali. In terms of service, smartway has a good service with a professional team.  Our tour leader's English is excellent!  It's very helpful when we want to ask something during the trip (example: how people live here, their job, culture, etc). Exciting journey!

We decided to take a short vacation to East Java: Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu waterfall and Ijen Crater are on our bucket list. However, it was quite difficult for us to get access to public transportation because the schedule did not fit our schedule. We decided to make a reservation for this tour package because this tour includes transportation, 2 meals a day, lodging and an English speaking guide! Our guide named Agus, a very friendly person and has good skills in photography. Likewise with our driver, Mr. Yus, who was very helpful even though there was a language barrier between us, but Agus always helped us to translate. Overall, they are very nice and professional people! Thank you Smartway Indonesia! Can't wait to come back to East Java and visit other exotic places with you! PS: This tour applies good health protocols, we are asked to wash our hands regularly, hand sanitizer is available in the car, it is necessary to wear a mask during the tour except while eating, our guide also asked us to stay away from the crowd and show us a place that is a little far from tourists so our photos look good with less people!
