El Escorial: Worth a Long Visit

Quite a bustling city on a Sunday in San Lorenzo. Learned that spring brings wedding and celebrations in San Lorenzo. Visitors may have have been many, but given the massive scale, one could not easily tell when touring in the monastery. Senior discount 6 E. Excellent audio guides give a good orientation and keeps one on pace for one's visit. The basilica, its sculpture of Charles V family, Celleni crucifix and Lucas Jordan fresco are incredible to view. The pantheon of the kings is a reason to visit alone. Italian artists grace the walls, as well as El Greco's The Martyrdom of St. Maurice and The Adoration of the Name of Jesus. Having read Geoffrey Parker's Imprudent King, I really enjoyed seeing Phillip's study, the austere setting from which he ruled (or tried) every detail of the Spanish Empire, in stark contrast to the sumptuous monastery/palace. For a Spanish history buff, I would recommend a two day stay in San Lorenzo and two visits. Great gift shop with gifts for all. Travel books are a bit down on El Escorial, suggest you obtain a visitor's guide for the Monastery of SanLorenzo el Real de El Escorial and decide for yourself.
