David did an amazing job taking us up and through the mountains to waterfalls and creeks. We had lunch at a fabulous restaurant along our mountain path. The food was delicious. David was very patient and professional. No trip to Javo is complete without an AXR ATV Tour!

SCAM!! UNPROFFESSIONAL

AXR (AN EXTREME RIDER) Costa Rica Off Road LTDA I recently had a very disappointing and concerning experience with AXR (AN EXTREME RIDER), also known as Costa Rica Off Road LTDA. On September 26, 2024, my friends and I rented 7 Talons and one ATV, putting down a deposit of $7,000. From the start, there were major red flags. I was pressured to name all the drivers and sign on their behalf, which felt rushed and unprofessional. We received no safety advice, training, or information about the challenging paths we would be navigating. Unfortunately, one of my friends, who was a first-time driver, rolled one of the vehicles. While damages occurred, the management claimed the cost was exactly $7,000—an amount that felt extremely suspicious. They then offered a cash settlement of $5,000, which I refused because I believed the actual damages were around $3,000. I felt immense pressure and decided to leave it on my card, hoping to dispute the charges later. I would NEVER recommend this company or any of its affiliates. They provide no insurance, lack professionalism, and prioritize profit over customer safety. This operation feels like a complete scam. Save yourself the trouble and look elsewhere for an adventure in Costa Rica!

Abner is the best!

Abner was a great guide! We had him all to ourselves and it was great to be able to learn about the area. Jaco Falls was amazing and the pineapple smoothie was delicious. Thank you Abner for a great trip. He even shared a local fruit drink recipe with us that I’m looking forward to trying..

Another great ride

Our 2nd time with AXR. Got two side by sides and took off for a couple hours. Danny was our guide is just the best. He took us on a new trail that rocked. Our only regret is we should have gone longer.

Loads of fun...

Absolutely an awesome adventure in the 2 hour buggy ride. Our tour guide was the absolute best. Prepare to get wet and dirty lol. The stop at the bar/restaurant is a great touch. One thing to keep in mind that a hefty deposit is required.

1 hr is not enough

10/10 Recommend. Our 1 hr tour was awesome but definitely not enough time. Book with Danny very knowledgable.

Pura Vida

Great 4 hour trip with vistas / waterfalls / off reading through a riverbed and a typical Costa Rican lunch . Gabriel was an excellent guide

Awesome experience

The whole thing was a blast from beginning to end. Michael, our guide was the best. We did the 3-hour tour but if you have the time, I suggest the whole day.

The road are very dusty bring face covers otherwise it’s difficult to breathe . Beautiful views and stopped at a waterfall . Lunch was amazing

We had a great time!

This was our family's favorite excursion while in Costa Rica. I think what made it so great was our tour guide, Danny. He was friendly and helpful and fun. He knew how to use my phone's camera better than I did, and took some great pictures for us as well. The trails were not scary steep or rocky or too adventurous for me or my two kids. Bring face covers. We bought bandanas at the atv place, and I'm glad we did. Our guide provided googles. We were very dusty. Danny pointed out animals to us and told us interesting things about the towns and places we went through. He helped make sure my kids were safely secured in the back after we all got out to check stuff out. There are atv tours everywhere, but Danny our guide really made this one great.

Worth it!!!

We had an EXCELLENT trip with Danny. The scenery was amazing and the food at the local restaurant where we had lunch was delicious. You will be dusty and dirty at the end of the tour, but it's worth it! It is also very safe for families to travel in these buggies.

Great Buggy Tour of the Jaco Mountainside with AXR

Our family had a wonderful day with Luis in a buggy tour of Jaco’s surrounding mountains. The views were outstanding and Luis did a nice job of explaining landscapes and the local nature along the way. The jump into the waterfall pool was very refreshing. The tour included a stop at a local restaurant atop one of the mountains. We decided to have lunch there. Prices were good and the food very good. My daughter and I had ceviche and my wife had rice and beans with pork. Yummers all the way around. It was also the first time I had limonada con yerba buena or lemonade with mint. i had one at every meal afterwards. Crazy refreshing even when I added a shot (or two) of Tito’s the last few nights. Lastly, the equipment we used was in great shape and we never felt rushed in any way. We recommend this tour thru AXR.

Buggy ride

A great time with a great guide. Kids loved going through the water. The buggy was very fun to drive and the waterfall was beautiful!

Really fun

I think the tour was overpriced, but my husband lived it and gives it 5 stars. We booked the 2 hour buggy tour. We drove up a winding path to a restaurant at the top of a mountain. The views were spectacular, but you'd think for $170 they could provide a bottle of water, but no drinks were included. We paid $22 US for 2 non-alcoholic fruit juices (really). That's outrageous. Anyway, driving back we went through a riverbed and got completely splashed with mud! Super fun. The guide had a face/neck cover thing, and if I do this again I'll get one too.

Awesome Tour!

We would 200% recommend this tour. We had a blast with our guide. Visiting waterfalls, driving through the river, visiting the beach, stopping at peaks with the most beautiful views and learning about the wildlife in the area. We even stopped at a restaurant with the most beautiful view, delicious food and drinks. We loved it so much we would go again next time we visit.

Great value for money

I like doing buggy tours and I have done in various countries. This one is the one that I would definitely recommend for the following reasons: very reliable vehicle from a well know brand (Honda for the one that I used), the condition of the vehicle was very good (in most cases vehicles of similar companies tend to be quite worn-out), I was surprised to see that it was a fully personalised and private experience - we had the tour guide (Ninja) leading the way on a motorcycle and it was just our buggy and the tour guide, we were more than pleased with the tour guide - very knowledgeable, open and fun. The guide took us to a nice soda where they served very good food and it was like a nice viewpoint. All, in all, I would say that it was very good value for money. We rode 2 people, but the buggy had a capacity of 5 and we understood that bringing extra friends would carry a marginal cost. Also, for safety issues, I always recommend paying for a buggy / UTV instead of an ATV. The Honda that we drove felt very safe, it had assisted steering wheel (which is big plus, as on most occasions you end up running muscle fever from turning the wheel when it is not hydraulically assisted), it had roof (which is great from shade and protection against rain) and it had actual doors (sometimes it happens that instead of actual metal doors you only get a mesh.

AXR and Gabriel are the bomb

We have enjoyed this ATV tour many times. AXR always has nice machines that run great! We enjoyed the 4 person side by sides for this tour. Gabriel does a great job showing you the sights and leading the pack. One of the best excursions you will ever take.

Do the 4 hour tour - you won’t regret it!

We booked a 4 hour tour and got Alberto as our guide. We have a son in a wheelchair and they were so awesome with him! Alberto was amazing! The ride was long and rough but the views at the top and the waterfall were so worth it!! We stopped for a drink on the way back and had the best pina colada ever!! Would highly recommend!!

Happy birthday PJ😍

Best time ever ……the oldest person being 68 and the youngest being eight!…. Around 26 of us celebrating a 50th birthday! Everyone agrees it was the best day ever! One little one said it was absolutely the best thing ever…. Jumping in the waterfall, exciting buggy rides …it was awesome! A huge thanks to our guides Apache, David and Ninja! Happy birthday PJ! Absolutely a must do!

Best Part of the Trip - Go with Henry!!

I cannot recommend this enough!! Henry was AMAZING and made the entire experience incredible. We did the four hour and will 100% be returning next month for another round.

Breathtaking views with a excellent host

Excellent day on this atv waterfall tour. Our host originally from Argentina was the best! Sorry I forgot his name but he was genuinely a very nice person whom our party really liked. We all would definitely recommend this tour. Breath taking views with a Excellent host.

A fun time

So glad we chose buggy ride instead of 4 wheelers. My husband enjoyed driving, my daughter and I enjoyed the ride. We did a 3 hr tour. Our guide is Ninja, who is born and raised from this area. He is accommodating and experienced. We had fun. A word of advice: avoid white or light color clothing because it’s very dusty.

Buggy and dirt bikes for the win!

This was one of the highlights of our Costa Rican adventures! We had the BEST guide! Ninja was so kind and knowledgeable. We saw some beautiful vistas and the private waterfall was spectacular but really Ninja, our tour guide was what made it the best!

4 Hour Buggy Tour

My wife and I went to Jaco in March of last year and I wanted to make sure I wrote a review on our experience with AXR An Xtreme Rider before time ran out to do so. We used this establishment on another trip to Jaco in 2017 and I cannot say enough good things about them. In 2017 we did a 2 hour tour and knew the next time we needed to do a longer ride, so this time we did the 4 hour tour on the side by side buggy vehicle and it was so much fun!! We absolutely loved our guide Oscar, who was the best guide ever!! That day we were the only ones on the tour and he gave us the best personal attention. He explained that this ATV tour company does a variety of routes whereas others often do the same every time. He asked us what it was that we wanted to see and personally tailored the route just for us. My wife is on oxygen and has to carry a portable oxygen concentrator machine with her. Oscar was so attentive to this and made sure that we went to a waterfall where we could drive the vehicle as close as possible with very minimal walking for her. Her oxygen machine needs to be kept out of the dust and we were a little concerned about this, but we made sure we rode at least 50 meters behind his vehicle on the dusty stretches, and we were able to stay clear of the dust quite well. This company is the only one we will use when we visit Jaco in the future and look forward to seeing these fine folks again!! 

A GREAT ADVENTURE

We had 12 people and 6 buggys. Gabriel and Pache did a TREMENDOUS job! I had been with this tour many times with Kine (who is great). They showed us many beautiful sites and made the ride alot of fun and exciting. We have NEVER been disappointed with AXR and their guides and we have used many times. Ron P.

Henry at AXR Jaco amazing trip with toddler

This was the best tour we had the whole trip. Our 2.5 year old son had a blast and so did we. The waterfall was beautiful our family had it all to ourselves and that made all the difference. The restaurant had great food and drinks and the view was absolutely stunning. Henry was such a great guide he made the trip so great for us and he was so good with our son. 10/10 book with Henry!

Great Afternoon

Nice way to spend an afternoon. Our guide, Fernando, was great. Equipment was in good repair and route was easy to navigate. View at the restaurant at the top was beautiful! Tip: Get in the front so you get less dust to your face! The provided goggles were perfect.

Buggy Ride with driver- FUN

Awesome trip! We had my older in laws on this trip so we needed an excursion that did not involve a lot of walking. Even though we drive ATV’s a lot at house we did the buggy tour and had Gabrielle and Brian drive our buggy’s. They did such a great job accommodating our group, taught us a lot about the wildlife and area. We saw an anteater and some other animals. We got to swim in a waterfall also. We were so glad that we had a guided buggy tour and did not take ATV’s on our own; we got it relax and enjoy the trip and see show much more this way! Great for older folks and younger kids that you don’t want to drive/ ride on an ATV.

Fun fun fun. DO it.

So so so much fun. Many stops and great food. I would do this again if in the area. Going with a small group is better as we did. These AVT's will go anywhere.

Incredible - and great for kids

One of the top experiences we had in Costa Rica. Awesome tour, great guide, the kids LOVED it! Highly recommend. Our boys are 4 and 6 and they absolutely loved this experience.

Incredible Guided Buggy Tour

An incredible afternoon, buggies to the top of a local mountain, through streams and then to a waterfall, and then back trhough streams digging up dirt and splashing water everywhere. Entire family had a blast. A lifetime memory.

Friendly and excellent service

We stopped in to buggy last minute after being denied at another adventure center. ATV adventures was friendly and pleasant they got us on a buggy tour within minutes! Our tour guide was so nice and friendly. The views were amazing.

Not as adevertised-avoid!!

We did the full day tour and it was petty disappointing. We started out driving for quite awhile on regular roads, which we then turned off onto a dried up riverbed. Most of the ride was on roads or the dried up riverbed. We did go through a few areas of the creek that were deep and thank God we did because it was hot and there was zero water on the trip. It's advertised that water is included and there was none. We had my 76 year old mom with us and it was almost 90 degrees and little shade. Thankfully some of us brought water bottles. The beaches we went to had filthy brown water so we weren't able to get in. Our guide seemed more interested in being on his cell phone than showing us his country. We drove under 20+ Macaw parrots and rather than stopping to let us watch them, he kept driving! We did not get to try local moonshine as someone mentions, nor did we see any chocolate, we didn't stop at the waterfall and our guide told us it was a 15 minute hike to the waterfall and that it wasn't that good. The original place we were supposed to have lunch, we did not go and our guide said it was closed and the food was bad anyway. So we went to a different place that was decent. All in all-I would not waste your time or money on this tour.

Super fun and exciting tour.

Our tour guide was super friendly, knowledgeable. And was great with the kids, he made them laugh and answered all there questions.

Unguided Talon Rental

Riding the riverbeds in Hermosa was a blast! I would highly recommend the Talon, it has power and space for 4 people.

Never gets old and Never disappoints

We visited AXR/ATV again for mayber the 6 or 7th time everytime we have an awesome experience. The machines are always in excellent shape and a blast to drive. We ALWAYS ask for KINE to be our guide and never disappoints. The scenery is magnificient the empanades on top of the mountain are fantastic. This a MUST do when in Costa Rica

So excited AF quad ride!

We took the 4 hours extreme tour in a quad and it was worth it! We went in the mountain, a natural pool, eat on top of the mountain with a breathtaking view and finish strong with an exciting ride in the river! It’s a trip to do at least once in a lifetime!

Never Again…

1. Let me start by saying Nancy was the sweetest most hospitable tour guide who went out of her way to make a bad situation as comfortable as possible. 1. First the guys operating the front desk delayed our tour by 1 hour (things happen so we let that slide). 2. Next they ask us for a security deposit before our tour, now the tour details vaguely mentions a security deposit but they were intentional in NOT DISCLOSING how much in the tour listing because to our surprise it was $500.00 USD, Yes I said $500.00 USD. Most tourists would be turned off immediately if this information was disclosed up front hence why I said it was intentionally omitted. Not to mention what if someone arrives at the facility and doesn’t have $500.00 USD for a temporary deposit, then what? 3. The last straw for me was the negligence from the guy in front office staff, my husband and I were sent Out into the forest in the middle of the rainy season , into the highest parts of the mountains where the fog is super thick and forced to drive alongside other automobiles with NO HELMET (which is listed as something that was part of the package we purchased) or goggles for that matter. It literally pisses me off that anyone would be so negligent knowing you have to deal with dirt and rocks flying up from the guides ATV in front of you and A likely chance of rain pouring during this time of year. Luckily we were smart enough to bring a towel because we expected that we may get a little wet, little did we know that the towel would end up becoming our only protection from the elements since I had to keep using it to wipe my Husband’s face In the pouring rain just so he could see and prevent us from going off a cliff or running into vehicles coming in the opposite direction. Needless to say our tour was cut short and I’d never take another tour with this company or recommend them to anyone who actually values their life and safety.

The owner(manager) and the guide Enrique are both amazing! we actually went on 2 tours with them. And the restaurant El Tajo is EXCELLENT! A must visit! WE HAS 2 BUGGIES... FUN TIMES...SAFE RIDE

Connecting with Nature!

So we were lucky enough to have Abner as our tour guide for the 4 Hour Buggy Ride! We started by filling our cooler back pack with water, ice and somerefreshments in the store next to AXR (you have to arrive to their place if you are staying outside Jaco, you can leave your car parked on the street or catch a Taxi to their location). By the Way PURCHASE the Dirt Bandana, doesn't matter the fashion of it, you can take me for this tip by sending positive vibes when you finished your tour haha. And then the adventure started driving thru the rice fields, BUMPY RIDE! then you keep going to a lookout point thru some off-road streets and what a VIEW you get - 360 mind blast of pure Costarican Nature beauty - just open a can, breathe and let the Pura Vida flow in. Then you keep driving to (in our case) a natural pool, cool, soul healing, open nature river natural pool. Great moment to wash all the dirt and chill out as the driving down to it is EXCITED! (It was for us!) You have to walk 5 mins to the pools, we did this in summer time so easier to go down, on winter could be trickier and muddier, grab a wooden stick if you have any walking condition but with patience you can get there and enjoy :) Other whise you can stay on your Buggy while your party goes down, just being there is amazing for the soul and brain. After this you start to drive back, stop for a refreshment/food on a bar with a great view of the nature, and theeen, go back to Jaco. We did this ride at 1PM so we arrived at Jaco by 5ish, just in time to watch the beautiful sunset with a cup of coffee... coff coff local beer coff coff. GO WITH AXR, don't hesitate, they are amazing!!! PURA VIDA!!

Jungle adventure

Enrique was our guide for our 4 hour adventure. We stopped at the river pools , cruised through the jungles and stopped at a jungle restaurant for the most amazing Pina Coladas and delicious authentic Costa Rican cuisine. Highly recommended adventure

Excellent service and great side by sides

Vehicles were in top shape, great response. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Will definitely do this again, we had a great day.

Awesome ATV tour with Kine!

With any tour, the tour guide sets the scene. We couldn’t be more happy with spending the day with Kine (Kenny). He took excellent care of our group of 8 friends visiting from Texas. He was knowledgeable, friendly, fun, super chill, as well as safe. He treated us like family and each spot along the tour was awesome. He’s a great photographer as well. Can’t wait to visit again!

A worthwhile excursion

Our family did an ATV/Buggy trip with Henry our guide today and it was worth every $ we spent. The vehicles were sturdy and felt safe for our two children ages 6 and 8 years, and Henry was courteous and knowledgeable! He was easy going with our children and an instant hit with our six year-old son. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for this kind of adventure! We certainly made some memories today!
