The Epitome of Highlander Hospitality

There are many discussions around what Scotland's greatest national treasures are.  Among the various possible answers, I would add Andrew MacDonald of Hame Tours to the list.  I hired Andrew for a four day private tour. He went to great lengths to put together an itinerary that catered to my specific interests. Our travels took us all around Inverness, Loch Ness, Isle of Skye & the Northern Highlands, and then down the Western Highlands to Edinburgh and St. Andrews.  That's a lot of ground to cover in such a short time, and this is where you'll most appreciate having someone so interesting in the car with you.  Andrew embodies all the Highlander Hospitality that one might hope to find in such a proud and welcoming people. In addition to having a scholarly knowledge of Scottish clan history, botany, poetry, folk music, etc, etc, Andrew is wonderful company, and before long you'll find yourself feeling like you've reconnected with a long lost friend.  Here's what I appreciated most: -- Extremely knowledgeable about tales of the Highlander Clans (e.g. the story behind the Well of the 7 Heads, the history of the Clearances, gory tales of the great feuds between the Clans like the Campbells and MacDonalds, or the legend behind King Brude's throne at the Ewe Tree Cemetery.) There's also much to learn about the history of constant invasions from outside entities. Andrew has a way of bringing history to life  -- He's very personable, charming really, giving you an intricate glimpse into Highlander culture with fantastic recommendations on Scottish folk music (Listen to William Gordon Smith's song "Cam By the Hills,"  or Andrew's own renditions on CD), poetry  (Read Robert Burns' poem "Parcel of Rouges in the Nation," or Cottars Saturday Night), and highlighting tales for the castles, fortresses, ruins, waterfalls, mountains and fairy pools to help you feel like you really understand what it is that makes Scotland Scotland.  -- So hard working:  Andrew ensured we went to places that best suited my particular areas of interest, even when I didn't know exactly what to ask for. I also appreciated how after driving/guiding for 8-10 hour days, he'd then go home and further plan out the next day's itinerary based on what he'd learned about my tastes.  Was delighted to be taken to a tartan shop with hundreds of choices, a scotch distillery where I could buy a special blend that could only be found there in the Highlands as a perfect gift for folks back home, a sheepdog farm, etc -- Great Driving. Spent a lot of time in the car together. He's a pro driver and the best of company. --Flexible. I needed to go to St. Andrews past the time I'd contracted Andrew for.  He offered to drive me and then gave me a mini tour of the area out of the goodness of his heart, making further recommendations on sites not to be missed while I was in the area.  If you're lucky enough to get to the Scottish Highlands, may you also be fortunate enough to find Andrew available to help show you Scotland at its finest.

Once in a lifetime tour!

Our party, two brothers and our wives, booked the private Outlander Experience in the Scottish Highlands from Inverness with hopes of seeing sites from the phenomenal books and show, and maybe a bit more of the Scottish Highlands. What we received, from Hame Tours Inverness, was truly a once in a lifetime event. Our tour guide, Michael Kerr, arrived at our hotel on time and full of enthusiasm for the day ahead. We remember his last name well because he introduced himself and acknowledged that the kilt he was wearing was indeed his family's tartan. We shared then that the brothers had Scottish heritage and our disappointment that our clan castle was no longer open for tours, which he found interesting and made us feel as if he was truly trying to get to know us. Our feeling of being in good hands was only enhanced when we climbed in the Mercedes Benz van! Before he even put the van in Drive, Michael outlined the day ahead, to confirm that's what we wanted, and then made sure we understood that, as this was a private tour, we could alter the itinerary however it suited us. We never thought he would alter the itinerary to suit us beyond our wildest dreams. The tour began, as Outlander begins, with a stop at the cairns (thought to be the inspiration for where Claire is transported). Michael proved himself knowledgeable and was so engaging that we thoroughly enjoyed his presentations about the stones. Then, it was on to the Culloden Visitor Center and tour of the battlefield. Michael gave us plenty of time to tour the visitor center unrushed and then led us on a walking tour of much of the battlefield. Again, he was knowledgeable, and it felt like an old friend sharing a travel tale, not like a professor regurgitating a history lesson. After a painful trip through the gift shop (painful to my wallet!), we were then presented with the most wonderful gift. While our little party took our time exploring the Culloden Visitor Center, Michael was busy researching our family name, Scottish heritage, and the nearby castle. While he drove us to the next stops on the original itinerary, he shared with us what he found out about our heritage and the castle. We then agreed to forego a couple of the original stops to go on a Monroe family quest. Michael took us to monuments that were well and truly off the beaten path, but commemorated battles the Munro clan engaged in hundreds of years ago. He then took us to see the castle, even if from afar, before taking us to a cemetery where many of our ancestors are buried. We could not have come up with a tour like this in our wildest dreams! Seeing the monuments and sites were in and of themselves amazing, but being led there by someone who was truly excited to give us this gift was beyond words. Every site on the original tour is absolutely a must see if you're touring Inverness, whether you're a fan of the Gabaldon show or not. Touring with a guide like Michael makes it a once in a lifetime event.

Excellent day in the Highlands

Michael was our guide for our Outlander tour. We spoke at the beginning of the tour to provide context on our three couples interests. He was able to create a curated, amazing day to keep everyone engaged, as not everyone had seen Outlander. We went to a distillery, saw the famous coos up close and even lambs as my friend requested. We had the best, most enjoyable day learning about the Highlands and would love to have Michael again on a future trip!

Adventures of a lifetime

Our guide, Ryan Forbes, was AMAZING! Not only did he take us to see the things listed on the tour, like Clava Cairns and Culloden Battlefield, but he also took the time to show us “his” country. This included taking the long way around, down small country roads and through quaint villages. We got to see Highland cows, have lunch at a deli Beauly, visit a mausoleum, old churches and graveyards, and a wooded hike to a stunning waterfall. Ryan was very friendly and open and talkative and he really listened to us and took the time to get to know us, thus resulting in an unforgettable custom tour. THIS is the Scotland we came here to see. We had the vacation of a lifetime and, if you want the same, you need to book Ryan as your guide. If we could rate him higher than five stars, we totally would! Thank you, Ryan, for an amazing day!

A memorable day well spent

We greatly enjoyed our private Outlander tour with our guide, Michael. We (four adults) had some interest in seeing Outlander sites, but primarily in the people and places important to the Rebellion culminating in 1746, and in the Clava Cairns. Michael was an ideal guide. He tailored the tour to our interests, skipping a couple of small sites in Inverness we'd already toured, and suggesting an itinerary that fit our available time and interest. We spend a lot of time at Culloden, which was well worth it, and Michael scheduled other visits around that. Michael was a great storyteller, with topics ranging from the Pictish peoples to Prince Charlie's travels, both at the head of an army and on the run from the victorious English army, to local flora, and his father and brother's favorite whiskys. One of the best practices a guide can offer is the willingness to answer a question with "I don't know." We asked a LOT of questions and Michael made clear the few times he was conjecturing, which gave us confidence in the accuracy of all we learned. In all, we visited Culloden (a great museum that prepared us well to view the battlefield), Clava Cairns, Leod Castle, and the ruins of the Beauly Priory. And, finally, we met Jamie Frasier; we'll let Michael tell you that tale. In all, we could not have enjoyed ourselves more on our full-day adventure.

Best private tour in my life

This was a wonderful day. Our guide Andrew was beyond exceptional. He made history come alive with his in depth knowledge of every place we went. This was an Outlander tour but my ancestors lived the real experience in their respective time. Scotland is a treasure.

Michael - Our companion in Inverness

We went on this tour with our guide and driver of the day Michael. we had an outstanding trip with Michael not only taking us on the pre decided tour but also showed us some places which were not initially planned. Michael was dressed in traditional Scottish attire and was a wonderful company thru the day. During the trip mid afternoon my agent from India called me and told that the next day trip which was going on the Hogwarts express stands cancelled as the train is over booked and though we have already pad but we cant board it. This was bad news and especially for my 10 yr old daughter it was as if the entire trip is useless without it, when Michael came to know about it he himself was very sad and tried all along by speaking to his contacts and trying to help us. Finally he suggested that we go early the next morning to Fort William and try and get tickets at the station- this helped and to our surprise we got the tickets. The fact that he went out of his way to help us speaks volume of his god nature and warmth. Another thing to highlight is that while we were going thru this struggle and obviously we were very upset he went out of the way and paid for entry tickets to Castle Leod for me and my family and refused to take the money from me, something which was just not necessary but he went out of the way and showed what a wonderful man he is. God bless you Michael and we look forward to hosting you in Mumbai sometime soon. Thank you once again for every thing my friend.

Do it! Book this tour it was utterly amazing! The guide Andrew was stellar, knowledgeable and had the best insights to each site! Very accommodating and enjoyed every minute! Our son loved it!

Roger was amazing! Gave us so much info and brought us to so many great spots. He went above and beyond to make the day memorable. He dressed in kilt and he was also funny. We enjoyed his company! would love to see him again!

An exhilarating experience

The combination of a highly knowledgeable and polite guide and the comfort of the best of transport is highly potent. Even though we had only a day, Ryan packed it in with so much experience and history and carefully exposed the beauty of the Highlands. We have decided to return to him for a week long tour with the whole family to relive such personalised attention. The tour with him was Just the appropriate prescription for uninitiated folks like us.

Thanks for the great day

Our tour guide Donald was a lot of fun. He veered off the beaten path a few times, to give us a little taste of “local flavor” (we especially liked Hazie, Masie, and Daisy). Unfortunately, Fort George was closed due to the Queen’s funeral, but Donald adjusted, and took us to Cawdor Castle instead. Overall, the tour was an excellent way to see the scenery of the Highlands, and Donald was an informative and engaging companion for the day.

Average

Based on previous reviews, I booked this tour thinking I was getting a tour guide who knew Scottish history and Outlander. However I was highly disappointed with the guide’s lack of knowledge of both. He was a great driver who very efficiently got us from one place to the next however there was no discussion of history while driving. Make sure you follow the tour stops and do not deviate from the tour.

Hame Tours is absolutely the best! Excellent communication before the tour. Prompt for the tour. We saw amazing sites and it was everything we wanted to see in and around Inverness in a day. Our guide, Ryan, was knowledgeable, personable and flexible. If you book a tour in the Highlands you must do it through Hame Tours and request Ryan Forbes. This is the best way to see the Highlands!

Amazing private tour of Scotland with Andrew

We spent 6 wonderful days on a private tour with Andrew from Edinburgh to the Highlands, Isle of Skye, Oban and back to Edinburgh. He took us absolutely everywhere - even shopping for clothes and a suitcase because British Air lost our luggage. We loved visiting all the Outlander sites, the breathtaking scenery, the many castles. Andrew's knowledge of the area and its history is outstanding. He is easy to talk to and I feel like we made a life long friend. He made wonderful suggestions for cafes and restaurants (Ee-usk in Oban has to die for seafood). We even made an unexpected stop at Midhope Castle (aka Lallybrach in Outlander). I can't say enough good things about Andrew and our tour of Scotland. I highly recommend Hame Tours.

Fantastic Tour!

Fantastic trip!!! Jim was the absolute best tour guide! He was very knowledgeable about Scottish history and made the connections to outlander so it was a good combination of fact and fun! He was super personable and flexible and in the end we booked a second day with him. I can honestly say we learned a lot, had a ton of fun and made a new friend in Jim.

Fun and informative .

I loved our guide George .can’t say enough wonderful things about him , this tour followed the book version of outlander rather than the tv show so if you are looking to see the castles and places where they filmed , you need to go to southern Scotland .

Spontaneous trip to SKYE

I loved our experience with this tour! Steve was our guide and he was phenomenal! We originally signed up for the Outlander tour, but when the day we signed up for arrived it was so sunny and clear outside (which is rare in Scotland) that Steve asked us if we wanted to go on a road trip to the island of Skye instead. We all agreed and I am so glad we did! We spent up to 8 hours in a car with Steve and it was never awkward. We drove down from our AirBnb in Inverness and made stops at castles and historic sites along the way. If we ever wanted to stop he was willing to do so. I really loved how we never felt rushed! He also answered all our questions regardless of how random they may have sounded. He definitely is a knowledgeable man who loves his country which is great! Our trip to Skye was absolutely beautiful! I am happy Steve suggested it, because we were able to see such beautiful sights that normally aren't seen unless it is a clear day. We ended the trip with a greater appreciation for Scotland and the feeling like we had a new friend. Steve and his tour was the highlight of our trip to Scotland. I would recommend him to everyone I know! (He also gave us tips and background for the sites in the Outlander tour which were great. We had more time in Inverness and were still able to go)

Excellent Tour and Tour Guide (Steve)

Our original Scottish Tour was cancelled a few weeks before our visit due to lack of participation so we had to scramble to recreate our trip before arriving. Our travel agent booked this tour for us so we were not sure what to expect. This day/tour ended up being the BEST day of our trip thanks to our tour guide Steve. He personalized our tour by finding us Highland Cows to visit, keeping us caffeinated while showing us off the beaten path sights, answering ALL of our questions during our stops at Clava Cairns and Culloden, suggesting a great restaurant (Prime) and bookstore(Leakey's) in Inverness, allowing LOTS of shopping time, and finding the best spots for pictures while looking for Nessie! Thank you Steve!

Amazing Outlander Tour

Our tour with Steve was amazing! He personalized the tour for our needs and added in some special surprises that were some of my favorite parts of the whole trip to Scotland! He was very knowledgeable and explained the history of the Jacobite uprising, Culloden Battle, Fraser and Mackenzie clans, Clava Cairns, Loch Ness monster etc. He pointed out contributions from Diana Gabaldon on sites associated with Outlander. He also took us to many people sites and made sure we had plenty of time to walk around/take pictures etc. I would recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Inverness whether they have read/seen Outlander or not!

Our guide, Andrew, made our trip fabulous. He was knowledgeable of the area and wanted to help us have the best experience possible. We will definitely refer him to others.

Excellent Experience

Our guide for the day was Cecile. She was one of the most knowledgeable guides we have ever experienced. She was very accommodating in changing the standard itinerary for this tour so that it was more personalized to us. We were very impressed of her knowledge of history and historical points of interest even though she was not native to the British Isles. Overall, it was the best of all private tours we took during our 2 week visit to Scotland and Ireland. Would definitely seek her out again when we return to the area.

Andrew the tour was fantastic...

Andrew arrived at our hotel to pick us up at 9am and delivered us back at 5pm. In between was a phenomenal tour of many of the places or similar ones that we had read about in Outlander or seen in the series. We asked that he show us not only related Outlander places but to give us a FEEL for Scotland...and he outdid himself doing just that. We saw the simple beauty of the scottish highlands as he SANG to us different ballads and songs of the people ...giving us a feeling of the land and history. We walked Culloden meadow and walked and went the museum there, the history of Scotland is fraught with wars, we saw castles that were built some in1300 -1400 hundreds...and they still stand or parts of them do...their turrets jutting out so to be able to keep watch for danger...there is a sadness that permeates the land though... portrayed in the music and culture and ways throughout the highlands...a land of people that have always wanted the most basic desire...their freedom. We saw Bleuly Priory where Jamie and hid out after Culloden, Clava Cairns, Castle Leod a 14th Century Scottish Tower/Castle that still stands and has been in the the McKenzie family ever since... and the beautiful tree garden there.some of them hundreds of years old....we went to Wardlaw Mausoleum where the clan Frasers were buried...we saw Fortrose Cathedral...or what was left of it after Oliver Cromwell destroyed it and so many other beautiful buildings in his reign of terror ....(my opinion) We saw Chanonry Point where the dolphins play...and learned about the brahan castle seer a 17 th century seer who forsaw the deaths of 4 sons of Countess Isabella and she had him burned in a spiked barrel of tar! We went to the Clootie Well where people still take clothes or pieces of clothes of sick people in their family dip them in the water and hang them there ...the belief is that it will cure the sick person....and we went to a delightful pub for lunch and we couldn’t go to Cawdor Castle because the Duchess of Cawdor was in residence but we got to see it...and then the next day we went with Steve Cairns one of Andrews friends that took us on a day trip of the Isle of Skye...through the highlands...what a delightful treat and more of the beautiful scenery and life of the highlands...and another lunch ...although Steve does not sing he is a fount of information just like his friend Andrew....they really gave us the best of the best and we felt like we really got a feel for Scotland. Thank you both so very much. You made our trip.

The highlight of my travels

Keith made this tour an amazing day of journeying through time to see Outlander through Diana Gabaldon‘s eyes. Being a fan of both the books and TV series I felt like I was spending a day walking through history, and Keith’s knowledge of both the historical facts, Scottish myth and Diana’s creation process was very impressive. The personalised nature of this tour gave it an intimate feeling making it excellent value for money. Thank you again for creating such a special day that is now a cherished memory

Best day ever!!

What an amazing day!!! My mum and I had the pleasure of being in the company of (An)Gus for the day and what a fountain of knowledge he was. He had a schedule already planned but asked if there was anywhere in particular we wanted to go. As it was our first trip to this beautiful area of Scotland, we allowed him to take the helm. We went to so many Outlander locations like Castle Leod, Beauly Priory and of course Culloden Battlefield. However, just from our general queries and conversations, he also took us to beautiful photo spots and other locations full of myth and history that not only added to the Outlander experience but our time in Scotland in general. We have a big interest in clans and as our hotel was owned by Clan Davison, he was able to tell us about them. My boss at work is from clan McLeod and so he also showed us where they would have stood at the battle of Culloden. Gus was an absolute gent and a great character to spend the day with that I bought a TY Beanie Baby Highland Cow from Culloden gift shop because his name is Angus! When we returned back to our hotel, I couldn’t stop smiling. Absolutely, the best day of our trip!!! Thank you Gus!

Girls trip to the United Kingdom

This was a fantastic way to see a bunch of sights in the Inverness area of the Highlands. Loved the door to door service and Andrew was a very knowledgeable and friendly guide. For those of us who are fans of the Outlander series it was awesome to see some of the actual places from the stories.

Andrew was full of fun facts, really knows his Scottish History. He even sings on the tour. Very enjoyable.

Was the best part of our trip...

To start off, this tour was the one thing I really wanted to do while visiting Scotland. As most who do this tour, I'm a big Outlander fan as well. We were met at our hotel by our guide, Angus. From the moment we, myself, my husband and 15yr old son, met it was like exploring a new place with an old friend. Not only was Angus very knowledgable about Scottish history he was knowledgable about this beautiful town of Inverness. My only regret is that we didn't spend more time there. After seeing just about everything we could possibly see I made mention I needed to get a suitcase. I guess this is pretty common for tourist to gather all of those added trinkets and souviners and need an extra bag. Angus went out of his way to take us to a store and even helped us pick out a suitcase!!! The last comment was for his wife, thank you Angus. This was an exceptional tour and I highly recommend it. I'm sure all of the guides are exceptional but I have to say if you get a chance to do this tour please book with Angus. You will have a wonderful experience.

A trip through the highlands with Andrew

On our trip through the highlands with Andrew we got a trip we will never forget. Andrew’s knowledge of Scottish history, clans and outlander books and tv show is worth an award! We applaud his details in every myth, his ability to explain and tell stories all over. It was never quiet in the car, We had good and funny conversations throughout the tour! And Andrew makes the journey all worth it with his amazing character and knowledge! We got to see more than what we thought, and with Scottish Music playing, we felt the atmosphere! And for us outlander (tv-shows) fans, he knew sightings and explained what we needed, like what is different; history vs. fiction. We are most thankful and we will book more trips with Andrew in the future!

Great day in the Scottish Highlands!!!

We had originally booked another guide for an 11 hour tour of the Isle of Skye, but unfortunately she was sick the day of our outing. Andrew was sent as a replacement and he was wonderful!! He arrived in his traditional Scottish kilt and made our day. He was extremely knowledgeable about the history and other aspects of the countryside. He was easy to understand and went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience. Thank you. If you need a guide for the Highlands, he is your man..

Brilliant day out

Our guide for the day was Angus (Gus) and he was fab, as a local who has also taken the time to read the books he gave us a lot of local history - fact and fictional. He also allowed us to control the day and we squeezed in some dolphin watching and a short trip to Lock Ness. It was a excellent tour and well worth the money.

Fantastic Tour and Very Knowledgeable Guide

Took recently a private Outlander tour from Inverness and we were 3 people in the group. Andrew was a fantastic guide with lots of knowledge on Scottish Highlander history. Took us to the main and most important locations of the book and the ones that probably inspired a lot of the non historical locations or events. Scottish history from a real Scotsman!

Andrew took us on a wonderful tour of Outlander locations around Inverness, we were very pleasantly surprised with the amount of other information he was able to tell us. Culloden Battlefield was much more than we expected, highly recommend Andrew to anyone who wants to learn about the history of Scotland and visit many beautiful locations! Outlander Tour and More

We just returned from Scotland and I wanted to write this review to thank Andrew for the fabulous experience he provided to my husband and I while in Scotland. We love Outlander, but we aren't crazy fans either. We asked Andrew to customize the tour to provide us with insight into the TV show, and the real Scottish Highland history, of which we were truly interested. Well, he did so gladly, as only true Scotsman, with passion, love of country and a local Inverness resident can do, and we were spellbound. The entire day we traveled back in time learned about the writer of the Outlander, her inspiration for the books, history of clans, battles, local and national struggles of the Scottish people, culture, music and so much more. We are so grateful and would recommend this tour company to anyone traveling to Scotland! We will return for more!

Many visits to the great archaelological attraction over 4,000 years old, but now becoming popular with Outlander fans

Have often visited here, and observed and photographed it for its' historic significance. It is now frequented by Outlander fans who do not all seem to realise that this was a burial site not a film set - the Outlander 'story' came much later!.

<p>Our tour guide, Duncan was very versed in the entire history of the Highlands. He arrived on time and smartly dressed in Scottish attire, kilt and all. He exceeded our expectations and truly made the day an experience we will never forget. I would recommend the tour to anyone in the Inverness area. It was the first time we used a Private Tour and if we would gladly use this method again, especially if we were assured a guide like Duncan!</p>

Driver was only minimally familiar...

<p>Driver was only minimally familiar with Outlander book or movie. In fact, he has only watched the first one or two episodes of the movie. Tried to tell me that the stones in the photo and where we went were the ones in the movie -- NOT. The stones in the movie were a set. Would not take me to Ft. William, but insisted we go to Ft. George near the airport and the stones. On the positive side, Colloden was absolutely fabulous. Again, the tour guide did not know much about Culloden or its history. If you can get a guide that knows Scottish history and about Outlander, the trip would be useful. I did not feel like it was worth what I paid for the trip. Oh, and the tour guide was embarrassed by wearing a kilt -- guess it made him stand out as a tour guide or Scotsman???</p>

<p>The tour was one of my favorite things we did while in Scotland. Definitely worth it! Our guide Duncan Fraser made it the best experience. He was very friendly, knowledgeable, approachable and interested in getting my husband and I the very best experience we could have hoped for. I would book many more tours with these people, they were fabulous! The sights we saw were from the storyline and plus a lot more history information and sites as well. <p>We had a wonderful day with Andrew during our stay in Inverness. The trip itself was an amazing journey back in time, visiting many historical and Outlander related sites including Culloden Mor, Fort George, The Fraser Mausoleum, Castle Leod home of Clan Mackensie and of course the burial ground with the ancient stones. But honestly, the day was made by our guide and host Andrew. A charming Scottish gent in every sense and a passionate wealth of information on the history beyond the fiction of the books. If you knew nothing of Outlander, the trip would be worth it on its own merit. Then you would want to rush home and read the books or watch the series just to get more of the story. So thank you Andrew for a marvelous day! Cheers!</p>

<p>My tour guide was a full fledged Fraser, it doesn't get any better than that! As the only participant, I felt truly spoiled. It was a full day, and my brain was reeling from all the information. If I hadn't made a dinner appointment, we probably would have gone on beyond the 9 hours we spent seeing unforgetable locations relevant to the Outlander series/books. If you are an Outlander fan, this is a must. It also helps clarify some loose ends.</p>

<p>I enjoyed the tour. I learned a couple things and maybe my tour guide learned a little from me. Though I don't claim to be an Outlander Expert we always catch different details than someone else. The day started at 9:00 and ended at 4:00. No break for lunch with only a quick break for the restroom here and there. And we did not make it over to Loch Ness with the guide stating that since I had already been there we didn't have time to go over to the Loch. Hmm? All in all it was a good day though the price of 535.00 was too high for one person. If there were more people on my tour it would have been prorated per person. I see the reviews for Melissa - wish I could have had her as my guide. I love Inverness and the Outlander Experience was nice.</p>
