Outstanding Experience & Incredible Guides!

It's been 3 years since our Jeep tour with Nico and my girlfriend and I still consider it to be the best vacation day we've ever had together - and we've had a lot! We're still blown away by Nico's enthusiasm, professionalism, extensive knowledge of all things Madeira, sense of humor, off-road driving skills and exceptional ability to adapt to our interests. Seriously, Nico is a rare talent and his company offers a truly world class tour experience. Even if the weather isn't ideal for sightseeing/hiking/etc, this company will make sure you have an amazing day. We signed up for the tour mostly to see the beautiful mountain scenery and hike, but it was cloudy/rainy in the high terrain for most of the day. This was no problem at all for Nico. He used his impressive knowledge of the island to find us good view points despite the weather and, more importantly, talked us through many alternative activities that 1) we'd enjoy and 2) wouldn't be affected by the weather. The day was jam packed with breathtaking natural scenery, authentic cultural experiences, and engaging conversations with Nico about the island's history, economy, agriculture, and more (Nico's knowledge of the island is staggering - he's like a walking, talking encyclopedia with a great sense of humor). Instead of hiking, we wound up having one of the best (and most scenic) meals of our lives at a seafood restaurant on the beach (Nico left us to eat by ourselves - he had an uncanny ability to sense when we wanted to engage with him versus have our alone time). No way we would've found this spot or learned so much about Madeira without Nico. If you have a day in Madeira and want to explore the island, a Jeep tour with Up Mountain Madeira will blow you away!

Off roading is a must-do

Just finished an amazing tour with Up Mountain Madeira. The highlight of our cruise. Flat tire was handled with no issue and the true test of a company is how they handle issues. Our guide was informative and made sure we got to see everything we wanted to see. Wish we had more time but our cruise made such a short stop here. They definitely made sure we were able make the most of our day and get back to the ship in plenty of time.

Fun and fast day in Madeira

Thank you! Kiitos! Tack! Gracias! Our jeep-safari with Diogo was the very best part of our holiday. Day was warm and it feels so good to drive open roof all over the island. We went many places, Pico do Arieero, Santana, Porto da Cruz and of course off-road. It was really nice to visit real Santana-house and found out how spacious it was, and lovely lady who lives there. Maybe I would like to go next time somewhere less tourists (Arieero is nowadays full of us!) Diogo has soooo good sense of humor and he speak very good english. He also told us living in Madeira, wages, prices, school etc. which is very interesting. Booking was easy and Nico answered my questions quickly. Overall very good day. Awesome day out!!

Diego was the most wonderful driver and host! We travelled to the west then the north coast. Saw that magical black sand and did some great off road driving. We loved learning all about the flowers and trees and fruits etc. We all felt very looked after and had the best day ever! Diego was funny, knowledgeable and made the day perfect. We will definitely book again the next time we visit Madeira.

Amazing Customized Private Tour!

I highly recommend Up Mountain Madeira! My group of four did a private 4x4 off road jeep tour that we personalized with Nico to give us the best use of our short trip to Madeira. This small company felt much more authentic and welcoming to us than the touristy competitors. We started with a sunrise hike, then went to to several locations in central and southern Madeira. Our favorite stop was the lunch recommendation of Faja dos Padres. After our weekend vacation to Madeira ended, we agreed the tour was full of stops would not have found on our own, or would not have wanted to drive our own rental car to, as the streets are very steep and narrow! We felt our tour showed the true culture of the island, and not just tourist stops. Tiago was the perfect tour guide! He was funny, full of energy, and a true local of the island. After 10 days all over Portugal, we were still talking about Tiago and our Jeep tour with UMM as our favorite day of the trip!

A Trip Highlight: Beautiful, Fun and Exhilarating!

Over a 2-week trip to Portugal with my wife and 23 year year old daughter that included Madeira, riding in an open air jeep through the western part of the of the island was one of the top highlights of our trip. This company was recommended to us by a Portugal travel consultant, and the experience was fun, beautiful, and exhilarating! Although we had a general itinerary from Up Mountain, our guide Diogo customized the trip for us, regularly checking in to make sure we were prioritizing our time for the things we most enjoyed. We especially loved the excitement of "off roading" in the middle of lush forests. Diogo was fantastic--energetic, knowledgable, funny, and a very skilled driver, navigating over the various terrains of the mountain. We also used Up Mountain for a wonderful Levada hike (reviewed separately). Great company; great experience! We highly recommend Up Mountain and the jeep tour!

Amazing!

We had the most brilliant tours with Diago. He was so knowledgeable and humorous. He knew to change the tour so we had sunshine at the top of the mountain while Funchal was in cloud. The scenery took my breath away. It was like looking at clouds from an aeroplane. Thank you so very much Diago. We will definitely recommend you.

Breathing and memorable experience

Unforgettable experience

We booked tour for 6 persons with open rooftop jeep and couldn't be more satisfied with our choice. Our driver Ricardo was amazing, checking out the weather conditions so we could have the best trip. He know and showed us local herbs, the best lunch place and made us drink lot of local drinks (can't complain about that). Highly recommend anyone to experience Madeira vibe with these tours!

Great full day Madeira Tour

Had a great full day private Jeep tour with Up Mountain Madeira. They were very easy to deal with. Good communication and very professional. Victor was an experienced and fun guide. In addition to seeing some incredible sights, I think we got a more local view of life on Madeira. I especially appreciate that he stopped to let us sample local fruits and get a closer view of interesting plants that he saw along the way. Highly recommend this company!

Beautiful Experience

What can I say!!! This excursion was out of this world. Our tour guide Diego was 10 out of 10 and took us around the unspoiled areas of Maderia. Diego took us to the highest point on the mountainous island and showed us the different fruits grown around the island. Also, Diego took us to a private beach area and the food at the restaurant was delicious. My family really liked Diego and he made this excursion really fun and adventurous that we will never forget. VIP Experience

Our day was customized to exactly what we requested. Migel did a fantastic job planning our itinerary and added destinations that were not on our list. He was fun and informative. We had a VIP experience. This was a great way to see the island without the stress that some of the busier and popular locations can create. Loved it!

Breathtaking Madeira

Nico was amazing. We were met at out Hotel and whisked away to see the true Madeira. A amazing day with a lovely lunch at the bottom of Praia da Fajã dos Padres cable car. The sea was sadly too rough to go in, but it didn't spoil our day. The 4x4 tour over the mountains was breathtaking A truly wonderful day with an amazing and friendly guide. Thank you Nico, for a truly unforgettable experience.

4x4 private jeep tour

Fantastic day out, would 100% recommend. Loved by both adults and kids (age 15, 12, 10, 10 & 6). Got to see everything we wanted at our own pace, added in an extra stop to Skywalk when we requested, no problem at all. Diego was a brilliant guide, knowledgable, funny and really good with the children. Favourite bit for children - standing up in the back of the jeep, going off road through the forrest, and for adults - getting to see so much of Madeira in a fun way, with a great guide.

Two great experiences with UpMountain Madeira!

We went on two tours with UpMountain Madeira - a full day tour of the West of the Island, and a sunrise tour. Both were with Diego, and were amazing. Diego is a superb guide for the flora and fauna of Madeira, and his his knowledge of the island and engaging personality made for great days out. Would highly recommend, and will definitely use them again if/when we return to Madeira.

Fun and worth every cent, a must do in Madeira!

Diogo gave us an fantastic tour of beautiful Madeira. He was enthusiastic and friendly great with the family and adults. His personality and fun sense of humor made the tour even more memorable and we are very thankful. We did the coastal scenery and the we wanted to experience some 4WDriving, my teenage kids had the best time and we all laughed and enjoyed the ride. If you want a tour guide that will show you around and make things fun and light hearted while being professional and having great knowledge of the island, don’t look any further! Last Minute Customizable Unique Experience

We had the unfortunate experience of our plane being unable to land in Madeira the night before our tour experience due to high winds and the plane turned back to Lisbon. On the next day, at the last minute before the tour start time while on Lisbon's airport tarmac, I was able to contact the team the early morning of our tour informing them that our plane would not land until after the tour start time. It was not a problem (thank god) as we agreed that the tour could be customizable to start at a later time. Nevertheless, our guide arrived at our hotel waiting patiently while we dropped our luggage, changed clothes and brushed up and then eventually started the tour around 10:45 a.m. This was a fantastic way to start experiencing Madeira. We loved the open jeep, being able to stand up while on the off roads and in the mountains, and the gorgeous views: Santa Cruz, Machico, Santana, Funchal's Monte, Porto de Cruz, Pico Ruivo and more. Loved that we could eat the fresh fruits from the trees and drink fresh water from the mountain waterfalls. Overall, this was a very enjoyable tour and it felt as though we were in Jurassic Park when we were on the off road trails in between the mountain valleys. Thank You for the Memorable Unique Experience; and for returning my early phone call the day of the tour.

A Day We'll Never Forget w/ Something for Everyone

Rico worked with us prior to select just the right itinerary to fit our interests. The day of, Diego, our guide, got to know us and threw in a few more quick suggestions for us to choose from based on our varying interest in a family of 4 with a tween & teen. By the end, EVERYONE had fun and rated it 5 out of 5. We enjoyed the glass cliff walk, rainforest waterfalls and island history, learning about agriculture, the cave walk by the ocean, wine tasting, Sexial volcanic beach & the hit for the kids was Porto Moritz natural pools. All in all, the best experience I've had with Viator and we've used them in the US, UK, Italy & several Carribean islands.

A great day out

Great communication with the team, was able to arrange an early start so we could see the sunrise up a mountain. Our driver Ricardo was fun and helpful, took us to some great places we would not have found on our own.

A Fun Day Out

Diego, was prompt, very friendly and took us out for the day and we had simply a great time exploring an island we did not know. The two of us were bounced around in the back of the UMM vehicle on and off road, stopping to see the views, the flora and learn about the island. A highlight was a beach side lunch at a restarunt only accessible by cable car. We saw a line of Range Rovers taking cruise ship visitors on their tour and were not envious. Our experience felt like it was much more fun.

A first-hand experience of Madeira's natural beauty.

We enjoyed private tours on 2 days with Upmountain. The first was a sunrise tour on the eastern side of the island with Nico. We initially planned on driving to Pico do Areeira but the local cam showed the cloud cover was too dense. Our itinerary changed for the better on the fly, something we couldn't have done without Nico's experience. The second day we circled the west side of Madeira with Diego. On both days we were treated to personal knowledge of the natural history, flora and peoples of Madeira that you won't find in a guidebook. We were able to choose what we did and how long we spent at each stop. This is an exceptional way to ride the twisting mountainous roads of this beautiful island.

Fantastic experience!

This was an amazing experience! Our guide Vitor was very knowledgeable about the Island in every way. We received the personalized service that you would expect for a private tour. We enjoyed meeting with the locals and even stopped by his sisters house for a glass of wine! The off road adventure part was great as well. We highly recommend this tour 👌.

4x4 madeira central and east coast

Fantastic day out. Our tour guide Diego was very knowledgeable and friendly. His enthusiasm and love for the Island was infectious. The day was planned to suit 3 generations of family. Would highly recommend.

Thrilling, but safe, ride

Our group of five had such a great time on this tour. Our driver, Ricardo, was very friendly, entertaining, and quite knowledgeable about the island and its trees and plants. He suggested a tour of the western part of the island, which had better weather that day. The tour lasted all day from a 9:00 AM pick-up to a drop off back in Funchal after 5:00 PM. The tour was a good mix of stops in several scenic towns with some fun off-roading in between. Our group all claim that this tour was the highlight of our Portugal trip. Don’t miss it.

Perfect Way to Visit the Island!

This was an amazing tour! We did the west side of the island one day and then the east side the next. Super fun for my 3 kids and my wife and I loved it too. We saw so much! Such an amazing place! Thank you Edgar for being so amazing! So great!

Fun day on a gorgeous island!

We had a fantastic day with Edgar. We were only in Madeira for one day during a cruise ship port stop, and Nico worked with me to design a fun itinerary that covered many places on the island. Well worth our time and money!

Another great experience with Up Mountain. This has become a regular for us now. Knowledgeable driver with a great sense of humour he pointed out so many flora and answered all our questions. The choice of where to go made the whole day personal to us. And of course the best bit was going off road through the forest in an exciting fast drive through the mud. Thanks so much. Highlight of our Madeira trip!

Edgar brought us on a tour today and was very flexible in changing the itinerary so we could make the best of the weather. Had fantastic swim in Porto Moniz followed by great "off road" experience and plenty of stops to see the beautiful sights of Madeira . Highlight of our visit to Madeira!

Perfect day in Madeira

Perfect day!! …We will never forget this amazing day of exploration with Edgar…the highlight of our trip to Madeira. Edgar was funny, interesting, knowledgeable and he took his time. I was with my two teens and felt completely safe…he took us to some unbelievable places, everything was easy and pleasant. My kids loved standing up in the jeep as we came down the mountain. Also the lunch spot he took us to was possibly one of the nicest places I’ve ever been to. Worth every penny. Thank you so much!!!

Easy breezy and enjoyable

Nicolau was amazing he was very knowledgeable and funny. Time flew by I really enjoyed my experience as we were short on time and hit all the spots we wanted to see. I will recommend him to any of my family and friends next time they come to Madeira. 5 stars ⭐️

Had a great experience with Nicolau. Visited Madeira with my girlfriend and sister , had a cool off roading experience , saw some nice sights which were explained well, a good restaurant stop and really enjoyed being in the old Portuguese army jeep, 5/5

Worth it

Nicolau was an amazing tour guide. It was just 3 of us. The jeep was comfortable with lots of space to take pictures. Nicolau gave interesting information and not too overwhelming. 10/10 would recommend.

Unforgettable 4x4 experience with professional and knowledgeable guide

We arranged a 4x4 full day private tour on the Far West route. We had an amazing and unforgettable day. Edgar was our guide and driver. He was professional, cheerful, polite and very informative. We felt safe in his hands. The trip included some of the old roads on the island, an incredible off road section, a 30 min Levada walk and lots of stops at other interesting sites with lunch at Porto Moniz. The 4x4 was a Vintage Portuguese Military vehicle that was very comfortable and managed all the terrain without any difficulty. The open top made for great viewing and it was exhilarating to be able to stand for some of the sections. Thank you Edgar - we would have no hesitation in travelling with you again

South west fishing villages and distillery

So nice to see a bit more of Madeira which is off the beaten track. Edgar was our brilliant guide and we had a really lovely day. Fantastic views and Edgar was very pleasant and informative. I highly recommend this company. So nice not to be in big groups struggling to hear what the tour guides are saying. Thank you for another brilliant trip Edgar and Nico.
