An entertaining ghost tour combined with the history of the Vaults of Edinburgh. Marie is an excellent storyteller. Overall a lot of fun!

Fabulous evening

Aniela was absolutely fantastic. She took us back into the times and was especially mindful of spooking the horror loving 8 year old, just the right amount! We did another ghost tour but it didn't match the level of detail and engagement of this one.

Interesting and disturbing. Must do!

First, our tour guide, Caelyn, was such a great storyteller! WOW, she made the tour come alive! There was so much history of the city we learned on this tour and the underground vaults were so interesting and combined with Caelyn’s telling of the awful conditions and experiences that occurred there, it was a memorable excursion. Highly recommend it.

Spooky, I had a paranormal experience! I'll be back.

The tour was amazing. It was the ghost tour and I even had an experience in the vaults! I recomend this and i'll be back next time to enjoy another tour.

A memorable tour underground.

We had a fantastic time on this tour. Loads of really interesting facts and stories of times gone by in Edinburgh. It was so well put across by our guide Linda. She had a wonderful way of communicating with us all, and had a real twinkle in her eye! Thanks so much to her. Our friend is sure she felt a coldness across her shoulders as we journeyed through the vaults in the darkness! It was all very entertaining, interesting and atmospheric. Good value for money, and we are happy to recommend.

Informative and entertaining

The team (Rory and Shannon) were very helpful and informative, Shannon was our guide and did a great job of bringing the past to life and retelling stories of what had occurred in the Edinburgh vaults all those years ago, she set the scene extremely well, thank you.

Scary tour through the vaults

An amazing tour through the vaults off Edinburgh, guide Aniela made the tour extra special with her very believable story telling.

An exciting and private experience, travelling back through time.

What an immersive experience that really taught us some truly disgusting history and gave some fascinating insights in to the events and horror that have graced the hilly streets and lanes of Edinburgh. Our guide Aniela was very knowledgable, engaging, friendly and created great drama which really added to the experience, thank you Aniela. The tour covers a small area but when you're taken down the alleyways on different sides of the Royal Mile, it seems like you've really travelled back in time. The personal headsets were a godsend and very well organised by the company. It gives you a sort of private tour feel in the middle of a busy city. The end of the tour was exhilarating and dramatic but I won't spoil anything.... Definitely recommended with the only advice that mobility is a requirement.

Fun way to spend an hour

A little corny but quite fun. Learned a lot about the history of Edinburgh. Out tour guide, Angela was a great actress setting the atmosphere!

Fun Spooky Tour

This was a unique tour that gave us some interesting history and brought us to parts of the city we would not have seen otherwise. We enjoyed the story telling and the bit of creepiness.

A walk in the past

A walk underground where people lived. Insight into things they did. For anyone really into ghosts and experiences would have been great. For me, just a walk underground.

Diving into Darkness with Mercat's Ghostly Underground Vaults tour

I joined the Ghostly Underground tour, where we explored the eerie depths of Mercat's exclusive Blair Street vaults. The guide was quite seasoned and knowledgeable, who narrated chilling stories of Edinburgh's haunting past, and shared paranormal encounters from previous tours - giving a thrilling and unforgettable experience.

Time killer, that's all

Definitely not the best tour I have done with Viator. Guides had good knowledge of the history, but really lacked in the acting. I actually expected to see more

Great stories & cool location

We went to the Hidden and Haunted (adults only) ghost tour. I love a ghost tour and have been on them in different cities but this one was the best I’ve ever been on. Our tour guide, Sarah, was amazing. Such a great storyteller. We had fun and it was the perfect end to our day.

Excellent tour of the underground vaults. Frank was amazing at explaining every spooky detail and had you invested in no time! def take this tour, you will enjoy it!

Great ghost tour.

Had an experienced tour guide and a newer tour guide but both did a great job and really enjoyed our time. The vaults are interesting as one might hope.

Linda is a fantastic tour leader and really brought the history and the ghosts to life! She is totally engaging, very witty and knowledgeable. We would totally recommend this tour as it is entertaining and deepens your understanding of the history of Edinburgh.

Great Little Tour!

Very informative tour - really sets the mood with the stories in the vaults. It definitely has a strange vibe but nothing too unusual! Cool to see underground. Shout out to Veni and Aniela for being so lovely and making us feel comfortable

Scary

Our tour guide, Anastasia, was enthusiastic, passionate, and theatrical. Her presence from the beginning created a spooky atmosphere which was great and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Into the close and down to the vaults

While learning about the close and the tall tenement style buildings was interesting, the underground to the vaults were a point of fascination. The guide was very entertaining when sharing the cool ghost stories.

Very informative tour, certainly creepy!

My sister and I booked this whilst on our trip to Edinburgh, we were expecting just an underground tour of the Vaults but it was much more informative than that. Anilea and Stephanie were amazing tour guides! We started at the Mercat Cross where they gave us a dramatic and detailed description of the torture that took place there before we moved on to two different alley ways where they told us of different historical events. We then made our way to the Vaults. We were warned that it would be creepy and it was. Both guides told us of creepy events in the Vaults history, and warned that one of the ghosts might be more active than others so we were all on edge a bit, but it was all good fun. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh!

Amazing from start to Finish!

We visited on a rainy day in March but that did not stop how fabulous our experience was from start to finish. We had 2 amazing tour guides called Fay and Frank. The girls were brilliant at theatrical story telling and really set the spooky atmosphere. The vaults was the highlight and hearing about all the ghosts and as fascinating. A different, yet brilliant, way to introduce the history of Edinburgh. We got given headphones and the tour guided wear a mic so that everyone can hear ( really helped especially when walking through the streets). I felt safe the whole time. I loved how they welcomed any experiences with the ghosts and were so enthusiastic about their jobs. Thank you Fay and Frank. If anyone is wondering.. no one jumps out at you and it isn’t a “scare” event. It is a tour of some gory hot spots around the Mercat monument and then a tour of the Vaults with added ghost stories.

Scary ghost stories and vault tour.

This was such a fun tour of the Blair Vaults and ghosts. Anastasia was a fantastic tour guide and scary storyteller. Highly recommend!

Great tour for something spooky and fun!

Me and my husband decided on a ghost tour whilst away on holiday in Edinburgh, and Linda was our guide, and she was great! It was nice to learn, but it was also a good laugh. Upon entering the vaults, it felt so spooky, and I love anything paranormal, so this was my kind of thing! definitely next time I will be doing another and maybe something extra scary! All in all, I'd recommend this tour, and I will certainly be back to do another at some point soon.

Brilliant, highly recommend

Absolutely brilliant. I went with my 15yo daughter, we booked a day or two in advance while on holiday to Edinburgh. Thoroughly enjoyed it, really informative, funny & a little bit scarey! 👻 Linda was fantastic, Thank you! Oh and we can't wait to go back!

Fantastic tour and our guide, Nicola, was absolutely brilliant - engaging and both funny and scary! So interesting and spooky going down into the vaults, a part of Edinburgh you’d never know is there! Highly recommend this tour!

Vault tour - Great fun

Well worth it. It was fun and informative. Our guide, Vinni, was great. I enjoyed the history. The headphone system was great since my hearing is not great It was a great way to spend an hour or so.

Great tour, it was really fun to see the vaults. Lots of spooky stories and Linda really brought them all to life, she was fab!

An unique and unforgettable guided tour

This guided tour was so incredibly brilliant! Our guide, Anastasia, shared tales with such charisma, talent, and knowledge that made us all dive very deep into the dark side of Edinburgh. The underground walk was honestly spooktastic and extremely satisfying for history and ghost story lovers alike. The visit concludes with a detailed exhibition room that adds some extra quality to the whole experience. Highly recommended!

Entertaining and informative

A very interesting tour, even though it was not the one we’d booked due to a guides illness. Our guide, Linda was lovely with something of the Susan Calman about her and very entertaining. In all an enjoyable experience.

More than just ghosts!

I loved how this tour balanced spooky stories with the real, often disturbing, history of Edinburgh. The underground vaults were particularly fascinating, and brought to life just how hard living conditions must have been. Our guides Emma and Sarah were knowledgeable and I appreciated that the focus included both historical and spooky tales!

Artist private tour

I recently took a private tour to the vaults to photograph and do in situ sketches for my art work. Mercat was an incredibly accommodating company and I am so grateful for them allowing and accompanying me to the vaults to complete this research. Linda my tour guide was amazing, so knowledgeable and clearly committed to her role, it was a wonderful experience being within the vaults drawing, listening to her stories about the spaces. Will 100% be looking to book again in the future.

Amazing story telling and spooky vaults

This tour was super spooky and eerie. Our tour guide, Fay, was the best. The way she told the stories was just fantastic. It's super interesting, with some humor now and then. I would definitely recommend doing a tour when visiting Edinburgh. Next time, we'll do another tour with Mercat for sure.

Amazing story telling from Nicola

We had a fantastic time on this tour. It's something a little bit different and so entertaining. Our guide made us feel so welcome and the tour was really interesting.

Loved it

We really enjoyed this tour. Not sure if I’ve selected the correct one but it was the over 18s tour at 8pm where we learnt about some dark history and horrible people and our underground vault tour was very scary! Our tour guide was Ross and he was amazing!!!

Great tour

This was a great tour which lasted about 1hr 15mins. Our tour guide was Nicola who brought the Edinburgh Closes to life with dramatic stories of old. The trip then progressed into the vaults below the south bridge with wonderful stories of what occurred there in the past and further stories of ghosts brought to a dramatic conclusion by Nicola. Super trip and would highly recommend it.

Great experience for curious enthusiasts

We did the Hidden and haunted tour a cold evening in February - perfect ambiance of the ghost tour. We were choosing between this tour and the Mary Kings Close, but chose this to get the best of both - tour the underground vault and get a fun out-of-the-ordinary experience. Our guide Nicola was enthusiastic, funny and very friendly. Thanks to her, our experience was a total 5/5. We had a great time and we would love to do it again. Highly recommend!

Fascinating insight into life in the vaults and a first class story teller as our guide

I loved this. Margaret Ann was our tour guide, and she was a first class story teller. Gave us a really great background to the vaults, and made the visit fascinating and only a little bit creepy. Really appreciated that the focus was on real stories without any gimmicky stuff leaping out to scare us.

Underground ghosts

Really recommend, great adults-only ghost walk. About 20 minutes above ground and then the rest of the tour is in the Blair Street vaults. Well worth the price of admission.
