Long commute - Beautiful Katherine Gorge

Katherine Gorge + cruise of two gorges is memorable + beautiful. Edith Falls, particularly for the swimmers, is refreshing + scenic. The war cemetary was poignant + interesting. Buffet lunch excellent. Coffee-tea-food breaks morning + afternoon were a bit ordinary 6am pickup from the hotel + 8.50pm return. Approximately 15 hours not including the taxi to the pick-up point. For a day tour it is an extremely long time in the bus for relatively short time at stops + exhausting. But if you want to see Katherine Gorge + do not have your own transport the tours offer the opportunity to do so.

Beautiful Kathrine Gorge

People should know this is a very long day before they book. The coach was very comfortable & quite luxurious, so that helped with the long drive. Shawn, our driver & captain for the day was very informative and spoke about interesting things along the way. Edith Falls was a lovely place for a very quick dip & a drink. The lunch buffet was delicious & plentiful too! Katherine Gorge itself was stunning. The boat ride was very enjoyable & we saw a few freshwater crocs. This tour was worth doing & we enjoyed it very much. Please read the description carefully & look at a map to decide for yourself if you can go the distance! Highly recommended.

An excellent full day for a tour with a few extra days stay in Darwin.

Coming from the South west Districts of Victoria to be in Darwin is a huge change, add on the tour to Katherine Gorge. The full day tour was great and ,amazing to see the countryside so similar to the national parks of South Africa, almost expecting to see a herd of Zebra or Elephant. The tour Company, AAT King, what a professional slick and accomplished tour company with our coach Captain, Sean an absolute delight. I highly recommend the day tour to Katherine Gorge including a fabulous lunch. Just be prepared for a full day. Gary Ludlow.

Very good

Sean our operator was excellent,beautiful lunch at Katherine Gorge,a lot of distance to cover in 1 day so you had to limit the amount of sites you could stop at.

A Great Experience

This was a great trip. The coach was very comfortable, and Maurie and Chris were great as guide and driver respectively. Maurie's commentary was mist informative and interesting. The Adelaide River War Cemetery and Edith Falls are worth a visit, but the highlight was the cruise down the Gorge - stunning.

Was amazing. Really scenic. Sean from AAT tours was a top oka bloke. The Dingos breakfast was a little bit average though.

Spectacular

Katherine Gorge was amazing. Tour guide was excellent with a vast array of knowledge throughout the whole trip.

Great trip (long day but well worth it)

Mark our driver and guide was excellent with the right amount of informative explanation and quiet time so we could catch some sleep on this long drive. Jamie on the Nitmiluk boat was also fantastic in his detailed commentary. Both ensured our safety. Mark’s stops ran smoothly to time and we had adequate time at each including him being flexible in allowing us to climb up to the upper pool when swimming was not allowed at the main pool at Edith falls. The lunch was wonderful and I loved the crocodile roll.

Long road to a great experience

Katherine Gorge was a most memorable time for us. The tour was run like clockwork with really no issues. Except, the online itinerary stated the opportunity to swim at Edith falls. We took the appropriate clothing only to be told there was no swimming because of crocodiles. Wifi and in seat USB connections were unavailable. It is a long day of travelling, however the destinations are well worth it. 14 hours in total. April is just before the peak season starts, therefore a little quieter and not a full coach. Our pick up point was the Vibe Hotel which is where we stayed.

Great time spent in Darwin

Trip to Darwin was great except for 2 tours being cancelled due to lack of numbers, beautiful weather and scenery. Museums where great.

The Katherine Gorge was absolutely beautiful. So worth the long travel, and the tour guides were wonderful.

Many sights, long day

Very enjoyable boat tour of Katherine gorge. Excellent driver/guide. Lunch meh, but air conditioned. Would highly recommend AAT Kings.

Very Good

The Adelaide River Memorial is a must. As an Australian, it was so impactful to see how many lost their lives in the bombings of Darwin. I say bombings because Darwin was bombed over 60 times, spanning nearly 2 years. The Katherine Gorge cruise was fantastic, our guide was a local Aboriginal man who was very knowledgeable. The lunch was a really good buffet. We were a bit unlucky as our bus broke down at Adelaide River meaning we didn't get to see Pine Creek as we had to wait for a replacement bus.

Fantastic experience

Bloody awesome

The sights were jaw dropping...mother nature is amazing! As was the Rainbow Serpent 🐍 The boat driver was very informative and looked after us well and he was great at informing us on the aboriginal story's of the gorges.

Katherine Gorge and Edith Falls

The highlight of the trip for me was swimming at Edith Falls, the water was beautiful and the scenery was amazing! Would have loved to have spend an extra 30 minutes here to really enjoy the place! Lunch was served fresh and plentiful - Lasagne and veggies, cold meats and salad. Beautifully prepared! The Katherine Gorge did not disappoint and some amazing photos taken that still could not capture the beauty of the gorge.

Gorges are a wow factor

A great day tour, but expect a long day. We got picked up at 6.15 and headed to the Adelaide River cemetery where we were able to walk around and see the memorial for the WWII casualties. We then went to Edith Falls for a quick swim. It was worth the swim, but the water is incredibly cold. There are facilities to get changed before hopping back on the bus and a kiosk to buy anything if needed. We then headed to Katherine Gorge where we had a buffet lunch before heading to the boat for our cruise. Note the bats in the trees at the front of the restaurant. We hopped on the cruise and our guide was very informative. We hopped off the first boat, had a look at rock art and walked to the next gorge to get onto the second boat. The walk was relatively easily accessible and the guide told us where to walk and where to be careful as some of the rock was slippery. We then hopped onto the second gorge, which had much steeper sided gorges. It was all a wow factor and just so much to take in and look at. We then had a bid drive back to Darwin, stopping at the 303 bar at Adelaide river where they had the stuffed buffalo from crocodile Dundee and didn’t get back til 8.30pm that night, so just note that most eating places are closed and maybe grab something on the last stop.

A great day exploring beyond Darwin

Wonderful adventure, a long day on the bus but was exactly what we booked and very comfortable. Our bus driver/tour guide was excellent... informative, interesting, friendly, helpful and great sense of humour. Everything was well organised.

Highly recommend this...

Highly recommend this trip. It’s a long day but worthwhile. Our coach driver was very informative and we felt safe at all times. We were a little disappointed in the lunch. Not enough for such a large group. Also, no sanitizer available pre self serve. A few passengers had coughs on board, so this made it even worse. Overall, a beautiful day.

It was spoilt by the bus driver. She rushed us through every stop, late to get going, no help to elderly no toilet or WiFi??

Late to leave, 45 mins after pick up. Rushed through every stop. Unhelpful driver. Lack of info, bus not as advertised. Guide at Katherine Gorge however, was wonderful. Unfortunate bus experience would not use this company again

Excellent day out to see a great part of NT

Mel, our coach driver/tour guide was fantastic. She was really informative and interesting. Lunch at the Katherine Gorge information centre was excellent, a great range to choose from the buffet and beautiful spot to sit and eat. The gorge cruise was worth the long day trip. Our stop at Edith falls was also a beautiful spot.

On the go but a great day plenty to see.

Mel was our driver for the trip she was very informative of where we were n lovely personality. The day flowed so well. Would recommend this trip.

Spectacularly beautiful

Michael our driver was very knowledgeable and full of facts and stories. Supplied lunch was great. It was great to hear the stories of The tour guids on the cruise. The love for their land shows.

Lovely cruise in the Katherine gorges but a very long day

Katherine Gorge cruise was very good. The guides provide helpful commentary. Tour guide, Sandy was very good. It is a very long day, almost 15 hours, with very early start. AAT KINGS should consider an “express” version of the tour with the primary focus of the Katherine gorge. Apart from the gorge cruise the rest of the stops can be skipped. Alternatively for those with time, a 2 day tour with overnight at Nitmulik would be a great option with sunset cruise, morning cruise and helicopter flight options.

Excellent day tour

The Katherine Gorge day trip and cruise was an excellent day out. Our guide Mel was very knowledgeable and personable. The buffet lunch provided was very nice in a restful and comfortable location. Breathtaking scenery and well worth the visit.

Katherine Gorge day trip

Great tour. Mel our bus driver and guide was fantastic, very knowledgeable on the area and provided lots of tips along the way to make our day easy. WWII cemetery was worth seeing. Buffet lunch at Katherine Gorge was good. Our guide on the Katherine Gorge tour was fantastic and gave us an insight into aboriginal life in the area. Coach was comfortable for the long trip.

Great day trip.

An exceptional day out. Bus was comfy, our guide/driver, Mel (I think) was so full of knowledge, very friendly and approachable. Adelaide River is great, pit stops along the way were good. Edith Falls amazing! Only disappointment was the so called buffet lunch. Not really a buffet per say, it had lasagna, roast potatoes and slaw salad, bit of lettuce, croc sausage roll and a tiny piece of carrot cake id advise buying ftom cafe there, coffee was great Katherine Gorge, Nitmiluk was absolutely beautiful and definitely needs the boat ride to appreciate it, Jamie the boat driver/guide was informative and funny. We definitely recommend this day trip highly!

Fantastic tour well worth the time

Katherine Gorge cruise. Spectacular. Tour guide excellent with information on geology, history, traditional owners, wildlife, plants. Adelaide River cemetery, memorial and reminder of Darwin WW2 history. Tour guide/driver Mark was great. Lots of information and entertaining as well, made the long drive much easier.

Fantastic tour well worth the time

What a fantastic day. Yes it was a long day tour, but was made so much easier with interesting, knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide/driver Mark. The hours sitting in the coach passed so much quicker than we expected. Adelaide River cemetery attractive and well maintained , and a further insight into Darwin in WW2. Edith falls another interesting area and a break from the drive. Of course the highlight was the Katherine Gorge cruise. So much more spectacular in real life. The tour guide gave us so much background information. Geology, traditional owners, plants, local wildlife. Unfortunately did not see a crocodile this time but lots of facts on them. I would certainly recommend doing this tour and AAT are to be complimented on how well it was run.

An Amazing Experience

Katherine gorge is even more incredible than you’ve imagined. The sandstone cliffs are breathtaking and you can almost feel the ancient spirits of the place as you glide down the gorge. While trying to dock so passengers could transfer from the upper gorge to the middle gorge, our boat became stranded on the rocks. I know the skipper was terribly embarrassed, especially as several passengers began offering so called ‘expert’ advice. We were held up for 45 minutes until the cavalry arrived but it was all great fun (see photo of our stranded boat). Our AAT Kings tour also took in Edith Falls allowing enough time for a swim in the magical environs. If you can swim, do it! You won’t regret it. Just one thing to be wary of though. Given the distance from Darwin, this is a very, very long day trip. We were out of our hotel at 5:30am to get to the nominated pick up spot at 6.00am, and we weren’t back in our hotel until after 9:30pm. For us though, it was absolutely worth it. Just don’t book another long tour the day before or after!! A big shout out to Sue from the AAT Kings office in Darwin for finding and returning my prescription sunglasses that I left on the bus. Thanks muchly Sue!!!

Easy relaxing Way to see Katherine Gorges-great insight into history of the areas we travelled through.

The trip was an easy relaxing way to see Katherine without driving ourself. The driver/tour guide was friendly and informative without talking for the sake of talking. Our stop at Adelaide Cemetery was very very moving as was our trip and boat driver commentary while cruising on Katherine Gorge. Well worth the cost. Only negative was the long walk to the boat. When I was there years ago it was much more accessible especially for people like me with mobility challenges.

A must do for a visit to Darwin.

The cruise in the gorges was truly memorable. It was worth the long day. A part of Australia everyone should see.

Rushed

The gorge and Edith falls are a top end must see. The swim needed to be longer. Too much time at the war memorial. The whole trip was too rushed. Would have been better to drop one thing from the agenda and allow enough time for one drink at the famous pub on the way back.

Katherine Adventure

The scenery in the Katherine Gorges was spectacular and the commentary on the boats was informative. Our tour guide Anthony was good and the day although long was worth the time and we would recommend the trip to family and friends.

Brilliant day

The views from the gorge of the river and orange tinged cliffs in the afternoon sunlight. The boat trips through two separate gorges with a short walk between was comfortable and manageable for people with normal walking ability. The staff on the bus and boat were attentive to the needs of the group and their commentaries were excellent.
