Cambridge - Shared Punting Tour

Funny guide, great stories, memorable experience.

My family (wife, 9 year and 4 year old) & I took the shared punting tour and we had a memorable time. Our friendly and funny guide John kept us engaged throughout the trip and the trip lasted 10-15 mins more than the expected 50 mins time. Richard patiently answered our questions, shared the rich history behind the city, university, alumni, bridges, kings and queens and we got a good dose of Cambridge history from this trip. Strongly recommend anyone who is looking for a fun way to explore Cambridge. Our daughter rated this as one of her top experiences during our London visit.

Excellent punting company with the best team

Rutherford's punting company is an excellent and professional punting tour operator. They were extremely understanding of our situation and accommodated us onto a subsequent trip as we were delayed in arriving at Cambridge by train. David our guide was very kind and ensured that our mobility needs were met and prioritised our comfort at all times. I would definitely recommend this company to friends and family. Well done team!

Punting in Cambridge

The punt was very comfortable and the scenery was well worth the trip. Our guide could have had better banter, but was very skilled maneuvering the punt. He was very personable, just not a showman. Overall it was a lovely experience.

Great informative punting tour!

Booked online just before doing the tour as it was cheaper then paying where the tours start at Jesus Green (2 people for £25) Our guide/chauffeur, Pip, provided lots of information and we enjoyed finding out about the colleges we passed and the chance to take lots of photos. Would definitely recommend!

Punting on the bonks.

Although we were rainned upon it was still an enjoyable trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and was happy to answer any of our questions.

Had a great time. The boat ride was very relaxing and the tour guide had great knowledge of the area and provided an insightful commentary on the history of the place

Seeing the colleges from the river was a great experience! The punting guide was excellent and I especially enjoyed the floating bar.

Best way to see Cambridge

It is truly the best way to see Cambridge University. Our guide Jules navigated river Cam like a pro, he is on top of his game. Jules is knowledgeable, professional and very nice. He had so many stories and tips, I have enjoyed the trip immensely.

A Fun and Informative Must Do

Great tour as promised with excellent and informative commentary from our guide Jules. Historical information delivered with a fun twist made the whole experience light hearted and fun. Amazing way to get a snippet of Cambridge life, can only recommend this trip as a must do.

Oh What a Punt?!

My friend and I booked onto a 6pm punting tour. We booked it earlier on in the day online. It was really simple and the pontoon was easy to find. We caught the late afternoon sun and it was just beautiful. Our pilot was Jules and he did a splendid job telling us all about the history of Cambridge University. Great sense of humour but really informative. We asked lots of questions and he answered them all. It must be hard work but Jules made it look effortless. Thanks for a lovely tour Jules!

Beautiful views, relaxing and informative experience

It was a vey relaxing way to admire the beautiful views and learn more about this amazing place. We have especially enjoyed going under the Mathematical bridge.

impressive boat tour with Rutherford punting guide

We had a wonderful time on the boat tour with our awesome tour guide John. He is pleasant, knowledgeable and humorous. He told us a lot of interesting stories about the bridges, the buildings, and the colleges of University of Cambridge along River Cam. The boat was clean and comfortable. The company has the reasonable price. We highly recommend them.

Great punt experience in Cambridge

Great experience on a beautiful day in Cambridge. Zach was a great navigator and guide. The entry location is near Jesus Lane and close to a park area. Lots of restaurants nearby. Very comfortable and safe experience.

Definitely worth a punt!

What a great way to experience Cambridge. Our punt pilot Jules was very friendly and made the trip very enjoyable with his in depth knowledge of all the universities and their history. Watching others trying to pilot the punts themselves, reassured us that we had made the right choice by taking a guided tour.

Great experience

Definitely worth it! Best way to see Cambridge and you can get some great pictures from the river. I will say, if you’re not sure about the time, there are plenty of options for punting when you arrive so if you’re not sure what time of day you’d want to do it, you’re probably okay to walk up to any of the punting shops the day or hour of and get an equal deal.

An Incredible Experience!

Punting in Cambridge is breathtaking & Rutherford’s is top notch! Blankets on board kept us warm on a very cold morning. Our handsome & friendly tour guide gave us a fantastic history of the colleges and bridges we passed, as well as helpful tips for the remainder of our stay.

Punting in Cambridge- must do!

Great way to see the universitues, colleges & the sights via the river! Thank you for the fun tour - while it wasn’t sunny we were comfortable in the punt & had an extra blanket - bonus - less busy than during the sunnier months - I’ll be back

Fantastic tour. Better than we had expected.

This tour was a fantastic addition to our university tour. The view to the Volleges and university from the Garden/court side was amaizing. Very impressiv. The young man, our guide was very polite and had answeared our every question. Has a lot of knoledge. The tour surpassed our expectations.

Excellent and interesting gondola ride with Rutherford’s Punting Company!!

We had a fantastic time on the gondola boat guided by our guide Toby from Rutherford’s Punting Company. He knew a lot to tell about the sights, about the local history, and was a very funny guy. He made the gondola ride interesting and enjoyable. Very sympathetic guy with a sense of humor.

Fun + good value for money

We had a great time! Our punter/guide was both entertaining and informative, and the prices are much better value than many of the other punting companies in Cambridge.

Mother's Day Punt 2024.

Really enjoyed our punting tour, apart from the rain! The tour guide was very informative and it lasted about 40 minutes up the river and then back down! Shared the boat with another family but we sat on the other side so it was more private than I thought.

Outstanding

Instead if shared punt, i was given a private boat with Andy, the punter/guide. The weather was lovely and Andy was great company. He explained all the history of Cambridge university. And as I was alone in the boat, he gave me full attention and answered all my queries

My first time punting experience was surreal. My guide cum punter (unfortunately I don't remember his name) was an amazing chap and narrated a few interesting stories. It is a must do activity if you are in Cambridge.

Brilliant!

What a great tour! Our guide, Josh, was brilliant, very knowledgeable and informative. He engaged with the passengers and made the trip very enjoyable. 45mins was perfect and we saw so much from the water on the tour. Comfortable seats with blankets. Highly recommend!

Last moment cancellation by company

Was forced to cancel the trip just one hour prior by the company itself! So had to cancel and still waiting for the refund!

Totally brilliant!

Absolutely fantastic punting trip! Dan made it super fun & interesting, pointing out all the sights and historic details. It was really peaceful & beautiful floating along the Cam enlivened by witnessing a trainee fall in. Dan rushed to his aid & rescued his pole. Highly recommend and will definitely do this trip again next time we come to Cambridge.

Compared to other companies, Rutherfords has a much more affordable price. The guide Dan is very nice, he told us a lot about the colleges and stories along the river Cam. Totally a nice trip.

A very cold but clear day, a warm bum and a cozy blanket. John, punting while giving a brilliant commentary with humour. Stunning architecture and Canada geese. What a great way to see a bit of Cambridge, even in winter.

Great views and a very interesting presentation from our host on the boat. We got lucky with the weather and that made it even better.

A very pleasant alternative way to see a part of Cambridge you might otherwise miss.

Booking was straightforward and everything seemed well enough organised when we got there. More importantly, however, the person taking us - Yancen - was very capable not only as a tour guide but also as a punt handler. This bexame particularly apparent whe having to negotiate round quite a number of novice punters on the river all whilst keeping track of what she was telling us and what we were passing by. Very well managed.

Nice tour

Took the fam from the USA on this punting tour. Very lovely experience for them and our chauffeur was very polite, friendly, and knowledgable. I was kindly refunded for the 2 absent members of our party which was unexpected so thank you very much.
