Nice Visit

It’s a neat place and great history. Well cared for. We unexpectedly had extra time in the area and got to stop by. We didn’t get to take the tour because it was sold out for the day. If you can plan ahead, definitely do it.

Teddy Roosevelt Inauguration House from some Missouri tourists

After looking around the Exposition Hall, our guide took us through the rest of the house. It was a fascinating, historical tour that brought real significance to the McKinnley assassination and Teddy Roosevelt inauguration. We recommend this stop to anyone who visits Buffalo.

What an absolutely wonderful National Park Site!

What an absolutely wonderful National Park Site! There is so much information in just one house. One can learn about the Buffalo World's Fair, the death of President McKinley, the inauguration of Theodore Roosevelt to replace McKinley and TR's career as president. There is also some interesting interactive stations in the house. Our guide was really helpful; she gave a great explanation of everything.

Worth the stop

I had heard stories in the past about the inauguration of TR, but it was great to get the facts. Our tour guide gave us lots of good information, and it was clear he loves Buffalo, the TR inauguration site, and sharing the stories.

Walk Through History

The guided tour is brief and informative. There are two compelling videos. Then, you are free to tour the museum and grounds on your own. We learned a lot and left with a renewed interest and respect for TR.

Outstanding

Outstanding guide who was so knowledgeable and accommodating. Never knew about this until checking Things to do in Buffalo on Trip Advisor. Great restoration of the facility, outstanding exhibits and learned things about Teddy none of us ever knew. Really enjoyed this historical treat.

A nice tour but could be better

I enjoyed the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural tour. It was a combination of recreated and original news clips and shorts, a very nice Pan Am Expo 1901 exhibit and interactive activities. The docent was very knowledgeable. I would have liked the docent to play a more important role in the entire experience. This is not a criticism of the docent but more of the way the tour is put together. The entire tour took about an hour. It was definitely worth the cost of the ticket. But it can be improved on by giving the docent a larger part in explaining the history of the times, in addition to reading about it.

Anniversary trip

The tour was conducted by the National Park Staff. There are NOT a lot to visitors to this site. You can walk up and get the tour. If you are a Senior and have the National Park pass the admission is free. You do not need to purchase this in advance. The home is nice and the Park Service has done a good job of telling the story.

Great tour, Bully!!

To preface this review: TR is my second favorite American President. We had a rainy day on our lake vacation, and my wife suggested a trip to Buffalo. I wasn’t sure what she had planned for us, but I was shocked it was the Theodore Roosevelt Inauguration Site. A beautiful building and a very professional, warm staff greets you. The gift shop and a few exhibits are on the first floor, followed by a guided tour of the actual house where Teddy became the 26th President. The house is wonderfully restored, though not original (they explain as to why on the tour), it allows you to step back to the turn of the 20th century for the unceremonious Inauguration of the first Progressive Era President. Bully!

I love a guided tour

You can only see this place by joining a guided tour, but it is well worth it. I learned a lot of interesting things about Theodore Roosevelt. the era, and the history of Buffalo. If you have time, after the tour, wander around some of the streets nearby, to see a variety of architecture. The homes are lovely. Allen street is a good place for a bite to eat.

A part of US history

I was shocked to learn during the tour that people were going to tear down this beautiful house that is part of US history. We should all be grateful people saved it for us to enjoy. There were many interactive displays, which made it engaging for the children in our group and adults alike. It is well worth 1-2 hours of your time when you are in Buffalo. The gift shop was nice with both presidential items and Buffalo items.

Nice Informative Tour

We decided not to make a reservation (during the week on a Thursday), and just take our chances. We walked in just as a tour was starting-and it was us and another couple. This building commemorates a single day in history when President McKinley was assassinated, and Teddy became president. Interesting tour-and we enjoyed the top floor on our own. Senior admission was $9. each.

Worth the time to visit just for the history...

Full disclosure, I am a huge National Park fan, so while we were waiting to visit the Martin House, we went to visit this spot. It's not exactly like other sites, it's more about the story of how it came to be the site of Roosevelts inauguration. Worth the side trip if you are in Buffalo.

Great interactive exhibit for all ages!

Great way to spend a few hours learning about Teddy Roosevelt. The historic site is well maintained with lots of interactive displays. We especially liked the second short picture film and the presidential office desk where you could see how your views and votes are vs Teddy’s. The desk is a great photo op and we really enjoyed the exhibit. This is a great exhibit for all ages. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Our tickets were for 3:30 however we were finished with our prior event at 2:30. They allowed us to do the 2:30 tour which was so nice. The site also has a paved parking lot so you do not have to fight for your life for street parking.

Teddy's inaugural in Buffalo , NY

This was a definite must see for anyone who has even a passing interest in Teddy . The museum was actually a home where he was inaugurated after Taft had suddenly died in Town . lots of period foto's and facts and items on display and very fascinating . the guided tour was extremely good and made the trip much more worthwhile . the volunteers who take u on the tour were all very well educated and more importantly enthusiastic . takes a few hours to complete . quite a refreshing bit of history . Note: this is not a museum about Theodore Roosevelt . it's about that day in history in buffalo . and in American history . extremely well done . I cant remember the name of my guide but a true local . knew everything and answered all my questions and more !!

Way More Fun than Expected

We had a couple of hours to kill on a rainy afternoon in Buffalo. Why not finally check this place out. Our initial annoyance after having fed numerous quarters into a parking meter only to discover the site had a large, free lot in the back was immediately lifted when we learned that our senior National Parks card allowed us free admission. Our knowledgeable guide first took us into a room with both audios and visuals that sort of catapulted us back in time to give us a sense of Gilded Age America for both the haves and have nots. (The audio with simulated screams at the assassination attempt of McKinley touched a really touched a nerve after having witnessed last summer's attack on Salman Rushdie at nearby Chautauqua.) From there we were treated to a tour of select rooms in this gorgeous 19th century mansion that the inauguration took place in. Our guide told us that we were free to take pictures but unfortunately rushed us through before we could do so. We did have an opportunity for a little independent play time on some of the interactive exhibits. I especially enjoyed having my picture taken as I posed as president. Despite some very minor gripes, I am glad we went.

A piece of American and Buffalonian history!

Small but interesting museum. The interactive displays are informative and the house where the inauguration was held after President McKinley’s assignation in 1901. The mansion is beautiful. It is a good lesson in the democratic views of Roosevelt’s that would - should - echo today.

Worth going, but more depth needed

I’m glad we went, but I would have liked more depth about Theodore Roosevelt’s career prior to becoming president and how he ended up being vice-president. The information seemed superficial and didn’t add much to my knowledge of Theodore Roosevelt. I would have like to have known why McKinley was assasinated It was very much a snapshot in time with little detail on either side.

The docent information, video productions and interactive activities in this beautiful, meticulously maintained home brought the inauguration to life.

Highly recommend!

This is one of our favorite museums! Family of 4 definitely worth the money. Even our teenagers liked it since there wasn't as much reading, more interactive. Highly recommend this museum if you're in the area or even a nice drive from the falls.

Beautiful Old House with Great History

We learned a lot about Teddy through the tour and various wall displays throughout the house. We love old houses and the history behind them. So to tour an old house that has ties with a President was wonderful. I think we spent about an hour or so here. There is a small parking lot behind the house. There is an ally way on the right side of the house. You actually look like you are going to an ATM, but right passed the ATM is the parking lot. You can enter through the back of the house. They have a great interactive item at the end of the tour and then you are allowed to stay and read all the displays at your own leisure. Glad we came!

Fun

This was such a fun quick experience! We learned so much and the house and furniture was gorgeous. I think it would be a lot of fun with younger kids because there is an interactive feature at the end of the tour. Plus the staff were so nice. Really enjoyed ourselves.

A Different Perspective

Loved it! Teddy is one of my favorite presidents. The tour guide was very informed and the house is beautiful and full of information. It was nice seeing this placed alongside what was going on in Buffalo at the time.

I loved the tour given. Such creativity, took us back in time. My partner and I definitely enjoyed it. Would definitely come back with friends.

The house where Theodore Roosevelt was sworn into office

Theodore Roosevelt was sworn into office at this nice house seated in downtown Buffalo. I didn't plan this visit and just missed a tour. After talking with the great staff, They let me do a preview of the house seeing the displays in the entrance and the main rooms on first floor which was interesting. I saw the room he got inaugurated in and Ansley Wilcox's desk where Roosevelt wrote his first official proclamation as President of the United States. I would call ahead if you want the full experience since the guided tour is about an hour long and leaves at certain intervals. I got a pass from my library for National Parks in NYS and this site is considered one of them. The place has a nice gift shop too. A must for history buffs, esp those that love politics.

History comes to life

We had an awesome time. The site has done a great job of setting the scene for the the historical moment that was Roosevelt’s inauguration. The visitor center explains the World’s Fair along with the social, political, and economic forces in play at the time. The house where Roosevelt was inaugurated was interesting to see as well. What put our experience over the top, though, was the guide. He was amazing. He truly brought the history to life and engaged all of us, including my youngest kids.

Not his home but learn about the day of his swearing in and issues faced

America the Beautiful pass accepted here. The international fair called Pan-American was being held in Buffalo, NY. President McKinley was shot by an assassin while on the grounds. Vice-President Roosevelt was summoned to Buffalo and stayed at his friend, Buffalo attorney Ansley Wilcox home. Following President McKinley's death, Theodore Roosevelt took the oath of office in the Wilcox home. You not only see the library where he was sworn in but also the desk used by Theodore Roosevelt after he was inaugurated. Start by watching the short film about Theodore Roosevelt in the visitor's center. The interactive exhibits are informative. The “Issues Theatre” offers several photographs and artifacts to help visualize the time period and issues that arose duringTheodore Roosevelt's term. Thoroughly enjoyed as a descendant of Theordore Roosevelt.

History Happened Here

A brilliant site of American history. It is an extraordinary building which is well preserved with original items. It’s hard to comprehend how important the events of Roosevelt were during this national crisis. To stand in the very room where Roosevelt became President is both humbling and amazing. There is some free parking on site as time has moved on the city has grown around this house so don’t be thrown off by the new business neighbors There is a nice film which helps set the stage for your visit Go enjoy

Informative and Enjoyable

The very informative short movies were my favorite part of the experience. The guide was very personable and informative as well. Overall this is a very educational and informative tour. It is definitely worth the cost of admission.
