Memento Park with Trabant Transfer

Excellent tour in a piece of motoring history

We were picked up from our hotel by Judit in her Trabant and taken to Memento Park where she gave an excellent, informative and thought provoking tour. Whilst the statues themselves were interesting to look at the tour added so much to the experience and Judit was very knowledgeable. Travelling by Trabant was a super fun way of getting to and from the park and Judit was able to give us interesting anecdotes and trivia about places we drove past. Definitely recommend it.

Fantastic experience and a must see

This is an absolute must-see in Budapest. Judit, our wonderful guide, picked us up at our flat in Gina, a Trabant. What a wonderful ride. We had people taking pictures of us in Gina as we rode back to our flat. When I was at university in the mid-1980’s, I studied the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries. I always dreamed of being able to visit. Judit was a wealth of knowledge and spoke in detail about Hungary under communism. She also spoke to the use of imagery in the socialist realist style and how it was designed to affect people. If you enjoy history, art or just want to better understand Hungary under communism, this tour is a must.

Fabulous Fun!

Travelling to Mememto Park in a Trabant was so fun! We were picked up/dropped off at our flat and thoroughly enjoyed the ride. These little East German cars are historic, iconic, and surprisingly comfy. Our wonderful guide, Judit, knew a lot about the car and all the little details are fascinating. Judit made history come alive as she explained the significance and original purpose of the huge statues in Mememto Park. She is a skilled storyteller that helped us understand the significant historical period Memento Park represents. The Mememto Park Guided Tour with Tranbant Tour was incredible value and a highlight of our time in Budapest. Highly recommend!

An amazing experience & insight into Hungary's Cold War history

This was an amazing experience - it was something we had been looking forward to excitedly & didn't disappoint.. Judit, our lovely & very knowledgable guide picked us up in a Trabant from our hotel in central Pest. We then enjoyed a 15km to Memento Park in this historic vehicle. Judit then gave us a personal guided tour, imparting a huge amount of information on the creation of the park as well as the statues & sculptures in the park. Her insight on some of the political tensions that lay behind the creation of the park were especially thought provoking. After a couple of hours, including some time to explore the park ourselves, we enjoyed another chauffeured drive back to Budapest. This is an experience not to be missed. It was nice to feel that our visit also contributed in a small way to the maintenance of this park, which receives no state funding.

Trabant tour of Memento Park

We had a wonderful time on the Memento Park tour with our awesome guide Judit. She picked us up at our hotel in her awesome 1974 Trabant and drove us to the park. The Trabant is a small car that was made in former East Germany. What an ironic way to travel to a park dedicated to monumental statues and plaques from Hungary’s Communist period. I am so glad we took this tour with Judit, instead of going to the park on our own. Judit is very knowledgeable regarding, the history behind the founding of the park, the Hungary’s Communist history and all the statues and plaques within the park. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour with Judit. You will not be disappointed!

THE BEST guided tour we’ve ever taken!

In a trip packed with great sights and experiences, this tour of Memento Park with Judit in her very own East German-built Trabant was the absolute tops! The park itself is an extraordinary and fascinating place, showcasing the decades of harsh Communist rule in Hungary with monumental outdoor statuary taken down from all over the country after the collapse of communism. But the icing as well as the frosting on the cake is seeing it with Judit in her Trabant. Spending the day with Judit was super fun and interesting. She helps manage the park and knows the history and inside story about both the park and the communist era it so movingly portrays. And getting there in a vintage Trabant is like being in a Time Machine! Hell, if you know how to drive a stick shift, she may even let you drive it like I did (off highway, of course!)! Touring Memento Park with Judit in her Trabant will continue to be the first thing I talk about when friends ask me how our trip was - trust me, it’s that special!

Bright experience on a gloomy day

Judit, our driver and tour guide, was incredible! The Trabant pickup was amazing and easy, and Judit was a very friendly and knowledgeable guide. Her English was fluent and she had no trouble conversing and explaining, and was very enthusiastic in our conversation about our travels. She provided full explanations and supplemental materials when going through the park, giving us the history and story behind why the statues were important and why it was critical for history to never forget them. The Trabant itself was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, although as a very tall person, it wasn't super comfortable (but that was sort of the intended point of picking this tour). People larger in stature of any sort may struggle a bit getting in and out of the tiny vehicle. It's a beautiful car, though, and they've clearly shown a lot of care in maintaining it.

A Great Day at Memento Park,

This experience was a highlight of our trip. Our guide Henri was knowledgeable about the history of the statues and was able to provide great background on Hungary's political, socialital history. Pick up was right in time. We loved traveling in the Trabant! Highly recommend this tour iand ask for Henri. He made the experience unforgettable!!!

Awesome Experience!

Judith is outstanding! She was passionate, extremely knowledgeable, and refreshing! Gina, the Trabant, was a hoot! Wish more people would take this tour! Judith is the biggest asset - she presented the subject from different points of view for you to consider. A must do!

To be able to ride in...

To be able to ride in such an emblematic vehicle today - was a remarkable thing. We loved the whole experience - the sound, the smell and the pace through Budapest to waves from pedestrians who love the sight of a Trabant – and we loved the feeling of going to Memento Park in a vehicle that represented so much of the rigors and demands of that era. The whole experience was very moving and very real in its sensations. Our guide – Judit - was superb. We could not have wished for anyone better. She knew exactly how to describe the time and the feelings and the momentum that led to the removal of the statues from public life - and to their erection in a park so thoughtfully dedicated to the memory of those whose lives were lost.

Most excellent! Loved the Trabbie ride with Judite! What fun! Memento Park was so very moving, we shall remember this day always and think of our unknown family members that suffered under communism. Thank you for sharing this extraordinary memorial.

Great guided tour

Worth the trip out of Budapest (we used public transport and it was fine) but recommend the guided tour. Our guide was so informative, friendly and passionate about the monuments and history, she brought it all to life and made us really reflect on communism and the use of propaganda.

Unique and interesting experience

We had such a great time with Judit! She picked us up from our hotel in her Trabant, drove us to Memento Park, gave us a tour of the place and drove us back to the city center. A guided tour of Memento Park is a must - Judit shared so much knowledge about history, politics, and art. She was witty and moving. It was a unique experience, the highlight of our visit to Budapest. Highly recommended!

Worth a visit!

We had a wonderful tour with Judit. She picked us up at our hotel, drove us in her lovely Trabant to Memento Park, gave us a tour of the Park, and then took us to an old school restaurant called Bambi. She was timely, fun, and extremely informative. Memento Park is absolutely worth visiting and was a highlight of out time in Budapest. It is privately run and needs all the support it can get.

Amazing tour of Memento Park combined with Trabant tour

The ABSOLUTE BEST thing you can do when visiting Budapest! By far and away the most interesting activity that we did during our five-day visit. The best way to explore Memento Park is to combine it with a Trabant transfer AND a tour with Judit Holp. We loved the trip back in time in the 1979 Trabant with Judit as our guide. The ride to the park was great as we chatted about the history of the park and Hungary. Once we arrived at the park, Judit gave us a 90=minute tour that was incredible and moving. I cannot imagine trying to see the park without a tour guide. Judit combined the tour with humor and wit and emotion. Extremely moving. I worked for Levi Strauss in the 90's and we ran a series of TV ads where a person traded a pair of jeans for "stuff" in Eastern Europe. Judit played along and did the swap with my husband (see pics attached). Please support Judit and the park to keep it going for future visits! It is run by a private organization as the City and State were not able to make it work on their own. It needs your support!

Highlight of our Budapest Visit!

Judit, our Trabant driver and tour guide, was fantastic! From the moment Judit picked us up (early) at the front of our hotel to the moment she dropped us back off we enjoyed engaging and thought-provoking conversations about history, politics, and art. We were delighted to see how very personalized our experience felt, as we received an enlightening private guided tour of the entire Memento Park outdoor museum, with a bit of free time at the end to walk about and explore on our own and to take all the fun selfies one is inclined to take when surrounded by massive Soviet-era statues. The time on this excursion flew by and we only wished we'd had even longer to enjoy the park. We spent a total of four days in Budapest, experiencing many of the city's celebrated highlights and engaging with numerous guides. But this tour and Judit (with her Trabant, "Gina") were our favorites. Take this tour early upon your arrival to the city for a foundational experience that will enrich all other facets of your visit to Budapest. Highly recommended!
