So far our favorite part of being in Athens

Our guide, Cici, (might be the wrong spelling) was great. Super knowledgeable. Also we were stuck in traffic getting to our meeting place and then got turned around but the guides found us.

Detailed and informative tour!

I highly recommend this walking city tour for people who like to learn about the history of a new city. It is a very long tour, especially when it is hot in Athens, but it is well worth the info that you learn from your guide! Our guide Giannis, an archaeologist, was a fountain of knowledge, and tried to pace the tour to accommodate each member's needs. We were also provided with ear pieces that made it easy to hear our guide throughout the tour. If you like learning, this tour is definitely for you!

Walking Tour of Athens

We had a wonderful experience with Athens Walking Tours. We saw and learned so very much from our tour guide Rina. She was a wealth of knowledge about the city, the Acropolis, the history of Greece and the artifacts in the museam. Far better experience than if we had walked on our own. Highly recommend if you are visitng athens.

Hard to find meeting point

Overall, this walking tour was very good. However, finding the meeting spot is VERY confusing. Instead of meeting downstairs in the Metro, the organizers should make the meeting point a more obvious place, such as the water fountain. The problem is that this tour is taken by people not familiar with the city. Only if you ask or call can you easily find the meeting point. The second criticism is that the guide should spend a little less time taking in detail about every historical monument. I feel they are told to do that to stretch the time to about 5 hours. Certainly, we want the have an overview, but I would rather have just finished earlier than heard so many details. It is hot on the way up to the Acropolis. Taking a lot of breaks is good, but sitting for what seems like 15 mins at each stop to hear excruciating details makes it less comfortable. However, all said, still a good experience.

Book it!

I did the walking tour with Hermes, and so glad I did. I am generally against “tourist“ guided trips, but my gut said not this time. Was so knowledgeable, I feel like I got a crash course in Greek history. He was also very nice and remarkably funny. This will be a highlight of the trip.

Well-paced tour

Well paced and informative tour. Our guide knew when to slow down and when to speed up in order to give us the most positive experience!

Enjoyed seeing the sites of the city and then of course the acropolis Margaret was very knowledgeable and considerate of all her guest.

The Ideal Walking Tour to cover Athens in one day. Worth the efforts and cost taken.

Our guide Tina was excellent in explaining the whole journey of the tour right from the change of guards to city tour and she was crisp with the facts and very prompt to answering all our questions. She was very keen and explained everything with so much interest. The Acropolis and Parthenon was the highlight of the tour. I would highly recommend this walking tour, while just reminding that there is a lot of walking that is required on the tour. Thank you Athens Walking Tour for the experience.

So fun!

This was such a fun way to learn about Athens. I wasn't really sure what I was signing up for, so I am going to try and list some things that would be helpful to know after the review. Our tour guide Margarete was so informative and had great information and little side stories about the sites. It was a LONG tour (but we chose that) and a lot of walking, but there is literally no other way to access these sites. Also, the tour ends during the hottest part of the day at the Acropolis museum, which is indoor and air-conditioned. It was honestly really nice to walk around Athens this way. I highly, highly recommend this tour. Some things to note: -The cost of this tour is just for the guide and the tour itself. You will need to buy tickets to access the sites yourself, but they will sell them to you. Just be ready with cash. I think it was about $70 total -The meeting point is at a parkway of some sort, but the actual meeting place was inside the metro station at that parkway. We almost missed our tour because we didn't know or catch that. So, if you can't find a group, walk down into the Metro station and look for people -The tour includes "skip the line" passes at places like the Acropolis and the museum, but almost everyone will have those, so be prepared to still wait in line. -If you are going in the summer, it is HOT. Bring water. If you have space in your luggage, bring an insulated bottle to help keep it cold. -The Acropolis will probably be busy when you go, so if you want it not busy, you would have to go back on your own and buy a new ticket, aim for sunrise for no crowds -I know some travel bloggers recommend doing Athens at the end of your trip so you have wiggle room to account for ferry cancellations, etc. I would say do not to that for an all-day walking tour. I would have been absolutely beat and not made it the whole day, but like I said we booked the longest tour. There are shorter ones.

Excellent Guide and Walking Tour

We took the Athens Walking Tours 5 hour city tour with Margarite as our Guide. She was such a great Guide - we really enjoyed our time with her. This tour is perfect for an overview of the city. Good value, well-coordinated and executed. I highly recommend this company and Margarite!

Athens walking tour

We took the walking tour of The Acropolis and the new museum. Our guide was Olesya. She was so fun and so knowledgeable about Greek history and culture. I wish we could take her with us on our cruise as our guide for all our excursions. She was amazing.

Phenomenal Ancient Masterpieces

Being able to see such phenomenal ancient structures was a great achievement. It is hard to believe how these wonders were thoughtfully designed and constructed. Our guide was amazing in explaining all of this to us in a very interesting presentation. The day was perfect as it was warm but not unbearable and our guide made sure to find shady spots to stand.

Best tour ever

One of the best tours ever! Our guide was top notch! He was very informative and knew how to talk to a crowd. I learned a lot and am so glad that my visit to Athens included this tour. A highlight of my visit!

Hermes (sp?) did a great job.

Our guide, Hermes, was very knowledgeable about everything we saw and he discussed things in an entertaining way. We didn’t think the walking was too strenuous or excessive, but wear good walking shoes and cool clothing. It gets hot up on the hill. Major thanks to Hermes for our restaurant recommendation in the Plaka area. It was the dining highlight of our entire trip.

A must do in Athens

We went on the 6 hour Acropolis/Museum tour. Our tour guide Ermis was very knowledgeable and passionate about everything we saw. Don’t be intimidated by the height. He stopped several times to tell us about the sites on the way up. The tour is the to go instead of wandering around wondering what you are look at. October is a great time to go.

Fantastic Guided Tour of Important Historical Sites!

We were privileged to have Apollon host us for the day. He is an excellent guide, with deep knowledge of Greek history and that of the ancient sites and their artifacts. We learned a great deal more than would have been possible had we attempted to guide ourselves on this tour. Thank you!

This tour exceeded our expectations. Our tour guide Annie/Ann was just amazing. Her vast knowledge of Greek history and archeology made everything we experienced so much more context. Amazing!!

Walking tour of Athens and pickup point comments

Guide Giota from walking tours was great. Unfortunately we nearly missed the tour because of the poor information on the meeting place. It said Synatagma square but it was really on the first basement floor of the nearby subway. A helpful guide told me this might be where it was otherwise we would have missed it. You need to improve your explanations for meeting points. We had the same problem the next day when we asked for a hotel pickup. It said 0830 hrs leaving. The pickup driver came at 0730 hrs. He told us the real leaving point was the A media hotel a short 10 minute walk away. Again, the tour meeting point should say ‘make your way to the Amelia hotel for the leaving time or get a hotel pickup. Also, on your website I could not read the hotel meeting drop down list as the top half of all sites was missing. PS: we will book directly with walking tours in the future.

Great Tour

Oh my this was a Great way to see the Acropolis. Lots and lots of walking and step climbing but there aren't any escalators or elevators. You have to see the Acropolis when in Athens or Greece! It's a Must do! Our guide was excellent. She knew her stuff and was very passionate about the subject. We also got head of the line privilege. This in itself was worth it. The Museum was fantastic. Our guide was superb here too. The whole experience couldn't have been better.

Highly recommend you skip this tour.

Horrible tour. Don't waste your money. If we could give less than 1 star, we would. We had an add on to this tour- a "luxury pickup at the cruise port to the Syntagma Metro Station to meet the Athens Walking Tour Guide". The "luxury pickup" was a regular taxi which we had to wait 30 min to get in as another couple were supposed to join and were no- shows. Upon arrival at the metro station, we waited with a large group of other tourists while the guides sorted the large group into smaller groups,of approx 15 people, handing us head sets and the "Skip the Line" tickets for the Acropolis and the Museum. This process took about an hour so you will spend your first hour in a train station, at the bottom of an escalator. The tour started with a walk around the metro station looking at some rather boring decorative artifacts in the station. Not interesting/worth your time. We then headed off to view the Changing of the Guards. Most interesting part of this tour. Note that this can be seen on your own, no guide needed. Next, we begin our walk thru/tour the "National Garden". Disappointing. Typical pass thru urban park that clearly has not been taken care of. Dead plants/a pond with a few turtles. Absolutely nothing of interest. Once thru the park, a couple other historical sites under construction/behind fences are pointed out along the way. A drive thru the city in a taxi to the Acropolis would have been far more efficient and we would have seen the same things. We arrive at the yogurt store and end up staying there, on the sidewalk, for over an hour as the guides have to wait for yet more tourists to join us there and, during this process, discover that our "Skip the Line tickets" now must all be replaced as we missed the time on our tickets to enter the Acropolis. Someone from the company was called and he had to run up the street to the Acropolis to get us all new tickets so...we wait.. on the sidewalk. We finally arrive at the Acropolis around noon (3.5 hrs after we begin this "tour" seeing nothing yet of any interest). Once there, the guides tell us that the "skip the line process" was changed the day before. Our guides are confused. They tell us to just cut in front of others tourists/jump over the ropes in the very long ticket line. As you can imagine, other tourists in line are not happy with this/us. So embarrassing. Once thru the entry, the tour at both the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum was just ok. It was difficult at times to hear the guide in our headset and the group continually reminded her to keep the mike near her mouth as it kept bouncing around. At the end of the tour, the guide just left us at the Museum. She had no idea about our "add on" and couldn't provide us with any directions to our "luxury ride pickup" meeting point. It took us about an hour to figure this out but, thankfully, we made it back to the cruise port on time, in yet another taxi. We now believe that the "add on" isn't actually affiliated with the Walking Tour. It likely is just someone else who waits for you at the port and puts you into a taxi to the station. Overall, this $200+ tour was absolutely the most disorganized tour we have ever taken and it was not as advertised. Save your money. Buy your Skip the Line tickets online. Hire a guide online who can meet you onsite at the Acropolis and provide a tour of the Acropolis. Get a taxi at the port (there are plenty waiting) to the Acropolis to meet your guide. Walk to the Museum. Get a taxi back to the port. You'll save money and have more time actually seeing something worthwhile.

Best tour ever with Apollon

Apollon was so incredible! He spent 6 hours without ever being boring! He told stories, explained historical events, architectural & art details of everything we saw. He paced the tour nicely, spoke clearly, added humor. Best tour we’ve ever been on and trust me we travel frequently and have attended tours in many countries

Great overall experience - worth it

Totally worth it. Guide was very patient and engaging. All places were totally worth the visit. It’s a walking tour and check the weather and if it’s hot - probably a good idea to get a tour that has ride from place to place.

Spectacular!

We had the most amazing tour guide- I cannot remember her name! She had a PHD in archeology and made everything come alive. She was also funny and a great wealth of information.

Acropolis Walking Tour is a Must

Our tour guide, Kate, was very knowledgeable and showed enthusiasm throughout a lengthy tour keeping our attention. The day began with rain and it was nice that we were offered ponchos without asking. One suggestion to anyone requiring transportation to the starting point, allow more time than you might think. We almost missed our start time despite allowing one hour from our hotel. Taxis/Ubers are difficult to come by. Excellent experience and we highly recommend this tour!

Time and money well spent

We completed the Athens City, Acropolis and Acropolis Museum 5 1/2 hour walking tour. We covered many of the main sights in Athens with our guide Hermes. He was very entertaining and a great storyteller, bringing everything to life, The 5 1/2 hours went really quickly and we got a lot more out of seeing the sights with the tour commentary than we would have doing it ourselves. If you’ve got limited time in Athens or it’s your first time in Athens this is a great way to get acquainted with the city. Highly recommended.

Great start to understand Athens and its history

Sissi is a knowledgeable and energetic professional guide with humor. She took care of our tour group carefully. It was the first day of my stay in Athens when I joined her group and Sissi impressed me with how deep Greek history is and made me feel thrilled to be there.

Highly recommend this tour , yes it is long but covers so much . Our guide Giota made this trip , her knowledge and personality shone . She tried to ensure we found shade when we stopped . I defiantly recommend going onto the museum with her , she highlighted many things there that we would not have seen if unaccompanied . All in all this tour is a must when in Athens and hopefully you will also have the lovely knowledgeable and fun Giota .

The Gods have Spoken

We are Greeks from Australia. But decided to do this walking Tour and Skip the line for acropolis and museum. Our guide named Maria. Was outstanding. The knowledge of History was exceptional and she was passionate about Athens and its monuments. We learned so much that we didn't Know. We had been to the Acropolis before. But this was fantastic. Maria brought to life the history of the area. We were out most of the day. But had alot of stops under shady trees to escape the sun.

The only way to get the most out of the Acropolis!

The walking tour that we did was led by a guide named Sissy. She was excellent. Very informative, funny, and kept us on a nice pace over the 5.5 hours of the tour. Yes, you could walk around the Acropolis on your own and save some money—no doubt. But if this is your one and only opportunity to enjoy this famous marvel of antiquity why not get the maximum knowledge and understanding out of the experience. This can only be accomplished with a good guide-especially one who knows all the shady spots!

Peak summer travel

Too slow - too big of a group . You get to the Parthenon at peak hours which made the experience less than desirable. The guide was lovely and knowledgeable though

A great tour.

This was a well paced tour of the Changing of the Guard, National Gardens, Acropolis and Museum. Tina, our guide, did an excellent job of explaining everything that we saw in a clear, knowledgeable and passionate way. The wireless headsets worked well, and we could hear her excellent commentary very clearly. This tour was a great way to see the sites and learn about them from such a knowledgeable guide - thank-you Tina!

We had a wonderful day with our guide and learned a lot about the history of Athens. We were very tired toward the end and did not stay too long at the museum. Pack water, snacks hats and sunscreen.

Fun and knowledge filled tour!

Alesia was a fantastic tour guide! She was knowledgeable and super friendly. It was a long and hot day but the built in break was perfect. We had a great time walking and learning. Make sure to pack water and sun screen, the Greek sun takes no prisoners. Wear comfy shoes with some grip. The way up to the Parthenon isn’t too steep but it has a lot of marble steps and they can get slippery.

Great tour for first visit to Athens.

Our guide was excellent, would definitely refer anyone I know to take this tour. The walk was easy for anyone reasonably fit and covers the main attraction in Athens.

Acropolis and Museum

A wonderful experience for history and culture! Guide was very knowledgeable! However this was too fast paced for 2 ladies in 70s. We climbed 20 stairways according to watch. At the Museum we left tour and did on our own because we needed water and rest. Many in the tour did same and were struggling. But it was mild temp. And overcast but everyone was hot and tired. I suggest TWO thirty minute breaks! We had tickets to the museum and did on our own..not with tour! DO NOT skip Museum. It is fabulous. Overall great tour but moves rapidly. I would do this tour again, but a bit slower. I would not suggest this tour during June, July or August...hot! No shade.
