Culinary delights in beautiful Athens

The Athens food tour was a real highlight of our time in Greece. It’s a great way to learn about the city, find your way around and learn about Greek culture - in the most delicious way. Elena our guide was very accommodating to the different preferences of different people and made a point of talking to everyone and getting to know everyone on the tour. She was also very fun to be around. I loved how the tour was at a good leisurely pace, you didn’t feel you were ticking the boxes and rushing to each food tasting stop off point. My favourite stops were the Greek coffee and the taverna - make sure you don’t have breakfast as there are so many amazing things to eat on this fantastic tour! Thank you Elena, you were amazing!

What a lovely culinary delight!!!! Elena was the perfect guide. She provided a delicious and informative tour for 4 couples from the US and UK. Have your coffee at the hotel beforehand and leave your tummy empty for what is to come. A sampling of the best of what Athens has to offer. All within easy walking distance between stops. A MUST do if you want to appreciate the finest of what Athens has to offer!

Amazing food

Great introduction to Athens!

We had an absolutely wonderful time on our food tour of Athens. We were a mixed group of two adults, a senior, and 4 older teenagers. All had fun. Our guide, Mary-Kate, was delightful. She was helpful and so knowledgeable. We were not only introduced to the foods of Greece, but learned about the history of Athens and Greece. The individual tastings were fascinating, from an expansive olive oil tasting, to a coffee experience, to a lunch of traditional home cooked Greek food in a restaurant inside the city’s central market. Go hungry and pace yourself - so much food! Be prepared to do some walking. We covered almost 3 miles. Plenty of stops to sit and rest while you taste, but you’ll be lugging some bags with the goodies you’ll inevitably purchase along the way. 😊

Nice way to sample foods but too long and unnecessary wait at certain stops and walking through the wet market Olive oil sampling stop was great. The coffee shop very slow and not good service. Guide was very nice and kept everyone together but needs to give more history about the food She did talk of areas and shop history s. Maybe a great guide and not a foodie sampling and explanation. Also trying different types

Good way to see other parts of Athens

The guide was very knowledgeable and took us to areas that we would not have seen otherwise visiting Athens. Would recommend the tour as a great way to explore Athens.

Outstanding!

This was outstanding! We enjoyed seeing various sections of the city, tasting the most amazing food, as well as learning about the history and culture. I would highly recommend this tour!! I cannot say enough about how knowledgeable and enjoyable our guide was, and the selections of foods were perfect. Yum!!!!

Wonderful tour, absolutely worth it!

Elena was a great tour guide and really easy to talk to and got everyone really comfortable with each other. Loved the food we got to eat, obviously, and the other places around town she pointed out that I think we probably wouldn't have seen! Also never felt rushed and had some great conversations with everyone. Most of the food was fine for a vegetarian, I wouldn't bother if you were vegan honestly, honey, cream, cheese, yogurt, etc. Pretty sure you'd only have the coffee and olive oil tasting. Only change made for me (vegetarian) was the souvlaki without meat, I'm totally fine with a fry sandwich! Really enjoyed trying all the food and knowing what to look for during the rest of my trip!

Great time and great food!

Really great tour! Our tour guide was Elena and she was wonderful, very fun to talk to and great putting everyone at ease with each other. She showed us a few random places in town we wouldn't have otherwise seen, in addition to the delicious food. Plenty of options for vegetarians, there was only one meal I had to change up (souvlaki just without the meat). It was a good amount of food to test out without stuffing yourself, but with the souvlaki as an actual meal. A very fun morning! Definitely recommend

Great small group tour, fantastic host

Haris took us to out of the way places and showed us great food. he was knowledgeable and very engaging. It was a fantastic morning in Athens and really added to our trip there. the group was small, juts four people, and we spend a great low key 3 hours, walking around the centre of Athens, visiting great places. Haris was an especially loevely guide.

Elena was very knowledgeable about the food (and there was a lot of it) and its place in Greek life. It was great to see three different areas of Athens and try the local delicacies. There was so much food to try, definitely don’t need breakfast or lunch! Elena also shared some tips and hints to enjoy Athens. You will finish this tour with a full belly!

Great start to our visit to Greece.

The tour was excellent, very informative, great relaxed atmosphere. The food was fantastic. We ate enough to last us all day. Our tour guide Elena was spectacular, very knowledgeable and understanding of our dietary requirements. I would highly recommend this tour.

Delicious way to experience Athens

This was a really fun tour to do with our teens. All the food samples were delicious and it was more food than we could eat, even with a small breakfast! Definitely come with an appetite. Exploring the neighbourhoods on foot and with Eleni’s insight was a lovely way to spend a few hours. We visited places we never would have found on our own and gained insights into typical Greek foods. Would definitely recommend.

Fun Greek food tour.

Elissavet was our guide on this engaging tour. She was so knowledgeable about the food and places we visited. She brought us to side streets and alley ways we would never have ventured on our own. We only regret we didn't do this tour first. Highly recommended.

Great experience with kids!

Elena guided us through an amazing tasting experience in Athens! We were a small group of 5 people and the experience was delicious and instructive for all of us. My kids (9 and 6) said it was the best part of their stay in Athens. Highly recommended!

Delicious and educational!

My husband and I loved this walking food tour! Our guide, Elana did an amazing job explaining and teaching us about all the different Greek foods and customs! We ate many delicious Greek foods, from their traditional coffee and sweets to full meals. Elana took us to the best restaurants and shops for the freshest and highest quality ingredients. We would highly recommend this tour!

Yummy and informative!!!

Andreas was our walking food tour guide and we loved him! He not only told us about local food (with 8 stops) but also about history as we moved throughout the city. He answered any questions we had with enthusiasm and gusto. I know it says to go hungry, but GO HUNGRY! A lot of the meals were full size! I ate so much, because it was so good! 100 % recommend to anyone who is interested!

nice experience

last Saturday, April 5 2024 me and my wife had the food tour with Alternative Athens. The guide was Eleni Kapiri and she was superb and lovely. her English is clear and understandable and she took us to nice places that the local people use to go. we tasted the food that the locals like. we recommend the tour and especially Eleni.

Exceeded expectations

This food tour exceeded our expectations. We learned so much about Greek food, history, and culture from our guide Andreas, and got to try so many delicious foods. Andreas took us to various neighborhoods, and we got to sample what the locals eat. We brought our teenage children, and they had a great time as well. Because of the frequent stops and snacks, it didn’t feel like too much walking. I couldn’t recommend this tour more highly!

Wonderfull food Tour

It was the best Food tour ive Experiencet so far. The food was always Great and Tasty, and you could see how they where Produced. It was just a little too much Food, but if you are in a bigger group it should be Perfect( i was with just one Family Member)

Amazing foodie tour!

This was an excellent introduction to culinary treasures of Athens. Our tour leader, Andreas was exceptional in that he was very knowledgeable about food and also about living in Athens. We had 9 separate stops during the tour each highlighting a food specific to Athens and/or Greece. The tour offered a wonderful variety of food from virgin olive oil and bread for dipping to Greek donuts and gyros. Each vendor was chosen with care. This tour was an absolute gem and highly recommended.

A wonderful introduction to the culinary delights of Athens

This is a wonderful introduction to the culinary and cultural delights of the City of Athens and Greece . The tour includes 9 stops at food establishments in the city showcasing a variety of culinary traditions including olive oil , breads, Greece coffee, donuts, pies, hero’s. etc. Andreas our group leader also provided information on living in Greece including the joys and struggles. He is an exceptional tour guide and one of the best tour guides of the many tours we have taken in Europe. We would highly recommend this foodie walking tour while in Athens.

An incredible tour…much more than food. Our wonderful guide, Andreas, provided in depth background of the development of each neighborhood, Athens and Greece. All gave us an understanding of not only the food but how it and the culture evolved.

Great tour, amazing guide.

Our guide for the food tour was Elizabeth (English version of her name). She was amazing. Very informative, very friendly and just great to be with. Our tour was small, which was also great. We did an informative walk through several neighborhoods, had Greek coffee and pastries, bread and olive oil and learned all about olive oil, a walk through the open meat market, lunch at an outdoor restaurant and ended with a pastry desert. Elizabeth made this tour very enjoyable with her knowledge and friendly disposition. She even gave us her number if we had questions about other tours or places to go in Greece. We highly recommend this tour. It is a great way to get to know the neighborhoods.

Elissavet was an excellent guide. She knew both historical information and a lot about food. She was sensitive to dietary concerns in our group and found something for everyone at each site. The tour starts out with small food amounts, but builds. You will have had plenty to eat by the end! Well done!

A great first activity in Athens.

Elissavet was a delightful and knowledgeable guide. We did this tour on our first day in Athens and it was a wonderful way to get acquainted with local food as well as culture and history. We sampled many delicious local delicacies…much more food than I expected. My favorite stops were the Greek coffee and the mastika flavored cookies (a new flavor for me). Highly recommend this tour!

Excellent overview of Greek food culture

We were lucky that a “small group “ tour was just the two of us but doubtlessly Elenie would have coped just as well with a full group; thanks for running it for two. Took us to a variety of authentic food outlets several of which we return during our week in Athens. This really opened our eyes to Greek food and to the business new and more established that are leading the way in rebuilding the Greek economy

Deliciously Greek

We had a wonderful morning with Elisabeth sampling delicious Greek food’s & learning interesting snippets of information about Athens & its history & modern Greek life. Elisabeth provided authentic Greek experiences we would not have found ourselves e.g., Greek coffee brewed in traditional manner, mastica flavoured almond macaron & more. There was plenty to eat & a good balance of sweet & savoury dishes. I would highly recommend. Elisabeth was a knowledgeable & delightful guide.

We booked this Alternative Athens Tour through Get Your Guide, but feel free to book directly. Elena picked a great meeting place and all 5 of us were on time. After the three-hour tour, each person tipped Elena ten euros. I add that because I always wonder… She offered so many tastes it definitely filled us for lunch…the best baklava, the best souvlaki, and so much more. She asks about dietary preferences and feel free to eat as little as you want. These were places I would have missed. There was no pressure to buy a thing. Plus she showed us the street where clergy buy their vestments and the giant market in Psyri. I highly recommend this walk and this guide!

Excellently hosted by the friendly and knowledgeable Andreas, we really enjoyed this food focused tour of Athens. It covered many neighbourhoods, so it was a great introduction to the city as well as being a great gastronomic experience. The tour had many stops and covered many different types of foods. Andreas was a great guide and was happy to answer any questions we had and to give advice on what to see and experience in Athens. We would highly recommend you do this tour. You will have lots to eat on this tour so have a light breakfast and enjoy !

We had a wonderful food tour with a knowledgeable host, Elissavet. She went out of her way to cater to our interests, and she had great facts about Athens and Greek culture and history. We learned a lot about Greek food and the city, and we really appreciated the follow up email with suggestions for the rest of our trip. It was very thoughtful. Well worth the time and cost! A must do if you are interested in Greek food

Elissavet was such a lovely guide. Not only was she very knowledgeable about the food and the processes behind it, but she was a caring person who seemed to have all of our interests at heart. As a solo traveler, she made me feel very welcomed. The food of course, was great too, and there was a good variety of different dishes. While most of the dishes started off small, by the last stop there was plenty to eat and I was completely full by the end of the tour.
