Mount Olympus And Dion Full-Day Tour From Athens By Train

Great tour itself but long train ride

Damien was great! We loved the tour of Mt Olympus and Dion. The lunch was very good but not great if you have allergies. Castle was not worth a stop and was definitely just a time filler while we waited for the train back to Athens. All of the history was so wonderful and seeing Mt Olympus was great but not sure if it was worth the 8 hour (4 hours each way) train ride. If we had time, I would have wanted to hike more of the Mt Olympus national park so would have done a 2 day stay in that area of Greece.

The Tour Guide, Damian, Made the Tour!!!!!

The tour guide, Damian was wonderful. Such a nice, intelligent young man. The group was very small, only 4 of us (a party of 3 and then me.) Damian's knowledge of the area and the history of the region was very excellent. The only drawback to the entire trip was the restroom area at the train station when we arrived. Although no fault of the tour guide or the tour company, the restrooms were horrid! No toilet seats on most of the toilets, and some stalls didn't even have doors on them so anyone walking by could see you. The restrooms looked like something in an abandoned building and were located in an area that could very easily have been a place where you could have been mugged or assaulted. MOST DEFINATELY use the restroom on the train before you get to the destination!!! But, aside from that one issue, the tour itself was great! We ate at a local restaurant and the food and atmosphere were great. You could tell by the way the tour guide was welcomed that he has a great relationship to people in the area, which speaks volumes to his character and personality. The tour guide made everyone feel like we were simply a friend of his that he was showing around his hometown!! Best tour guide of all the 9 tours I took while I was in Greece!

Great tour and amazing guide

Our tour guide was amazing and very knowledgeable. There was a lot to see at Dion archeological ruins. We spent the entire hour walking around and learned a lot about the history. The restaurant we went to for lunch was so good and next to the museum so we stopped there while they prepared our orders. The food was delicious and the owner was very friendly. Mt Olympus was amazing and the tour guide gave a lot of information as we walked. The walk was easy, there were a few steps in the beginning.

And enjoyable trip

Our guy Damien was very good. We got to see the ancient city of Dion, Mount Olympus, and a medieval castle. The train trip from Athens is long four hours and then four hours back, but it was worth it to get to see the sites

Worth Seeing

Damian was a great story teller, he told about several myths and about some of Greek history. Mount Olympus was amazing and we got to try fresh mountsin spring water from the source. Outside of the Dion museum, we stopwd at a family owned restaurant for mountain tea with honey (new favorite tea) and baked feta with olive oil, oregano, tomatoes, and what tasted like banana peppers, very yummy. If you are coming from Athens, bring a book or something to do on the 4 hour train ride. Prices on food for the train are good... large chocolate croissant and espresso coffee for 2 euros.

Convenient, Helpful, Knowledgeable

Mr. George picked us up from our hotel. He was very helpful, knowledgeable, and nice. This was one of my favorite days of our trip - we drove along the coast to Cape Sounion and were able to learn about Athens from an Athenian. The lake was colder than I thought it would be (but it was a chilly/windy day in February). Also, one thing I didn’t know is that the lake has a bunch of tiny fish that will come up to you and eat the dead skin off if you stay still enough, I’ve always wanted to do this, so was pleasantly surprised! The lake is super clear and is surrounded by beautiful cliff edges. Would definitely recommend!

Off season visit worthwhile

We enjoyed this tour. Mount Olympus was stunning, and Dion was very interesting to visit as an active archaeological dig. Seeing these in the off-season was particularly nice with only a few people, including locals, at both sites. Damien was very friendly and knowledgeable. We learned quite a lot from him. The restaurant where we had our first break had delicious food and a very welcoming host. Monica was proactive in notifying us about the change in transportation, making sure we knew where and when to take our bus, as the train’s infrastructure was devastated from the massive floods this past September. Going by bus allowed us to see more of the country as well.

Long day

Tour guide was awesome fantastic day but extremely long no train service so had to rely on bus service 15hr bus ride there and back made a long day.

Not what was advertised.

This trip was not what we were promised. Due to track issues we were put on a bus with no explanation. We were not told trip was 10 hours on a bus. Did not get leisurely lunch due to time. Did not get to discover the village because of time. Should have been given option to cancel. Instead we got no explanation. We booked this trip due to train and village experience and got neither. If you are interested, ask lots of questions before.

Jason is a tremendous your guide

Jason was wonderful. He was so friendly and very knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Greek history and he answered all of our questions. He even took pictures of us. Excellent tour guide.

Beautiful views of Greece!

Our tour was great! Jason was our guide and he was very knowledgeable and made sure we stayed on track throughout the day to make it back to our train that evening. He shared his knowledge of each place we visited and took time to get to know us and make everyone feel comfortable. The train ride was a bit long so bring some snacks/something to keep you busy, although the scenery is nice to look at. The views from the trail on mount Olympus were beautiful and relatively easy to walk. Seeing the clear water of the river was and being there at sunset was even better! The views from the castle were breathtaking. The hike to the top was a bit strenuous, take note, but very worth it! We didn’t get to go inside, I assume it was closed, but we were okay with that. Overall a great day spent!

Positive - Long Day

Overall a great experience if you have limited time in Greece. You get to see a lot of the country side. It's a very long day and we would have loved to spend more time in this beautiful region of Greece. The team was responsive and helpful.

Jason was brilliant!

This was a rocky start, train was changed to a bus due to train issues in Athens and we got taken to the wrong stop. Not the company's fault and they handled it amazingly, our guide Jason came to Katerini to meet us and take us to the tour. Dion was brilliant and Mount Olympus was beautiful 😍 the only thing is it's a very long day so be prepared for that, and the amenities are not great in the area

Stunning views & so much history!

Mt. Olympus was beautiful. Platamon Castle was so interesting. The walk to Zeus’s bathtub was easy. There is so much history in Greece and this tour hits a little of everything. Our guide Damian was nice & knowledgeable. There was a bit of difficulty getting there, we had to switch from a train to a bus because of the train strikes & there was an issue at the station with our tickets. Thankfully we called Monika & she handled it. Overall a great tour!

Great guide leads beautiful tour

Unfortunately, the recent train accident in Greece has rendered this as a bus to local guide back to bus tour. As someone who loves train rides, that was an unwelcome surprise. However, our guide, Damien, was wonderful. A native of the region, he spoke glowingly of the surrounding area, all while educating us about the history of Greece, writ large, as well as the local nuggets that make an intimate tour like this such a beautiful experience. We toured the relics of Dion for an hour, then went to the adjacent museums for another 40 minutes. After a friendly, scrumptious mid day meal, we were off to a castle, with grand views all around. We headed off to Olympus after that, and we were rewarded with tremendous trip around the mid part of the mountain. Words cannot do the experience any true justice. The tour does make for a long day from Athens (16-17 hours), but the six hours with Damien made the to and fro truly worthwhile. This is a fantastic tour for anyone looking to escape the hustle of Athens to the northern part of Greece, to walk with the gods.

Great trip

Our tour guide was excellent and very well versed in the local culture and history. The Archeological site of Dion was terrific but needed more time (it closes at 3pm in the winter). The castle was also closed (3pm), but the views of the Aegean Sea were amazing. The views of Mount Olympus were spectacular (we were lucky, it was a clear say) and thr short/easy hike to the Bathtub of Zeus was filled with amazing scenery. Dinner in town was great. Would definitely recommend!!

A train to the Gods with a great meal

First and foremost, our driver Monika was fantastic and she made the trip a tremendous amount of fun. Be sure to leave early enough to get to the castle before 3 PM, although from the outside it was magnificent. The ruins at Dion were remarkable, given their scope and area., and the “bathtub of Zeus” was absolutely beautiful and breathtaking. Dinner and Meze Meze was also fantastic!!! Fried feta with honey and sesame was wonderful.

Great trip even with bad weather

Wasn’t sure what to expect when we first met our guide Monika at the train station since the weather was bad. Even though it was raining for part of the day she did a wonderful job at making sure we had a great time and were able to see everything we wanted to.

Train in vain.

Missed half the tour due to mistaking correct train station and therefore guide. Clarification of meeting point would help. Be warned that the train announcements can be brief and last minute! Mount Olympus was beautiful and was the highpoint of the trip.

Awesome

Jason was very conversational. He knew a lot of the history and philosophy. Very friendly. The train trip was fine. The ruins are ok. Only the theatre was more than just foundation. Less time at the small museums and more time on the beach would have been great. Especially since it was over 95 degrees. Overall worth it.

Amazing Tour

Fantastic!! Our tour guide Jason was amazing. He had lots of information and he was very patient. This tour is definitely worth taking if you want to see and walk up Mt. Olympus (short but super beautiful scenic route).

Just the hike up to the...

Just the hike up to the water fall was worth the trip. The dion was way too much time and museum didn’t have much. The guide was some what knowledgeable.

We had an amazing time...

We had an amazing time during this tour. Monika was our tour guide and she was great. She was very knowledgeable throughout the entire tour. We loved her stories and enjoyed learning about Olympus and the villages. It was a long day, but a great way to see more of Greece and get away from the busy city of Athens.

Gorgeous area of Greece

Monika was great. Very knowledgeable and shared so much wonderful information. It is a packed day, but absolutely worth it.

A great day out

I was very surprised to find I was the only one on the trip so I had a private guide. The area is beautiful and the walk through the gorge was amazing. There is a beautiful view of the coastline from the castle. The guide was very informative and friendly I would recommend this trip. Only downside was that I was unable to get a good view of mount Olympus due to the clouds.
