Athens: Sunset Tour to Cape Sounio and Temple of Poseidon

Great sunset views

This was a really nice trip. The temple at sunset was stunning and it wasn’t terribly crowded. The bus was comfy and while traffic back into the city was bad that is just the price of doing business in my mind. All in all totally recommend.

Nice, but not Sunday summer nights

It’s a good way to see the temple of Poseidon at sunset, although there’s too much time there, at least in June when the sun sets later. So you might as well plan to have dinner at the cafe there before going in. Seeing the temple itself won’t take much time. Also, try not to go on a Sunday in summer, as the traffic back to Athens is worse with those coming back from a weekend at the beach. It took an extra half hour at least on the bus.

Beautiful views

This tour was amazing! Our guide, Angelina, was a wealth of knowledge. You could tell how much she enjoyed what she was talking about, and she was able to paint a good picture of the history of Athens, different legends, and other fun tid bits while driving. The sun set off the cliff over the ocean was also stunning!

Mystical site

Wonderful moments at this mystical site. The sunset was tantalising , this unique experience is simply unforgettable

Totally advisable

It was a great tour despite the sunset wasn't as good as we hoped because of the haze. Temple of Poseidon is worth it and so is the view. Our guide Kalliroi was also very kind and explicative. She does a good job. Totally recommendable activity.

Mythologically Beautiful

Our guide was knowledgeable, accommodating and personable making our tour extremely pleasant. Beautiful!

Nice sunset with ancient greek touch

The sunset is really pretty. The temple is amazing. But the bus is a bit too hot. They turned the AC on at the trip to Poseidon temple. But on the way back, they turned it off. Maybe to save some energies.

A must do tour!

It was beautiful and breathtaking especially when you walked down the mountain. The tour was very good! The tour guide with the long black hair explained to us everything perfectly and in a very interesting way. Especially the stories about greek gods were very interesting. I would recommend everyone to do this tour, it was my personal highlight of my Athens tour!

Great sunset trip!

Iulia was a great guide, and she told great stories about the sites and the areas. The sunset was stunning, and the busride was nice and chill. All in all, a very excellent trip!

Great tour guide.

Rio was a wonderful tour guide. My only negative was the stop for a break was too soon. The sunset even though a little cloudy was wonderful. It would be wonderful to reverse the order of the drive. Along the coast first in daylight!

Lovely trip watching sunset

The sunset was very lovely, a good trip out and great organisation. Angelina was a great host. Maybe not completely worth the price but the coach is comfortable and it is an amazing view.

One of the World's Wonders.

The tour guide was excellent, but the sunset is something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Pretty place. Only need 30-60 minutes there max

A busy trip with 3 52 seater coaches. The metro journey to meet the trip was straightforward. The journey to the theatre and temple felt quick. The coastal joy on the way back took quite a time. The theatre was good to see and the temple. It felt like we had a very long time at the temple. The views at sunset were gorgeous. Effectively transport was provided and nothing else.

Had a great time! Angelina was funny and very helpful. The sunset was beautiful and we got some great pics.

Highly recommended! Our excellent guide , Angelina, was very informative and very helpful. The bus driver Andreas drove very well and got us safely from Athens to Cape Sounion and back to Syntagma. The Temple of Poseidon sunset is a must!! Beautiful setting.

Easy, well organized trip

The bus was clean and the driver took us safely to the two destinations. Vivienne was a knowledgeable and experienced guide. The stay in Sounio was a bit too long and the waiting for the sunset with the big crowd of people from other busses felt slightly overrated. The ride along the coast was enjoyable!

Fantastic value for money.

Fantastic value for money. Stopped off at a site on the way to the Poseidon temple. The guide Angelina was fantastic and entertaining and taught us so much about Greek history on the way. Recommend.

Nice trip, with a couple...

Nice trip, with a couple of decent stops and sunset itself was perfect. Our guide, Vassilis, was fantastic: really knowledgeable, interesting and informative. Only downside was a traffic jam leaving Sounio which held us up for half an hour and we got back to Athens quite late, but nothing they could do about that.

Amazing experience

Dimitra is a very knowledgeable guide and went over historic tit bits during our bus ride. The sunset at the temple of Poseidon itself was simply amazing. The stop at the theater was also a fun thing and nice addition to the trip. Will definitely recommend. This is an extremely popular place, so make sure you buy the tickets as soon as you reach there as the last entry is about 30 min before sunset and the lines can get pretty long at that time.

Nice tour in off-season

Great tour to see the sunset at Cape Sounio and temple of Poseidon. Nice extra to also see one of the oldest theatre in Greece.

Breathtaking

Our guide Angelina Jolie ;) was incredible. We learned so much about history, mythology and we loved the jokes too! The view up there was breathtaking and it was one of the most beautiful sunsets we ever got to see. 11/10

Beautiful views and great guide

I really enjoyed the trip guided by Vula. She told us a lot about the places we visited and about the history of Greece in general. She was very nice and knowledgeable, and she was happy to answer any of my questions. The sights were amazing, but one thing to keep in mind is that the first stop (the ancient theater) was not accessible for people with mobility issues. On the positive side, we didn't stay in that place for too long. The main sight (the temple of Poseidon) was accessible and incredibly beautiful.

We had a wonderful time....

We had a wonderful time. We only wished we had realized the pick up spot and drop off spot were 20 minutes apart. I wish the description was a bit clearer.

Check the weather and leave early to get to the meeting point

Check the weather before you book a date, and leave early because the meeting point is quite far & Athens city traffic is quite bDad. We went on a rainy day and couldn't see any of the sights along the way, but were blessed to have it stop by the time we got there. The sea, cliffs, and surrounding area was beautiful and worth the trip. The ruins themselves aren't particularly interesting to me. The tour guide on the bus told us stories of Greek mythology and gave us tips on places to eat/see. Overall it was an enjoyable trip.

Beautiful inspiring experience

Amazing trip to cape sounio and temple with extra bonus stop to see ancient theatre. Tour guide Vivienne was very interesting and informative with great passion and knowledge of archaeology. She made it a very enjoyable experience. The sunset across the cape was beautiful and something that will always to be remembered.

Fantastic and well-organised tour

Brilliant and friendly guide who knew her stuff on the sites we visited, and Greece as a whole. Very well-timed and comfortable journeys, felt like we had ample time at the sites, and loved seeing the sunset - highly recommended!

The tour took about 4.5 hours in total. The weather was perfect. Out tour guide Vivian was so nice. Her story telling of the history of Greece and the sites was really helpful.

Definitely a summer activity

This is definitely a tour you want to do in good weather! the temple of Poseidon had towering columns and great views from the temple itself. However we went on a day where it seemed like Poseidon himself was creating a huge storm the wind and the rain just ruined our trip, there where people in our group that were physically being knocked around by the wind and we ended up sitting in a little café to avoid the wind and rain for almost an hour. We did not appreciate the tour guide not giving us an option to go back early or sit on the bus because even with all our layers we were freezing. But if you plan correctly and go in summer/spring months the tour is a must do.

Great trip with bonus stop

Fantastic afternoon with a stop at an ancient theatre en route.Vivienne was an excellent guide with vast knowledge of all things, with a degree in archeology her stories made for an interesting drive. The Temple of Poseidon was incredible and the sunset photography made for a truly unique experience. Great value, my son (22) absolutely loved it

Beautiful sunset with beauty of the Sea

The tour guide was wonderful. The guide was an archaeologist and archaeology Masters degree student who gave a concise history of Greece.

Amazing views and informative commentary

The tour was as described. The sunset at Cape Sounion was just breathtaking, and it was wonderful to have had informative commentary from our excellent archaeologist-guide, Angelina, before arriving. The logic of departing from Halandri Metro Station was clear as it avoided spending time in heavy Athens traffic (and it was very easy to reach from the city centre). It was also great to visit the ancient theatre at Thorikos on the way, adding an extra dimension.

Amazing place. The tour is a definite. Our guide was very knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this tour when you visit Athens.

This included not only information related to the sites, but also Greek history, mythology, and recommendations for special places in Athens. The tour included not only the temple of Poseidon but also an additional ("bonus") site, making it more special. The views were wonderful. Recommended tour.

Great tour, highly recommend!

The tour was very well organised and was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Our guide, Angelina, was friendly and knowledgeable, while accommodating to our every need throughout the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed this day trip while learning a lot more about Greece through Angelina and I'd say it was well worth the money!

Amazing Tour, Amazing Tour Guide!!!

We really enjoyed our Tour Guide Voula!!! She filled the trip with so much information and incredible stories that the ride to the Temple of Poseidon passed so quickly. If by any chance you can get to reserve a trip with Voula the Spartan DO IT! We had so much fun, and the sunset was picturesque. Our driver Gordon was also amazing... his navigation on the winding roads was impeccable. I strongly suggest taking this tour if you are solo, with others or even with a group. Just remember the name "Voula from Sparta!!!"

Great day but could have skipped amphitheatre

Visiting the Temple of Poseidon was fantastic, however we also stopped at an amphitheatre on the way. I wish we only stayed here for 5 mins (we stayed 30 mins+) because while we were there the sunset colours would have made a spectacular photo at the Temple of Poseidon. By the time we arrived at the Temple of Poseidon the sun had gone behind the clouds and I did not get any shots that I wanted. Why not skip the amphitheatre and maybe have it as an option on some tours for those who wish to see it?

Sunset at Poseidon's Temple

Sunset at the temple of Poseidon was beautiful. It was nice to have a place to grab a drink and a bite while there. I would have preferred not to go to the amphitheater and for the tour to have been between 3-4 hours and not 5 -6 hours.

Stunning tour

Wow this was a spectacular tour, our tour guide Vasilis was an enthusiastic knowledgeable person in all things history. He made our tour very special. The sunset over Poseidon temple was magnificent.

Don’t book this if you’re...

Don’t book this if you’re not using to take the tube/metro in Athens! DON’T BOOK THIS! Because of uncontrollable circumstances (getting completely lost at the Athens tube) I arrived at the meeting point (which is quite far from the city centre) 9 minutes late and so I couldn’t join the tour. I kept contacting the tour company and they knew I would arrive at the meetinf point 9 minutes late (I had told them 40 minutes before the meeting time that I would be 9 minutes late) but still they couldn’t wait. I understand that it’s their police but I just wouldn’t recommend this tour for anyone traveling for the first time in Athens as if you’re less than 10 minutes late, they will leave. I understand they cannot be late but it was 9 minutes. Less than 10 minutes

Highly recommended. Everything was thoughtfully organised, starting from the clear instructions to get to the meeting point. Angelina was a fabulous tour guide, keeping us entertained and informed throughout the trip with historical and archaeological titbits.

Our tour guide/shaparon ws very knowledgeable and answered many questions on the route there and back. She made the trip both fun and informative! I also liked that when we got to the temple, we were able to go off and explore the temple at our own pace, however she remined close to answer any questions anyone had. 5/5!
