3-Day Trip to Delphi and Meteora from Athens

Worth the visit

Wonderful trip to Delphi & the Monasteries. Tour was well organised, Tour guides were very informative. Accommodation was good.

Not worthwhile . 2nd day is a complete waste of your time

The 3 days 2 nights trip is a waste of money and times. Will advice people to do a day trip to Delhi and then anor trip to Meteora. The understanding was you will be in the same group with same tour guide but no. You join the delphi day trip then they drop you at hotel in delphi at 2:30 pm. There was just me and an American couple doing this trip. Free and easy and delphi is a pretty small town but enjoyable. Next day join another tour group with anor guide. The whole 2nd day is wasted as you are just heading to town next to Meteora and reach there like 6pm. Designated dinner time so you have no flexibility. Worse thing hotel is like 7 km from town and you need to hire a taxi to town for euro 12 one way. 2nd day was a complete waste of a day !

Very disappointing triple

Very bad trip, spent most time on the bus The hotel they put you in in Metrora is more like a 2 star hostel - smelly and disgusting. Not much to see in Delphi. Overrated trip not worth your time and money

Long trip but incredible sights.

Pros - Great knowledgeable and informative guides - Rose in Delphi and Yiota for Meteora. The bus drivers were very good also. The places we saw were fantastic - archeological site of Delphi, Delphi Museum, the scenery, Thermopylae, Meteora and entrance to two of the monasteries in Meteora. The bus rides were always broken up in segments of 2 hours or less so we had a fair amount of stops. Neutral - the Amalia Hotels were not necessarily great but had a pool, a bar, lots of lounging areas, etc. The rooms were clean but dated. The food at the restaurant/buffet was just ok - not great. However, we noted that these hotels seem to be where ALL the tour groups went. If you join any bus tour (with any company), this is where you go. The Amalia Hotel in Meteora was just a bit nicer than the one in Delphi. Cons - The way this tour works, after the visit to the archeological site and museum of Delphi, you have free time from around 2pm on Day 1 to 1:30pm on Day 2. It’s basically a full day in the small town of Delphi. It’s just too much time unless you’re happy to lounge at the pool most of the day. The hotel is also at the edge of town and it takes a few minutes walk up/down hills to get to the center of town. It would have been nice to have a shuttle or another activity or some other option of things to do during this free time. On Day 2, after being free the whole morning, you are picked up to go to Meteora at 1:30 pm. Unfortunately, we weren’t told that the first stop would be a 1hr lunch at a taverna. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time but our guides changed in Delphi so we don’t know who should have told us. Maybe it should be in the itinerary listed for the trip. The trip to Meteora was through the mountains and while very scenic, it was long and with so many switchbacks, some got motion sickness. So, be sure to bring medicine. One of the best things to do in Meteora is to see the sunset. However, this trip gets there around 7pm with the included buffet dinner around 8pm. Sunset was around 8:40pm for us so you won’t see the sunset unless you make your own independent arrangements and perhaps skip the included buffet dinner. The day 3 schedule is tight and you have to be up and on the bus early so perhaps it’s why viewing the sunset late the night prior isn’t included. The pool also closes at 8pm so not much chance to enjoy that either. All in all, a trip worth doing to see these wonderful places.

Consider a day trip

We had very mixed feelings about this trip. The monestaries were beautiful and absolutely worth the trip/drive. However our first guide for the Delphi portion was not very pleasant and provided a stilted incomplete history. We also skipped a stop due to poor time management. We loved the relaxing 24 hour stop in the Amalia hotel in Delphi - but primarily because we were a week + into our trip. It might feel like a waste of time if you don't want to relax. Our second guide was wonderful and the bus drivers were quite professional. The food was VERY disappointing because the dinner/breakfast you pay for is buffet which is fine but then we stopped for lunch the last two days at places the tour picked and had to pay for restaurants we didn't want to eat at. The lunches were poor quality and overpriced.

Very well organized and coordinated tour to 2 wonderful destinations!

Both destinations are worthwhile! This was conducted by CHAT tours. We were sent a message via the app with a more specific pickup time at our hotel on day 1. There were people picked up for multiple tours but then we were transferred to the bus that would take us to our tour. They organized and coordinated everything very well. The hotels in Delphi and Kalambaka (near Meteora) were Amalia Hotels and nice to stay. Breakfast and Dinner were provided for 2 days and both buffet style. The guides we had (Joy and Dimitra) were excellent and very knowledgeable and kept us well informed.

Do NOT pay extra for the first class hotel!

I paid for an upgrade for first class hotel but I found out that everyone is going to same hotel and there is no upgrade for hotel or rooms. I asked for partial refund for the difference but they're not doing anything. In addition, there is almost no activities on the 2nd day while we were in Delphi, wasted a lot of our time.

Amazing Sights in Greece!

Our 3-day trip to Delphi and Meteora was unforgettable! We loved the archeological sights in Delphi, the beautiful monasteries and view in Meteora, as well as all the extra details of the trip--nice people on the bus, great and knowledgeable guide, beautiful hotels, fantastic meals--especially the lunch at the seaside in Itea near Delphi!

Very good tour, definitely recommended

Everything was amazing except the Hotel in Meteora was disappointing. The tours were well organized & we had two great guides - Joy in Delphi & Effie in Meteora. Drivers were incredible too, including Nik who stopped the bus to save turtles crossing the road. Hotel in Delphi was good - food good, service was great. Location was wonderful & spectacular views. Hotel in Meteora was disappointing. Wifi was terrible, zero sound buffering in rooms & loud, echoing hallways. Pool closed too early too (8 pm), which didn’t help us as we arrived just past 7 & then dinner was served. Hotel is also outside town, so nothing to do. Sheets are scratchy, as was the toilet paper! However, it seemed all worth it the next day when we went to the monasteries & were blown away by the breathtaking scenery. I would recommend this tour, just don’t have high expectations of the hotels.

Excellent

I had arrived in Athens a few days before my traveling companions and so I decided to book this tour rather than hanging around Athens. The trip was well organised and it is a great way to see two of the most important sites in Greece. I did not feel rushed at all and there was even some spare free time to explore on my own. The Amalia Hotel in Delphi was beautiful and well located. The Amalia Hotel in Meteora is a much bigger and older establishment but perfectly adequate. The tour includes a drop off at the end and instead of traveling all around Athens I would suggest that you get off the bus near a Metro station and make your own way back to your hotel. Of course this would all depend upon the amount of luggage you have with you.

Knowledgable guides, first class accommodations

It was a great way to end my 3 week visit to Greece and the islands! I appreciated the constant communication prior to the trip, to help us reconfirm with the local tour operator CHAT Tours, and everything was clear. I was amazed by the beauty of the landscape and mountains throughout this tour, which was unexpected. Our tour guides (one in Delphi and another in Meteora) were fantastic and very knowledgable. I'm not normally one for big group tours, but everything was made easy, and I'm glad I chose the 3 day vs. the 2 day version of this trip, so that we had 24 hours in Delphi to explore additional sites and wander the village, have cappuccinos on patios overlooking the amazing views, and swim in the Amalia Hotel pool. It was well organized and admissions and entries to sites were handled for us. The downside was the long drive home, the volume of tour buses at these sites, and the busy rest stops. These are heavily visited UNESCO Heritage Sites, and I hadn't realized that, or the distances prior to the trip. It would have been handy to have a road map of Greece with me to track the journey and help me remember the little towns we went through.

Better to take the two or four day trip

Delphi and Meteora are truly amazing. There are just better ways to see them. Chat Tours and Amalia Hotels are under the same ownership, so these tours all use the Amalia Hotels. The hotel in Delphi is quite nice and conveniently located; the one near Meteora is far from town but adequate. Breakfast and dinner are at the hotel.The bus stops for lunch (you pay for this meal) at rest areas where many tour buses stop. Food included at the hotel is a buffet and not particularly good. The way this tour works is that you participate in the Delphi day tour until the middle of day one, then the bus drops you at the hotel and you are on your own in Delphi for twenty-four hours until you meet up with their four-day tour group and continue onward with that group to Meteora. Our tour guides were knowledgable though the Delphi guide was unclear on what exactly to do with the three day people. My conclusion at the end of the tour is that you may as well take the less expensive two-day tour and save the extra money that you spend to stay the day in Delphi. You might also look for a tour that has better food.

<p>To summarize I would say a great tour - but not without flaws. Seating on the bus was somewhat chaotic - especially if you join the bus at the end of the pick up from your hotels - you end up sitting apart from your travel companion without any sympathy from the tour guide - worse was when we were shunted from Chats tours to another tour operator after the Delphi overnight stop - it ended up wasting hours of idleness . The Amalia hotels used on the tour was great - most outstanding was the hotel in Kalambaka as far as standards go but unfortunately very far out of town - impossible to walk to town, so one is very much confined to the hotel grounds. The sights on tour was great : Delphi visit was amazing although too short - great pity that there was no stop at the beautiful town of Arachova - it is a major oversight of the tour organizers to not include a stop-over here. Meteora is mind blowing - a must see for anyone visiting Greece. The tour and route from Delphi to Kalambaka Meteora includes beautiful mountain scenery. The stop at Thermopylae and the statue of Leonidas is very informative thanks to the great tour guide. Even with the flaws I would still recommend this tour with a 5-star rating.</p>

This trip was excellent value for...

<p>This trip was excellent value for money. Whilst we were split across a couple of groups to complete our experience, the times and rendezvous points were made quite clear, and the staff were punctual. So we had two tour guides: the first, Stathos ? created a great narrative, first as we left Athens toward Delphi and then at Delphi itself as we took 'the sacred route' to the temple of Apollo. This gave the information context and sequence. Our second guide, Irini, was also excellent - informative, easy to understand and thorough. The coach travel takes you through some amazing scenery from fantastic mountains to broad plains, allowing comfortable viewing of parts of Greek countryside that might not otherwise be visited, and the sites themselves make an excellent combination. The accommodation was comfortable - with the swimming pools being most welcome - although they were not of the quality advertised, especially with respect to the food which tended more to mass production than a dining experience. Delphi and Meteora are remarkable places visiting with knowledgable guides adds enormously to the experience and this tour is very good value for money.</p>

Delphi and Meteora are both great...

<p>Delphi and Meteora are both great locations to visit, and putting them in one trip also limits the time you spend in the bus travelling though the views are amazing on the way. Our guides for both locations were entertaining and knowledgeable. The Amalia hotels where we stayed were also very nice, though the Kalabaka Meteora site was somewhat out of the town proper. On the other hand, we thought that the trip itinerary allocated too much time at Delphi. That portion of the tour was not taxing enough to require a night stop, and the major sights were covered in the walking tour though the guide skipped the Athena Pronaia temple. We felt later that it would have been more efficient to take the 2-day version of this trip far cheaper, too!, since the extra day adds no guided activities.</p>

Combining 1,2,3 and 4 day tours...

<p>Combining 1,2,3 and 4 day tours created problems, different guides, a pack of 48 people trying to follow and hear commentary in museums and churches was totally impossible. The use of headsets would have helped.<br/> The overcrowded bus led to seat battles. Some tour companies use a seat rotation system to overcome impolite clients. This may have helped.</p> <p>The first guide , a lady , was good, this was before the various groups were combined, the second man whilst funny, always started, before the 48 had assembled. The trip to Delphi was very good and the ruins were excellent but the highlight was to see the monasteries at Meteora perched on the very top of the mammoth rocks. Nothing like it. <p>The trip was quite nice. The hotels we were staying at were quite good, and the tour was conducted in a very relaxed pace that was exactly what I was looking for. Take note that it may not necessarily be conducted with 1 bus. I got dropped off at a hotel in Delphi by on bus that was doing 1 day trip to Delphi, and the next day after lunch I have gotten picked up by the bus doing 4 day trip. That was ok, although it would have been nicer if it has been communicated in the tour description.</p>

<p>It was a first for us and we enjoyed our trip around Greece. The 1st leg of the tour from Athens to Delphi was a real treat. Our guide Evie was a 'fire-cracker' and made everyone feel welcomed and excited about the trip. Her storytelling and positivity kept us all engaged at all time. On the 2nd leg of our tour we joined a different group. Meteora was also impressive, but it was Delphi that took our breaths away also because you had to climb up the hill in the heat. Both hotels were pleasant and beds were comfortable. The only downside was the food, which was less of a greek buffet and more of a international mix of pastas and meats. <br/> All together it was an interesting experience and one we enjoyed.</p>

We were lucky to get good idea on day 1, however day 2 n 3 our guide didn't provide that much information. Also this trip can be done in 2 days if u don't have sufficient time. Delphi and Meteora were really beautiful. Hotels were not that great. Delphi hotel had beautiful view.</p>

The pick-up in the Plaka was a...

<p>The pick-up in the Plaka was a little scrambled but the young lady who attended recovered everything by the time we arrived at the main assembly hotel. The drive out of Athens and through the agricultural countryside was less than interesting but then agriculture is agriculture the world over, really. The tour guide, a nice man who was certainly well informed, did his best to make it interesting. Only when the Parnassus loomed into vie after a couple of hours did the drive become more interesting. Actually the defect with this tour is the very extensive driving involved, not really improved by the assurances that, once the freeway is completed, it will be a lot shorter. The distances really are substantial so if you don't like long trips in bus seats that don't recline and with air conditioning systems that don't really work, think about taking this tour again. The hotels (Amalia at both Delphi and Meteora) do both the accommodation and food well, particularly at Delphi in that stunning setting. The rush and bustle at the historical sites is off-putting but that is Greece today. I dread to think what Delphi would have been like peak season. Considering the time spent in a bus seat relative to the time spent at the sites, this is a loooooong, expensive bus ride broken by short periods of attendance at the historical sites and some very comfortable rest-overs in the selected hotels.</p>

<p>We really enjoyed these tours and had excellent guides for each. We chose the first class accommodation at both towns and it was very nice with plenty of choices for both breakfast and dinner. The only negative for this tour was the 24 hour stopover in Delphi. I was aware of this after reading previous reviews but as I wanted my husband to see the town of Delphi we had no choice. We were dropped off at the hotel in Delphi around 2.30 pm one day then picked up at 3pm the next. We had walked the streets of Delphi many times over and it was too cold to swim in the pool, so we sat for quite a few hours just waiting to get picked up. So if the weather is hot and you are happy to sit around the pool, or read a good book, this tour will suit you. If not, think twice about taking it. Check out was at 12 and our pick up time kept getting later and later. By the time we got on the bus we were pretty annoyed. Its a pity they don't have a one day tour to Meteora so you could take both tours independently and not spend a precious day of your holidays sitting around doing nothing.</p>

<p>This was a good tour, we got to see a monastary and a nunery with some amazing views. There is a number of steps one must however climb and thanks to it been quite popular there is a lot of people in a small amount of space. I am glad I did this tour, however I thought it would be more of the isolated religious areas of Meteora, but we went to the locations very close to the road instead. Be prepared to be left in Delphi without a tour guide and maybe only a few passengers all on your own as you combine with day trippers to get there. Also the bus was nearly an hour late to pick us up for the 2nd day, so be prepared to wait around a bit, as well as been very rushed when you are actually in the Delphi museum etc. The hotels we stayed in were nice, spectacular views off the hotel balcony in Delphi!</p>

<p>My trip was in two segments, the first to Delphi. Our guide, Daphne, was incredible. Not only was she knowledgeable but also very enthusiastic and helpful in getting me setup for the next day. The next day I was picked up and enjoyed a trip through the plains of Greece with another great tour guide. I had been having knee problems and was worried about climbing stairs, but we drove right up to the monasteries and I was able to climb the rest of the way with only little difficulty. The hotels on both days were very comfortable. I would definitely recommend this trip.</p>

<p>The local operator, Chat Tours, is professional and conscientious with knowledgeable guides. All the logistics and communication for our hotel pickups, tours, hotels and meals were excellently managed. The free afternoon and morning my daughter and I were able to enjoy in Delphi was a perfect mid-vacation break (12 days in Greece). Delphi has some excellent souvlaki and bakeries/cafes, as well as souvenir shops with hand-made Greek items. We hiked a lovely section of the E4 trail which is very well marked.</p>

In the morning of Day 2, we took a taxi on our own to the port/town of Itea. It cost 25 euros 1 way and it was NOT worth it. Better to walk around Delphi and/or enjoy the nice swimming pool at the hotel.<br/> The drive back from Meteora to Athens is a long one. 5 hours + another hours depending on the number of drop-offs.</p> <p>Conclusion:<br/> Delphi and Meteora is certainly worth the visit. The tour itself would have been better if it was only a 2 day/1 night trip.</p>

<p>We booked the first class accommodations for the tour at an extra price but everyone stayed at the same hotel with breakfast included so there was no need to pay extra. We were upset by this deceitful advertising. The tour itself was very good, especially the guide on the second two days. We had booked a 3 day tour and didn't realize that we would be dropped off at the hotel in Delphi and stay there 24 hours while we waited to be picked up by the bus for the 4 day tour to Meteora to continue our tour. We think this also could have been more clear in your advertising.</p>

One thing that could've been improved was informing people if they would be joining other groups later in the tour at the start of the tour. On day 1, I was with a group of people that went to Delphi. When we got to the hotel for lunch, I was told I would be joining another group tomorrow since the group I was with would be returning to Athens. I had to ask the tour guide more questions for more info. I would appreciate this info early on so I would not be caught off caught.</p>

My family was extremely disappointed...

<p>My family was extremely disappointed with this tour. We left Athens on a three day tour, but after visiting Delphi sites were were taken to the hotel and left without any information. We were then left to join another tour group.Our new guide did not contact us when she arrived that evening and were told that she went out with a friend. When visiting Delphi the next day we missed much of the archeological site as the museum time took too long, but she was happy to waste 2 hours at lunch, not close to town, whilst the group struggled to order.She was again no where in sight. The accommodation at both Delphi and Kalambaka were 2 star at best, instead of 4, and not close to any town or attraction. On our visit to Meteora our guide wore a dress well above the knee after instructiung the group to wear long dresses or skirts. Which many people found inappropriate. In summary, our guide facilitated the journey at best. She was uncaring, and uninterested in the well being of the group and certainly not engaging. The driver was excellent, helpful and delivered us safely and we thank him for that. I would not recommend this tour to anyone. The time was not well utilised, the way that it was organised it could have been done in 2 days. We could have had a much better experience, given the spectacular beauty of the places we visited. Disappointing and not good value for money! This was generally the opinion of the other travellers as well.</p>

We had a fantastic trip, the tour guides, hotels as well as locations are recommended for all fellow travellers. The 2 day trip option is also available, however the 3 day option is perfect for those looking for a relaxed tour with a half day break for recuperation. The guides were very informative and shared insights on Greek culture, mythology, education as well as demographics. Excellent experience!

The trip was spectacular we really enjoyed Delphi and Meteora it was well worth the money and I would recommend it to all. The only negative was been dropped at the Delphi hotel without any feel back from the guide we didnt know what was going on or what was the plan for the next day we were at a loss.

A bit of a take. You travel to Delphi...

A bit of a take. You travel to Delphi on 1 tour and spend that day and until 1400 hrs the next in Delphi. Then on to Meteora to overnight and the 3rd day to the monastries and back to Athens. In effect we wasted a day.

If you are still considering whether to...

If you are still considering whether to go on this tour, do not hesitate! Delphi and Meteora are the "must see" places in Greece and indeed they are amazing, especially Meteora. Organization of the tour was perfect, hotels could not have been better each had a pool so you could cool off a bit after a long day but the best was the tour guide. Thanks to her, we got to know Greece, Greek tradition and habits much better. The trip was one of the best I had. Efharisto thank you in Greek Viator and the local agency!

The first guide was fantastic! The second guide wasn't nearly as good, we couldn't really understand him, and he seemed constantly stressed out. On the way back, you are dropped off at your hotel. As we were traveling to Crete that night, we asked to be dropped to Piraeus as we thought the bus would pass right by. He rudely said there was no way to be dropped off there, but we passed by right where we needed to go but had to pay extra metro fare and waste an hour to get there from the center because the guide didn't feel like being helpful. The hotels were OK, the food wasn't great and the included meals are all buffets. Also none of the hotels had a double bed, just two singles stuck together, which may be an issue for you. It certainly was not comfortable. The sites are spectacular and should be done. Your call on whether the tour is the way to go. Viator wasn't the best experience for us - their customer service is pretty horrific. My advice is to find another tour.

The first day to Delphi was very good, and the tour guide was excellent. The second and third day were disappointing, with hours on the bus to spend just two hours in Meteora, and the guide was poor and spoke very little.

The company does a good tour but make sure you are seeing all there is to see at each site. I think there are multiple versions at the same location. Upgraded hotel in Delphi has a great location, the one at Metora is well outside town. The stops are all good for photos and the time alloted is plenty to see what there is to see.
