Free Walking Tour of Vienna

I highly recommend Prime Tours. My husband, daughter and I did this tour on Friday evening at 6pm. Our guide, Anita, was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. She explained historical and cultural references very clearly. The tour was conducted at a very good pace. I would highly recommend this tour.

Awesome walking tour of Vienna!

Had the evening walking tour with Sven and it was awesome! He had a lot of information and you really feel like you see all of Vienna in the 2 hours you’re walking. Great thing to do in the beginning of a trip to really see the city!

OK free walking tour of Vienna

We booked this free walking tour of the highlights of Vienna on-line (as recommended on the Prime Tours website). The website also stated that a maximum number of 35people would be allowed on the tour. Unfortunately, on the day we went on their tour the group consisted of over 50people (&at one stage there was 60 -I spent a few minutes counting them) Our tour guide, Elizabeth, did not seem to mind the number of people on her tour , some joined in part way through, but in my view there were too many people. As far as the tour itself was concerned, we found it interesting with lots of history and covering areas such as Albertina, the Opera House, the Hofburg, St Peter's church &St Stephens church. Although our guide was friendly enough there was not enough humour in her tour (unlike other similar tours I have been on). Overall, I would only recommend booking up on this tour if a maximum number of people could be guaranteed, but this may be difficult as it's a free tour &the guide is only paid by tips!

Really friendly and fun tour, we learnt a lot about the history and culture of Vienna, and also got some great tips for good food and places to visit. We even decided to stay an extra night in Vienna! Would really recommend :)

Great tour but big group

Benjamin did an excellent tour of the city. He spoke very clearly and with a sense of humor. Only downside was the very large group

Free walking tour

We did the free walking tour with Wolfgang. He was interesting, knowledgeable and fun and gave us great basic information about the history of Austria, Vienna and the buildings we saw. Thank you! PS. The one minus was the large size of the group.

Wolfgang is great!

Wolfgang gave a fantastic tour of Vienna! He was very friendly and clearly incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Vienna and Austria more widely. He engaged with every member of the group and was very considerate - seeking out shade to keep us out of the hot Viennese sun! I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and learned loads about Vienna I otherwise never would have. I personally found the sections in the Hofburg Palace Complex particularly interesting. This was advertised as a free tour (with the usual expectation of paying tips at the end) but Wolfgang never made a big deal of the money. Not having a huge budget myself I wasn't made to feel guilty about not being able to tip as much as some of the other guests. My only criticism would be that the directions to find the guides could be a little clearer!

A personable introduction to Vienna!

Our walking tour of Vienna's first district with Anita was fantastic. Anita is both a knowledgeable and engaging guide, and maintained an upbeat and positive energy throughout the entire tour! The tour took us through some important and iconic sites at the heart of Vienna, and Anita was sure to draw upon various elements and topics of conversation to suit all interests in the group. This tour is a great introduction to the vast historic and culturally rich city of Vienna.

The tour guide never showed up!

Although it was drizzling pretty miserably, around 30 people showed up on or before time for this very well rated tour. We all waited in the rain for our tour guide who never showed up. They also didn’t answer their phone. While I hope nothing was wrong with our guide, I do expect at least an email saying “I can’t make it for whatever reason”. Instead you saw hopeful people braving the rain and leaving pair by pair. Unprofessional amateurs if you ask me. 1/5 because 0/5 was not available.

Benjamin gives a great tour

The tour was very educational and the atmosfhere on the tour was great. Benjamin showed us many beautiful sites in Vienna and gave us some usefull informations important for the tourist.

We took the free walking tour with Anita and it was superb. I've done countless walking tours all over Europe and Anita is by far the most engaging and informed tour guide I've seen. Highly recommended.

Free Walking Tour Vienna

On Saturday, August 31 2019 at 18:00 I had a booked Free Walking tour and the guide did not appear! Not a professional and an absolute waste of my time!!!!!

Great tour with Benjamin!

Ben led us around the old town for two hours. The tour hits on different centuries within a period of about 1200 years, but it was clear and interesting for people with or without previous knowledge of Austrian history. I’d recommend this tour and I’d certainly recommend our excellent guide.

Reasonable

Guide Benjamin gave us solid tours around old city, I recommend it. They splitted the group in half so it was easier to listen and engage with the guide.

Too large of group, too much Hadsburg

Group was too large. Could not always hear guide. DId not cover to much of Vienna or learn about Vienna as a whole other then a lot of history of ruling family.

Best tour in town

Oksana was the best, she told us all about the city and was super nice, recomend do with her and she stop in the shadow during the summer this was the best thing lol.

Florian was a great guide

We were absolute glad we took the tour with Florian. He told vividly and with great entusiasm about kings, queens, art, nazism, intrigues and fun facts from Wien. It is hard to imagine a better tour guide. I absolutely recommend going on tour with Florian.

Walking tour with Anita

Yesterday had an amazing tour of Vienna with Anita, she was very professional and managed her very large group of tourists well, her knowledge of Vienna was incredible and no question unanswered, if you are going to Vienna we highly recommend a tour with her.

Very good tour

Bettina took us on a great tour of the city centre and gave us tons of information on the history of not only the city but the country! Gave lots of amazing recommendations on food and drink to try and delivered a very funny tour. Would do again!

Free Walking Tour Vienna

I have never had such a poor experience on a walking tour as I did on this one. I went on this tour on August 3rd with a few of my friends and we had Elizabeth as our guide. She was very knowledgeable and told the group many interesting things about the city, but her voice wasn't loud enough to carry over the whole group and often she would begin speaking at a new location before the majority of the group had the chance to gather around her again. I know it is difficult to speak to that many people with the noise of the city and traffic around and be heard clearly all the time, so my friends and I would quietly repeat some information to each other if someone couldn't hear what Elizabeth had just said. We were careful to speak quietly in low voices to each other so we wouldn't make it harder for people around us in the group to hear our guide. We would also chat together as the group walked to the different locations, as friends do, but we were always mindful to end our conversations quickly and quietly at each stop. At a stop approximately an hour or a little more into the tour, Elizabeth came up to me after the group had gathered around her and bluntly asked me "if you are going to talk for the whole tour, why take the tour? What is the point? Why bother joining if you are going to talk the entire time?" I explained that we were talking about the tour and listening to her, but she repeated her question in increasingly condescending voice. I wasn't sure how else to explain the situation so I repeated my answer as well. Elizabeth then told me "I don't have to accept everyone on my tours, so that is what I am going to do now and tell you to leave. You can take your little friends and go". I have never been spoken to with so much contempt or disrespect. After having her treat me this way I did not want to continue the tour any more so my "little friends" and I left. This situation was handled completely inappropriately by the guide. We did not know she was upset by our murmured, brief conversations until she abruptly told us to leave. She could have easily approached one of us during a walk between locations on the tour and politely asked us to refrain from speaking at the stops while she was talking, instead of belittling us in front of the entire tour group. We would have taken extra care to not talk at the tour stops if the guide had given us the chance to do so and if she had approached the issue in a civil manner.

Overall, great experience and way to see the city

It was overall a very good tour, enjoyed the history and architecture pointed out throughout the tour. Guide was well-informed, but the overall tour left little time for pictures or wandering. It felt a bit rushed. However, it was good weather and there were helpful tips throughout - overall 4/5!

Highly recommend!

I highly recommend this walking tour to anyone visiting Vienna, to get a general glimpse of the historical city and main attractions. Especially Anita, the tour guide, was very nice and energetic, she made the tour super interesting, while also entertaining and easy to understand! Highly recommend it!

Free Walking Tour Vienna

Our guide was Katarina (Not sure if that's the right spelling). She was simply the most enthusiastic and bubbly person I have ever met. Such a cheery personality, who at the same time was so well read about Viennese history. She also delivered the content in a very interesting way. After the end of the tour, she was so very helpful and helped us plan our remaining stay in Vienna, in terms of places to visit and cuisines to try out. She really made our day! Nice Tour of Vienna

My family participated in the free walking tour of Vienna with Ben as our guide. It was a nice overview of the city and its history. It was 2 hours but not a great deal of walking. Ben also gave us a great recommendations of restaurants to try in the city.

Super Tour!

Very nice lady explaining history in details and made us the tour around main sightseeings. I would defibitely recommend it.

Great Tour

The lady that did the tour was wonderful. She is Austrian which really brought a vision that is from a local point of view. I find many of these tours are done by Americans or Brits and it’s just not the same. Besides, she even explained the Holy Roman Empire better than some books I read! She was entertaining and very informative. I wish I recalled her name. Older with a straw hat, blond hair.

Too bigger group - Disappointing

We were in Vienna for just one day on 9 July and decided on the free walking tour which stated at 11am on the square opposite the tourist information. We were wondering if we were in the right place as by 10:50 the our guide had not showed up. Just before 11:00 he asked the big group of 40 + if we all had reservations. The guide advised us to stand in front of him and as near as possible so we could all hear, Due to the large size of the group this was impossible and resulted in us hardly being able to hear him. After about 45 minutes, whilst walking down the main shopping street we just gave up and left the group, something I have never done before on a walking tour. The guide said at the start of the tour to some other people that the group normally gets smaller after 10 mins as people drop out, this does not surprise me due to the large numbers that were present. The guide also explained about the tipping procedure that he as the guide gets half of what is paid and the company get the rest. I can now understand why you like to get as many people as possible on your tours, to make as much money a possible, regardless of the experience tourists receive by having a negative experience by being in a large group. I would have much rather paid to go on a tour which had a smaller group so I could have enjoyed the tour and heard what the guide was saying. To have such a large number of people in a tour group, this just simply DOES NOT WORK. We only had one day in Vienna and our experience was not good due to the number of people Prime Tours invites to their tours. To add, I have been on many free walking tours in other countries and have never had this poor disappointing experience. I would not recommend this tour with PrimeTours and felt the tour was a waste of time.

Very informative and interesting

Our guide Kristina was very enthusiastic about the tour she gave and that made it enjoyable for us. She was very informative and we learnt a lot, not only about the history of Vienna but also the culture which is equally as important. Highly recommend

Enjoyed a lot

This waking tour was a great introduction to Viennas history and life. We really enjoyed Oksana, her way of storytelling and guiding. She is an interesting and fun guide and I would definitely recommend her as a guide to anybody interested in Vienna's history. Thank you very much!

Interesting tour but poorly executed

If you brand the tour as a “free walking tour”, it is completely unacceptable and rude to demand more money then the tip which we have already generously given, before going on to march us to the ATM to get out more money after calling us up in front of the tour which made our friend cry. I understand that the tour guides are paid through a tip basis but we were made to feel very uncomfortable and embarrassed by the end of the tour. I would not recommend this tour to those who are travelling on budget as they did not take into account the concept of free walking tours allowing people to pay what is within their budget. Other then this the tour was interesting and we learnt a lot.

What a great way to get to know Vienna

We had a great time with this tour. Our tour guide, Benjamin, even told us some personal experiences. Going off-script like this makes for a better connection between the guide and the group, even with the group being on the larger side. The tour was very informational and a great way to learn the history behind the buildings and figures that lived there. The tour lasted around one and a half hour, making it not too long to lose focus, and long enough to learn a lot. To conclude, great tour!

Nice tour with Ben!

With a group of friends we wanted to do a free walking tour. This is a really good tour with lot’s of stories about the history of Vienna! Ben(jamin) was out tour gide and he wore traditional Austrian clothing! Would definitly recommend this tour if you want to get to know the city center!

Brilliant Introduction to a Beautiful City

We came across the free walking tour as soon as we arrived in Vienna. Tour was quick and easy to book and we were especially impressed we could book a tour for the next hour! The tour was very informative and provided a great introduction to Vienna which gave us a large overview of the city and it’s wonderful culture/history. Our guide, Anita, also provided us with a list of recommendations which definitely enhanced our visit to the city. Our guide was easy to follow, well informed & engaging even to two exhausted 18 year olds! Would recommend to anyone, especially those who have just arrived in Vienna!
