Terrible tour operator

I do not recommend this tour operator. Money grabbing company. Do this tour on yourself and save money and have a better experience.

Worthwhile tour

The trip starts with a comfortable bus ride to the camp. During the 2 hour drive the guide provided information on the history and current affairs of the areas we drove by. It was very informative and gave plenty of time to be able to explore the places visited.

Powerful experience

Everyone should experience this tour. A reminder of the past so that this is never repeated in the future. Very moving tour.

Unforgettable

Unforgettable experience. Very professionally done. We rode for about two hours in a Mercedes sprinter van w iPads on the seat backs so you can watch a documentary on Malthausen. Our guide Robert was great. He shared much about Austria and the camp specifically on the ride. When you get there he will get you set up with their audio tour. The food in the bistro at the site is awful. I recommend you wait to eat lunch on the way back.

Excellent tour of Concentration Camp

The Mauthausen tour guide was awesome! Excellent, straightforward description of concentration camp and international monuments honoring the dead. Lunch was expensive.

Grim but important history lesson

This tour was to a Nazi concentration camp and I appreciated that the guide was serious and honest about what went on there. The bulk of the tour was an audio tour - the guide only talked on the bus to and from Vienna to the site. The audio guide was very good and the experience was strong and emotional, as it should be. I recommend it to anyone for this episode in history should never be forgotten.

Respectfully solemn and well done

My small group tour was mixed with German, Spanish and English speakers and our driver/guide Joseph did a great job with the group. He gave us a lot of background and history on the van ride over and everything was well timed on the transport and lunch afterwards. The tour of Mauthausen itself felt a little rushed by the local English speaking guide. The guided tour was 2 hours and I wish it would have been 3 hours guided. The last hour we were brought back to the meeting point and I elected to go back into the museum to absorb more information on my own - it wasn't clear that we could do this, but I recalled the timing of when we were departing. Mauthausen itself is heavy and intense to go to. The museum and information is thoughtfully done and I certainly felt the gravity of being there. I learned every Austrian 8th grader must go as part of their history education. I recommend this tour for those who want to take a day out of sightseeing in Vienna to see a darker part of history (learning so it never happens again).

Historical must-do

We really enjoyed this trip. The tour and museum are really well done. Loved that the group sizes are on the small side so it’s not overwhelming. Our guide took care of the transportation, our audio guides, and stopped for lunch on our way back. We really didn’t have to worry about a thing. Highly recommend.

Amazing tour

This was one of the most interesting tours I’ve ever gone on. I learned so much more about this dark horrible tragedy. Josef was an excellent tour guide, very friendly, and we stopped and had dinner at a very nice restaurant. The food was good as well.

Very good experience overall

This was a very worthwhile experience, and the guide was good and managed things well in addition to providing additional information about the tour and the area. The time was sufficient to take things in without feeling rushed.

Important tour.

It’s an important tour. I’m so glad I did it. Our driver was excellent. The drive was nice.He was informative and helpful. We had enough time to walk through at our own pace with the use of the audio guide. Highly recommended.

Never Forget

Nice drive with friendly driver/guide (Robert). The camp itself is obviously rather intense and depressing given what occurred there but is also a must see. Never forget!

Trip to Mauthausen

Would have been 5 but my original booking with Viator for Sunday was cancelled and I was charged £50 more for yesterday- the trip itself was excellent- driver Robert(I think) was knowledgeable and informative and the pre- agreed timings to see the memorial was spot on - I was only disappointed that the steps of death were closed

Lost for words.

Our guides all did an amazing job of explaining the tragic loss of human life during ww2 in this terrible concentration camp.

Highly recommended

I have done some history 101 reading on these horrible events, and this tour was significantly more astonishing.. I didn’t think I could hear any more aweful things about concentration camps but I was wrong. How on earth can I still get shocked over hearing about the cruelty that took place? Yet, I still was. It is so sad but meaningful and it really illustrates why all countries need to recognize every part of their history, no matter how ugly. We can never forget. I recommend anybody who has an opportunity to do, does. I purposely did not add photos because you really need to see for yourself.

A look at man's inhumanity to man

Very informative tour. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and detailed in his explanation and insights into this somber place. I was surprised at how well preserved and intact a lot of the camp was. If you visit in the fall or winter check the weather and dress warm. This place is atop a hill and if the wind blows it can get cold, you are outside for a good portion of the tour.

Moving and lasting experience

Tour was very well organized and incredibly informative. Guide through the camp was sensitive to the subject matter while thought provoking and educational. Everyone should remember and expose themselves to this part of history.

Eye opening experience to a story that is not well known compared to the likes of Aushwitz.

The entire day was spectacular and well planned out. I would recommend 10/10! Our driver was knowledgeable and made the 2-hour drive go quite fast.

Emotional trip.

It was a very emotional tour. We went down to the quarry and viewed the steps after the tour. Our driver and tour guide were very knowledgeable. It was a great experience.

Although sad, it was great to learn the history! The tour guide on the bus and the tour guide at the camp were both very knowledgeable. Love that they showed a background video on the bus as well

This was a very good tour. Everyone should see this. The tour guide did an excellent job, the driver was great and the place they stopped at for lunch served excellent food.

Awesome history lesson of WW2 concentration camp.

Amazing day trip from Vienna. Audio guide included. Beautiful memorial sculpture garden. Excellent history lesson. Good meal after the tour in the way home. Catch a glimpse of Austrian Alps.

Mauthausen.

This is about two hours from Cesky krumlov by bus from cesky krumlov station. Well worth a visit while you are in the area. It is Totally Free of charge. I found it a very peaceful place Despite the horrific historic past. Be prepared to walk up a steep hill before you go to their by bus.

Top-notch guide

The Mauthausen guide was incredibly knowledgeable and well organized. We've all heard stories about such places, but seeing the reality is very sobering -- and inspiring to do everything we can to avoid such horrors in the present and future.

Experience Mauthausen

Excellent audio-guided tour offered in several languages and easy to do. For history enthusiasts, Mauthausen is a great place to visit, albeit sad. The trip is a bit long, about two hours, give or take, as the camp is located out of town. There's a restroom stop and upon return, a stop for lunch at a great restaurant (lunch not included). The pick up and drop-off location is centrally located and easy to get to.

Never forget this horrible part of the past!

This was my 4th time visiting Europe from the US. On a previous trip a visit to Dachau was scheduled - but unfortunately on a Monday, when it was closed at that time. While not included in the Viking Cruise we were on, it was suggested that I contact Viator and I'm pleased that I did that. While extremely sobering, being there it brought to life the many things I had read about concentration camps and clearly showed the terrible conditions that must have existed. While the monuments gave the camp a breath of fresh air, looking down into the quarries gave me chills. I do not recall our guide's name, but we were on the "Mauthausen Camp Day Trip from Vienna" on September 12th, leaving Vienna at 8:30AM.

Mauthausen Concentration Camp

My wife and I enjoyed our day trip to Mauthausen. We learned so much, it was eye opening to see the evils that have taken place in this world. It was a smaller group than we thought, there was a total of 8 of us. Joseph was our driver and gave us a lot of information about Austria. We stopped for lunch on the way back at an Austrian restaurant which was good! If you’re in Vienna and want to tour a concentration camp, we definitely recommend this one.

History that should never be repeated

Mauthausen tour

Our bus tour guide provided us with Mauthausen information as well as he was very informative of sights to see along our way to and from Mauthausen. Smooth bus ride and a great stoping point for lunch. We had a English speaking guide at the Mauthausen camp. Most knowledgeable and very very passionate about her work and presentation of the events that took place at the camp. A most memorable experience.

This was a very enlightening tour that puts a visual to the stories we have only heard about. The guides were very knowledgeable.

A Somber but Essential Site

The Mauthausen visit was excellent in every respect. On transportation, the small bus provided for a group of about 12 was quite comfortable and would have been so even if full. On guides: first, the tour leader as such was most helpful and most informative; second, the camp guide was perfect, a local person with most helpful material and reflections. On the visit, a full three hours, two hours of guided walking and one hour for individual wandering. The site is decidedly worth a visit for anyone interested in this historical period. I liked the many memorial monuments erected by nations with citizens confined to this camp. Afterwards, on the way back, there is a stop for lunch, not included in the price, at a very pleasant restaurant. An experience that I would highly recommend.

Such a past imposes a challenging future for universal human equality.

It is a memorable and indispensable visit so that we can express our solidarity with those persecuted and murdered by Nazism, to prevent anything similar from happening again and to value the fight for full freedom and human equality.

Informative and Emotional

Excellent narration on the trip there and back, the English tour guide at Mauthausen was very informative and did an great job.

History as it is.

This was fascinating trip from start to finish, the guide explained not only about Mauthausen, but Austria in general. Very good, highly recommend.

Great, great tour.

If traveling to visit a concentration camp is something you are interested in while visiting Vienna, this is the tour for you. Our tour guide Rue was both friendly and very knowledgeable. The accommodations on the small tour bus for the approx 2 hour bus ride each way were very good. When we got to the camp we were met and led around by our camp guide Wolfgang, who was also was an amazing and very knowledgeable guide. Both Rue and Wolfgang spoke very good English. The restaurant we stopped at for lunch after visiting the camp and rock quarry was very delicious, with a wide variety of foods to pick from (great salad bar!) We promptly left at 8:30 in the morning from Vienna and arrived back at the spot where we originally met at 5:30pm. I would highly, highly recommend this tour if this is a subject you are interested in.

Worth the visit to...

Worth the visit to confront this terrible piece of history. The tour guide at Mauthausen was very knowledgeable and did a perfect job explaining the stakes and why Austria hasn’t done the greatest job dealing with its history. Our bus driver and guide there were nice and knowledgeable as well. The bus there was also very comfortable

Very thought provoking day

The tour was a small group and traveled in a van with a very capable guide/driver. It’s about an hour and a half from Vienna so very doable in a day. The camp itself offered an eye opening opportunity to learn about man’s inhumanity to man. I’ve visited Dachau outside of Munich and thought I already knew a lot about the Nazi concentration camps so I was surprised when I learned even more. The area where the camp is located is so beautiful and calm, it provides a sharp contrast to the horrific existence behind the walls and in the quarry down below. Good reminder of “Never Again” during our own troubled times.

Good tour

What an impactful tour. The tour guide was great - pointed out things as we drove through Vienna and gave us relevant historical stories to accompany either our location or the period in history. The camp itself is sobering and broke my heart to think of the pure evil that took place here. Highly recommend visiting and remembering what humans are capable of doing to each other - and refusing to let it happen again.

An informative, eye opening day trip to Mauthausen Concentration Camp

I took students to visit this camp as part of an immigration politics class I am teaching. The tour guide was friendly and informative. The drive to Mauthausen was enjoyable since we were able to view parts of the Vienna woods and the countryside. The video on the ride to the museum was eye opening. Once we arrived to the camp, we enjoyed having the opportunity to visit the key places on our own led by an audio guide. The stop for lunch and the drive back were enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour!

Concentration camp

Wonderful tour guide. Bus driver was great also. Needed to make a few more bathroom stops than they were planning. But they were great about it. The concentration camp was sad and informational. Glad we did it.

Fantastic Experience with Ulrich!

Being history buffs this tour was something we just had to do. One of the darkest moments in history if not the most and we visited the actual site of the concentration camp. On the way Ulrich showed us the main city sights as we crossed Vienna and kept us entertained and informed through out. Mauthausen itself has a dark grim energy and you definitely come out a different person, and the historical accuracy and some of the items that remained just give you the clearest pictures possible of the holocaust. Ulrich asked us to watch a short documentary on the way there so that we were better informed and this truly helped us understand the place better and gave context. Highly recommend!

A must to see.

Excellent experience if you've visited Dachau, Auschwitz, Birkenau, Terasianstadt then a visit to Mauthausen is a must. The Cafe Restaurant is also excellent. Try the goulash soup mit semmel. Best around you'll get.

Must do tour

Excellent tour. Guide on bus was excellent. Self guided tour at Mauthausen was also excellent. Only fault was the stop for lunch. Place was well below average. Better of just going back to Vienna and not waste 45 minutes.

Really just an informative taxi ride

The trip to and from Mauthausen was comfortable safe and informative about Vienna and countryside. We had plenty of time at Mauthausen I felt the tour could have offered more. For example we could have visited the quarry and the steps of death so important to the whole dreadful story. Mauthausen itself was moving and informative although I did wonder if the role of Austria was downplayed.
