This ghost tour was really interesting and fun. Shawn is really passionate by his job and we can feel it through his stories. Now i know when to move to Seoul, how to not having my shoes stolen and how announce my venue at the restroom without disturbing ghosts 😆. Also the walking in Seoul by night was nice too.

Great tour for local color, won’t give you nightmares to talk home (but maybe a gaek gwi)

It’s tough to get the right ambience in such a bustling, modern city but this great walking tour does it. Our guide Shawn is very knowledgeable in Korean folklore and is a strong story teller. This tour is less about creepy scares than it is about keeping local culture and history alive, and at that it’s a big success

A great guide, city & tour!

We really enjoyed this tour, walking around the city at night with a really fun and knowledgeable guide was a fantastic way to learn about Seoul. We learnt lots of cool history old and new. He told just couple of really chilling ghost stories but we would have liked a few more! Definitely recommend this tour 👻🇰🇷

Not your usual tour.

Great evening spent wandering through seoul listening to our guide Shawn explain the cultural locations and the otherworldly ties Koreans have with the city. It was a fascinating experience learning how the superstitions and reverence Korean culture has for ghosts and spirits applies to daily life. Aside from the ghostly subject matter there is also a some great information on local customs and lifestyle and the buildings and monuments we walked past. I would highly recommend it.

A very dark and interesting tour around Seoul....

This was a really interesting way to learn about the history of Seoul. Joe does a great job with weaving history with folklore. There are two different tours that his company does, so I'll have to make sure to try the other one next time. Well worth the booking!

A unique way to learn about some Korean history and visit some sites.

Great experience, one of the highlights of my trip to Korea. And it wouldn't have been as fun and interesting without a great guide like Joe. I would absolutely do it again.

Spent a great night following Shawn around learning about Korean ghosts. I really enjoyed it and paid a bit extra to get the extended tour which was amazing. Totally worth it If you like ghost tours and enjoy a walk I highly recommend going on this tour. I enjoyed myself and definitely one story gave me the heebie-jeebies

Visit the darker side of Seoul

This walk has something for everyone! Scary ghost stories? Check! Superstition and folklore? Check, check! Modern urban legends? You bet! Accompanying Shawn through the dark Palace grounds with the neon lit Seoul city scape in the background is nothing short of magical! Recommended for anyone who wants to learn more about Korean folklore!

So worth it

I wish we had taken this tour towards the beginning of our stay. We saw so many cool places! We'd love to come back and explore all of them in the daytime.

Seoul between Folklore and modernity

It was a fantastic journey between folklore and modernity. The guide took us to corners of Seoul that have their own atmosphere at night. The short and long stories about the world of spirits and the supernatural were not HuiBu Ghostbusters stuff, but rather how belief and folklore have been preserved up to the present day and still have an influence on people. Highly recommended!

No ghosts seen but ...

Not at all scary but very interesting/fascinating history! Joe is so knowledgeable and a very engaging host. The best part was seeing parts of lively back alleyways and quiet historical neighborhoods the average tourist wouldn't know about on their own. Highly recommend!

Recommend this tour.

I stumbled upon this tour thanks to the Dark Side of Seoul podcast. Shawn's storytelling skills are excellent. It was informative and fun. He answered questions in detail while walking between the locations. Discovered some new spots around Seoul and met some nice people.

Korean ghost story’s hit different!

Really enjoyed this tour. The guide Shawn was so interesting and funny, keeping the group engaged the whole way through. I would definitely do this tour again if I ever come to Seoul. I did the tour with my two siblings and we don’t agree on things often but all decided this was one of our favourite activities of our trip!

Shawn was an amazing guide.His storytelling an extensive knowledge on the subject had us on the edge of our focus.We wish we could stay longer for the extended trip, but we had to head back.Looking forward to more trips.

Dark side of Seoul walking tour.

Shawn was great fun, a brilliant storyteller and obviously in love with the subject. We had an absolute blast and were so glad we booked the extended tour.

Excellent walking tours!

We did both tours (Folklore with Shawn, History with Joe) and loved both. Although I get scared easily, the tours were at the right level - some stories were spooky and I was checking every room's dark corner, but I didn't have nightmares afterwards! It was great to understand some of Seoul's history and culture through the ghost stories. The comics are also pretty good, a nice memento from the trip. The guides have very different styles but were both great and had also very good food recommendations for after the tour.

Highly recommendable tour for anyone who is interested in ghost stories and Korean folklore. Shawn is great at telling stories and funny. We got to see parts of Seoul that we otherwise would not have seen.

Fun and Engaging Ghost Walk

Shawn was en excellent story teller and I learned a lot about Korean folklore, culture and history as we traversed grounds around the Gyeongbokgung Palace. He answered several questions from the group and was very engaging with everyone. You can tell that he has a passion for Korean culture, particularly tied to traditions relating to the spirit world and enjoys sharing that with an audience. I'd highly recommend taking this walk if you have a night to spare in Seoul.

Great stories + great way to see the city. Extended is worth it.

The tour was great! Joe was knowledgeable, witty, and a great storyteller. There were lots of ghost stories and "dark history" tidbits that you don't typically hear about. We found it so interesting! It's also a great way to see the city and "historic" areas that aren't on the usual tourist maps. We did the extended tour which was totally worth it. The last stop on the tour gave me the chills! (I won't share the location so I don't ruin the surprise for future ghost tourists). :) I definitely recommend this tour.

Stay Spooky

Joe does an amazing job explaing the history and allure of Korea. I felt like this was not only great for spooky haunts, but also for getting to know Seoul. Highly recommend!

Shawn was a brilliant guide. This was the first thing we did in Seoul (after some tasty noodles) and it really helped us gain insight to Korean culture which helped us throughout the rest of our trip. He does offer an extended tour which would definitely be worth it for most people, but we had just landed and were really tired. That’s the only reason we didn’t

Shawn is such a fantastic storyteller and historian, and his perspective was invaluable for us to better understand many fascinating elements of Korean culture. We love doing ghost tours in new cities, so we thought this would be a fun way to start our stay in South Korea. Shawn is a very knowledgeable and witty tour guide. I'm not one for boring "take this picture and also that one" tours, so both the theme and personal touch were very much appreciated and turned this evening into a weird spooky cultural experience that I'd be glad to recommend. Go for it, it really is worth doing! (And don't hesitate to ask as much questions as you like, Shawn has little tidbits about almost every foreign country's presence/influence in Seoul throughout the last century)

Best ghost tour ever

Shawn is an excellent guide. He is very engaging and kept us intrigued by all the dark takes about Seoul. Her has excellent knowledge of the history and folk lores of Korea. We were very captivated by his stories and he brought us through the dark alleys and abandoned palace grounds, right in the heart of Seoul. We would never have visited all the places if not for Shawn. Highly recommend this tour if you want to know more about the imjeong, the process where the dying takes his last breath in the presence of his loved ones and how the Dog-man still roams the streets of Dongdaemun!

Fantastic Experience

Shawn was a fantastic guide. The tour was interesting and very educational. I learnt a lot about the folklore and culture of Seoul through the many spooky stories that were shared. Highly recommended!

Dark history and folklore, with a few ghosts thrown in

I took Joe’s tour in June 2022 and Shawn’s in December 2023. Both offer their own unique experiences, not just because they follow different routes but because the two guides each have their own style. I’d rate both tours five stars. I asked my Korean fiancée, who accompanied me on both tours, what rating she’d give. Her response was four for Joe’s tour, and three for Shawn’s. I really enjoyed how both Joe and Shawn have a lot of knowledge and passion for Korea. Joe’s tour has more of a focus on Korea’s dark history, while Shawn’s is more focused on folklore and how it affected/affects the lives of ordinary Koreans. Both Joe and Shawn send a follow-up email after the tour with useful information, which I really appreciated! My fiancée, being Korean, knew much of the content of the tours from growing up here. She felt that the stories from Joe’s tour were really enhanced, and much scarier, by being told where they actually happened. She didn’t get that experience from Shawn’s tour. She felt that Joe really tried to make the experience special, but she did commend Shawn for taking extra time to make sure everyone knew where they were going at the end of the tour. Perhaps not being Korean allowed me to better appreciate The Dark Side of Seoul. At any rate, I highly recommend both tours if you’re in town!

What a night!

Shawn was a good guide. We chose a very cold night so we had to cut it short. We enjoyed the time sharing the stories with him. We were too cold to feel the ghosts but we had the warm of our guide. Thanks Shawn - keep the nights rolling.!!!!!
