We really enjoyed visiting the castle. Beautiful setting, well maintained and combined a view on household/ fort life. Very interesting history. We spent 2 hour, and it was barely enough time to go through. We definitely recommend this site.

Fabulous castle

Amazing castle ! Did not have enough time to see it all despite 4 hours set aside. The size of it is enormous and the history is amazing. Such a fabulous location as well. Highly recommended to not stop here when in the area.

Kind of hard to follow the tour. No commentary for every number in the walls. Castle is interesting but basically empty since built so long ago Beautiful views from the castle

We Loved It

Fascinating place. We didn't use the audio guide because there was lots of information to read on information boards in each area. Information was given in French German and English. We spent about 5 hours because we read almost everything. They also had multilingual videos with headphones in some of the rooms. We had a money off voucher given to us by our hotel so it was extremely good value. We came out for a lovely lunch in the café opposite and were allowed back in to finish our visit.

Special place, amazing castle

This is a beautiful castle in a unique location. I particularly enjoyed the Leah Linh exhibition within the castle, her art helped bring the story of the castle to life.

A must-see

We had a delightful time at Chillon Castle even though it was drizzling the day we went. My husband and I along with our 16 year old son took a self-guided tour (with the audio tour---not absolutely necessary, but it did offer a few tidbits of info). The castle is stunning and well marked with stories and information (in English, French and German). We spent about 2 hours and then a little more taking family pictures outside by the lake. We're so glad we had then chance to see this impressive piece of history.

Nice but you need imagination

The castle is huge and beautiful. The brochures are available in multiple languages. The information is ok, but focused on years and dates, not always that interesting. I think they can do a bit more to stimulate the imagination of kids. The spaces are mainly empty, only a bedroom and dining room were decorated. The treasure room or prison for example were just empty spaces. I also think it's fun to see for kids how people were dressed. Adults can imagine how life in this castle could have been, kids not.

This is one of the best self-guided tours we have ever experienced. The audio headset vividly narrated all of the historical episodes in the various "lives" of this castle over the years/centuries. And speaking of the audio, make sure you show your receipt indicating you have paid for audio (as the young lady at the entry demanded we show just that as she said our Viator Ticket showing the audio was not sufficient). There are benches to sit all along the way of the roughly 90-minute walking journey through the castle's chamber and hidden enclaves. Well worth the time and money!

Not a must if you are in Lausanne for just one day.

A rather interesting castle, well organized exhibits, good supporting info provided. Great views. Enjoyable. Educational. The layout is confusing a bit due to the fact that the castle was rebuilt and repurposed many times throughout its history. However, you can use it to your advantage if you find yourself surrounded by screaming kids or overzealous tourists: just change your route!

We truly enjoyed our visit. If you want a self guided recorded tour make sure to get headsets in gift shop. We didn’t know this was an option.

good castle

Located close to one of the most picturesque lakes in the area, with a view of the Alps. A historic castle that may be explored in a variety of different ways, including a portion that is located beneath. During the warmer months, this location sees a lot of foot traffic. If you want a good view, you have to climb all the way to the top.

Wonderful castle on Lake Geneva

Located on the Lake Geneva, Chillon Castle is a perfect example of medieval life in old Savoy, part of modern Switzerland.

Must see in Montreux!

The castle is a really cool experience. The audio guide you can buy is very informative and keeps you moving around the castle so you can see the most possible.

This was a great detour from Montreux. So satisfying. Great audio tour. Much better than anticipated. Very well done.

One to Remember

This is one of the best historical castles we have seen (and we have seen many on our travels). The restorations have allowed the Chateau’s history to be evident. Every ceiling is impressive and the walls down to the floors interesting but the views…sensational. This is a castle for the whole family. A cafe with lovely well priced meals and a swimming beach both next to the Château. Free parking for 3hrs very close with a blue cardboard timing disc (yes they check) or catch public transport, even a boat.

That was a cool little self guided tour. Castle is larger than you might expect with some excellent views of the Lake. Great history and easy to get to by bus. If you have a couple of hours, it's well worth it.

Beautifully located castle--I suggest you arrive by ferry from Montreux for the best view, then walk back to Montreux on the promenade for different views

Recommended excursion in Montreux

I purchased tickets to visit Chillon Castle through Viator. With the tickets in hand, we avoided the ticket window and went straight in. We used the printed guide provided by the castle staff to follow the recommended route and found it thorough and very interesting. We very much enjoyed the experience. As an aside, it was very hot and sunny the day we visited and walking from downtown Montreux did not seem reasonable. Instead, we took a train from downtown to the Veytaux-Chillon stop (about two minutes ride). I also heard the staff at the castle recommend a local bus route that stops next to the castle entrance.

A solid choice for European history

Took a train to Montreux from Geneva (1 hour) then the boat to the castle. It was a easy journey. We bought our tickets online but still had to stand in the same line as people buying tickets. We opted not to buy the audio guide as I get overwhelmed with all the information., however if you really want to learn about the castle I probably would recommend it because while there are information signs they are not that great. It just depends on how much you want. It is a lot of uneven walking and many many stairs. I loved the visit we stayed just under 2 hours. We then took the bus across the street back to the train to go home. I say go early as crowds were long by 1pm and it was getting hot since it is summer. My tip don’t buy the wine. The white tasted cheap and the red was just ok.. they lacked depth of good European wine or.. maybe I’m just used to amazing French wines (haha)

Beautiful Castle and an Excellent Tour

A wonderful day out. I can not recommend this highly enough. The tour is a treat for history-lovers; the castle is well-preserved, full of interesting features, and the tour is well-curated (especially with the excellent audio-guide). The chateau's historical beauty is further offset by the lake and mountains that surround it - quite stunning.

Château de Chillon - breathtaking

We drove from Lausanne which took about 45 mins. Parking was a bit tight but we got a space. Arrived about 2.5 hours before closing time and it was still busy. Very efficient and well positioned cafe 10 seconds walk from the chateaus entrance and a restaurant on the main road too. The chateau offers audio guides which we chose not to pay more money for but the free leaflet was sufficient along with additional information in the rooms. Quite a bit of climbing if you do the whole visit: highly recommended if you can! About five flights to stairs high I think. Views over the lake are more than amazing! This is Switzerland!

Could not reach Viator from overseas

We tried and tried to reschedule the moment we knew our train would not bring us on time, but it was difficult to reach Viator while overseas (we are from Canada). I tried calling, I tried emailing but the message never got through. Luckily, when we got to the castle, I explained the situation and showed them our proof of payment and they let us in. We did not get the guided tour however. The castle is beautiful, my husband absolutely loved it!

Well-preserved medieval castle with stunning lakeside views

As my title suggests, this is a well-preserved medieval castle with stunning views of Lake Geneva and the surrounding area. I arrived shortly after opening time at 9am and would advise other visitors to do the same if possible as while I was able to view the castle without it being too busy, large coachloads of other tourists had got there by the time I was done. I would also highly recommend getting the audio guide in your chosen language as that tells you lots of interesting information about the castle's history on a room-by-room basis for a small additional cost.

So pretty. What a beautiful castle. Visiting it brings you back in time almost. It is a definite must.

Historical castle on the lake

Well preserved castle along the lake with interesting history. Our friendly tour guide provided historical information of the buildings and its colorful past of residents. It even has historical dungeon inhabitants whom are acknowledged. Great place to go from the outside grounds, and from top to bottom into each room to see it all. You will need a few hours to do it all.

Positively medieval!!!

Must see!! The town of Montreux makes movement in the city so easy! This was one of the best castles we’ve seen in Europe because they have left it in its original conditions. Fantastic views of the lake from here as well:)

Chillon Castle was simply beyond spectacular. A leisurely, self-guided exploration allowed for the best opportunity to immerse ourselves in the history and subtleties of this stunning medieval fortress. The detailed brochure provided upon entering was more than sufficient to serve as our "tour guide" for the castle. Built on its own tiny island, it has purportedly been the most visited historical monument in Switzerland. A 360-degree panorama of the castle and surrounds can be enjoyed by climbing four floors to the top of the Keep. Along the way, stop on the second and third floors to view the collections of antique weapons. Whether you plan to explore the castle with a tour guide, an audio guide or just be self-guided, be aware that there are some narrow corridors, multiple levels and stairways. This magnificent historically-significant structure is virtually 1000 years old, so clearly it could not have been ADA, Equality Act or European Accessibility Act compliant when constructed. Please do not plan to visit the interior of Chillon Castle just to be disappointed that there are no elevators, moving walkways, etc. in this "medieval" building.

Great Medieval Castle

Loved seeing this great castle on the shores of like Geneva. Absolutely worth stopping by and checking out if in the area on vacation.

Easy to do , go on your pace , purchase the audio

Well worth it to do the audio experience , you get so much more and you find things you would not find on your own . You take as much time as you want , enjoy or go quickly its your own pace , very interesting . Nice cafe on site , good food and drinks

Well worth a visit.

Not expensive to get in - 8 Swiss Francs per adult, and the place will keep you occupied for a good couple of hours. Lots to see and lots of history. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. We arrived by ferry, but you can easily walk, bus or train it. If you have one of the local bus passes, you can get 15% off entry too.

Allow at least two hours

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this castle. We found the self-guided walk through the castle complex extremely interesting and we spent over two hours exploring. The tour took us from the cellars and prisons at water level up to the living quarters and then up to the battlements and finally to the top of the tower.

An Absolute Dream Come True

I bought an artist hand drawing a few years ago. The drawing pictured translated me to a different world. When I asked my husband if he could possibly read the bottom of the drawing, he said Chillon Castle. He proceeded to said, ahh it is a castle in Switzerland! Oh my word! It actually existed! Of course I had to personally come to see this real castle. I didn’t disappoint. 💖🫶🏻💖

Worth a look

Magical, Disney style castle. Well worth a visit. We went in December and it was not busy at all. Cold though! Walkable from Montreux but excellent public transport if you don't fancy it. Make sure you get the travel pass from your hotel, as this entitles you to 50% off the entrance price. The only thing to bear in mind here is that there are lots and lots of steps and narrow passages. If you are not particularly mobile, then this is not for you.

Seeing the happy children on the donkey and the pottery. The castle history was quite informative. Easily accessible. Public transportation at the door.

Beautiful castle

This is a truly beautiful castle, both inside and outside. There is lots to see, from the keep high up to the crypts down below. Various rooms give an idea of what life must have been like in the castle, including the unusual medieval toilets dropping into the lake. It's well worth the entrance fee - exploring the castle is an adventure in itself.

Good

Great little castle. It has plenty of nooks and crannies to get to. Lots of photo opportunities. When you compare it to other European castles, it is right up there but there are plenty that at better. Easy access using the 201 bus.

Worth a tour

This is a great place to visit. We were there for 2 hours. You get to explore so much of the castle compared to many others of these we've been to. There were demonstrations of cooking and wine tasting and the people were happy to answer questions and truly seemed to enjoy being there. The scenery all around is gorgeous.

Beautiful and Educational Aristocratic Castle

After touring the fort across the street I visited the châteaux. A lot of the beauty can be seen for free, simply walking around the exterior and down by the lake. However, the educational information posted on placards throughout the interior was quite interesting. From the wine cellar to the prisoners cell, it was full of surprises. Apparently it’s a terrific backdrop for photos —-a gorgeous bride and groom were getting photos made throughout the property when I visited. Many blessings, newlyweds! Entry fee is reasonable and half off with the tourist Riviera card.

Best castle ever. Been to dozens.

My husband and I have visited castles all over the world. We have been to dozens and dozens. By far this was the best laid out and explained of any we have ever been to. In three separate languages. It was so easy to get around and they made it so informative without it being overly informative. If you have children, this is a must. Make sure you take them down to the prison. Show them the place where they hung people. Show them the “latrines”. And make sure you make it all the way to the top for an amazing view. This is a highlight of Switzerland. Not just the region.

Great historical experience

Very interesting visit with lots of history and facts.Lovely position and great views.The guide information was very informative and easy to understand.Allow at least 2 hours for the visit. One warning if you have driven there make sure you have sorted out the parking as it requires a disk in the car window and failure to display this will cost 40CHF!

Brilliantly preserved castle with good information

This castle has been very well preserved and has a very informative audio guide. You can get a good discount on the entry ticket here with the Montreux tourist card but the audio guide costs extra, but is worth it. If you do not want to pay for the audio guide there are very good information boards, interactive points and some audio stands throughout the route through the castle that play some of the same videos. This was a very interesting insight to the historical transfer of power in the region. Highly recommended.

Castle in a wonderful setting

More a castle than a true chateau. Plenty to see. It is possible to get a little lost in it if you do not follow the numbered route. There are some information panels but the audio guide tells you more and helps you with navigation. An (inexpensive) bus to Chateau de Chillon runs from the waterfront road in Montruex. You can pay by card onboard. An onboard screen updates you on the route but you may need to ask about which of two stops is closest to the Chateau. A treat is to arrive or leave the Chateau by paddle boat. The 10 minute trip is about 10 SFr each way. It sets off from near the station’s lift/stairs nb this boat sometimes serves additional places so be sure you are going to the right place.

The castle is well-preserved and restored appropriate to its history. The directional arrows and signs provided great guidance for visitors and promotes efficient traffic.

History at it's finest.

This is absolutely stunning! What a beautiful piece of history. And there is a lot of historian this place. The guide booklet was well laid out and the information in it was good. I would recommend you get one (free with your entry ticket) and follow the tour it outlines. There are plenty of things to see and many photo opportunities too. Everywhere you look there is something of interest. Worth the walk from Montreux.
