Absolutely a must see if your visiting Melbourne. The building itself has been beautifully renovated and transformed. Very informative and an important part of our history explained through various media outlets. Stunning views of Melbourne City & surrounding gardens. Definitely my no. 1

Shrine of Remembrance

Very complete gathering of objects and information on Australia's war time involvements. We spent a couple of hours there and could have stayed longer. Good views from the top story although the stairs to get there are somehow difficult to find. It appears you can small group tours to take you around, and whilst we didnt take that option we found them quite loud and disruptive in the silence of the museum.

Loved this visit to the Shrine. Would highly recommend taking the guided tour. Our guide was very informative and we learnt lots about the Shrines history that we might otherwise have missed.

Informative moving tour

Highly recommend this tour. It was interesting, moving & very informative. Having said that a reasonable amount of fitness is required to manage the stairs to climb to the top of the shrine. Well worth it though as the view is amazing from each side of the shrine.

Beautiful building with wonderful views and moving tributes

I booked 2 tickets online for a group tour but surprisingly enough, my husband and I discovered we were the only participants on the tour so we were treated to a private tour. Our tour guide was named Dominic and he was very informative about the military history of Australia. Since this was the first day of our first trip to Australia, Dominic also gave us a lot of information about the city of Melbourne in general. It was interesting to learn about the history of the shrine and the significance of Anzac Day for all Australians. I think this shrine is very meaningful and a wonderful tribute to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. We also saw fabulous views of the city from the top level. I highly recommend a visit to this Shrine for anyone visiting Melbourne.

Moving experience at the Shrine of Remembrance

This should be on everyone's itinerary when visiting Melbourne. Very informative guide who could answer any questions we had. We had no idea on the history of the building and the true signifiance on the Victorian people

A very informative and excellent tour

the tour is highly recommended. you will learn a lot about the history of the shrine, the people and the wars. we had a couple of locals in our tour group and even they were surprised at some of the facts because they didnt know about them before the tour

Superb guide tour

We booked the 10 o’clock tour as the 11 wasn’t on the website. After talking to Peter on arrival he happily swapped us to the 11 o’clock tour as that offered the light in the shrine. We used the additional tour to explore the excellent museum and the crypt. The museums was much more accessible than The Australian War Memorial in Canberra. Peter’s tour was excellent. His explanations and knowledge gave a great insight into the Shrine. Being in the actually shrine when the “light” hit the spot, the honour guard and the RAAF flautist make the visit both memorable and moving.

A must see!

Highly recommend. Very interesting and the free guides are super knowledgeable. The views are terrific too and are just an extra benefit!

Worth the tour!

Had a wonderful experience at the Shrine of Remembrance tour. Our guide Karl was very knowledgeable, kind and took us inside and around the shrine. This is probably best way to explore this iconic Melbourne landmark. I'm glad I took the tour and I'm filled with gratitude for all the sacrifices of the Australian men and women.

The beauty of personal sacrifice

Being reminded how the bravery and heroism of many including my grandfather has given us inspiration to give freely for others freedom. This Shrine memorial continues to inspire many people in a good way.

A Shrine to remember

Finding my grandfather’s name amongst the 89,100 WW1 Australian soldiers enlisted. Very special being there with my 11 year old grandson when the last time I’d been on a tour was with my grandmother in the 1950s.

Fascinating tour of The Shrine. Our guide Karl was great. Would recommend doing this tour and then spend time wandering around looking at the exhibits.

A must visit in Melbourne

In my opinion the most underrated landmark in Melbourne. Should be talked about and visited throughout the year, not just ANZAC Day. Came and did the VIP Guided tour (walk in customer) for $20, but there is a free daily tour. However I thought it was well worth the price and you get a more detailed and less crowded experience. Tour went for 50 mins, there’s some climbing of stairs so keep that in mind. The views up top are breathtaking. The museum on the bottom floor is well curated, maintained and full of knowledge. Can easily spend 1/2 a day here.

A tour to remember.

It was a splendid tour and more so because I paid for a guided tour which was an excellent decision taken by me. I learnt a lot about the historical significance of the shrine and many many stories linked to it which would have been unknown to me had I not taken a guide.

Wonderful place to recall the men and women who have served

Beautiful grounds. Statues to remember the war dead, the families at home, peace keepers, and a little donkey and a medic who went above the call of duty and saved a lot of lives. Wonderful building. A great way to honor the folks who served their country in war and in peace. And even a boat from Gallipoli (the First World War 1916).

Impossible to miss

If you look south down Swanston Street, it is imposible to miss the Shrine. The Shrine is a striking monument, built in Cassical style, resembling the Parthenon in Athens. The Shrine honours those solders who have served Australia in war-time. Initially it was for those who fell in World War I, but it has since been extended to c ommemorate those who served in all conflicts, including peacekeeping. There is a lot to see, you can easily spend an hour here. The location in King's Domain, just off St Kilda Road, is easy to get to. The Shrine is the centre for ceremonies for ANZAC Day and Rememberance Day.

A place everone should visit at least once

Very interesting place to visit for foreigners especially European students who don't know much about Australian history. The guide was very precise and informative and we enjoyed the tour beside the amazing building which is one of a kind.

Speechless

Was left absolutely speechless after talking a walk around the grounds and through the museum inside, it's a passion of mine to visit places like this to pay respect for what those who came before sacrificed for us. I wish we had something of this scale in the UK to celebrate our heroes.

Shrine of Remembrance

The grounds cover the various wars participated in by military from Victoria, Australia. From the top steps, a nice view of the Melbourne skyline can be viewed. A ceremony was held inside the sanctuary building during the tour.

Remember those who died so we may live!

Australia was in it through nineteenth and twentieth centuries in various conflicts. Australians from Victoria and other places went to fight and died in battle. Through the First World War and the Second World War the Australian soldiers and navy and airmen fought alongside British, Indian and American forces against Nazi Germany and Japan. So much was lost in this great conflict. Korean wars also took a toll. This shrine is on their memory. A memorial service happens throughout the day till 4/30 pm. The balcony gives awesome views of the city. The Musuem is a wonderful treat. But you need time - at least half a day ! No charge. The gardens are peaceful and beckoning. Must go there while in Melbourne folks.

Excellent tour

We did a tour of the Shrine of Remembrance with Karl who was very informative, professional and respectful. He gave us a great understanding of the purpose and role of the Shrine, as well as the processes involved in creating it. The exhibitions, gardens and presentation of the Shrine are outstanding and most definitely worth a visit.

WW2 Roll Call Wall

We went on the tour and were amazed at how much information regarding this important building that we didn't know. We live in Victoria but this was our first visit inside the Shrine. Our guide Karl was very informative and respectful when explaining the history of the building. Views from the top are exceptional. In the gallery area is the WW2 exhibition and they have a rolling illuminated honor board for all the Victorians (39,000) that enlisted from Victoria for WW2. I was able to locate my father's name in the WW2 directory but to see it on the board I may have to wait months for it to roll around. We walk from Crown took 20 odd minutes, easy pace. Really recommend visiting the Shrine and if you have time take the tour

History with added amazing views

Took the guided tour which was so worthwhile. It's a great place to visit anyway but having things explained added a lot to the experience. The exhibits are very interesting (and moving) and the views from the top are amazing. Highly recommended!

Moving experience

The Shrine of Remembrance is a truly wonderful place. The building itself commands respect. There plenty of exhibits to see and there is lots of space where you can perhaps sit or rather stand and reflect. There is quite a lot to see and to read and it is an experience every Australian should not miss.

Go here, and be prepared to be moved

A tour of the Shrine of Remembrance is very moving, whether you are self-guided or go with a guide. The displays educate, but bring home the sacrifice of time, effort, love and life that our military personal have made. I'd like to think I would do the same for my own family. I guess it's extra moving for me, because my parents and parents-in-law were active in WW2, and my birth date was drawn out of the barrel for Vietnam. But I was at Uni, and the Vietnam war ended before I had to go -- so I still feel the 'what if'. I'm too old now to be sent or to volunteer, but I feel a great respect for those who have defended us, and I say 'thank you' here at the Shrine of Remembrance and when I see them at other times. The Shrine doesn't 'worship' war. It tells of the futility and sacrifice, and reminds us that we must do everything we can to prevent them. I recommend it to you and your family.

Excellent experience with a knowledgable, captivating guide.

Our experience at the Shrine of Remembrance was exceptional, from the contact we received from Janelle, Visitor Services Manager, regarding our booking, the welcome we received from Rebecca, Duty Manager, and the guided tour we experienced from Karl. Karl was extremely knowledgeable on Australian and Victorian war history and was able to provide information and insights on a very sombre topic in a respectful and entertaining manner. We would highly recommend the tour to anyone.

Tour is value for money. Some paid the ultimate price so you can live free.

We hadn't intended to go on the tour, but arrived by mistake, just ten minutes before the tour started, so made the call. We were fortunate that there were only four of us on the tour, so got that personal touch. The guide was knowledgeable, but also referred to the volunteer staff from the RSL if she needed help. The amount of time which went into the planning of such a memorial is amazing and reflected how grateful those remaining were at the time. Whilst you could see the exhibition without a tour, you would miss so much interesting information about planning,intent, meaning and in general understanding of the shrine. We were lucky that the tour went over time as it meant we didn't have time for all the exhibits and will have to go back again. This place does not glorify war, it's a place for reflection and thanks.

Must see

Your trip to Melbourne must include the shrine of remembrance. Beautifully built and a small entry fee of around $30. You can spend hours admiring the different artifacts. Great way to pay tribute to the veterans that fought for the freedom of this country

I booked an accessible tour of the shrine as one of our party is in a wheelchair and an other an elderly gent with mobility issues. Upon arrival I found we could have bought concession tickets more cheaply, and used a companion card (free). NONE OF THIS WAS OFFERED ON VIATOR. Even worse, the lovely staff at the shrine told us they don't have an accessible tour and VIATOR shouldn't be selling such tours! Fortunately the staff there were just amazing and customised our tour, which included other people, to accommodate our needs. The Shrine staff can't be faulted, but but VIATOR sucks big time

A Sombre Reminder

With General Sir John Monash driving the cause, the foundation stone was laid in November 1927.Not a reminder of conflict and war but a sombre reminder of the supreme sacrifce made by so many servicemen and women from Australia. The guides are very proud of their shrine and what it represents and very knowledgeable with respect to the history of the structure, the peole involved and the historiacal displays and ceremonies. The gardens are stunning and all the plantings have as much history as the sculptures and displays, being selected for their significance with respect to the numerous conflicts Australians have been involved in. It is free of charge to visit and do a guided tour (however, all donations to assist in maintaining this magnificent reminder are humbly welcome.

So much to take in at one visit.

Booked a guided tour of the Shrine as my husband and I have never been before. We were met by our very knowledgeable guide Karl and over the next 75 minutes was given a very informative tour of the Shrine. One of the highlights for me was the commemorative stone where we watched the ray of light move across while listening to the last post it was very moving. We will have to go back again to really spend time visiting the different displays, the tour gave us an excellent overall view of the Shrine we were so impressed and will spend more time when we return, book a tour first then spend some time in and around the Shrine.

Sobering Reminder of Sacrifice

We were on a cruise ship tour and stopped at a location where we could go one way across the street to view a beautiful botanical garden, or cross the street in the other direction to visit the Shrine of Rememberance. As it was the Australian day similar to the American Memorial Day, we went tot he Shrine to pay our respects. The Shrine is a beautiful "temple" with wonderful displays of the flags, uniforms, medals and other memoribilia of Australian military who fought and died in their wars. There is a famous poem about remembering the military dead and red knit poppies were arranged outside of the building reciting this poem. This monument was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth and gardens with poppys were in full bloom. This was a nice way to honor our allies by visiting the Shrine.

Great visit!

The sanctuary is a memorial in tribute to the soldiers who died for Australia, it is one of the monuments to visit in Melbourne, it is very pretty and well maintained, I recommend it, the visit is free.
