Mt Rigi Self-Guided Tour: Lake Lucerne Cruise and Mountain Spa

Great Trip

We boarded the ferry at Lucerne and travelled a few stops along the lake to Vitznau to take the cog wheel train up to Rigi Kulm. The scenery is spectacular and cannot be matched anywhere in the world. The scenery from the river of little towns surrounded by mountains is beautiful and we sat on one side of the ferry going and on the other coming back to make sure we didn’t miss anything. The cog wheel train plays some alpine music when nearing the summit which is cute. Again the views at the top are stunning. Snow and sunshine, majestic mountains. A trip not to be missed when in Lucerne.

A Beautiful, Memorable Experience

Despite overcast conditions, I had a lovely time hiking down from the top to the spa via a route that I devised from the free map, with great views around every bend, cows and goats ringing their bells all the while. And the spa was a wonderful, refreshing, rejuvenating complement to the hours on the trails. Great day in the Alps.

I called Viator at around...

I called Viator at around 10 a.m. to ask for help because I could't find my email to download the ticket inside the boat. They told me they would help me and call me back. And if I had to pay for the boat they would refund me. It's now 22h03 in the evening and all day I never received a call back. What a disgrace!!!

Amazing views, Relaxation, and fun transportation

Self-guided tour allowed us to go at our own pace, spend time at the top of Mt. Rigi and enjoy the amazing views. Kaltbad spa was the best mineral baths we have ever visited; we spent two hours relaxing in the waters. All of the transportation was on time and the transitions were easy to navigate. We ended the day with a cable car ride down to Weggis and a late lunch at the lake. Will recommend this tour to all our friends.

The itinerary was easy to follow and the trip was fantastic. Hiking trails were clearly marked and suitable for all ages. Best is ended the trip with a magnificent view at the mineral spa.

I loved the Mount Rigi -Rigi Klum. Very impressive!! And the trip in the boat was nice . It's was my first travel in Luzern ,Vitznau, Rigi Klum, Rigi kaltbad .

Fabulous day

This was an outstanding day. Everything was easy to figure out, plenty of time for each portion of the tour and a great mix of activities. The walk to the spa took a full hour but the snow was deep and we took our time. Beautiful scenery!!!

Mount Rigi Es ist gut!!

The ride up on the cogwheel railroad and then the hike down to the spa from the top of Mt. Rigi...just a word of caution...the hike downhill is difficult especially when you might have knee or hip problems...it takes about 60 minutes with no stops. Also, the cable car ride down to Weggis is great but make sure at the bottom near Lake Lucerne that you go to the correct boat dock which is to your right so you get the correct boat back to the city!!

At your own pace.

Did this with a group of 6. Everyone had a good time. The views are amazing. Was easy to find your way. Walking routes on Mt Rigi are well marked. You can take different ways down. Some of us wanted to walk more than others. The bath are worth checking out. A couple hours is lots of time in them.

Unique Swiss experiences at our own pace.

The incredible views of precipitous snow capped mountains, hills dotted with neat houses and the mirror-like lakes. These painted memories that will last as some of our favourite views that we have ever seen. It was so special that it was really hard to take in. We both kept saying that we had to pinch ourselves! This tour was remarkable because we set the place. No ear pieces and demands to keep up. Just the two of us drinking in unforgettable signs. The combination of cruising along the lake, slipping up steep slopes in the cog train then the adrenaline rush of the precipitous cable car back to the lake were all so different and each so worthwhile. All of this at our own pace and complemented by a delicious lunch in the sunshine on the shores of Lake Lucerne. Incredible!

Beautiful views

The experience was very easy as far as getting to where we needed to be. It was great to not have a schedule - we could do this at our own pace. The cable car experience from Kaltbad to Weggis was very very crowded - packed in like sardines so if you’re last to get on (like us) you have absolutely no view except your neighbor’s armpit. 🫤 That could have been done much better in my opinion. Otherwise the views were breathtaking from the top and lake is very beautiful from the boat.

Spectacular

This trip was amazing. Could have been done on your own but so nice not to have to plan all 5 small trips yourself while traveling. The views were spectacular. Worth every penny.

Atonishing views

We were in awe with the views, since we got the cruise from Luzern. From the peak we hiked back to the spa to chill and relax. The schedule is sufficient to enjoy all of it.

Lucerne Switzerland

This excursion was extremely well worth the price. The boat ride across Lake Lucerne, the cogwheel train ride up to Mt Rigi, the mineral spa at Rigi & the cable car ride down.....made for a very memorable ending to our vacation.

A relaxing day trip

It was a great way to end spend a day in Luzern. The instructions were clear and all the reviews helped as well. One Viator pass covered all the logistics, very simple and easy.

Worth the boat ride and views at the top

We did not go to the spa, but rigi kulm for views. The boat ride and cable car are timed so you can get off one and on the other. Wonderful views at the top if it's a clear day , if it's cloudy it may not be worth time/cost. This was included with swiss travel pass. Other reviews online stated rigi kulm had the best views although mount pilatus was more panoramic. There is restaurant at the top but expectedly pricey.

The Perfect Day!

An absolutely amazing experience! We began our day on a lovely boat trip to see the lake, the views were amazing. We got off the boat in Vitznau at the cogwheel train station. It was very busy and the train was full, but the views were breathtaking. It is shocking how steep the ride was. We got to the top of Rigi Kulm you are immediately in awe of the views. We had a little lunch and walked around admiring the views. We then started our descent to Rigi Kaltbad where the mineral spa was. The walk was steep but lovely, we loved walking through the little neighborhoods. I also Loved that on the path down, we ended up on the flower trail, which allowed us to find out the names of all the beautiful wild flowers along the route. . The Spa was amazing, perfect respite after our walk- we brought towels but towels could be rented. Swimming in the indoor/outdoor pool- just lovely. The jets were great on my knees! We then found the cable car which brought us down to the beautiful town of Weggis. There instead of jumping on a packed boat back to Lucerne we sat at a little cafe sipping procceco. This tour was great in that we did what we wanted on our own time, having everything packaged as one ticket was so easy. We took the 10:12am boat and we’re back at the hotel for 6:15 pm, it was a full day so be sure to plan for that.

Awesome Day Trip

This was an amazing day trip from Lucerne! we followed the guideline set out a by a previous reviewer : 1. take ferry from lucerne to votznau, 2. take train from vitznau to rigi kulm, 3. we hiked from rigi kulm to rigi kaltbad (about 1 hour + stopping for photos) 4. spa time 5. cable car down to weggis 6. ferry from weggis to lucerne. It started raining later in the day (after the spa) so it was a bit foggy when we were on the mountain, but the views were absolutely breathtaking anyways! Photos cannot do it justice. We also booked massages through the spa for 4pm which they discount because you already pay for entrance by buying this pass. The massages weren’t in their system when we got there but they had an opening at 5pm so we took that and the extra hour in the baths was worth it anyways!

A great day!

Our kids did this trip last year and recommended it to us. And now we can recommend it to others. It was a bit spendy but a fair value. Going on the cruise over to Vashua was a pleasant ride. The cog wheel to the top was a first for us and the views were stunning! And we got lucky to see some entertainment while there. We hiked down the the spa. That was a real treat!!! Really the spa is just something! Then down to Wegge on the cable car and home on the boat. I was with my husband and we both loved it! Day well spent.

Amazing day take train up the mountain and visiting the Baths

Instructions were very easy for the self guided adventure. We enjoyed the hike in the alps down to the bath and spa. Baths were very relaxing and beautiful

Makes the experience seamless

This is basically one ticket for all access. It wasn’t any cheaper than buying all the tickets separately but it was really nice that we didn’t have to worry about tickets at all. The mountain itself is gorgeous- we got lucky with a clear day. The mineral spa was a fantastic experience and should not be missed. The food options aren’t great on the mountain (overpriced).

Amazing Views!

Amazing trip along Lake Luzerne and to the top of Mt. Rigi. Thanks to the reviewer who posted all the details. It was easy to catch the boat from Dock 1 and then the train to the top of Mt. Rigi. Eat lunch at the cafe outside and enjoy being above the clouds. We hiked down to the Cable Car and had amazing views on the way down. Tip - the ticket allows you 2nd class seating on the boat which is the main level. We went upstairs and had to relocate when they checked tickets.

Weather dooms tour

I took the cruise and the Mount Rigi train, and they both were enjoyable experiences, especially the former. Didn't care much for the spa although it's a nice addition. However, on the day of the tour, it was cloudy and raining. So while I'm sure the views are thrilling, as everyone in the reviews keeps raving about, I couldn't see more than 2 feet in front of me on the mountain peak, leave alone the distant Alps. The weather isn't in the tour operator's control, obviously. But, in hindsight, this is worth it if the weather cooperates. As the weather is fickle, according to a local, there's a pretty strong chance you'll pay a steep price for several hours of frustration. I took the tour mid-May.

It would have been better on a clear day!

This is a fine tour on a clear day. Unfortunately for us it was very cloudy and we really did not have a view during our walk near the top of the mountain. I had a Swiss rail pass, so I really did not need to pay the money for this trip as you can use your pass to take the train o the top of Mt. Rigi. You would only need to pay for the boat to the train. Since it was a cloudy, cool day we skipped the mineral spa.

A must do In Lucerne!!

Fantastic package! Mt Rigi was clouded in but the boat ride there was fun & scenic. Very easy to convert to the train which was fun & scenic, Favorite part was the hot springs/ Spa That was amazing. Cable card ride down was beautiful & easy to find way to the boat back!! So glad we did it!!

Awesome

Package was perfect. Yes a little pricey BUT we’re not from anywhere near this beautiful little country. Having a package set up for us to use was perfect. NOTE to you females..spa is beautiful and everyone in your party will love it! BUT to my American surprise…the hot sauna (not steam sauna) is NUDE only and co-ed🤣. I was ill prepared to see all that Switzerland sausage ! Oh well….when In Roma?!?! Lol

Wonderful landscape view of Mt. Rigi

Round trip using ferry from Lucerne to Mt. Rigi. Wonderful sightseeing of clean Lake Lucerne and beautiful landscape view of mountains surrounding of the Lake. It was very beautiful and hope to visit again.

Most Awesome adventure ever!!

The old train ride up to the top of the mountain was incredible. The spa expertise was awesome. We can now say that we have swam when it has snowed on us. The check in and out process was very well explained.

Great Day Trip

Highly recommend visiting Mt Rigi from Lucerne! I’m not sure this bundle was necessary though, it’s all easy/obvious where to buy tickets. I will say everyone eventually accepted this all-in-one ticket, but they also all stared at it for a long time like they never saw it before and didn’t know what to do with it. That being said the Mineral Baths and the mountain on a clear day are not to be missed!!

Spectacular Views at Rigi!

We enjoyed our day at Rigi very much! As many of the other reviewers point out, this tour only provides you bundled tickets and NO additional information to guide you. So, you definitely need to prepare for your day which is a bit tricky as the Rigi website is fairly useless (we assume things are just lost in translation). Instead, read the other review as several reviewers really spelled out helpful details! But here is some info from our adventure -- We picked up the boat at Pier 1 which is the first dock directly across from the main train/bus station. And the views from the boat were spectacular so make sure you find seats up against the windows. The boat lands right at the train station so just follow the crowd and take the train right up to the top of the mountain (last stop). Once up there, you have beautiful 360-degree views. We chose to eat lunch at the top of the mountain and found three choices. Two were in the hotel including one cafeteria style and one area hidden in the corner that was a sit-down restaurant with just a few tables. We choose to eat there, and the food was decent and pretty expensive, but the view was lovely. We opted out of the 3rd option which is just slightly down the mountain from the train station b/c it is cash only and outdoor seating (too cold for us). But we heard from a local that their fondue is GREAT! After lunch, we chose to hike down to the midsection of the mountain to Rigi Kaltbad where we had tickets to the mineral bath. It was a pretty hike with amazing views of both sides of the mountain on the way down. For us it was snowy and wintery on one side and lush and green on the other which made for some great photos. Now let's talk about the bath....Being American, we were totally creeped out in the baths, but had some real belly laughs as bath suits were not allowed in the sauna and there was a LOT of PDA going on in the shared bath space. However, it was an experience that we will never forget and worth a stop just to people watch. If you go, I HIGHLY recommend you pack flip flops! From the baths, you can follow the signs to the cable car that takes you back down the mountain. Once exiting the cable car, you will have a 10 to 15-minute walk back to a different dock to pick up the boat. The path is pretty well-marked with signs and takes you past a few homes and hotels to get a feel for the area. We missed the old fashion wooden trains all together, but we didn't feel slighted. If that's important to you, you will need to read up on how to get onto one of those trains as it was not obvious on the mountain.

It was magnificent!

This tour is worth every penny! The boat trip from Lucerne was amazing. The views up Mt Rigi are magical! The Spa was the icing on top! The Spa is for couples! I would highly recommend the tour!

Wonderful experience

The whole experience was wonderful. From the boat ride, train ride, hike, spa. Spa was AMAZING! The only downfall was that there was no view due to the clouds that day.

Vague Instructions with little help from tour operators

Better directions. The instructions were very vague and hard to find as an international traveler trying to find our way. The number provided on the confirmation was a number to the train station and not the boat dock location. The boat dock is the first step on the tour. I had to keep emailing the tour operator and waiting for a response. Because of that, it took us over an hour to find the boat entrance dock. The hour delay, combined with driving time, caused us to not have enough time to get off the boat and do the rest of the tour. I had a 10 hour layover and it still wasn’t enough time. We found on the boat that the train ride up is 45 minutes. Once you add train ride (45 mins up and 45 minutes down), plus the boat ride (an hour each way). You are already at 4 hours, not including the miners spa, cable car, and sightseeing at the top. Do not try to do this excursion on a 10 hour layover. It is not a 5 hour tour, more like 7-9 hours. You need a complete empty day for this. It probably would have been a great excursion IF better details were provided. But as a foreign traveler, it was a lot to navigate with such vague details. All information should have been provided upfront and it would have saved me a lot of time & money.

Great way to spend the day and take in the amazing beauty of Switzerland.

This is a SELF GUIDED tour so do not expect to be meeting a tour guide who will be with you during your day. The boat leaves from the main Lucerne Pier and you are automatically in second class (you can upgrade on the boat if you want). Second class means you can only stay on the main level of the boat and cannot go to the top level or sit in the top level restaurant. Boat ride is scenic. You can bring a stroller if you need to. When you arrive at the town you take a tram up the mountain. We were here in August, which is high season and it was packed. Its a very vertical climb up, which is fun but if you're stuck standing you'll have to lean quite a bit to stay upright. Once at the top you can take different routes to walk down Mt Rigi. The views are spectacular! There is a paved route you can use if you have a stroller etc or you can take the off road routes, which are shorter. If you go off road, make sure you don't touch the electrified fences that are set up for the cows. My 3yr old and partner both got shocked and it HURT. I wish they would set up signs to let you know that the fences are electrified. The spa/baths is really nice way to break up the day. We had so much fun there. Then we took the cable car, which was also extremely crowded so even though there is an amazing view going down, it's hard to see if the cable car is full of people. Still worth it to do this tour though.

Unique and convenient tour for family trip

Flexible self guided tour. We have 3 young kids, all enjoying the transportation and especially the spa! Very convenient and unique experience.

Watch the time table for boat and train schedule or ask at the info booth. Enjoy every moment.

Wonderful Day Trip with Amazing Views!

This was one of our favorite day trips while in Switzerland, as we were constantly surrounded by beautiful scenery! We took the boat from Pier 1 to Vitznau (we opted for the 9:12am departure) We arrived in Vitznau and then got on the cog rail train (right next to pier) which we took to the top of Rigi (Rigi Kulm). We then hiked our way down to Rigi Kaltbad where the mineral bath/spa is (you can take the train back down, but we enjoyed a hike at our own pace, along with the views) In Rigi Kaltbad, we stopped for lunch, then went to the mineral bath, which we thoroughly enjoyed! After the mineral bath, we picked up the cable car to Weggis (cable car is right next to the bath/spa). Weggis is where you board the boat back to Lucerne (follow the signs to the pier). This was a wonderful way to spend the morning/afternoon: amazing views, a chance to hike, and an opportunity to relax at the mineral bath. Highly recommend!!

Loved it

Great experience! Mobile ticket is good for all transports: boat, cogwheel train and cable car , as well as spa entrance. You don't need separate vouchers. The time table for everything is set up perfectly, so you don't have to wait too long. You can rent a robe and a towel at the spa or bring your own. No shampoo nor soap is provided in the showers. The pool water has no chlorine and feels amazingly. We had the most relaxing and enjoyable day.

An All Around Fabulous Excursion!

This was a fabulous excursion worth every penny. The description doesn’t convey how unusual a trip it is . With a boat cruise , cog rail trip, hike and cable car ride you get every angle on some of the most stunning views of mountains and lakes you’d find anywhere . While hiking we followed Rick Steve’s suggestion for the hike down the Chanzelli detour from Staffel( it makes more sense once you are on the mountain) and were not disappointed. Every turn we took offered gorgeous views. We ended the hike with a swim in the mineral baths which are mid-way down (Rigi Kaltbad) the mountain and include a heated indoor/outdoor pool with perfect views the Alps. Another reviewer spelled out the directions for the trip which got us started. Once on the mountain it was clear. Enjoy!

Amazing

Love love love this activity. I was a little intimidated with the lack of details, but thankfully another reviewer filled in the details. We went and had such a lovely day. Here was we did- Luzern —> Vitzanue by boat Vitzanue —> Rigi (a few diferent stops depending on how much you want to hike/explore) —> then we hiked down to the middle of the mountain (1 hour hike or you can take the train back down), did the Spa (amazing!) had a late lunch then took the cable car —> Weggis. Finally boat back to Luzern. Highly recommend you do this if you are in the area!

BOOK THIS TRIP!

100% worth the price. The only con I can think of is the "directions" are very vague so I will lay it out for you. 1. You're going to take the cruise from Pier 1 and it's going to take you to Viztnau. It's a little under an hour to get from Lucerne to Vitznau. If you go up to the ticket booth they have time tables but we left very shortly after 1000. 2. When we arrived at the pier at Vitnau we took the rail to rigi Kulm (the peak) the rail station is RIGHT next to the pier just follow the crowd. 3. Once you're ready to go to the mineral baths take the rail back down from rigi kulm to rigi kaltbad. (Middle of the mountain). 4. Once you are done with the mineral baths at rigi kaltbad take the cable car down to weggis. IT IS A 15 MIN WALK FROM THE CABLE CAR TO THE PIER SO PLAN ACCORDINGLY! 5. Go to the pier there is signage everywhere to get you there. We went on a Saturday and the last boat out was 1809. All of the transportation is very punctual so do not arrive late. All of the ticket booth staff speak very good English so ask for time tables. This package was well worth the price. We did not have to struggle to buy tickets in lines. We were able to walk up to the peak of MT Rigi which had breath taking scenes. We had all acces to the mineral baths (except massages). Absolutely wonderful experience. Very convenient. If you want to make your trip worth while BOOK THIS TRIP.
