Winton Discovery Day Tour

Awesome day in Winton.

The day tour to Winton was amazing. We were picked up by bus from our lodgings by Outback Pioneers at 6:30 in the morning and we were off for a day of discover. Our first stop was the Age of Dinosaurs Centre. What a fantastic place to visit if you’re interested in palaeontology. Fossils of dinosaurs were discovered in the region about thirty years ago and from then on, this marvellous centre was built for those interested in dinosaur fossils. The tour guide explained the long and slow process of digging up and ensuring the preservation of these fossils and live sized bronze statues showed us what they would actually have looked like when alive. Then it was off to Winton Centre for lunch at the The North Gregory Hotel and we were entertained by Gregory North who recited poetry by Banjo Patterson who lived in Winton for a while. A wander in town after lunch then back on the bus for the return to Longreach at around 4:10 in the afternoon. A great day out.

Average Outback Experience

Our driver was very experienced and gave us the local knowledge but I found many of his comments boring, dated and sexist - considering most of travelers were women ! The lunch at Winton Northern Hotel was more of a kids sized meal of either fish n chips or bangers and mash - both pretty cheap meals to prepare.

I would recomend this tour to anyone interested in Prehistoric Fossils.

We booked this Tour, online, directly with the venue before we left home because we were unable to book a tour with the local Tour Company. We drove ourselves to Winton from Longreach, a trip of about 11/2 hours each way, not difficult.

Worth visiting

As my husband is unable to walk very far, the staff at the centre were very helpful and we were able to enjoy a shorter tour, involving a visit to the laboratory and the film and talk at the centre. Watching the people actually working on the finds from the diggings was very interesting, and our guide (Jacob) was very informative. Everything was very well done and well worth a visit.

Great day out

The day was about dinosaurs, waltzing Matilda and the past life at Winton. The waltzing Matilda museum is well worth a visit.

Wonderful

The whole trip was extremly well planned and kept to schedule (when everyone arrived back to the bus on time). The driver/guide was excellent with a great knowledge of the local area. Our trip to the Dinosaur museum was excellent and informative. We were supplied with tea/coffee and home made anzac biscuits for morning tea.

Great Day Out

The driver was such an entertainer everyone had a good laugh. Winton was very interesting. The tour included alot of great places. Highly recommend.

Our team building trip gets top marks.

So many great memories. The long drive from Longreach to Winton seemed to flash by as we listened to some wonderful real cattle farm stories. We were amazed with the Age of Dinosaurs exhibits found right in the local areas. What we learned from the experts was so informative we quickly passed the time on the trip back to Longreach. Tea and homemade anzac biscuits kepts up all happy till we reached Winton and had an amazing time at the Waltzing Matilda centre. A really special adventure for anyone of any age.

Awesome Tour by Outback Pioneers Longreach

Today we jumped on board the Outback Pioneers coach and drove to Winton to go and see the dinosaur museum The dinasour museum was Amazing . We visited Winton and the Waltzing Matilda Museum We explored the shops in the Main Street and bought souvenirs . We went to the North Gregory Hotel for lunch - the meals were beautiful . We walked out the back of the North Gregory Hotel to look at Arno ‘s Wall - what an eye opener . It was someone’s treasure ( once upon a time ) cemented to a concrete wall . Some of the things stuck in the wall were motorbikes type writers , lawn mower. Hubs , fans , sewing machine , oven doors .wheel trims , engine parts and the list goes on and on and on , so does the wall . I am so glad we caught the Outback Pioneers bus . They do such an amazing tour , well worth the money . We enjoyed our day out and I recommend it to all ages Also the North Gregory Hotel has a caravan Park out the back of the hotel.

Educational trip

We went in the Winton discovery tour today with Outback pioneers. Awesome day, very educational. Tour guides were awesome, really knew the information. Would highly recommend the trip. Have a look around Winton while there. We had lunch at the Gregory hotel town. Meals were awesome

Overall it was rather disappointing.

Commentary from our tour guide was good and the visit to the Waltzing Matilda Centre was good. The rest of the visit was below average. The tour was overpriced for what we experienced. The visit to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs was disappointing and was rather deflating.

A great tour

It was a great day including several fascinating and fun activities and all was very well organised and communicated

Prehistoric memories from an old grandma

Richard, our driver had us all in stitches the whole way with tales of his childhood. The miles slipped past. Our Dinosaur experience was amazing, our lunch at the Gregory unforgettable. We were entertained by none other than Banjo Patterson. Opal shopping exquisite, the Matilda. centre, amazing and our drive home a relaxing end to a wonderful day.

Ancient bones, ancient land

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide! Amazing finds well displayed. Only drawbacks were unloading a bus load of people with only 2 toilets and not enough time to properly do the dinosaur gorge and take it in. Well worth a visit!

A great trip out West to see this unique display and history.

Seeing the display in real life today and hear the local story and the area today. A trip worth the early morning start.

A very enjoyable day trip to Winton

I enjoyed seeing the dinosaur footprints and listening to the well informed guide and hearing the bush poet at the North Gregory hotel.

Good,but could have been great

Other than the trip up there,cd commentary,bush tales,hilarious. Dinasors was great.Our driver, guide,Graham was great. Enjoyed Graham North @ the pub. Unfortunately when you're paying $225 each,you expect more than sausage& mash,frozen f& chips. At least throw in a beer,wine with the meal,disappointing.

Winton experience.

The Winton experience lived up to expectation. The staff involved were great with a comfortable modern coach. The venues visited included the Dinosaur Park and North Gregory Hotel for an adequate lunch. An enjoyable day.

Worth it.

Ability to relax rather than do the drive. The Dino discovery centre. Would really have liked to go to the actual Dino stampede site but that want an option. Matilda Centre was a very pleasant surprise.

What a wow of a holiday!

What a heart warming and very special holiday we had in mid October with our remarkable hosts Richard Kinnon and his boys Jeremy and Lane. We experienced their full package tour which included the return train trip from Brisbane. We loved every single day spent with these true blue country people. Their hard working ethic and great humour made every day a memorable and unique experience with lots of laughs. The absolute highlight though for me was the bus day trip to Winton to the Dinosaur Museum. Richard was our driver and what a fantastic storyteller he is. He held us spellbound for the entire journey recalling stories of his childhood growing up in the bush. We laughed and nearly cried as we heard how tough life can be but how resilient these country people are. We all felt deeply moved. The Dinosaur Museum also astonishing! So very interesting every moment listening to dedicated palaeontologists sharing their knowledge. We highly recommend Outback Pioneers for a very memorable holiday. Fabulous top shelf bed at The Stables, recently built needs a special mention as well as the welcome air conditioned room when we returned from our full days! Thank you to the whole family for sharing your lives with us and giving us a powerful insight into country resilience and spirit.

Great commentary from Richard with very funny stories. Comfortable bus and well organized, everything ran smoothly. Great experience at all attractions.
