Energetic tour guides

Michael & Sarah were funny, energetic and informative. We walked to a variety of sites, which was fun, but be warned the terrain at times was steep or uneven.

Great tour great guide!

Our second visit to Edinburgh and second time booking with Mercat… absolutely loved it just as much the second time too! All the Mercat staff are always very friendly & professional, and we LOVED our tour guide Stephanie! She was very friendly and a great storyteller, she made the tour exceptionally enchanting! Loved her personal anecdotes on tour experiences, and her first-person telling of some of the stories… she really brought the creepy history to life! We will definitely book again with this company on our next visit to the UK! Thank you Stephanie and Mercat for a great time!

Fun time, great tour!

Our guide Jason gave a great tour. He was very theatrical and very knowledgable of the history of the area. It was a beautiful evening as well. The meeting spot was very easy to find. We enjoyed the underground part the most. In my one photo we can see a person, with people surrounding her. This was supposedly in the room with a female spirit. Spooky and a fun time for all!

Spooky fun

Excellent guide and tour!

Our guide, Linda was super warm, knowledgeable and wickedly funny! Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The only thing was, it was very windy so this affected the mic and our headsets a bit during the initial outside parts. Otherwise, a fantastic tour and wonderful guide!

Excellent spooky tour

Mark was an amazing tour guide. He really brought history to life and his interest and knowledge about the tour really made a difference. Great tour, loved the stories and with the headphones, none of us missed any of what he said. Highly recommend

Not the usual tour

The tour was highly enjoyable mainly because our guide, Linda, seemed to enjoy it with us. The historical events referred to were truculent, but at the same time funny, thanks to a lively and witty storytelling.

Interesting and engaging tour guide filled with gruesome facts!

I attended a Doom Dead and Buried Tour last week with Mark and it was amazing! He told me so much about Edinburgh's history and as a group we all seemed to hang on his every word! We visited the Blair Street Underground Vaults which were really eerie then we went down to a Graveyard and learnt about body snatching! Definitely recommend a tour with Mercat Tours!

Great tour

This was a very good and interesting tour. Wandering was our guide and he was very engaging and brought some humour into the tour. Highly recommend.

Dead Doomed & Buried - great for history! Not scary

The Mercat Tour Dead Doomed & Buried is very fun! Don't worry about the content warnings - this tour featured more history than fearful stories. A great way to learn more about the history of Edinburgh. Guide Ross was excellent, keeping the stories engaging and sprinkling in some fun humour/ acting. My one note would be that the tour did feel long, with lots of walking stretches as compared to the story telling.

Emma is great

We did the underground vaults tour with Emma - she is a fantastic guide. We were only four people and had a good time. The tour was a mixture in between history and ghost tour. The vaults are indeed creepy. Would absolutely recommend! Thanks Emma.

Ghostly story telling with Ross !!

Highly recommend this for a little something to do!! Especially if you are in to history and ghosts! Can't recommend Ross the tour guide Highly enough. He was so entertaining and enthusiastic, he really made the night!

It's a must!

What a brilliant night, we were lucky to get Ross as our tour guide - he was brilliant, funny and very knowledgeable with added dramatics that absolutely made the tour. I was with 5 friends and we had a great time. Ross let us use our Spirit Talkers etc and named our group #ghostbusters. I would definitely recommend the tour, we'll definitely be back to do more. Thanks again Ross, you made our night!

Awesome Ghost/History Tour

This tour was really fun and interesting! Ross was an excellent tour guide, he brought us into the vaults below Edinburgh and to the Canongate Kirkyard and shared a deep knowledge of the history and ghost stories associated with these places. I liked how there were headphones so you could hear everything the guide was saying, and I also really like the guide book you can buy as an add-on, it goes into even deeper detail of the history of Edinburgh, it's got some fascinating information in it.

Fun and entertaining but wrap up warm

Ross treated us to a very entertaining tour full of facts, some probably true but all designed to mildly scare. Half of the party were from Australia, as most tours are anywhere in the world now, and we were definitely feeling the cold! So wrap up warm. Lots of character pubs in the vicinity and you don’t walk far so suitable for most people.

Emily was phenomenal! What a talented storyteller. Perfect for the role! She actually had us scared sometimes, and laughing at others!

Such a good time!

Had an amazing time on this tour! Heard great stories and saw some places off the beaten path. Michael was a great guide! Hilarious and very helpful. Will definitely do another tour next time I’m in the city.

Amazing spooky (and funny) tour

We had a really great time during this tour ! It was not only spooky but also really interesting. Our guide, Ross, was beyond amazing. The way he told (and act) the stories kept us intrigued for the whole tour. And he does have a couple of Daddy’s jokes as the cherry on the top of this Tour !

Fay our guide was absolutely superb! So friendly, informative and a great story teller that kept us gripped the whole time! We would highly recommend anyone visiting Edinburgh to experience a ghost with Mercat Tours!

A Scary Good time

Michael was an amazing tour guide and storyteller. It was a rainy night, but he was so entertaining so we didn’t mind the wet. The vaults were great and fun.

Ghost and underground Tour Edinburgh

What an amazing tour the atmosphere, the area and of course our tour guide Linda. Linda was a wealth of information and her folklore and interpretation of the history of Edinburgh was brilliant , she made everyone feel included and left us with suspense in every room and we even captured orbs in the underground . Definitely worthwhile tour a must for all. The bonus would be having Linda as your guide.

Doomed, Dead, and Buried with Haunted Ross

Haunted Ross was the absolute best guide we could have asked for. Hilarious, theatrical, and charming with just the right amount of camp that makes a ghost tour everything it needs to be. We did the doomed, dead, and buried tour which visited the vaults and the canongate graveyard. The vaults were spooky and worth a visit on any Edinburgh holiday. From one ghost guide to another - Thank you Ross!

Awesome Tour

Really fun tour, lots of gruesome history to hear, and our tour guide Anastasia was very spooky! The best part was definitely the vaults, 2 of my friends even got touched by some of the ghosts down there. Would absolutely do this tour again!

A bit of an alternative history of Edinburgh

We booked this tour not really sure what to expect. From when we arrived until it finished out guide Michael was superb. He told us many stories and guided us through various aspects of the history of Edinburgh. He was both very knowledgeable and passionate. He also had a great depth of knowledge. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time. We would highly recommend booking a trip

Ghost tours

I loved the history and the spooky storytelling of Margaret Ann. She made the tour smooth and exciting, even my husband got involved and he is skeptic. I loved seeing the vaults and going to the graveyard. Even got the chills in the vaults and saw a figure. The tour guard was there for any questions and even gave some advice for places to see. Mercat tours even gave us a little gift to say congratulations for us just getting married as we came to Edinburgh for our honeymoon .

Amazing tour guide!

A nice way to get the “horror/scary” stuff about Edinburgh. Ross was our tour guide for the evening and he was above and beyond expectations! He was very engaging and fun. If we get him again as a tour guide again, I would 110% do the tour for the second time.

Underground ghost tour

We went on the ghost trip and Linda, our guide, was a really friendly and knowledgeable person who knows how to tell a good story. Although it was raining we had a really good time and would happily recommend this to anyone.

Never need a Break from Ross

This tour was my favorite activity during my trip to Edinburgh. I was very uneasy about going into the vaults, but as soon as the tour started (still above ground) I knew I was in the best hands. Ross, our guide, was FANTASTIC (and so was his "assistant" Caroline! Such a pleasure to have them both there!) I can't express enough how engaging and fun he was. He managed to teach and entertain at the same time, and his enthusiasm and passion for this place and these stories shone through, lighting everyone else on the tour up as well. I would do this again in a heartbeat, especially if he was our guide. Mercat truly is the best at what they do. Can't wait to return and walk the city with these guys some more. -Nicole

Great tour, good stories

Solid 4.5 stars. On my way, it could've gotten 5 stars would be if we saw ghosts. :D Mark was a great guide and had just the right sense of humor throughout the whole tour that he mixed in with the stories. You never have to worry about hearing your guide because they give you wireless devices that you plug headsets into so you can hear what the guide is saying. They provide headsets or you can bring your own. If you bring your own, make sure they have the 3.5mm tip.

Mark was great!

4.5 stars. Mark was a great guide — loved his jokes especially. Overall the tour was cool but was mostly just walking from location to location telling ghost stories. Also, for anyone considering which haunted/dark history tour to do, I did three different ones and found that they all covered largely the same stories and history, so just pick one! This one had the bonus of the vaults, which were kind of cool but not a “must see” in my opinion.

Ghost, vaults and laughs

The haunted underground ghost tour was spooky fun. Our guide, Ross, was a grand story teller and made the eerie tour a delight. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good ghost story and I hope you have Ross as your story teller!

Absolutely amazing.

This was the end of a very long day in Edinburgh for the first time and we couldn't have been happier with it. The locations were fantastic to look at and our tour guide, Jared, was the perfect mixture of informative and entertaining. It was great to be openly involved as a member of the audience, it felt like hanging out with a bunch of friends instead of a group of strangers.

Ross is tops.

The tour was so much fun. Ross, the guide, was the perfect amount of informative, entertaining, and camp. If you like horror movies and ghastly stories get this guy. He is dope.

Informative and historical tour of Edinburghs dark history

Very engaging tour guide was Black John. Full of interesting facts and storyteller. The tour took us to areas off the Royal Mile which was a bonus

Great fun

A very enjoyable tour of the underground vaults and some haunted locations. We learned some gruesome history with a dose of humor. Remember not to look up when walking in a Close/alley.

Fascinating glimpse of Edinburgh’s Underbelly

The tour I was on covered the underground vaults and Canongate Kirkyard, and it was a very enjoyable experience. No, I did not see any ghosts but our tour guide Emily still managed to give some chills to us while relating gruesome anecdotes from Aulde Reekie’s violent past. A guided tour is only as good as the guide, and Emily was excellent. Obviously a lady who enjoys her work, Emily delivered her tales with flair and enthusiasm. Very knowledgeable! And, the Mercat headphone and radio system let us hear every word she said, very clearly. Quite a few steps to climb or descend so sadly I don’t think anyone with major mobility issues or wheel chairs could do this tour. And, NOT suitable for young children because of the “ adult content”. Definitely a great experience. Kim, AUSTRALIA.
